Overlord is quite the popular anime. The "big bad guy" is the protagonist of the series and Clementine is a super evil character that was killed in revenge on the show.
I'm a big Overlord fan so I pre-ordered this game ASAP (with your like and discount, of course). The series creator put a significant amount of detail into the design of Nazarick and this game is the first time we will see many of these areas represented in a visual format. Some context for the normies: The main character of the series is a nerdy gamer who was summoned to another world isekai style as his in-game max level avatar the Overlord Ainz Ooal Gown (the skeleton dude). Summoned alongside him was his guild's stronghold the Great Tomb of Nazarick as well as all the loyal NPCs. As part of the original game, Nazarick was a legendary dungeon designed by it's members to be the ultimate gauntlet of doom. Stuffed with riches, no raiders have ever entered Nazarick and escaped to tell the tale. The main character of the game, Clementine, was an insane assassin who murdered some of Ainz's associates for which he killed her literally with his own hands. For enemies with knowledge or skills he deems potentially useful Ainz typically brings their bodies back to Nazarick, resurrects them, and interrogates and/or experiments on them for further benefit. Resurrection generally comes with a loss of levels and abilities so Clementine starts out weaker and has to regain all her abilities.
His comment on attacking in this game is exactly how I feel about Demonaica, if the combat was more streamlined instead of a fighting game layout, also if there were more moves unlocked at the start seeing as how you don't use weapons .

Loved the novel and anime too. I'm really curious to see if/how they are going to "animate" the Holy Kingdom arc. I don't think the political climate in the west would allow the "royal bludgeon" scene and the likes.

No. Anchors are heavy and meant much like a grapple hook. You can use a grapple hook like a morning star on a chain sure, but you might as well use a hook or spiked ball unless you want a slashing method. And I think anchors are post medieval.

I enjoyed a lot Record of Lodoss War, the performance of that game is outstanding, this one seems to lose a bit in that area. I might check it out on sale. Nice review.
Apparently it got quite popular as there is a western version coming out here in Sweden in 15 days it seems, both normal and Collector's Edition, had totally missed this game.
Great review as ever :) I pre-ordered this on a chance to up my Play Asia order to over $100 dollars for the free shipping, I've a copy of Steins gate Elite coming from them along with Seven Pirates which your review sold me on with the nipple flying saucers ;) Used the links and code of course. Play Asia emailed me about this game as they had incorrect pricing stated at some point and if I had pre-ordered with incorrect price would be entitled to a part refund and to contact them. It was around £27 for me but when it had incorrect pricing was £38ish

Did not realize this was going to be a game. Long story short, love the anime as soon as I heard of it years ago but hate the main character. It's basically a magical "dotHack" version. Long story and not to spoil the show. Clementine did something she shouldn't have and died. Why she is a main character, I don't know.
I've been married for 20 years, so I feel like I'm walking through fire everyday. I've learned so much from my mistakes, I'm thinking of making a few more. 😅
the animations look cheap like theyre missing most of the animation frames, and the movement look awkward and clunky af. castlevania symphony of the night looks like it controlled, moved and looked better as far as smoothness goes, personally wouldnt spend more than like 5 bucks on this
They coulda made one of the best war strat games of all time and they made... picross and a hack and slash with a character that no one cars about.. we wanna be the main character not some side villan

Based on what I see I don't know how you rated it at 8. To me it looks like a 2 and this is coming from a huge fan of overlord. I think they could have done way better with spells and made it like a RPG with a final fantasy fighting style. I don't like the way it looks as a side scroll, it reminds me to much of the old consoles. Castlevania type of gameplay. They were lazy with putting this out on the market. It could have been way better.

Btw I haven't played this game I just wanted to say If you didn't like the game and concepts fair enough, if you did enjoy it and it has peaked your interest then give the anime a watch it's a hella fun experience with some ups and downs (S3 CGI) but yeah if that is something you like and want something more in detail and descriptive read the light novels they are so good and expand on the world and characters so much in a way the anime can't with its limited time. If you still want to see something read the manga but I dropped that cos it's way behind but yeah if you do want to delve into the world of overlord that's up to you if you want to leave it as a metroidvania because that's your thing then I respect that if you're an anime normie then I'm the same for metroidvania let's just appreciate this one instance our interest cross over each other.
The frame rate looks absolutely abysmal in the footage. Like it's capped at 30fps with constant drops. A game like this should be locked at 60fps. Hard pass on the switch version for me.
I just got this on Switch and I already regret not getting it on PC instead, the framerate is exactly as it looks like in the video, constant 15-20 FPS and extremely choppy. The Switch port is absolutely unacceptable.
I love overlord but I don't understand why they would make a game using the antagonist instead of the protagonist I don't know how I feel about paying as somebody I absolutely hated in the anime
Because the protagonist of the anime would be the villain in most stories. The show flipped the script, and the game flipped it back to the default. It’s intentionally ironic Yeah she’s a sociopath, but without context, she’s the badass damsel in distress Besides, this is the best way to have Castle Nazarick as the main setting, and that’s just the coolest part of the show
Holy crap the fr looks absolutely horrid! Please tell me that's your capture card and not the game?? Because there should be no excuse for a 2D sidescroller such as this to run this poorly. My God!!! If it is the game the devs better patch it up... this game looks too promising to be ruined by such poor performance (how many times have we all been in this situation with a new Switch release?).
Excellent review as always Jordan. I'm definitely placing an order with this and some other goodies. I loved Records of Lodoss Wars and I don't think I will be disappointed in this. 🪄

I think it’s better that Lodoss in most areas, but it also has bigger flaws that drag it down a bit.
