Untold Pacific History: Episode 3 - Samoa / NZ's colonisation of Samoa & the Mau Movement

  • ‘The Mau’ became a revolutionary movement for Samoa’s independence, against New Zealand’s brutal period of colonial administration. In what is possibly one of the most significant stories of New Zealand’s little-known history in the region, this episode looks at the events that led to the rise of the ‘Mau’ resistance movement and the fatal consequences of New Zealand’s rule in Samoa.
New Zealand’s period of rule in Samoa was marred by bungled administration and fatal decision-making. The death of one fifth of the population via Spanish influenza, and the fatal shooting of unarmed Samoans by NZ police during a peaceful public march are two key events.
This piece sheds light on this period of New Zealand and Samoan history that remains little-examined in Aotearoa. Former Head of State, Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese, the nephew of the slain Mau leader, tells of his tumultuous family history under the NZ reign and how it led to Helen Clark’s famous 2002 apology on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
Made possible by the RNZ / NZ on Air Innovation fund

I watch this series and am ashamed to be classed New Zealander. I am MAORI and had never really thought about it when I'm filling out legal forms....Question: What country do you come from. The only answer on the form applicable to my situation is "NEW ZEALAND' That is the name given to our land by the CROWN. When I hear reference to the fact that New Zealand instigated these cruelties, I am saddened that by a legal form, I could be considered as part of this pompous society. Just like other Polynesian - we Maori have also lived through this stupidity. I am so blessed that I have mokopuna that have Samoan, Nuie and Tongan blood. My parents were of the generation who were caned if they spoke their language at school. They refrained from speaking the language around us, so that we would be spared the rod. As a result of that, I reinforced that by not allowing my children to study anything Maori. I evidenced the age where Maori were the lesser.
But Woooooooohooooo. Now....Everything POLYNESIAN is the flava
I am 65 and totally proud to be a POLYNESIAN!!!!!
The hope is that we take heed of the dying words of this Mau Leader - PRICELESS

It was bad enough that our Māori people had been reduced to almost decimation but then to hear that is extended to Samoa broke my heart. I have a photo in the Māori village PCC with Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Afi after he spoke and told all the guests how his father taught him about Maui Pomare and Apirana Ngata, who as political leaders in NZ supported the Mau and plead their case to free Samoa, who he was thankful for and our blood connection as Polyneisans. Tonga was under the Protection of British, it was supposed to be America, but Tonga asked Britain to protect them, that is why Tonga did not go through this, and also Tonga has sovereignty. Samoans were not gonna let palagis telling them how to live and behave in its own country.

That was because the King of Tonga asked the British as a Protectorate of Tonga. That is why you still have a Kingdom. we didn't want foreign rulers hence this. our ancestors fought Samoa mo Samoa . We got our independence as first island to do so. All the blood spilt sadly to gain independence from foreign ruling. We almost again lost to China due to greed by one government who forgot how we became Samoa Mo Samoa, the young n Educated Samoans from all around the world united to rid off a horrible government who lost its way and put current party in that believed in our values and our past history, that we must fight on. Samoa Mo Samoa won🇼🇸

I knew Maori and Samoa, had a connection, it was Pomare that stood up for our Samoa people, it was the British from New Zealand who introduced wars, violence and sickness, from Samoa perspective we depend on God for everything we do, now I know why us Samoans and Maori have a similarities in our cultures we pray 🙏 before our day starts and put God before everything, wish this was taught in schools, it's sad that it's not, this is why from historical issues Samoa/Maori stand together as one RIP to Tupua Tamaseae Samoa MO Samoa xo

I'm sorry dude, but this idea that there was no war or violence in Samoa, before New Zealand turned up is straight up nonsense, Samoa and Tonga had warred with each other long before the first Europeans visited the Pacific, not to mention all the internal tribal conflict, look up the Tu'i Tonga Empire and you'll know what I mean

What a significant time in Samoa. Like everywhere in the world, TRUE HISTORY is being omitted from books and educational institutions. It is up to us as individuals and our families, to tell these truths to our children and to their children so the truth of our Samoan people and our culture will be known for all generations.
As a proud Samoan woman, my head is held high in knowing that our people maintained dignity and honour in the presence of immense injustice. I am proud to know our people were peaceful even though they had every right to kill the invaders.
May every generation know and uphold the truth. We can only defeat the enemy with truth, peace and justice.
    God bless Samoa

I wasn’t born in the time but when l was born 1952 grow up in my beautiful village Vaiala. Apia so beautiful village beaches. In that time samoa was under NZ not a rich country but people live happy and healthy. I remembered German was in samoa in my young age even pisikoa from America. I have a aunt have a son to a German she passed away her only German Samoan son live with his family in NZ for the rest of his life. his name Maleola Moyer Poasa his German dad. New Zealand was Samoan home country. It’s all different now. Samoa history was much better now even though we grow up those years. I thanks for our latest PM Governor to keep samoa safe and healthy And now samoa are multicultural country.

I keep have mixed feelings every time I watch this. Angry of what was done to our people, and humble because of the courage of the leaders of the Mau movement whom their followers trusted and follow them and were loyal to the movement after the death of their beloved leader. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth". Our island home did raised up men and women of integrity, and great resolve. "Samoa, Tula'i, ma sisi ia lau fu'a, o lou pale lea". The first phrase of their national anthem, a reminder of the struggles the earlier pioneers of Samoa freedom fighters whoso Mau stripe of their ie lavalavas were torn off when they're caught wearing them. This DID NOT watered down the determined warrior men and women who yearn to breath and live according to the dictates of their conscience. They embrace Christianity and did what they can to live in peace among with their large families in all the Samoan islands. Thanks for posting.

Creating oppitunities to expand their powers globally by buying up countries and their resources..yes they are a threat but they are using money to test countries that will sell their soul for money .. I blame the greed and
Power hungry leaders who sold their souls and our people to money just so they can feel like gods and sit in luxury..

Lou ta nu'u is the name of the song. Its like the Sāmoan anthem, often sung in churches, events etc. The song reminds Sāmoans to hold on to their cultural inheritance/identity, their pride and dignity.
      1st verse:
Lo ta nu’u, ua ou fanau ai (My dear country, where I was born)
Lalelei oe i, le vasa (you are the most beautiful in the ocean)
Ua e maua, mai lugā (You have obtained from above)
O le tofi, aoga (A most important inheritance / duty)
