Hello, a friend of mine sent me this video because me & my wife also purchased an old bank in my wife's hometown in florida. The bank was built in 1907 & closed in 1936 then became the post office for many years until the new one was built. Your video caught my attention because ours went from bank to post office to insurance company. Ive been in construction my whole life & have a deep passion for historic buildings. Im doing most of the restorations myself & have learned a lot about what not to do with historical buildings. The most important part of a 100 year old building is they have to breathe! If your brick is clay or limestone fired brick, never use anything harder than a type n mortor mix - 1 portland, 1 lime & 6 sand - this is very important. Those old bricks need to breathe & you never want to seal them with any material that isn't a breathable material. I'm currently starting the interior remodeling of the building & would love to trade building war stories with you. This has definitely been a roller coaster ride of emotions for us both, but it is an intense labor of love for me & my wife. Seeing your first video actually cheered me up, especially how excited you guys were about your purchase. Most people also thought we were crazy & some still do, but keep it rockin because the satisfaction of giving an old building some love is very rewarding for us & it is definitely an adventure! Thanks for the videos, maybe we'll create a few & post them ourselves...
Another retired contractor that loves old bank buildings too. Originally got a degree in finance and became a bank voice before switching to construction.
In a small town you can always find a couple strong young men to help with lifting toting and tugging. Post a want add at local stores. Organize your deliveries and trash runs with them and save your back. New subscriber and fellow renovator.
It's crazy, but I am almost sure my Grandfather stenciled the lettering in your window there. There is so little of his work left-I wish it wasn't cracked.
Let me tell you as a construction worker…..you would be amazed at the extra effort and time you get from a crew when you bring them coffee, pastries, pizza. Etc.
Wow that was a lot of back breaking work. Hope you found the local chiropractor and a good massage therapist if needed. You've made tremendous progress already. I'm impressed. So nice of the man at the trash center to wave the fee. I bet a lot of the townsfolk are happy that you have bought the bank and are excited and interested in how you will transform it and bring the building back to life. You're making great progress.😊
I knew a contractor that bought and converted an old bank. He wound up calling it Hank, a combination of home and bank. He lived in it about 12 years, then sold it and bought an old church, and the process started all over again...lol
Found you last night! So looking forward to following this adventure with you! Love what you are doing! As a musician, I have the fortune of traveling through many small towns all year, and I see so many beautiful buildings falling to decay, and it breaks my heart. Thank you for saving this one! I will be anxiously awaiting each video. Your enthusiasm, and work ethic is amazing!
I remember many years ago when i lived in New Zealand, and I used to go to the tip (dump), it was like it qas in a open paddock, and yoh rocked up paid about $1.00, but you were unloading beside rotten food etc, it was a place I was glad to get out of, then the council startec building nice 'clean' transfer stations, oh our life changed, looking for more of your videos, bedt regards from Australia, Les
If a penny is heads up, pick it up and you'll have good luck. If it's heads down flip it over and leave it for someone else, and you'll both have good luck.
Also, find out if the fabric dumpsters are a thing in your area. They are wonderful, we used one for a bathroom demo and it was $100 to buy it at Lowes, then pick up was free, we just had to call and sanitation picked it up. Worked great.
I'm looking forward to the next video. Do take care, be careful. My husband and I have totally remodeled our first apartment with the landlord's blessing (20 years ago) then built our second apartment in a friend's barn loft at their invitation (14 years ago). My husband is a self employed handyman, does everything but roofing. I helped do all kinds of stuff with the two apartments. So I can appreciate what you are doing. I wish we were in a financial position to buy some unique structure and revive it and make it into an interesting home. But I'm 72 now and my younger husband is 55. I'm not able to help now even if we had funds for a project, hurt my back real bad recently and not getting better even with PT, chiropractor and massage therapy. Takes me days to clean our small apartment now and some things I can't do by myself anymore. That's why I have concern for you.😊 Anyway I'm going to enjoy watching you transform this great old building.❤😊
Gaffney SC (Upstate near Spartanburg) used to be the Peach Capital but it got too cool up there and the temp gradient moved to the south. I appraised that land fill and police department years ago. Jim in Chile.
WOW, that is some beautiful countryside! Every little bit will be worth it in the end. If you need some inspiration, I've been following Modustrial Maker and he just finished a 4 year renovation project of a warehouse in Chicago. Your project also feels as wholesome. I'm really looking forward to the progress!!!
Why wouldn't you just get a roll off? I know they're more expensive than $38/ton (plus gas) but you're saving time and physical effort. Those two things are priceless IMO. Very cool about the people there! So nice they didn't charge you. Either way, thanks again for taking us on this journey!
I think you are mistaken about those peach orchards. Don't you know that peaches come from a can, they were put there by a man, in the factory downtown?
When you stand back, it looks to some that maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. But, I think, like you, that it was a good idea. Let's face it, it is always hard at first. Cleaning up and such. It will get better and you are going to enjoy your new endeavor a lot. Is it going to be frustrating at times, Sure, but you are going to have such fulfilment along the way. And look at that town, it is awesome. Good for you and the misses for taking the risk. I'm going to watch every video you post until you two finish. I'm betting on you.
Greetings from nearby Augusta. Drive by your bank every year on the way to the Christmas Tree farm. If you think those peach trees are cool now wait til next spring when they bloom. Breathtaking! So glad ya'll are here. I look forward to seeing your progress!
Wow - lots of trash, but to be expected with an old abandoned building. It's really cool they're not charging you for dumping, guess they like the idea of the bank building being restored and someone showing it some love & attention. Good job!
Don't know your $ situation, but if you can, you might consider that school is out for the summer and teens are looking for work. You might find a young strong back or two to help with cleaning, loading trash for the dump, wiggling behind stairs to pick up debris, etc. Something tween/teen boys would be great at and they'd love some extra coin, not to mention a trip to the transfer station! 😉
As you were loading the trailer, I was like all right here comes the Time-lapse and as soon as I thought it boom it started very cool brother man very cool like to see the progress
Thanks so much for the frequent updates. I love watching abandoned buildings turned into homes and your the only channel who updates alot which I love you got a life time subscriber from me!
For the brick walls-to save on work and if you agree, obviously; something you can do is to leave the plaster over the bricks that are too damaged. Remove as much as possible or as muxh as you want and Carefully cut the plaster to match the brickwork and then paint the plaster as if it is outdoor scenery...with the brick work looking like you are looking out from inside the ruins of an old building. This may not be doable though if there is lead in the plaster/paint so...yeah lol..and the pipes...o wow. They would so good exposed-you can make them look copper or anything once done installing, should you choose for that type of look. I am just so excited to see this building hahaha sorry
Looking forward to watching you on this adventure. I don't lift heavy concrete, go to the dump, or work on sewer lines, but I'll cheer you on and subscribe as you go down the road. (It makes my troubles seem small 😅)
