A trope I hate is when any female character who doesn’t immediately likes the female lead is evil, like every time I read a comment section they drag every female side character
I especially love the bit where any time an Edith dies and the story ends and resets, a new person gets reincarnated into her and there have been So. Many. Ediths. And none of them managed to change things enough to not get killed. It’s a fairly small detail but it does so much to make the author so much scarier.
I read the webnovel and it was alluded that author self inserted because they committed self exit, so my brain filled the blank and thought that the previous Ediths passed in real life in similar manner and that's why they gave up so easily after realizing the Rigelhof's ab*se and document smuggling accusation.
Oh in the novel, a few of them got close , but they were killed off with ' plot ' , a number of them worked around the SML but didn't quite catch onto the real culprit. The novel is better and more sinister. I loved reading that .🤔

It was Suna who was more prone to giving up because she often gave up on her life , her love and her health in real life too ....the author ended up making ' give up on your life ' the key to break free for the worst possible candidate; a person who was previously terminally ill and is experienced in giving up .
Actually, I'd say that (as a german) Rigelhof is rlly easy to remember, it's just an European surname. Not everything has to sound American or Asian, I think it's cool our names get some rep too.

That’s a nice breath of fresh air and It kinda made me feel weird when she said it was a “weird” name that was “hard to remember” but I guess them having an easy Asian name would have somehow been supposedly easier…not a fan of that… Granted you aren’t fully out of the woods either because, genuine question…what the hell is an “American” name? Lol, I know you definitely don’t mean indigenous American names…bc heaven knows you’d rarely find any in media if at all…but you do realize most “American” names that you are mostly thinking of are usually just…of English origin, yeah? There’s changes (some good some HORRIFIC) to the spelling of names sure, but the origin? Usually of English, French, Spanish, Italian and other origin. Not as weird as what Matty did in video, just a wild thing to say 😂

Yes most are of English origins but not all of them, and they became popular in Europe from the US, not the UK, hence the calling "american" names. jayden smith would sound more familiar than rufus baker would.
I think what she's getting at is more of that 'Ebony Darkness Dementia Raven Way' kind of naming convention, where it feels like the author is being extra by trying to invent a fantasy sounding name.

I feel this, I'm really liking this story and "top Dungeon farmer". Both are a breath of fresh air in their genres. Seriously check out "top Dungeon farmer" super cute animal/monster designs. Plus the "main character" is actually likeable. He has a cat monster as his business partner. But besides these two titles, I'm having a hard time finding good stories to read.

The ML reminds me of Mr. Darcy: coming into a relationship with preconceived notions and biases based on his partner’s family, but overcoming those by self improvement and introspection without pressuring their love interest with their betterment? Hell yeah. Main difference being that Killian becoming lovey dovey with Edith just made her confused, which is also very funny.
There's also another reason why Killian couldn't leave his biases even when he could technically see that what he's doing is wrong which is...spoiler alert! Cuz the author was controlling his mind since he's one of the main characters of the OG novel.
Oh yes . Killian is definitely Mr Darcy coded . Remember when Darcy proposed to Elizabeth and thought that he is doing her a favour by proposing to her despite her family being terrible and Lizzy not being ' good enough '??? Killian pulled the same schtick a few times before and got kinda rebuked by Edith and he got his act together. He was very prejudiced but open to learning more and developing.🤔
NGL,I generally stay far way from webtoons with cold, rude, arrogant Mls but this one is better since he had a genuine reason for his behaviour and he had a good redemption arc. I just hate how much she had to suffer because in the novel it was brutal. Also since you talked about Mr. Darcy, I would recommend the manhwa, Glass Wall. The main characters are really Jane Austen coded and the Ml is like Mr Darcy too 😭😭. Although here too the fl had quite a suffering but the Ml suffered too and had a good redemption arc.
Something cool I wanna point out about the antagonis (this is kinda spoilery) is that later on its revealed they tried writing other stories after the one about Rhyse was a success. But they had no luck as they kept trying to reuse the same archetype over in the form of Rhyse and Cliff. And if that isn't commentary on RoFan stories regurgitating the same kind of "perfect" MCs and Male Leads over and over again in hopes of striking gold then I don't know what is. I also REALLY like Cliff because the dude is basically the typical Male Lead who's terrible to everyone but the MC who they love, and it really shows how unlikable and slimy a person like that would be to be around for anyone not their love interest. My only real complaint here is that the twist on who the author is possessing is kinda boring and obvious, if not outright revealed from the start. There were really only two suspects but the one they chose as the culprit is just really obvious from the onset especially if you're familiar with Villainess Isekai and functionally makes them less interedting as a character. It's a shame two because the other suspect wouldve been far more interesting to see how Rhyse and her family would've handled. And I do think it was SUPPOSED to be a twist because the story tries several times to misdirect you (certain incidents seemingly having one or another character the main suspect, the Author's design pre face reveal flip flopping between somewhat masculine and androgynous, etc.)
Tbh, if I had to pick one "twist" that dissapointed me about the story, it'd be the author's identity, because it was the most obvious option going by transmigration story logic. So like, they really dropped the ball in keeping the plot "atypical" with that one. I would have liked it SO much more if the author was just the author, or if the author was actually the only other possible option. Now THAT would have kept things original.
Honestly I’ve read another transmigration story with both a reader and author while they don’t become friends because the MC is a anti-fan of the book they do become allies and whenever they’re together they give each other information on what’s happening. If you think the author would be overpowered they woke up as a baby and had to actually work their way up into their position and because the book they wrote was thousands of chapters they don’t remember everything. While the MC is only privy to the information the “protagonist” knew, is held back by a system that forces him to do unavoidable plot points, and the book is changing as time goes on and the characters are becoming real people. The author reveal isn’t really a twist. During a scene where something happens that’s not supposed to they use modern curse words no one else besides the mc uses. The next chapter they confront them. So the actual plot twist is that the author is also there.

Also from the novel, the plot twist wasn't really a plot twist when the said character being possessed is suspected throughout the story. The manhwa prob changed it so that it keeps the mystery, but I think it's kinda dumb, because in the novel at least Edith was smart enough to guess who was putting the traps. Here Edith just looks oblivious.
I wanna say I just LOVE the artstyle. At first it looked like every other generic manhwa but the more I looked the more aesthetically pleasing and easy on the eyes it became. It is now one of my favorites. Not to mention the dresses are GORGEOUS (even tho some of them would never actually stay on the body BUT that is the case in every manhwa like this). Also the colors are very well chosen and no character screams obnoxiously in your face.
I loved how some characters outfits would be colour matched, depending on how close they were, or if they were in cahoots. Or for example, in a way that would make sense in the story like when the family would wear matching colours to go to social gatherings to show their unity, I thought it was a really neat touch.
The fact that I got an ad for this Webtoon ON this video is insane LMAO I kind of like some aspects of this story but I really dislike the fact that she fell for him while he was still being an asshole to her.
tbf in the webtoon she did explicitly say it was for his looks. i definitely understand why you'd be upset at her falling for him but she literally wrote in her diary that she just thought he was hot as hell
In the end, they’re all the same 😔 IDC if she only likes him for his looks, if shes still down bad, shes still down bad, and thats a tiring trope to have to read through when its as common of a trope as naming your son “John”
I had an idea for a reincarnation story. Basically, the protagonist is reincarnated in a book where almost all the characters suffer or die at the end, with, ironically, the exception of the villainess, her. And she hated the ending, but now that she's in the story she can stop the characters in the story from suffering terrible fates, without even caring about herself.
I mean, this is sort of like ORV (omniscient readers viewpoint) but just with a woman LMAOO- It's a REALLY good comic, I would highly recommend, I'm obsessed with it. In it, Kim Dokja, our MC, gets thrown into a webnovel he was reading, and he wants to try and save the universe essentially (and ofc the characters) with his knowledge of the story. Though he isn't a villain and is just, himself, so he essentially wasn't "meant to be" there but is now and wants to change everything. Though he isn't very selfless, rather very selfish, everything he does is to save his own life, but he wants to help everyone around himself too. But of course he can't do that if he himself is dead, so, gotta have priorities
Add another twist where something the original villainess got. Also, the hero wanted to add another layer of tragedy like they were sick and wanted to live a bit longer or a cure for a family member or child or something to spice things up
@youngbloodbanana3376 I thought that in the original story, the villaness was just left with minor injuries and trauma, not much worse than most of the other characters in the story. So our reincarnated protagonist just doesn't care much because the character was minimal compared to other bigger and worse villains in the story. The villaness's crimes were minimal, such as trying to frame the MC in the story for a crime she didn't commit.
If you liked this one may I recommend "I will master this family" or "I’ll Be The Matriarch In This Life" as they renamed it not long ago for some reason.

As always with over analyzing the art style one thing that made my mind blow is that the line art for Rhyse was lighter than the characters around her that made her stand out and look more “angelic” especially with her lighter pallet compared to the characters around her. This is genius in my opinion to make her stand out as the previous main character

But The Greatest Estate Developer is genuinely one of the best isekai dramedies (drama-comedies) out there on Webtoon, and it's lowkey a crime to me that people aren't talking about it always, hahaha.

If you like this Webtoon I feel like you should try out The Greatest Estate Developer it's very similar in premise as it's a reincarnation/isekai story though it has a lot of the same vibes of this comic and is hilarious the facial expressions kill me every panel

I strongly disliked the male lead for the first 20 chapters, i dropped it at 30 but he started to grow on me within those 10 chapters. Unsure if the ml was that bad as i _did_ read it off a really bad scanlation so it was mostly gibberish tbh. That ad is actually on im not skipping.

Bro this webtoon is so good it actually caught me by surprise, I was under the impression it’d be like all the rest BUT LITTKE DID I KNOW THE TITLE WAS RIGHT. You get the learn the characters and see the ml develop. It’s amazing honestly, it’s romance, mystery, and sorta fantasy with the whole yk (not trying to spoil) but yeah! It’s one of the comics I look forward to reading when it comes around. Ty for reviewing it, as someone who enjoys the comic it was nice to get someone else’s look in 🥰
My personal fav reincarnation story is “For my Derelict Favorite”. It’s very unique, funny, and just purely entertaining. The protagonist is well characterized, as well as the antagonist.
Whaaat lmao the protagonist is insufferable. I had to drop it after a while because it kept hinting that there would be growth, but it never happens. she gave absolute no shits about the autonomy of the character she claimed to love, and was weirdly obsessed with “avenging” someone that was actively asking her to stop harassing his ex-love interest. But I also have massive ethical issues with the premise of “if a woman falls in love with someone other than the ML, it’s HER FAULT if he self-harms and anything that happens to her is DESERVED,” and the FL of FMDF literally lives her entire life based on this. Like if you or a woman you know has turned down an unstable man when she had a partner already, you would NOT be blaming her for his choices post-letdown. There’s never a moment where the MC acknowledges that the original story’s FL doesn’t owe the second lead her love just because he’s done things to help her, is hot, and likes her. Thats would be insane. Yet we are supposed to root for a FL who is actively trying to destroy someone else’s life and marriage (against the second lead’s will, no less) because the original story’s FL didn’t just drop the man she loved and get with her favorite. There are many moments where it’s pointed out and acknowledged that she never treats any of the other characters like human beings with autonomy, just as one-dimensional characters from a story, and that her utter refusal to acknowledge nuance is a problem. But it’s never addressed beyond this. We are meant to accept that the MC is horrible, but since she’s doing it for “love” of a fictional character, we must love and accept her choices anyway. This isn’t even touching on how the lead of the story is a high-key classist garbage person, and is happy to leverage the classism of others to try to ruin the life of the original FL. She literally bought her title and has the nerve to rally people beyond “oh, she isn’t like us, she’s a ~poor.” And since she wants to temper the extravagance of the ultra-wealthy and care for those less fortunate, even after her ascension to the throne, we are suppose to… dislike her for that? The only truly bad thing the original FL had actually done was that she desperately wanted to be loved by people she cared about, and the more the FL disrupts her life and marriage, the more desperate she becomes. Which would be super normal for someone in her position. Idk man the lead of FMDF is incredibly misogynistic at the end of the day, so unless this is a troll post my autistic ass has taken too seriously, I’m astonished at the recommendation when it’s clear that this channel mostly is dedicated to addressing all the problems I’ve pointed out and brand bad comics like FMDF as exactly what they are - poorly-written, classist trash. 🤷♀️

The best song in the entire human existence that you have listened to and it cant be more than one song because that'd be lying to yourself." Then my brain shortcircuits because I cant make up my mind and end up saying "I dont know." Its only years later I find out when people ask that question you just answer a song that you really like IN THAT MOMENT. 😂

A good way to tell if you're dreaming or trapped in a different world/media, is to open a book close it then open it again to see if it's different. Also a clock, look at it turn away then look at it again after a minute to see if it didn't move or drastically changed. Hurting yourself a lot of times doesn't work because brains can be very good at tricking us.
Here's a recommendation: Villains are destined to die. The mc plays this romance videogame and to get the secret ending tries to beat hard mode, in which instead of playing as the female lead she plays as the villainess a few months before normal mode. She gets transported into the game where she has to avoid being killed whilst trying to get one of the love interests romance percentage from 0 to 100 in order to beat the game. Its a really good take on the villainesses genre, one its a good story and two the videogame mecanics and love meter freshens things up and adds fun quirks to the story as well as gives the MC a very different mindset from usual as she percieves the love interests as NPCs.
Oh trust me Matty, Purple Hyacinth seems like a daunting task to get into, the fact that it has background music to go with the action on screen will make it so much easier to get into. You won't be able to put it down after a little bit. The main couple that you want to get together are kind of bad for each other and even they see it that way, but they have good chemistry and they try to work together because he doesn't want to do what he's doing and he believes she can get him out not to mention that he is trying to be better for her.
I feel really bad that they didn't expand on the main character sewing clothes for dolls, that was a nice idea, cut pretty short, unfortunetly. I really enjoyed the webtoon tho. I really wanna see a review from you on Villains are Destined to Die, sadly its not on webtoon. I think they expand the main character pretty good, though a lot of main characters lore is still not yet drawn in manhwa.
Honestly this was the first reincarnation Isekai I’d read that actually addressed the absolute shitshow the body dysmorphia would be if you were suddenly in a body that looked and behaved nothing like the one you’d been living in for your whole life, and it’s one of the reasons it implicitly has my heart.
@@falcoperegrinus3712 I actually second this. I decided to give the first few chapters a read and it’s surprisingly pretty good. Similarly to what Matty discusses in this video, the MC has to gradually earn back the trust of everyone around her, and understand the motivations of the character whose body she’s inhabiting, as well as the motivations of those around her, but does her best to make the most of it and just try to avoid involvement with the “wrong people.” There’s also a lot of jokes made at the expense of the melodrama of the entire soap opera genre, which I appreciate. It isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty good and I’m enjoying it.

21:13 I'm reminded of a manga titled "RTA Sousha wa Game Sekai kara Kaerenai" (translation: Speedrunner cannot Return from the Game World). The main character wakes up in the world of a game that he speedruns at record pace. He assumes it's a dream and immediately goes to speedrun it. Before he could be handed the holy sword, he wall clips away and starts running for the demon king. That's one way to skip past confusion and denial of isekai. I won't spoil anything past this. Obviously, you can't do this with every story.
A story I recomend is 'return of the blossoming blade' or 'return of the mount hua sect'. It's a reincarnation story that takes advantage of the fact that the protagonist is reincarnated. There's no romance because the protagonist died at 82 despite looking 30 which actually helps.
It would be so interesting if you reacted to The price is your everything. This easily became my favourite webtoon after a few chapters and I've already reread it 3 times! I think you might like it too!
I think you should try reading "Marry my Husband" if you haven't already read it, it's genuinely one of my favorite webtoons on the platform so much so that I've read through it multiple times
if you liked this one you'd also like "Trash of the Counts Family" . It's not on webtoon I don't think but it's similar! He gets reincarnated as a villain into a story he read, and tries hard to game the system to stay alive, but his actions change the story wildly
i read so many webtoons and of all of them, this is one of the few that actually makes me feel something. none of them hold a candle to ‘the spark in your eye’ though. that one made me violently sob (as did loving reaper, but i literally cannot talk about that).
Day 3 of asking for you guys to read The Greatest Estate Developer! :D Especially since you like how Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story remembers the fact that Suna is not Edith and that she lived a whole other life before becoming Edith I have a feeling you'll love The Greatest Estate Developer because of that. Both stories are isekais and both of them never forget about how the protagonist is from another world.

One of my favorite elements in the comic is the EXPRESSIONS. No one has a copy-paste face. They are complex and help drive the story without dialogue. Unfortunately, in this genre of Webtoon, that is a skill that is often lacking. But not here! The expressions actually helped me guess the plot twists and pick up on background plots (ie the comic format was integral to me experiencing the story). Hoping I can be present for a livestream eventually! It looks like a fun time!
Matty, if you'd like another meta webtoon recommendation I'd urge you to read 'The Worst Villainess'. Although it's more comedic than 'not your typical isekai romance', and is about K-dramas rather than webnovels, it's definitely in the same ballpark. The protagonist especially is really well written, her past is steadily fleshed out through the story and you see how her original life and experiences influence the choices she makes. Also she breaks tradition with an alive, loving and supportive family that you properly get to meet in the beginning.
Yeah when I read the title I was like "so it's a normal fantasy romance, got it" and then I started reading and I realized the title was actually pretty accurate. I have a soft spot for this genre, but I usually just read up until a satisfying point and just drop it bc my dopamine receptors are burnt as hell, but this series genuinely surprised me which is difficult to do bc of how many of these that I've read. One of the few series that has done that for me other than this is My In-Laws are Obsessed With Me (that story needs a shorter title) and A Stepmother's Marchen. The art style for those two in particular is just *chef's kiss* tho.
Would love to see your take on either "Ill be the Matriarch in this Life" or "10 Ways to be Dumped by a Tyrant" (when it gets more chapters, I read a lot of the webnovel first). Can't promise either are wonderful, but I genuinely enjoy them.
Resets are one thing. Resets that, instead of sending you back in time, negate canon divergence and force you back onto the original timeline sounds like a completely different beast 👀 from one perspective you’re starting over but at the same time you’re not because you aren’t starting from the same point. That’s intriguing.
Oh my God please read Purple Hyacinth. I truly mean it when I say it’s the best on the platform. It may look long now but when you reach the end you’ll be crying knowing there aren’t any more episodes.

Another surprisingly good reincarnation webtoon is From a Knight to a Lady. Main character juggles things like figuring out why her subordinate killed her, the war, what happened to her friends, the lingering spirit of the person whos body she inhabits, internalized mysogyny, and a romance with the person who she used to be at war with :) they also all have wild names
I love listening to Matty actually talk about Webtoons she likes. It's rare and a nice lil change of pace (even though the pace is still erratic, but in a good way lol)
23:06 there's a manga uve rwqd that does w similar thing called I'm in love with the villainess bc rei changes the story so much and finds out things that werent in the game she played
I wish that, in one of these reincarnation stories, they addressed what happens to the original person getting replaced by the mc. Like the mc never feels guilty that they just took over the body of another person, sometimes an innocent person with loved ones around them. That person essentially died. Even if it wasn't intentional, I would for sure feel guilty.

Ironically, Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story is the webtoon the site recommended to me after I started reading My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me, which i started reading because of your video on it! With this video i feel like its come full circle haha
Please please please read your throne if you haven’t already. To start with, their names come from greek mythology, and their story links with their name. It looks like a girlboss comic on the outside, and it is, but it’s done well, and makes it so much more impactful when she’s been outplayed by the sociopathic, god complex villain, who is actually well matched to the main character, and the constant power stuggle between them is interesting. Everything also has more impact because it’s not a reincarnation or regression where it’s all just unfair for everyone but girlboss fl, this plays out in real time, the only buff they have is switching bodies, and it’s not simple or painless to do so Then there’s the 2nd fl, they used to have the same amount of chapters, but the 2nd fl’s arc is basically finished at this point. They were friends, then started stopped being friends over the villain. Fl being upset she lost her position as crown princess, and 2nd Fl falling in love with him and taking her place (she wouldn’t have accepted if villain hadn’t announced it to the world). 2nd fl’s arc is all about growth, and strength, and she does overcome everything. Both of them have traumatic backgrounds, but they actually do something about it, and they get out of it plotting together. Here’s the best bit, no villainess, and no blatant final love interest just yet, to me it could be anyone for either of them, or even each other, so no time wasted on misunderstandings. They band together to stop psycho god complex crown prince. Fl is not once called a good person, not until some growth at least, and 2nd Fl helps her with this growth. Once you get past chapter 30 of this comic, you genuinely won’t move or be able to stop until you’ve read every chapter available. Medea and psyche are my whole life

When I saw the dolls I was like so familiar, but it wasn’t until you showed the antagonist I was like yes I definitely read this lol. After I watched your video I looked it up and I can’t believe this WEBTOON had one of my fav lines and this whole time I misremembered it being from a different WEBTOON! “Because there’s a factor called time.” I love this line so much it’s wormed its way into my story ideas lol. Im a little late to the party but I do not normally engage with webtoons. I tend to not like a lot of the art or storylines in them, but when I popped in on here to check this one out... It piqued my interest. And then in the span of two days I read the whole thing, watched the ads to read more, and cried onto the floor as I finally made the limit and have to wait. I'm not saying I'm an arbiter of taste (I am not), but I am saying I'm glad I found this video and it exposed me to something really fun and engaging to read. I even started telling my mom about the story in the car and my mom - who normally isn't interested into anything I'm into - started getting into it and theorizing future plot points with me.
I really think you should make an another video about "My in laws are obsessed with me " because I remember first time seeing that video and totally got influenced and went ahead and read that webtoon , lemme tell you I was hooked and Obsessed with it till date. i think that you would loveeee klimts kisses, ngl the artists style kinda matches yours and the story has a tonn of emotional depth and the conversations and facial expressions feel so real i sometimes forget that im reading a webtoon. its also super diverse and shows many different relationship dynamics. plus i think it has that amazing silent storytelling aspect to it

Just finished the available chapters and it is definitely a nice webtoon! Personaly, this art style and world building is not only overdone, but also lacking in many aspects. But if you are looking for this genre of story (or has low standards on how to spend your time, like me), this one is for sure above average. I love your videos, thank you for sharing with us!! For this webtoon my biggest complaints are: Generic art and boring setting - this has more to do with my personal tastes. The way the fl falls in love - a hot guy can sway hearts, yes, but if physical attraction is all it takes to make a character fall in love, thats boring. The fl is smart but cant seem to grasp the most obvious signs when it comes to ml feelings - im just tired of this specific misunderstanding trope. The original fl in the novel has NO characterization - maybe thats part of the plot so kinda have to wait and see.
A trope I hate is when any female character who doesn’t immediately likes the female lead is evil, like every time I read a comment section they drag every female side character

I especially love the bit where any time an Edith dies and the story ends and resets, a new person gets reincarnated into her and there have been So. Many. Ediths. And none of them managed to change things enough to not get killed. It’s a fairly small detail but it does so much to make the author so much scarier.
Now *that* would be a reincarnation story I would read!
I read the webnovel and it was alluded that author self inserted because they committed self exit, so my brain filled the blank and thought that the previous Ediths passed in real life in similar manner and that's why they gave up so easily after realizing the Rigelhof's ab*se and document smuggling accusation.
Oh in the novel, a few of them got close , but they were killed off with ' plot ' , a number of them worked around the SML but didn't quite catch onto the real culprit. The novel is better and more sinister. I loved reading that .🤔

Seriously check out "top Dungeon farmer" super cute animal/monster designs. Plus the "main character" is actually likeable. He has a cat monster as his business partner.
But besides these two titles, I'm having a hard time finding good stories to read.

The ML reminds me of Mr. Darcy: coming into a relationship with preconceived notions and biases based on his partner’s family, but overcoming those by self improvement and introspection without pressuring their love interest with their betterment? Hell yeah. Main difference being that Killian becoming lovey dovey with Edith just made her confused, which is also very funny.

NGL,I generally stay far way from webtoons with cold, rude, arrogant Mls but this one is better since he had a genuine reason for his behaviour and he had a good redemption arc. I just hate how much she had to suffer because in the novel it was brutal. Also since you talked about Mr. Darcy, I would recommend the manhwa, Glass Wall. The main characters are really Jane Austen coded and the Ml is like Mr Darcy too 😭😭. Although here too the fl had quite a suffering but the Ml suffered too and had a good redemption arc.
Something cool I wanna point out about the antagonis (this is kinda spoilery) is that later on its revealed they tried writing other stories after the one about Rhyse was a success.
But they had no luck as they kept trying to reuse the same archetype over in the form of Rhyse and Cliff. And if that isn't commentary on RoFan stories regurgitating the same kind of "perfect" MCs and Male Leads over and over again in hopes of striking gold then I don't know what is.
I also REALLY like Cliff because the dude is basically the typical Male Lead who's terrible to everyone but the MC who they love, and it really shows how unlikable and slimy a person like that would be to be around for anyone not their love interest.
My only real complaint here is that the twist on who the author is possessing is kinda boring and obvious, if not outright revealed from the start.
There were really only two suspects but the one they chose as the culprit is just really obvious from the onset especially if you're familiar with Villainess Isekai and functionally makes them less interedting as a character. It's a shame two because the other suspect wouldve been far more interesting to see how Rhyse and her family would've handled.
And I do think it was SUPPOSED to be a twist because the story tries several times to misdirect you (certain incidents seemingly having one or another character the main suspect, the Author's design pre face reveal flip flopping between somewhat masculine and androgynous, etc.)
Tbh, if I had to pick one "twist" that dissapointed me about the story, it'd be the author's identity, because it was the most obvious option going by transmigration story logic. So like, they really dropped the ball in keeping the plot "atypical" with that one.
I would have liked it SO much more if the author was just the author, or if the author was actually the only other possible option. Now THAT would have kept things original.
Honestly I’ve read another transmigration story with both a reader and author while they don’t become friends because the MC is a anti-fan of the book they do become allies and whenever they’re together they give each other information on what’s happening. If you think the author would be overpowered they woke up as a baby and had to actually work their way up into their position and because the book they wrote was thousands of chapters they don’t remember everything. While the MC is only privy to the information the “protagonist” knew, is held back by a system that forces him to do unavoidable plot points, and the book is changing as time goes on and the characters are becoming real people. The author reveal isn’t really a twist. During a scene where something happens that’s not supposed to they use modern curse words no one else besides the mc uses. The next chapter they confront them. So the actual plot twist is that the author is also there.

Also from the novel, the plot twist wasn't really a plot twist when the said character being possessed is suspected throughout the story. The manhwa prob changed it so that it keeps the mystery, but I think it's kinda dumb, because in the novel at least Edith was smart enough to guess who was putting the traps. Here Edith just looks oblivious.
I wanna say I just LOVE the artstyle. At first it looked like every other generic manhwa but the more I looked the more aesthetically pleasing and easy on the eyes it became. It is now one of my favorites. Not to mention the dresses are GORGEOUS (even tho some of them would never actually stay on the body BUT that is the case in every manhwa like this). Also the colors are very well chosen and no character screams obnoxiously in your face.

I loved how some characters outfits would be colour matched, depending on how close they were, or if they were in cahoots. Or for example, in a way that would make sense in the story like when the family would wear matching colours to go to social gatherings to show their unity, I thought it was a really neat touch.

I had an idea for a reincarnation story. Basically, the protagonist is reincarnated in a book where almost all the characters suffer or die at the end, with, ironically, the exception of the villainess, her. And she hated the ending, but now that she's in the story she can stop the characters in the story from suffering terrible fates, without even caring about herself.
That's sounds so interesting. Please try write that, I'd love to read it one day.

I mean, this is sort of like ORV (omniscient readers viewpoint) but just with a woman LMAOO- It's a REALLY good comic, I would highly recommend, I'm obsessed with it. In it, Kim Dokja, our MC, gets thrown into a webnovel he was reading, and he wants to try and save the universe essentially (and ofc the characters) with his knowledge of the story. Though he isn't a villain and is just, himself, so he essentially wasn't "meant to be" there but is now and wants to change everything. Though he isn't very selfless, rather very selfish, everything he does is to save his own life, but he wants to help everyone around himself too. But of course he can't do that if he himself is dead, so, gotta have priorities
Add another twist where something the original villainess got. Also, the hero wanted to add another layer of tragedy like they were sick and wanted to live a bit longer or a cure for a family member or child or something to spice things up
@youngbloodbanana3376 I thought that in the original story, the villaness was just left with minor injuries and trauma, not much worse than most of the other characters in the story. So our reincarnated protagonist just doesn't care much because the character was minimal compared to other bigger and worse villains in the story. The villaness's crimes were minimal, such as trying to frame the MC in the story for a crime she didn't commit.

As always with over analyzing the art style one thing that made my mind blow is that the line art for Rhyse was lighter than the characters around her that made her stand out and look more “angelic” especially with her lighter pallet compared to the characters around her. I strongly disliked the male lead for the first 20 chapters, i dropped it at 30 but he started to grow on me within those 10 chapters. Unsure if the ml was that bad as i _did_ read it off a really bad scanlation so it was mostly gibberish tbh. That ad is actually on im not skipping.

Bro this webtoon is so good it actually caught me by surprise, I was under the impression it’d be like all the rest BUT LITTKE DID I KNOW THE TITLE WAS RIGHT. You get the learn the characters and see the ml develop. It’s amazing honestly, it’s romance, mystery, and sorta fantasy with the whole yk (not trying to spoil) but yeah! It’s one of the comics I look forward to reading when it comes around. Ty for reviewing it, as someone who enjoys the comic it was nice to get someone else’s look in 🥰
My personal fav reincarnation story is “For my Derelict Favorite”. It’s very unique, funny, and just purely entertaining. The protagonist is well characterized, as well as the antagonist.
Whaaat lmao the protagonist is insufferable. I had to drop it after a while because it kept hinting that there would be growth, but it never happens. she gave absolute no shits about the autonomy of the character she claimed to love, and was weirdly obsessed with “avenging” someone that was actively asking her to stop harassing his ex-love interest. But I also have massive ethical issues with the premise of “if a woman falls in love with someone other than the ML, it’s HER FAULT if he self-harms and anything that happens to her is DESERVED,” and the FL of FMDF literally lives her entire life based on this. Like if you or a woman you know has turned down an unstable man when she had a partner already, you would NOT be blaming her for his choices post-letdown. There’s never a moment where the MC acknowledges that the original story’s FL doesn’t owe the second lead her love just because he’s done things to help her, is hot, and likes her. Thats would be insane. Yet we are supposed to root for a FL who is actively trying to destroy someone else’s life and marriage (against the second lead’s will, no less) because the original story’s FL didn’t just drop the man she loved and get with her favorite.
There are many moments where it’s pointed out and acknowledged that she never treats any of the other characters like human beings with autonomy, just as one-dimensional characters from a story, and that her utter refusal to acknowledge nuance is a problem. She literally bought her title and has the nerve to rally people beyond “oh, she isn’t like us, she’s a ~poor.” And since she wants to temper the extravagance of the ultra-wealthy and care for those less fortunate, even after her ascension to the throne, we are suppose to… dislike her for that? The only truly bad thing the original FL had actually done was that she desperately wanted to be loved by people she cared about, and the more the FL disrupts her life and marriage, the more desperate she becomes. Which would be super normal for someone in her position. Idk man the lead of FMDF is incredibly misogynistic at the end of the day, so unless this is a troll post my autistic ass has taken too seriously, I’m astonished at the recommendation when it’s clear that this channel mostly is dedicated to addressing all the problems I’ve pointed out and brand bad comics like FMDF as exactly what they are - poorly-written, classist trash. 🤷♀️

A good way to tell if you're dreaming or trapped in a different world/media, is to open a book close it then open it again to see if it's different. Also a clock, look at it turn away then look at it again after a minute to see if it didn't move or drastically changed. Hurting yourself a lot of times doesn't work because brains can be very good at tricking us.
Here's a recommendation: Villains are destined to die. The mc plays this romance videogame and to get the secret ending tries to beat hard mode, in which instead of playing as the female lead she plays as the villainess a few months before normal mode. She gets transported into the game where she has to avoid being killed whilst trying to get one of the love interests romance percentage from 0 to 100 in order to beat the game. Its a really good take on the villainesses genre, one its a good story and two the videogame mecanics and love meter freshens things up and adds fun quirks to the story as well as gives the MC a very different mindset from usual as she percieves the love interests as NPCs.

Oh trust me Matty, Purple Hyacinth seems like a daunting task to get into, the fact that it has background music to go with the action on screen will make it so much easier to get into. You won't be able to put it down after a little bit. The main couple that you want to get together are kind of bad for each other and even they see it that way, but they have good chemistry and they try to work together because he doesn't want to do what he's doing and he believes she can get him out not to mention that he is trying to be better for her.
I feel really bad that they didn't expand on the main character sewing clothes for dolls, that was a nice idea, cut pretty short, unfortunetly. I really enjoyed the webtoon tho.
I really wanna see a review from you on Villains are Destined to Die, sadly its not on webtoon. I think they expand the main character pretty good, though a lot of main characters lore is still not yet drawn in manhwa.

@@falcoperegrinus3712 I actually second this. I decided to give the first few chapters a read and it’s surprisingly pretty good. Similarly to what Matty discusses in this video, the MC has to gradually earn back the trust of everyone around her, and understand the motivations of the character whose body she’s inhabiting, as well as the motivations of those around her, but does her best to make the most of it and just try to avoid involvement with the “wrong people.” There’s also a lot of jokes made at the expense of the melodrama of the entire soap opera genre, which I appreciate.
It isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty good and I’m enjoying it.

21:13 I'm reminded of a manga titled "RTA Sousha wa Game Sekai kara Kaerenai" (translation: Speedrunner cannot Return from the Game World). The main character wakes up in the world of a game that he speedruns at record pace. He assumes it's a dream and immediately goes to speedrun it. Before he could be handed the holy sword, he wall clips away and starts running for the demon king.
That's one way to skip past confusion and denial of isekai. I won't spoil anything past this. Obviously, you can't do this with every story.
A story I recomend is 'return of the blossoming blade' or 'return of the mount hua sect'. It's a reincarnation story that takes advantage of the fact that the protagonist is reincarnated. There's no romance because the protagonist died at 82 despite looking 30 which actually helps.
That comic is hilarious.

i read so many webtoons and of all of them, this is one of the few that actually makes me feel something. none of them hold a candle to ‘the spark in your eye’ though. that one made me violently sob (as did loving reaper, but i literally cannot talk about that).

Day 3 of asking for you guys to read The Greatest Estate Developer! :D Especially since you like how Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story remembers the fact that Suna is not Edith and that she lived a whole other life before becoming Edith I have a feeling you'll love The Greatest Estate Developer because of that. Both stories are isekais and both of them never forget about how the protagonist is from another world.

Fantastic review, btw! One of my favorite elements in the comic is the EXPRESSIONS. No one has a copy-paste face. They are complex and help drive the story without dialogue. Unfortunately, in this genre of Webtoon, that is a skill that is often lacking. But not here! The expressions actually helped me guess the plot twists and pick up on background plots (ie the comic format was integral to me experiencing the story).

Matty, if you'd like another meta webtoon recommendation I'd urge you to read 'The Worst Villainess'. Although it's more comedic than 'not your typical isekai romance', and is about K-dramas rather than webnovels, it's definitely in the same ballpark. The protagonist especially is really well written, her past is steadily fleshed out through the story and you see how her original life and experiences influence the choices she makes. Also she breaks tradition with an alive, loving and supportive family that you properly get to meet in the beginning.
I love this comic SO much so I'm really happy you've decided to read it.

Yeah when I read the title I was like "so it's a normal fantasy romance, got it" and then I started reading and I realized the title was actually pretty accurate. I have a soft spot for this genre, but I usually just read up until a satisfying point and just drop it bc my dopamine receptors are burnt as hell, but this series genuinely surprised me which is difficult to do bc of how many of these that I've read. One of the few series that has done that for me other than this is My In-Laws are Obsessed With Me (that story needs a shorter title) and A Stepmother's Marchen. The art style for those two in particular is just *chef's kiss* tho.
Would love to see your take on either "Ill be the Matriarch in this Life" or "10 Ways to be Dumped by a Tyrant" (when it gets more chapters, I read a lot of the webnovel first). Can't promise either are wonderful, but I genuinely enjoy them.

Main character juggles things like figuring out why her subordinate killed her, the war, what happened to her friends, the lingering spirit of the person whos body she inhabits, internalized mysogyny, and a romance with the person who she used to be at war with :) they also all have wild names
I think you would really like "from a knight to a lady" it is genuinely so good, the worldbuilding the characters, all of it
I love listening to Matty actually talk about Webtoons she likes. It's rare and a nice lil change of pace (even though the pace is still erratic, but in a good way lol)

I wish that, in one of these reincarnation stories, they addressed what happens to the original person getting replaced by the mc. Like the mc never feels guilty that they just took over the body of another person, sometimes an innocent person with loved ones around them. That person essentially died. Even if it wasn't intentional, I would for sure feel guilty.

Ironically, Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story is the webtoon the site recommended to me after I started reading My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me, which i started reading because of your video on it! With this video i feel like its come full circle haha

To start with, their names come from greek mythology, and their story links with their name.
It looks like a girlboss comic on the outside, and it is, but it’s done well, and makes it so much more impactful when she’s been outplayed by the sociopathic, god complex villain, who is actually well matched to the main character, and the constant power stuggle between them is interesting.
Everything also has more impact because it’s not a reincarnation or regression where it’s all just unfair for everyone but girlboss fl, this plays out in real time, the only buff they have is switching bodies, and it’s not simple or painless to do so
Then there’s the 2nd fl, they used to have the same amount of chapters, but the 2nd fl’s arc is basically finished at this point. They were friends, then started stopped being friends over the villain. Fl being upset she lost her position as crown princess, and 2nd Fl falling in love with him and taking her place (she wouldn’t have accepted if villain hadn’t announced it to the world). 2nd fl’s arc is all about growth, and strength, and she does overcome everything.
Both of them have traumatic backgrounds, but they actually do something about it, and they get out of it plotting together.
Here’s the best bit, no villainess, and no blatant final love interest just yet, to me it could be anyone for either of them, or even each other, so no time wasted on misunderstandings. They band together to stop psycho god complex crown prince.
Fl is not once called a good person, not until some growth at least, and 2nd Fl helps her with this growth.
Once you get past chapter 30 of this comic, you genuinely won’t move or be able to stop until you’ve read every chapter available.

Im a little late to the party but I do not normally engage with webtoons. I tend to not like a lot of the art or storylines in them, but when I popped in on here to check this one out... It piqued my interest. And then in the span of two days I read the whole thing, watched the ads to read more, and cried onto the floor as I finally made the limit and have to wait. I'm not saying I'm an arbiter of taste (I am not), but I am saying I'm glad I found this video and it exposed me to something really fun and engaging to read. I even started telling my mom about the story in the car and my mom - who normally isn't interested into anything I'm into - started getting into it and theorizing future plot points with me.

For this webtoon my biggest complaints are:
Generic art and boring setting - this has more to do with my personal tastes.
The way the fl falls in love - a hot guy can sway hearts, yes, but if physical attraction is all it takes to make a character fall in love, thats boring.
The fl is smart but cant seem to grasp the most obvious signs when it comes to ml feelings - im just tired of this specific misunderstanding trope.
The original fl in the novel has NO characterization - maybe thats part of the plot so kinda have to wait and see.
