TAPE WIZARD | DOCUMENTARY BY KILIAN VIDOUREK

- In the fall of 2019 Notre Dame student Kilian Vidourek reached out to me about making a mini documentary about me and my work as Amulets. Funded by a grant from his school, KIlian flew out to Portland and followed me around for the week leading up to my album release show for "Between Distant and Remote". This experience was really fascinating for both of us and I think he did a great job capturing me in my element. Since its release Tape Wizard has been played at the Bellingham Music Film Festival, Bolton International Film Festival, Portland Film Festival, Mid America Film Festival, and The Notre Dame Student Film Festival to name a few.

I just bought your vinyl album.
I have delved into many instruments over the years. Your channel inspired me to explore analog tape more. I am actively putting together a suitcase of drone that will be a permanent set of gear to accompany my other instruments. It won’t be like yours that is perpetual in additions and subtractions of analog gear. Thank you for your amazing musical thoughts and creations. I wish you continued success.
"I played guitar and... I felt better." One hundred percent right on.
Yeah. I can definitely identify with that. Been playing every day for 30 years and love it as much now as I ever did.
"its not great, wich is great !" sums it up
cassettes in a nutshell
@@amuletsmusic Mr. RAmulets... do you know about FuTel?
I scrolled down to comments, to quote exactly the same sentence :D
what is futel ??? I must know
@@cameronpaschal2484 Google them! It's people in PDX reclaiming payphones & keeping them operational... but also making things more interesting! You can call one & it will ring. I live in NY now & I do it sometimes. I just ask random people questions. Or you can call & listen to recordings.
...check it out!
Dude the 2am thing. Spot on. Sad music doesn't mean you're sad. Art is a healthy outlet for all our human emotions.
💯
Michael, I agree %100 I've listen to this emotion in music since I can remember and it has the reverse effect, and my favorite tracks tend to be the ones that make me cry and I truly believe that part of the happiness I get from it is because your like " the person that wrote this feels just like me, I'm not broken or alone because listen to all these seemingly normal , successful even sad bastards all over the globe. No I don't wanna die, no I don't want to shit the whole world out. I want to be alive and live in my emotions when they rise up inside of me. And that experience ends in joy everytime. Whaah! Rant over 😮💨😁🥳
Side bar: HELLO AMULETS 👋😅 I'm m Brian and I hope I run into you someday so I can tell you in person how much I love what you do, I'm just across the i-5 bridge in Vancouver right in the heart of downtown!
I always figured the person behind AMULETS must be a kind type of guy.
thank you! so nice of you
Creating things that didn't exist before and creating for the fuck of it. I FULLY support this!
so fucking humble, you deserve the world. Don't let nobody tell you you're bad at anything.
Sometimes the youtube algorithm throws up some gold. Say hello to a new fan.
Watched on Kenny beats stream a week ago and had to come back to rewatch. Amazing doc hella inspiring.
Man, Randall is a national treasure. Great music, great documentary. Love it.
I just didn’t want it to end.
I n f i n i t e c y c l e
Someone give this guy a Sci-Fi movie soundtrack...
ugh I would LOVE that
I’m from Portland as well. Seeing all these pre-covid shots makes me miss walking up hawthorne or Mississippi and just vibing at any given coffee shop. I think you do a really good job of capturing the feel and softness of our city in your music, man.
Does it also capture the anarchy, violence, and rioting?
@@i-never-look-at-replies-lol yes
I felt the same. Saw the copyright 2019 at the end and was like, "I remember when Portland was like this." Never thought I'd be nostalgic for Fall 2019, 15 months ago.
Call it the Gillsan Ave. "walk that way'.
Now, you have to jump over homeless people to get to the coffee shop

aww thank you so much!
@@amuletsmusic still got any of those t-shirts avail?
I needed this. Didn't know I needed it. But I did.
this is such a great and well made documentary, and it's really cool and inspirational to get a glimpse into your process!
🙏
The most outstanding thing I've seen for years
"I hope people buy this.... I hope people like it...., nah it's fine, I like it!" You are a true artist Randall. Hope you continue your music for a very long time buddy.
this perfectly matched what i thought a documentary about you would be like
🖤
Make no mistake, I love love love living in the digital age and wouldn't go back, but I'm thankful I got to experience analog tech from cassettes to diskettes to VCRs - they had a charm and a satisfaction to them.
Rock on, tape wizard 👍
Can confirm I have walked up to Randall in Austin not knowing his name but knowing and loving Amulets. Great doc and great music
hi again!
@@amuletsmusic Hey Randall! I miss going to your shows in Austin. hope everything is as good as it can be in Portland!! :)
Great video, well edited. Very candid, too, in a good way. Thanks for doing your art.
For a moment I didn't think I was witnessing this on the internet. Thanks for sharing this.
Respect for that wall of sorted cords.
I could totally see or rather hear this music in a game.
I'd never heard of you before this popped up in my recommended que. But once in awhile the RUclips algorithm gremlins get it right! Instant sub and deep dive into the archives!
Haha ditto this
really enjoyed that, it's good to put a face to the name.
Lovely. Thanks for sharing!
I like this style of editing, please keep making more videos with your face.
I'm not sure why this popped up on my recommendations, but I'm so glad it did. Really enjoyed this introduction to your work and look forward to checking out more of your gorgeous music. Perfect soundtrack for these times.
Researching 4-track cassette recording brought me here.
I dig it man. I get the 2 am creative outlet therapy. Feels good to get dark in the dark.
This is so wholesome. Just a man and his tapes. uwu
It's funny tape manipulation was what I did with my neighbor when I was like 12. Used a radio shack battery tape recorder and my friends walkman to just record random shit and play from tape to tape layering on these computer cassettes we got at a tag sale. Lots of beeps and buzzes. I still have a box of these things from the 70's. To hear my high pitched kid voice is a major goof. Of course later we got into Eno and tried to make a band. Your creativity reminded me of how natural playing with sound was.
How did you do "Tape to tape" layering? We used to record two things, play them back live and record on a 3'rd deck. Rinse, repeat, until it was a wall of fuzzy mud.
love this. so glad there is a documentary ❤️
Subtle yet fascinating glimpse into a psyche possessed by true genius.
aww thanks!!
this shit was so good, I didnt want it to end. I personally thing there needs to be a longer, more in depth doc on Randall. Thanks for the awesomeness!
great to see a documentary , amazing!
Inspirational! I hope to bump into you in Portland and call you Amulets.
Rewatching again from another account. Man, i can't get enough.

Gorgeous. Your performance at the end reminds me of the beautiful and sometimes haunting ethereal soundscapes of Sigur Rós. Glad to have found your channel. Thank you for sharing.
