Calle del Factor: Gorgeous views of the cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Casa del Campo (the old royal hunting grounds, now an enormous public park).
Calle de la Almudena: The admittedly not so impressive remains of an old church. But I love the statue of the Curios Neighbour, and also knowing that this was the former location of a mosque.
Calle de San Nicolás: Love this little hidden corner with Madrid's oldest standing church from the 12th century (and which potentially is the site of a former mosque
Plaza de la Villa: Once the most important square in the city!
Calle del Codo: Love this tiny little hidden street - also the location of the famous cookie nuns!
Plaza Puerta Cerrada: Right at the top of Calle Cava Baja (tapas heaven!), and where the famous motto of Madrid can be read on the walls - "Over water my walls of fire are built."
Plaza Mayor: The city's main historic square - site of inquisition trials, bull fights, fires and the Christmas market.

@@Xiroi87 habitable places for large cities (access to running water and similar things) were pretty much decided 1100 years ago. Most decent sized cities in Spain have at least 1100 years. Madrid in fact is a late boomer. It growth for political reasons (kings deciding it would be the capital). A lot of places in Spain were founded by Romans.
I'm from Astorga, a small city in NW Spain. In 1986 we celebrated the 200th anniversary of the city.

Madrid already existed before the Arab invasion of Spain, in fact its name comes from an ancient word, "Matrice" which means "spring", due to the abundance of water.
As for the choice of city, choose Madrid.
Within an hour of Madrid there are Toledo, Ávila, Segovia...Pure History concentrated.
By the way, in the center of Spain it can be VERY cold in winter, I mean there is ice, snow and everything you can expect from a winter, don't let a postcard of the Costa del Sol give you the wrong image of the country. No one here would think that Nebraska has the same weather as Florida.

Basic Historical Chronology.
It is normal for Arabs to translate words and places that already exist into their language, but it is not normal to attribute the origin to them when it is clearly not the case.
Being ignorant about something its not a bad thing per se. The bad thing is to want to remain ignorant.
A few remarks here from a guy from Madrid, James knows the city quite well but he mentioned some stuff that wasn't correct. First, the Spanish Inquisition, they did some trials in Plaza Mayor, but that was not as common as he presents it, in fact the number of people executed by the Spanish Inquisition in 3 centuries was way lower than other Inquisitions in Europe, and yes, the Inquisition was not a Spanish invention, it was created by the Pope in Rome and the protestants copied it and were far more brutal, like the Calvinists in Switzerland with Jean Calvin. Also, if you repent from your sins, they usually let you go, the Spanish Inquisition was mostly prosecuting Judaizantes, Jewish people who have converted to Catholicism but kept on practicing their religion at home, and not witches or stuff like that, it´s all very well documented.
About Cervantes, he was not a POW, he was kidnapped by Moorish pirates and kept as an slave for a few years in modern day Algeria. That was quite common back then as you can see by all the defensive towers in the Spanish Mediterranean coast:
Talking about the dead bodies, that´s what happens when lots of years have passed and also when history with wars, revolts and all that happens. Remember, Richard the III of England was found in a parking lot, just to name anotehr example.
And finally, as somebody mentioned, if you come to Spain, Madrid is one of the best places to go, you have fantastic historic cities like Toledo, Segovia, Avila, even Valladolid or Cuenca, very close and a great railway system that can take you there very quick, so great for a one day visit.

Inquisition was founded in France, and is not “Spanish”. We had Inquisition in every Catholic country. Although the Inquisition was certainly harsh in Spain, the reputation that our enemies attribute to it is completely exaggerated. While in Central Europe or England, once the Protestant Reformation was over, witch hunts were terrible, in Spain they were practically non-existent. But since our enemies continue to manipulate the story, the blame always lies with "evil" Spain.
The funny thing about the Royal Palace, is that IT IS NOT USED AS A GOVERNMENT BUILDING. Nowadays it's just a museum which gets 1.5 million visitors per year.
The kings live in a quite smaller palace 20 km away from the center, and the Congress of Deputies' premises and facilities are in other buildings.
We have a Constitutional Monarchy. The king is the Chief of State, but has barely no power. Take in mind that most countries aren't Presidential Republics like France or USA.
It's used for official events, though. It's only that the Royal Family doesn't live there.

@@Average_Middle_Aged_American In everyday life, the visitable part is a museum, but there are occasional official ceremonies, state dinners when a foreign ruler comes, presentation of ambassadorial accreditations, things like that.
The way he explains history is wrong in some cases. The history is complicated and there are some myths and simplifications that he is repeating. But he does have some videos that are very good.

The Plaza Mayor is usually (appart from terraces and tables from bars) empty.

XIX hubo que construir los primeros embalses y canales para traer agua desde el río Lozoya porque el acuífero estaba sobreexplotado... y entonces Madrid no tenía más de 300.000 habitantes, nada que ver con los tres millones de hoy sin contar el área metropolitana. Esas bolsas de agua subterráneas podrían servir como último recurso para emergencias de sequía extrema, pero de ninguna manera nos permitirían resistir como si nada décadas de lluvias con cuentagotas.

In Spain I've only visited Madrid, Toledo, Barcelona, and Sevilla. Madrid is surely worth a visit, if not only for the Prado Museum, but my favorite is Sevilla.
But also Granada and 😊Córdoba
The royal palace of Madrid, in baroque style, is a good example of this type of construction, and of the absolutist kings of the time. The royal palace is also built 'as' a fort. The body of the palace is built on top of a gigantic base with practically no windows compared to the rest of the structure. If you were to go back to the year 1750 you would see how powerful the building really is compared to the rest of what was around.
It is really a really large building/complex, to be able to accommodate hundreds of people, with all the luxury that constituted the royal court of the time (with terribly capricious people), and also be well defended since they also have barracks for the royal guard etc etc.
All European Monarchies (Spain, UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Monaco..) are so called "Constitutional Monarchies" which means that even if they have a King/Queen are just a symbolic figure with no executive or legislative power, aside of dissolving the parliament or some particular cases of veto. All these countries have been monarchies for centuries, back when they were Medieval Kingdoms, hence the monarchic tradition, but are now among the highest-ranking democracies in the world.
While "Spain revealed" is quite probably the very best foodie RUclipsr about Spain (so much so, that he knows more about Spanish food that I do, as a Spaniard), the video you´re reacting to is probably one of his worst, since it´s only showing but a tiny, tiny fraction of everything Madrid offers.
About visiting Spain, if you have 7 days, you have enough time to get a taste of the most representative cities in Spain, which are Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla, IMO. They all have different architectures, different sociocultural vibes, great food, and they can visited quickly, since we have high speed trains. Barcelona to Madrid is roughly 3 hours, and Madrid to Sevilla, not even that.

Yes, Madrid and any other spanish city with any degree of tourism has nearly all types of US fast food chains. Madrid is quite large with over 6 million population. Which includes many immigrants. Hard to pick most beautiful city/town because there are so many beauties. From medieval towns to white whitewashed villages and many architectural styles. There is a YT channel called 'come to Spain', short videos but does well at showing many places in Spain, check him out.
It's very funny your question about apartments with the Lujanes tower in the background. We had the king of France captured there after a battle in Italy in the XVI century!

Por otro lado El Palacio real de Madrid cuenta con mas de 6 pisos de altura cuenta con 3.418 habitaciones 870 ventanas ,240 balconies y 44 escaleras y mide alrededor de 135.000 metros cuadrados

The 12 Lucky Grapes we eat on New Year's Eve is a quite recent tradition. In 1909 we had an excellent harvest and vine growers spread this custom to encourage grape sales due to overproduction. Eating the Twelve Grapes leads to a year of good luck and prosperity. In some areas, this practice was also believed to ward off witches and evil in general.

We know it's uncommon for Americans to get a whole month of holidays. If you can only stay 1 week, I'd choose Madrid, because you may stay 4 days and visit a lot of museums and touristic spots and travel to 3 other historical cities in
Ideally, we are going to phase into retirement by slowing down with more time to travel. Of course, once we are retired, our time should be plentiful (unlike our bank account) 🙂

Tener una persona que sea al mismo tiempo Jefe de Estado, Jefe de Gobierno, Comandante en Jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas, Guardian de la Constitución y que al mismo tiempo, tenga las herramientas para cambiarla, nos parece peligroso.
El Rey no tiene poder, pero evita que un político lo tenga, o tenga más del que debería tener.

El rey no representa a nadie, porque no le hemos votado. Cuando haya un referéndum y lo gane la monarquía, podremos decir que es el representante, mientras tanto, lo único que hay es una constitución que sus propios ponentes dijeron que no quisieron poner dos opciones una opción con república y otra con monarquía parlamentaria, porque ganaba la república.

La Corona es la institución más valorada con más de un 70 por ciento de aceptación y apoyada por los partidos mayoritarios de manera abrumadora, como se ha podido ver en la crisis diplomática con México.
Si quieres cambiarlo, consigue dos tercios del parlamento, luego disuelve las cortes, convoca elecciones y gana otra vez con dos tercios.

For me as a Spaniard, it is a very difficult choice. However, if you want to see something out of the ordinary in Europe, I would visit the region of Andalusia, and within it the city of Seville. It is so diverse that films as diverse as Star Wars and Game of Thrones have been filmed there because of its spectacular locations.
My suggestion is Madrid as you can easily go on one day excursions to places that are one hour away and totally a must like Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial and with high speed train you can reach Valladolid in one hour, also Salamanca and Burgos. Seville and Córdoba are a must as well, 2 hours away by high speed train from Madrid.
Qué difícil es decirte una sola ciudad de España, vente a Madrid y desde aquí te puedes ir a Toledo, Segovia, Guadalajara, Ávila...en una semana puedes visitar alguna de ellas además de Madrid..saludos!!

The frenchies did a great job plugging Versailles mostly to non European travellers, hence the myth, on the contrary Madrid royal palace is astonishing. I should know l am half French half Spaniard and spend my life between the 2 countries.
Here a Spaniard. I live in a region in the northwest of the country called Galicia. There are different places that are very worth visiting throughout Spain, but if you have to choose just one city, I would recommend Madrid. And if you are going to stay a week, you can visit the nearby cities of Toledo or Segovia.
It is very difficult to avoid graffiti in any city. Graffiti artists are fast, work as a team most of the time, and of course they know when to act (we cannot have a policeman on every corner just to prevent someone from painting on the walls). In some cities in Spain, professional graffiti artists are invited to paint their works on walls and also on the doors of businesses: mediocre graffiti artists usually avoid painting over something that a good graffiti artist has painted before them. Usually the town halls take care of the cleaning, sometimes simply painting over it with the same colour as the façade. The bad thing is when they paint on stone buildings and monuments. The treatment is much more delicate and expensive. There are companies specialised in this.
I see both sides of the discussion, harsher punishments would prevent a lot but it is not the end of the world.

Madrid gets 90 days of rain per year, and a couple of days of snow in some winters (not all of them). But other hotter cities like Seville, which has 50 days of rain per year, gets more rainfall.

Yeah, i like this kind of videos more than the "10 best X in Y" videos.
And as for Germany, i couldnt recommend the "one city" to go. There are just too many amazing places to visit.
The only city i wouldnt recommend is Barcelona. Not because its a bad city. It isnt at all.
But its a over hyped tourist trap. A bit like Paris or London.
Madrid is a very young city compared to other cities in Spain and Europe in general.

I am from Madrid, we get so little rain during the year and days like this are not very common. Maybe in autumn and winter. About your question of which city will I suggest if you only could visit one in Spain it has to be Seville.

Graffiti is not seen as a problem in Spain, unless it gets completely out of hand. A lot of it is rather attractive. Sometimes graffiti artists are employed by local councils to decorate what would be bare or boring walls. As for crime, you are extremely unlikely get shot in Madrid........

Magerit was a small islamic outpost 1100 years ago, with a muslim fortress located in a high position to control the valleys below... but that's no longer the case.
The oldest building in the city is from ~1450 though, because any older houses have already been replaced. It's a small tower located next to the old Town Hall, exactly where you stopped the video at Plaza de La Villa (minute 17:52 of your video, 8:24 of the original one). Those are not residential places any longer, they allocate municipal institutions. However, there are neighboring buildings in the immediate vicinity, just some metres away.
Hi again, about that difficult question that has no real answer but everyone agrees to say madrid is the best place, well okay, it's actually the capital mainly because of its central location of the peninsula so it was an obvious capital when castile became spain and other countries had their old capitals as london or paris dating back roman and preroman times, but they choose madrid by the time the empire was being built.
So there has been another capitals for the different christian states and also muslim states from the period since roman empire fell (V-VI century) to the selection of madrid as capital around XV century and for some centuries before that castile monarchs (those who controlled madrid then) were moving their capital as they travel with their court.
This is not a particular thing for spain, all over europe there has been states since at least 3000 years ago, so each bit of our land has the fingerprint of our predecesors and so their look and soul is different depending on where you go.
And this is why i do not think i can properly answer your question, though i'll make a little list of those capitals and when they flourished, yet have still evolved more since:
-Mérida or Emerita Augusta / cap of Lusitania province of the roman empire
-Clunia Sulpicia /cap of a region of Tarraconensis province
-Zaragoza or Caesar Augusta / cap of Taraconensis province of the roman empire and of the taifa of Saraqusta (muslim) and Kingdom on Aragon on reconquista.
-León or Legio / cap of the Kingdom of León since 900 to 1210 when it merged with castile // also from roman times.
-Astorga or Asturica Augusta / cap of Asturicensis region of roman hispania
-Valladolid / cap of Spain in a brief period on 1700
-Oviedo / Cap of Asturias Kingdom , before it became Kd of León in 900
-Santiago de compostela / religious capital of Galicia an kinda of spain as the pilgrimage yada yada.
-A Coruña / civil-militar cap of Galicia
-Toledo /cap of the visigothic kingdom of Hispania when people from the eastern steppes invaded roman empire on V cent.
-Córdoba / also from ancient times, it became the cap of the caliphate of cordoba, a brand new caliphate around X cent, the peak of power, art and culture of that period
-Several capitals of the taifa kingdoms of moorish spain when the caliphate fell the century after and they turned to each other: Sevilla, Cádiz, Huelva, Jaén, Murcia, Alicante...
-Granada / also a moor cap, the last one and so where the art developed for more time, some say it's the most beautiful sunset in the world from the Alhambra palace.
-Barcelona or Barcino / founded by romans, became cap of the county of Barcelona that merged with kd of Aragon during reconq
-Tarragona or Tarraco / Capital of the Tarraconensis province
-Mallorca / capital of the kingdom of Mallorca (while inside the crown of Aragon) and also a taifa before that
-Valencia / Taifa of Valencia, principate of val. (conquered by legendary hero El Cid) and the kingdom of val. (inside Aragon)
-Cartagena or Carthago Nova / founded by carthagineans after their defeat by romans on III BC later conquered by those and made capital of the region.
I may stop here and fear to put more details, the idea is that each city is different in nature and so it is experience.
PD: as for Habsburg Madrid streets, you noticed there is not much business around just quiteness, well thats a particular part of the city that doest not resemble the rest of the modern city, it is just something left there so it is not erased entirely, but it is similar as rural spain you can see elsewhere in a more natural presentation, stone square buldings, little windows and thick walls, traditional building style with the best materials for the capital. But the guy did the effort to show you the city like this, don't be afraid , mcdonnalds is just behind the corner.
Also for the weather , it is sunny mosty but speaking of madrid in particular as any place is different, galicia is like scotia, canary island is the caribean, the capital is hot, dry and unpleasant in summer, the fact that you appreciated not much light in that shot is mainly because as a really large city madrid is grey most of the day due to the narrow streets and buildings, though there are a lot parks , some of them huge as the Retiro park and the Sabatini park (the guy mentioned it as it is besides the palace) or besides the prado museum the botanic garden.
I must add a detail, even if we might agree on that, the rest of spaniards know madrid is overrated and the reason of the oblivion of the rest of those capitals and more cities and places that do not get so much attention as...the capital

About the graffiti, it is frown upon if its on old important buidings, but not so much on new ones. Also, many of the ones you see, are on stores curtains. Those many times are done with the owner of the shop asking for it, because, usually, they don't make new graffiti over old ones, so the owner prefers to ask for a design he likes to an artist. And yes, if graffiti painters are caught by police, they are fined.

@@Average_Middle_Aged_American also, european graffiti writer usually know where to write. They don’t do that on stone, but usually on plaster or concrete. And most of the great artists of our time come from graffiti.
Also, if you’ll ever visit places like Pompeii or the catacombs in Rome, you’ll see our cities were covered in graffiti at that time too (the romans LOVED drawing dicks).

I have read many comments about which city to visit and most choose Madrid or Barcelona. If I had to recommend a Spanish city to start with it would be Granada. It has history, heritage, neighbourhoods that you will never see in your lifetime. It is a city that can be visited in one day. Cordoba is the only city with 4 World Heritage Sites that, like Granada, can be visited in one day. Afterwards, it is up to you. But being in Spain and not seeing the Alhambra is something that will weigh on you for the rest of your life. I don't know what your tastes are, whether they are cultural, gastronomical or natural. We are a relatively small country compared to others, but the north and the south are completely different, but with a high-speed train network that connects most of the provinces in a short time.
Don’t visit just one city
Madrid, San Sebastián, Bilbao, León, Córdoba, Barcelona, Granada and Sevilla that’s the minimum in my opinion.
But, the islands and the countrysides of Asturias, La Rioja and Galicia are also groundbreaking.
We will visit more than one city for sure. I just like knowing which city people think is the best. Thanks for your list!

If you don’t like graffiti, you won’t have a good time in Spain. I suppose that it varies from one place to another but, generally speaking, it is not heavily punished. So, graffiti “artists” usually will respect monuments, but any concrete random wall (and we have a lot) is fair game. Sometimes, and since these street “artists” won’t normally paint over the work of others, the owner of the wall will commission a painting of his liking to avoid having random graffiti signs (some of them only sign with their “logo” once and again, which I find disturbing).

One week for a country? Imposible . I pass one week in NYC, or Chicago but for India for example you need 5 months to see something, for Spain ? Impossible a lot of different cultures , too differents with 4 oficial languages , in Spain 87% are natives , but differents cultures , I’m Celt in the NW, (more similar by Roth’s to Ireland, Scotland, Wales). Around the world more than 500 millions of persons speak Spanish , 300 speak Spanish like own language.
There is a very good channel, dedicated exclusively to tourists coming to Spain and Portugal, called ROAD TRIP Spain and Portugal, which describes hotels, itineraries, travel from airports, buying tickets, prices, etc. and also reading the comments of interested people, many doubts are resolved, even with links to other videos of the channel in which the subject of consultation is described. I do understand what you are saying but I am way too pro US Constitution to be overly critical of my country as a whole. That is why we have states. Every state has different laws, economics, landscape, climate, etc.

El video no esta mal pero en mi opinion faltó muchisimo por enseñar, enseño lugares muy concretos y olvido enseñar los sitios mas impresionantes de la ciudad, en cuanto a una ciudad para visitar creo que no te equivocaras si eliges Madrid, Barcelona o Sevilla, quizas sevilla si buscas una ciudad con mucha esencia española es lo mejor que puedes visitar, si buscas una ciudad grande elegante, majestuosa, y señorial, ademas pudiendo visitar Toledo,Segovia, Avila ya que estan cerca y el monasterio del Escorial, Madrid es el camino, si quieres una ciudad un poco menos grande mas cosmopolita con un arte mas bohemio y playa, Barcelona es tu lugar con increible arquitectura, eso si ten cuidado con los carteristas, ten vigiladas tus pertenencias en lugares con mucha gente, en general es muy dificil recomendar una sola ciudad porque cada una es muy diferente y no se cual encajaria mas con tus gustos
