- The relationship between New Zealand and Samoa is very complex. The pages of our histories are intertwined and blotted with black marks right next to NZ's name.
On the 7th November 1918, the NZ military administration controlling Samoa, led by Col. Robert Logan, made the deadly decision to knowingly allow a ship called the Talune carrying Spanish Influenza to dock in Apia Harbour.
The results were catastrophic, wiping out over a quarter of Samoas population and decimating entire families and villages in what is one of the worst cultural catastrophes in history.

My grandfather told me this story many times. Born in 1894 in Satupaitea Savaii and passed away in 2002 at 108 years old. Asiata Asiata was his name.

Every time I hear this story it burns, and I think it hurts more the older I get. My great-grandfather was a huge supporter of the Mau. As a result, he was thrown in jail and stripped of his title. Til this day, my great-grandfather's title has not made its round back to our family clan yet, as we are currently the next clan in its rotation. Had the Mau happened a century sooner, it would not have been the Mau Movement known today, which was a peaceful protest. Instead, it would have been a brutal slaughter of every New Zealander on site, because our forefather's at that time would have annihilated any white person with the slightest scent of disrespect. The Word of the LORD saved the lives of those New Zealanders, because Tupua Tamasese LealofiOA'ana had become a God-fearing Christian by then and promoted peace, as the assassination of Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III occurred 99 years after John Williams brought Christianity to Samoa. As painful as it is for me to re-hear this, especially told by different and other Samoan brothers and sisters, it is extremely important that we do not forget the pain, horror, and ultimate sacrifice our people made and were subjected to. This made me emotional. My great-grandfather was killed by the influenza. My grandfather was just a toddler and he was one of nine and my heart breaks for my pa and his siblings losing their dad so young. He passed a few days shy of his 46th birthday.

I was aware of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic in 1918, but was completely unaware of it hitting Samoa. Thank you for shedding light on the history.

We found a bone while digging for my grandfather's grave named Saivaega Meleisea in the village in Poutasi Falealili. We believe it's one of those who died by this disease. Even some of the man admitted they found three bones while they were building our pastor's house before the tsunami. But don't worry we cleaned them, oiled it with coconut oil, warp it with a siapo and buried them. Thank God we weren't cursed 😅. But the sad part is we never knew who's bones they belong to 🙁.
My Grandmother told us about this Deadly flu her only brother died from this my Grandmother and her sister survive this killer decease , New Zealand should compensate Samoan people

I still remember this History how Honorable Tui Atua tupua tamsese lealofi started the Mau Movement which is the Samoa Mo Samoa movement after this period of horror 😭😭 and then he was killed by the NZ police after a peaceful protest, RIP to all those whose lives were lost by the Spanish influenza in 1918... 🇼🇸🌴🇦🇸💙❤😢 love you Samoa..

My grandmother was 6 years old when the influenza arrived in Samoa. She was grew up in Vailele, Samoa and she remembered watching an older man that dropped dead whilst walking he was sick with the influenza. She also lost relatives cousins, uncles & aunties. She passed away in 2010 aged 98 years old. Love hearing the stories of our elders ❤️✊🏽🇼🇸🇼🇸🇼🇸🇼🇸🇼🇸

really love history documentaries especially ones about our people and all the struggles there was, i know tonga was hit with alot of diseases, my grandma's lost 4 older sibiling my great grandpa lost 7 sibilings by the flu 1918, siaosi tonga tau 'ataina have song written for that year, but the story about this year that made me cry was about my great great grandpa sione said to all of his family "dont worry i will die and only me" and he was the only one who died that year out of my moms dad family, my mom says just like you guys every families just put their dead in the back of a horse carriage and was burried in many mass burials too, very sad part of our family history and of our peoples history in general ofa atu to all and stay safe

This almost led to American Samoa getting infected too. Thankfully Governor Clark, the American Officer in charge at the time, flat out refused any outside traffic, including from New Zealand, even going so far as to personally deny Col. Logan passage. It soured relations between the U.S. and New Zealand for nearly 4 decades but it meant American Samoa was one of only a handful of places in the world to stay safe during the Spanish Flu.
Oh and Col. Logan was apparently massively insulted that the quarantine applied to "proper" (white) people.
Sometimes these things happen in life for us all to understand eachother, that's how world become closer, we learn from the past and then we all end up loving eachother
