  • A lap with the commentator, in this time driver, Martin Brundle in Ligier Renault J39 in one rare footage of the 1993 onboard camera on Ligier's car. Ligier used the same engine of the top Williams-Renault combination with RS5 and RS6 V10 engines in 1993 and 1994. However the best engine of the grid was not necessary to suprime the lack of aerodinamic design in Ligier cars, leading to short results at grid. In 1995 Ligier changed to Mugen-Honda and Benetton Formula had the chance to use Renault engines, ending with the compatriots relation of french team.

    With Brundle and "Blund-le" not only in the same sport but being teammates, I think it's only fair that from this point onwards, the Sky Sports commentator is referred to as Fred Brundle, in deference to Felipe Nasr.

    The Footwork team bought McLaren's suspension system, and lap times improved right away.

      From what I recall of that season, they started really well, and had some bright moments including podiums for both Brundle and Blundell. Great engine with the Renault power unit, same as in the all-conquering Williams, but they probably didn't develop the chassis quite so well over the season as they weren't a large team (like Williams, Benetton, Ferrari or McLaren of that era).

    • @mooreanonumbers
      @mooreanonumbers 2 года назад

      Ligier was in a awkward position in the early 90s where they were basically gifted a test track(Magny-Cours) by Mitterand but it ended up being a pretty bad reference given how smooth it was for the era. They had some very good qualifying performances occasionally but I think they had a lot of off week-ends where they just ended up chasing set-ups.

    • @nehylen5738

      Indeed. Basically they were crap at Monaco, and within the top 6 at Hockenheim. What's astounding is that despite being in such a good position (5th constructor in 93), they were still struggling for cash, barely any sponsors on that car either way, compared to others much further down the grid.

      @@lordmaximus780 Yup, Martin got a podium at Imola (where four cars only finished though) and Blundell was on the podium here at Hockenheim (with Martin 5th) and in the first race at Kyalami (helped by the late rainshower). However Martin scored several times, got more points than Mark (who only scored three times) and that probably gave him a run at the McLaren seat (but then again his competitor, after Prost gave up, was Alliot, so that was a piece of cake).

      He was dominated at Benetton in 92 by Schumacher and in 94 by Hakkinen but was equal against Barricehello in Jordan in 96.
      He did two very good races in 95 , finishing 3rd in SPA and 4 th at MagnyCours , attacking Couldthard for 3rd at the end.
      At an era where abandons due driver errors were much more common than nowadays , he was regularly bringing cars home nonetheless.
      And generally, he was always doing better in races than in qualifs.
      I always thoughthe should have won at the least a race someday , may be if Benetton have kept him for 93 and onwards.

      @@stephenhumphrey7935 I think part of the problem was that Brundle was Tom Walkinshaw's man (not Briatore's), and when Walkinshaw left Benetton, Brundle had no internal support.
