Really cool video, would be cool to see more of these battles as for me, i felt the video got stronger as it went on, becoming more intense and representing more the feeling of the sport. I would also say the grading could have been more gritty so personally the photographer won for me, i feel the pictures had a nice dark and intense energy going for it and the motion blur and everything was a very nice touch P.S i feel for cinematography you would have benefited more with a bit more time, especially for the big rig you were carrying haha, but thanks for delivering us this video it was very educational
Love the feedback! I had so much fun creating it and I agree, maybe next time we do more time for the video and less for the photos to make it more challenging or maybe a spin the wheel, so no one knows whats going to happen....??
Great job Ross! Especially baring in mind the time/ camera limitations. A busier muddy foreground on some video shots could have been interesting and those Cine primes would have given the shots more texture. Stills are always quicker. I think it would have been fairer if you had had 15 mins more shooting time to even things up a bit… Loved the video!
@@RossWelch you of course. The other photos, while ok, seemed very preset-heavy. Could be a personal preference as I prefer for cinematic/clean image vs purposely making them look grungy.
Considering the small amount of time I'd say both outcomes were pretty good! For me the video had a mixture of shots that worked and some that weren't as good; as a collection of shots there were maybe too many lens options and a bit of a mixture of shallow depth of field and everything being in focus. I'd maybe use all lens from 1 set so the characteristics matched more closely. What I loved was the fact that you tried some risky stuff with limited equipment (drink shot) and I think it worked out better that maybe you'd planned. As a collection, I thought the photos were amazing; they all felt like they were from the same 'collection' and they told the story really well. They looked gritty, and really matched the sport. The array of techniques used in that amount of time was great and considering you never moved a light, they all looked well lit. I also think Max directed the shoot slightly better; he seemed like he had a game plan from the start and he directed the boxer well at all times. For me the photos won but I think you both did a great job and getting to see the process is way more helpful as it shows how much you have to be able to adapt and pivot on the spot all whilst staying cool in front of the client/talent. Great video Ross!
@@RossWelch Pro with a smart phone vs beginner with all the gear... Or maybe you take 1 brief but shoot one as a low budget and then shoot the same thing as if it were a high budget shoot
@@RossWelchoh man! He was right on the money. The video turned out really good, and to do it all in 30 minutes was insane! Ideas for a series…. Hmm… I like the track Carla is on. Maybe a newbie with a lot of expensive lights, vs a pro with only 1 light. Dinky camera vs a beginner with a pro camera (like your rigged out one or a red or something) Commercial shoot, pro vs beginner. Beginner had expensive equipment and an hour to do the shoot, Pro has minimal and only 20-30 minutes to make it happen. 2 locations, timer stops between locations. Idk just some fun ideas. The pro vs beginner is good because it drives the point home that someone experienced with how they think and view things can do better than someone loaded up with crazy equipment. Lowers the barrier to entry for ppl that think they need $1000s to get going. Also might help get people looking at your course too if you can provide that solution to them.
Who won?? 🏆

Love the detailed breakdown Carl! 1-0 to Max! What challenge would you like to see next in the series??

Talk soon!
Yo Ross! Next time mute all the photographer’s audio and freeze frame all his movements. Let’s see how he likes them onions. 😂😂😂
