  • The Tent Graves of Tennessee were an aesthetic tradition in the South only used for about 100 years with the earliest graves sites dating back to the 1820’s. Join me on a search through the countryside for these unique burial markers for those pioneers gone before us.

Edward Everett was known for his many accomplishments, as well as having been the "other" politician who spoke on that fateful day at Gettysburg. His two hour long speech has long been forgotten, while Abe Lincoln's two minute speech has been memorized by thousands of school children over the years. No wonder he was mentioned on that tent marker you ran across. Fascinating!

In search of the tent graves, I met Carlon, the cemetery lawn mower and his wife, who invited me over to see his 120+ yr old barn full of great old stuff. I hope you enjoy that video too! Thanks for watching!

I LOVE the guy at 4:21. That's exactly how the older generation on my dad's side of the family talked (in rural Virginia). Has a real friendly backwoodsy-folk type of thing going on.

    Hi Dray,
I just discovered your amazing channel. I really like the varied content you present especially the ones which cover the historical locations. By the way Pisgah is the Hebrew word for summit. Many of the names of churches have their origin in Hebrew. Cheers!

I've never heard of tent graves. At second church you read the inscription on the side. I guess back in that time that's how they recorded the obituary. This is interesting, but the graves are so close together and the are not particularly in a line or row as they are now. I have seen the flat stone on top of the graves instead of head stones.

They seem to differ from region to region across the world! I find it very interesting.
