The last P.O.W. to return home from Russia was most likely András Toma, a Hungarian soldier who was left forgotten in an insane asylum until in year 2000, by accident, a visiting Slovakian physician noticed he is not crazy, muttering gibberish, but Hungarian words. Turns out András Toma never learned Russian, so he didn't have a proper conversation for 55 years. Anyway the doctor alerted the Hungarian authorities who sent out a team of soldiers and professionals. They identified him, brough him home, promoted him to the rank of colonel and payed him for sixty years of military service. What's more, they used DNA technology to find his closest living relatives, only to discover his half-sister was still alive. He went on to live with her and her family and died four years later in 2004.

It's amazing how movies can personalize and make us empathize with anyone whether it be the "enemy" Nazi soldier, murderer, adulterer, thief, etc. What I've learned throughout the years is that everyone has a story.
Except those aren't Nazis. They're Wehrmacht, regular German soldiers with no political affiliations. Whether the government was run by the Nazis, the Weimar Republic, the German Empire, or whoever, they would still be soldiers of Germany.

I am 72 years old. I served in the British army (1969 /1993). 20 million Russian dead , at the wars end. Did the German soldiers deserve that harsh treatment. I don’t think so. Only a very few German soldiers were returned home. But then Stalin sent millions of his own people into the gulags. Russians have always had it bad. I served in West Berlin so was able so see the Soviets up close !. Today the Russians are fighting in the Ukraine. Talk of nuclear weapons. Nothing changes or so you would think. He went through a lot. That's undeniable, of course. The Russians were brutal. 'Equally undeniable. This story would be more complete if scenes were added detailing any crimes, misdemeanors, or actions the German soldier himself would have committed against Russian soldiers and citizens prior to his capture and subsequent imprisonment.
Does his death justify brutality in return? If you think so, then you’re as bad as the people who murdered your father. Hitler and his Nazis were evil, but Stalin killed more people than Hitler did.
And all of this happened because the armies obey the words of a few leaders. What kind of Wars would we have if they just said no we're not going to fight?
