Had a mate who went fishing by himself in open ocean, hooked up a fish while trawling. It pulled the fishing rod from the holder so without thinking he jumped in after it, he then realised his boat was driving away from him and he was in the middle of nowhere at least a couple kilometres off shore. He survived because he realised the boat was moving in a large circle and managed to intercept the boat on its course, he said he was lucky because if he missed it he didn’t think he’d be able to keep swimming to intercept it again... he lost the fishing rod as well. So she was telling him she has a phobia of water.. and his idea is to pick her up and jump in the water with her??? That's like.. the worst decision he could have made lol
I’ve been in a similar situation. I learned quickly after buying my first sailboat and falling into the water to have some way to pull that ladder down. Luckily for me, someone was onboard to lower the ladder.
hydrophobic? I looked up Hydrophobic/Hydrophobia it says “Hydrophobicity is a term derived from the Greek “hydro”, meaning water, and “phobos”, meaning fear. Hydrophobic substances are composed of non-polar molecules that repel bodies of water and attract other neutral molecules and non-polar solvents. Examples of these molecules are alkanes, oils and fats in general.” But I think you mean Thalassophobia, which is the fear of the ocean or any deep sorts of the water.
While cruising in Fiji back in 1979, a story went around the Royal Suva Yacht Club that a boat was found north of New Zealand with no one aboard. Reading the ship's log, the last entry was: "Becalmed and hot. Everyone else is swimming. Me too". The last person aboard jumped in without lowering the ladder. All perished. I don't know if that story was true or not, but it certainly made all of us cruising sailors make sure our ladders were down BEFORE we jumped in the water.
I could be totally wrong, but, the couple times I've seen this movie, I interpreted the ending completely differently. I thought that the fact that the fishing boat didn't find anyone on board, but then you see them standing right there on the deck, was meant to insinuate that they didn't actually survive
That's what I thought too. Them just appearing on deck after the fisherman left and the baby crying made me believe they both drowned. That poor baby is left there alone.
@@babygirlwade Yea exactly.. it makes no sense for the fishing boat to have not seen them if they were actually just standing right there on the deck in plain sight, so I thought that it was maybe meant to be like her spirit standing there or something
The most implausible aspect of the movie is that they didn't do this first. I almost laughed out loud when the guy trying to do this got stabbed, conveniently providing a reason for the movie to go on another 45 minutes...😂
After the guy couldn't climb on the inflatable toy, they all could have grabbed onto each other in a ring around the floater. Then they'd be a fairly stable way for the lightest girl to climb up the anchor. Plus, all could hold their breath at the same time before she starts climbing. It'd make the human floatee even more buoyant, and let them stay together if they're pushed underwater. I jus hope if I'm in a crazy situation I'd have a good idea to fix it. But they say it's real hard when you're in the sh*t.
These movies are literally just detailed in depth don't do this but if you do heres basically a guide to what to do and not to do after doing it guides.
Exactly. Staying perfectly calm would have changed everything. Marines do training for this sort of thing but just person panicking could ruin everything
I was a competitive swimmer and would like to think I'm a better swimmer than most, it's extremely hard to do that while treading water especially in the open sea. I do think they could've done it but it's not as easy as you'd think especially because there's nothing to really hold onto on the hull of the boat
It actually could’ve worked because there was those notches on one of the ends of the boat that they held onto and could’ve used that as a holding so someone else could climb up
@@znom3455 that's a great point especially since it is ocean water which moves quick. But they didn't even try to boost one of the girls up to the ladder? One of the guys could have tried using the life vest wrapped around the toy dolphin for support so he's not pushed under

It happens sometimes. One actress that was on the TV show Glee died like that in a lake after she could at least save her toddler by lifting him up the boat. Happened in 2020 or 2021. But she had no life jacket on. Thankfully the boy was found safe on the boat hours later.
@@Romy--- she got tangled in the plants in the lake. It wasn't because she had no ladder. There are plants that can grow in a lake that are surprisingly deadly. And people drown in them silently.

We went tubing down a river once late in the evening. It became pitch black very quickly as the trees formed a sort of tunnel and the sun had gone down. Tubing down a river in pitch black darkness and you don’t know the river but you know it’s full of rapids, big rocks, dead heads, and water falls was terrifying. We managed to grab hold of a dead tree and pulled ourselves to the shore. There were 4 of us. We were soaked and wearing only shorts. We stumbled and walked through the black woods until finally reaching a rural country highway where we were able to hitchhike to a service station and called one of the girls to come get us, please, with blankets and sweats. Scary night. It was bear country too. We were young and dumb. Never again.
@@YourGraceMyLady it SUCKED. Definitely never did anything like that ever again and I wouldn’t ever tell my kids about it, wouldn’t want any of them to try and repeat that adventure. People die every year in that river, and that’s in broad daylight, good conditions. We were so lucky we made it out that night, and also super lucky to be able to hitch a ride from a guy in a pickup truck, he let us ride in the truck bed. I can’t imagine anyone would allow four, nearly naked, soaking wet, and dirty from the woods to sit inside the car and ruin their upholstery.

As the introvert who'd have rather stayed onboard playing games on my laptop or just read books, I'd have totally saved everyone in such a situation. 👀 Edit: to the people saying introverts wouldnt have been invited to these sorts of social events... well... idk what bullshit your society is feeding you (says a lot about where you live i guess), but introverts do get invited. Whether it's a simple night out drinking or getting some food, or even more expensive and longer events like trips or vacays, we get invited too. I can at least vouch for southeast asia on this. Whoever you are tho, considering your comments, please accept my condolences.
In the movie the husband threw his water fearing wife into the ocean without her consent and knowledge. So some jerk on board probably would've picked you up and threw you into the water also.
I wonder if she even survived. Why did the sailor man not see people on the people. Why did he not get on the boat to make sure everything was OK? Why she didn't heat the sailormans call? Could it be that they didn't survive amd they were in some type of purgatory?
Didn't see the film but with that many people it seems easily escapable by stacking on top of each other in a totem pole and pushing one guy up enough to grab the railing.
Yeah like, if the 3 men locked shoulders closed together with one wearing the life vest, then one woman could of stood on the shoulders of the man with the vest and could of reached for the bottom of the hand rail, 3 men peddling with one wearing a vest could of easily held up the girl, even if they were pushed under water by taking deep breaths the air in their lungs would prevent them from fully sinking.. Also when they did the clothes line, it's beyond me that the 200+ man was the one to go when those women easily weigh less than 150 lbs, one man could of worn the life best and boosted the woman going up so her whole weight wasn't on the clothes line.

It happened to me and my family once in Spain, we jumped off the boat and forgot the ladder and we shouted like crazy for my 7 years old brother who had stayed on board ,to put the ladder 😅
This movie has convinced me that boats should have an emergency ladder that is built into the boat. Like little grooves in the side of the boat that people can use if they're in this situation.
Here's what I want to know - how do you signal to somebody on a boat speeding past that you need help instead of just waving? Because if you just wave, they will just wave back.
Distress signal is extending and retracting all your fingers except your thumb, such that when extended they are all together and the thumb is tucked into your palm. Repeatedly go from a fist into this position and back.
I've seen this movie , what a gem and I'm already a cautious person and I always think about the worst possible outcomes before I do anything ... so it stressed me out that nobody thought of bringing out the ladder
FYI, you can't have hydrophobia if you don't have rabies. To be afraid of swimming is called Aquaphobia. I personally have it, too, and have never swam in a pool after I turned 12 (especially since my reluctance caused me to be a bit aggressive towards any swim instructor. I even had my parents make my PE teacher exempt me from swimming in high school).
I was hoping to read someone message that has great knowledge of this boat or ships in general. Thinking how easily this could happen to group of people..if your a nice boss with a yacht don’t let your errands boy barrow the boat for some clap time..
im no expert, but slightly familar. I am pretty sure its pretty hard to adrift like this. I don't believe there are actual boats like this, there should have been laders in the back. I say this for several reasons. 1. I think they avoided showing the rear, because the boat probably has one in the back. 2. The size of boat matters on if there is a ladder, this boat doesn't seem large enough, even though they try to make shots to make it look much bigger. 3. If the boat was really large enough to not have a ladder or an automated one that would mean there would be on board staff, so some one would always be on board/deck. Edit: Forgot to mention. Also I believe there are regulations and requirements for boats, depending on size, in what type of safety and survival features. Even if we go around that and say this boat didn't have side ldders. The boss wouldn't have lent out his sailing boat to someone with zero experience. The guy would have had to have some sailing experience, or boating license. He would have known of what ever emergency options they had. If not, I believe the boss could get in to trouble for lending out his boat to inexperienced sailors.

Why would she stay there for hours giving the others chances to get back on board when she could just leave them there? It’d be pretty easy to see she was just the lucky survivor imo.

This is actually very terrifying if you imagine being pushed into the ocean only to find there is no ladder especially if you're hydrophobic.
Thalassophobia** not hydrophobia
homie drinks no water
The fact that there's a baby on board alone makes it even worse.
hydrophobic? I looked up Hydrophobic/Hydrophobia it says “Hydrophobicity is a term derived from the Greek “hydro”, meaning water, and “phobos”, meaning fear. Hydrophobic substances are composed of non-polar molecules that repel bodies of water and attract other neutral molecules and non-polar solvents. Examples of these molecules are alkanes, oils and fats in general.”
But I think you mean Thalassophobia, which is the fear of the ocean or any deep sorts of the water.
Especially in the ocean
Lol I actually thought that someone passed by them and helped them. It was probably a different movie
That's what I thought too. Them just appearing on deck after the fisherman left and the baby crying made me believe they both drowned. That poor baby is left there alone.

It is not that hard. They have plenty of time to think.

Two of the men couldn't give amy a boost out of the water? All they had to do was grab her feet and push her up the side of the boat.
I was a competitive swimmer and would like to think I'm a better swimmer than most, it's extremely hard to do that while treading water especially in the open sea. I do think they could've done it but it's not as easy as you'd think especially because there's nothing to really hold onto on the hull of the boat
They would need to hold onto or stand on something solid in order to do that.
Ocean water is pure kinetics
It actually could’ve worked because there was those notches on one of the ends of the boat that they held onto and could’ve used that as a holding so someone else could climb up

The movie is "Open Water 2: Adrift"
I've seen the movie. Very suspenseful. I kept wondering why anyone with a brain would swim in the middle of the ocean with sharks in the first place.

Here's what I want to know - how do you signal to somebody on a boat speeding past that you need help instead of just waving? Because if you just wave, they will just wave back.
The people on the passing boat, we're probably just as drunk. Well...not probably drunk enough to remember the ladder. Bet they all survived!

@@yummychips_ You're not an expert at all. All these things are mentioned in comments where people had similar experiences. Such as where they hadn't noticed the ladder had been uninstalled because they were drunk or it had a foldable ladder that wasn't put down. and most of your points are about safety regulations and law which the majority of regular people don't actually give a shit about
This movie is the worst film I’ve ever seen. there where several moments when you can literally see bits of the boat they could reach and grab hold of in the swell. It was infuriating to watch and made zero sense.
Exactly! 1.Lowly errands boys can't be so chummy with their bosses. 2. Mostly people who have such lowly jobs are quite jealous of people better off than them and would want to use their expensive stuff roughly and spoil it!
One of the first lessons in boating is if people are going to be leisure swimming off of the deck, then the captain of the vessel stays aboard.
The baby WAS the captain you dope.
and if he gets a heart attack...then again...same situation
better design the boat with a fool proof mechanism like solid handles to climb up or push-buttons around the hull in case of a luxury yachts which can lower the ladders...again this will lead to probability of electronics failure...so a simple permanent ladder made of handles is way better
Ignore the negative comments.
This is one of my favourite movies.
Great tension with a very simple plot.
Moral of the story: make sure that installing handles to the side of the boat is available just in case this happens
Moral of the story: don't go on a boat.
