Untold Pacific History: Episode 3 - Samoa / NZ's colonisation of Samoa & the Mau Movement
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 июн 2021
- ‘The Mau’ became a revolutionary movement for Samoa’s independence, against New Zealand’s brutal period of colonial administration. In what is possibly one of the most significant stories of New Zealand’s little-known history in the region, this episode looks at the events that led to the rise of the ‘Mau’ resistance movement and the fatal consequences of New Zealand’s rule in Samoa.
New Zealand’s period of rule in Samoa was marred by bungled administration and fatal decision-making. The death of one fifth of the population via Spanish influenza, and the fatal shooting of unarmed Samoans by NZ police during a peaceful public march are two key events.
This piece sheds light on this period of New Zealand and Samoan history that remains little-examined in Aotearoa. Former Head of State, Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese, the nephew of the slain Mau leader, tells of his tumultuous family history under the NZ reign and how it led to Helen Clark’s famous 2002 apology on behalf of the New Zealand Government.

I wish a director picked this story up and made a beautiful movie out of it. It's my favorite revolution story

Rob a Bank= ARRESTED
Rob a Country= ITS ALL GOOD
World would be ok if people stayed in their own countries.
So beautiful everything they fought for and now we have a prime minister who won’t step down and is ruining everything that all our ancestors have fought for.
I personally don't know the man. Judging from what i have seen through interviews and regular social media appearance the guy is a complete douche bag.
Are you naive? NZ was working in the shadows to depose of Tuila'epa Lupesoliai Sa'ilele Malielegaoi because he's good pals with China? And yet NZ is having a cosy relationship with China!? Oh it's because Australia, America's white sherrif in the pacific and SE Asia, doesn't like it so NZ has to play along.
People just need to get together and over throw corruption we are complicating such simple matters with bullshit westernised thinking.
And even our police are corrupt they can't do nothing about it. Tuilaepa has them in his hands he should be arrested.
Tuilaepa is a Ufa and needs to be kefed up lols
Joey thanks for sharing this. No human being has the right to exert control over another. The Samoan people are to be commended for their non violent acts. It shows forth such bravery. It is said, If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything. As Bob Marley would say, Get up, stand up. Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up. Don't give up the fight 🎶 Congtratulations!!! to your culture for regaining their independence back in 1962 👏 May we always be reminded to remember those whom laid down their lives, that we may be free. May we always remember the sacrifices of our ancestors. 🙏🏿
Thank you so much Mary! You are awesome! I really appreciate your vibes!! Much Alofa to you!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽
While our Tangata Maori continue to fight the good fight and still being told it was a good thing we were colonized but still we will march we will reclaim our language, we will fight for every scrap of land we have left. Your faith in God and strong family values has served you well, god bless
@@mnate3538I see one of your own Maori king had stood beside a Samoan brother in support & speak up against the injustices NZ palagi authorities inflicted on Samoan people. I've always considered Maori as our sisters and brothers. We're all pasefika people & of Polynesian race.
At least Samoa get free from NZ, but America Samoa still under US. America Samoa will never become independent country its will be like Hawaii, Guam, North Mariana Island, French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna.

I watch this series and am ashamed to be classed New Zealander. I am MAORI and had never really thought about it when I'm filling out legal forms....Question: What country do you come from. The only answer on the form applicable to my situation is "NEW ZEALAND' That is the name given to our land by the CROWN. When I hear reference to the fact that New Zealand instigated these cruelties, I am saddened that by a legal form, I could be considered as part of this pompous society. Just like other Polynesian - we Maori have also lived through this stupidity. I am so blessed that I have mokopuna that have Samoan, Nuie and Tongan blood. My parents were of the generation who were caned if they spoke their language at school. They refrained from speaking the language around us, so that we would be spared the rod. As a result of that, I reinforced that by not allowing my children to study anything Maori. I evidenced the age where Maori were the lesser.
But Woooooooohooooo. Now....Everything POLYNESIAN is the flava
I am 65 and totally proud to be a POLYNESIAN!!!!!
The hope is that we take heed of the dying words of this Mau Leader - PRICELESS

Why was this not taught in school!! Share this story through NZ
Coz it’s embarrassing for nz maybe

"SAMOA MO SAMOA"
WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG TO APOLOGISE TO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WE THE MAORI OF NZ ARE STILL WAITING FOR OURS ???
Any apology from a politician is meaningless and hollow anyway.
An apology from the government would mean compensation. The NZ Gov, is struggling to pay china, how could they pay everyone else?
The CROWN is a VERY DISHONEST ORGANIZATION, CRUEL KILLERS
Maybe I think apologizing is acknowledging and then reparations must be made. They want to avoid this I think. I'm just saying what I think but really I don't know shit.
@Frieda Toma I mean they are owning up for their mistakes from the pass years. Not to mention this was one man faults so all punishments should fall on him not all the palagi.
Samoa have a great debt of gratitude to Maori leadership under Maori MP Sir Maui Pomare. Samoans in New Zealand and afar MUST remember that legacy and support Maori Soveriegnty.
Importantly Samoan women took the baton of resistance when the men of Mau were hunted.
You are right ..my people are not educated about some of these issues regarding colonialism in regards to Aotearoa and other countries like Australia and America .. some of my people are oblivious and lack the understanding of colonialsm because history of the world is not taught in Samoa nor is it of great importance to be taught and it needs to change ..
Love these Polynesia stories, keep them coming...very informative and enjoying any related to old time Polynesian stories!!
Kalofa e,May he rest in peace. These people should never be trusted because its still around.our ancestors did a lot for our generations

Formal apology is Not enough with regards to what the Samoans went through ...colonialism doesn't sit well with my soul. Poor New Zealand were populated with Criminals, prisoners from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. God bless Samoa that they may always be people of peace which brings war and violent to an end.
So sad - finally learnt about what New Zealand did to Samoa. I wish it had not happened that way but I cant change the past but learn from it. Peace is what the Samoan leader wanted after all Samoans had been ruling their own country for thousands of years so what right did NZ have. I cant change who I am a white man from New Zealand but I love the Samoan people who very friendly though I am bias because I married one. Cant wait to go back there at the end of this year. God bless you all.
Yah is getting his wrath, when that volcano came in 2019 etc... that was YAH revenge on what they did to his people

Sir Maui Pomare, moe mai ra e te Rangatira. Samoa mo Samoa!
In this story is so touching, remember the life of our Samoan ,We want our country to look forward to claim the Tupua blood..keep in our hearts ..
I never heard this once growing up in NZ, it wasn't until I went to BYUH in a Pacific Island Studies class and heard about this shameful history at age 25. It was bad enough that our Māori people had been reduced to almost decimation but then to hear that is extended to Samoa broke my heart. I have a photo in the Māori village PCC with Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Afi after he spoke and told all the guests how his father taught him about Maui Pomare and Apirana Ngata, who as political leaders in NZ supported the Mau and plead their case to free Samoa, who he was thankful for and our blood connection as Polyneisans. Samoa Mo Samoa!
How can you go to someone’s home and banish them from it? Smh

I am proud of the Samoan and the resilience of the MAU movement of Samoa people.
Those were the bad days.these evil people ruined things for Samoa.
I am so grateful as a Tongan that we never had to submit to a foreign ruler. But I cannot help but sympathize with my neighboring brothers and sisters to the North for what they had to endure. Shame on you NZ apology or not… Shame on you…
Tonga were lucky because no superpowers wanted to take over them.
Tonga was under the Protection of British, it was supposed to be America, but Tonga asked Britain to protect them, that is why Tonga did not go through this, and also Tonga has sovereignty. Samoans were not gonna let palagis telling them how to live and behave in its own country.
@@moekontze116 samoans didnt have a king aswell someone that can just answer the palangis for them instead all of them had different ideas and the palangis just colonized the whole country
That was because the King of Tonga asked the British as a Protectorate of Tonga. That is why you still have a Kingdom. we didn't want foreign rulers hence this. our ancestors fought Samoa mo Samoa . We got our independence as first island to do so. All the blood spilt sadly to gain independence from foreign ruling. We almost again lost to China due to greed by one government who forgot how we became Samoa Mo Samoa, the young n Educated Samoans from all around the world united to rid off a horrible government who lost its way and put current party in that believed in our values and our past history, that we must fight on. Samoa Mo Samoa won🇼🇸
Clearly someone never heard of the Tu'i Tonga Empire and how they conquered Samoa
HRPP Keke ai kou fela.Aua le ola faatautala e le faigofie suega malo.
I knew Maori and Samoa, had a connection, it was Pomare that stood up for our Samoa people, it was the British from New Zealand who introduced wars, violence and sickness, from Samoa perspective we depend on God for everything we do, now I know why us Samoans and Maori have a similarities in our cultures we pray 🙏 before our day starts and put God before everything, wish this was taught in schools, it's sad that it's not, this is why from historical issues Samoa/Maori stand together as one RIP to Tupua Tamaseae Samoa MO Samoa xo
I'm sorry dude, but this idea that there was no war or violence in Samoa, before New Zealand turned up is straight up nonsense, Samoa and Tonga had warred with each other long before the first Europeans visited the Pacific, not to mention all the internal tribal conflict, look up the Tu'i Tonga Empire and you'll know what I mean
Thank you for this wonderful Documentary🥺. I love you Samoa
All our Samoan songs are sung, story telling all that happened. If you just listen to the words, our songs tell the stories of our people, our forefathers and all our ancestors before us. #samoamosamoa
that is why us children should always be grateful to our parents, grandparents, greatgrandparents and to our ancestors that lived through those hard times, fought for survival and fought for their land thinking of us their future generations in hopes that we will be free and wont have to go through what they had to go through in their life.Fa'afetai atu i o'u pele mo le mefaufau pea ia i matou a o outou tau mo le saolotoga ma le filemu i lo matou motu
What a significant time in Samoa. Like everywhere in the world, TRUE HISTORY is being omitted from books and educational institutions. It is up to us as individuals and our families, to tell these truths to our children and to their children so the truth of our Samoan people and our culture will be known for all generations.
As a proud Samoan woman, my head is held high in knowing that our people maintained dignity and honour in the presence of immense injustice. I am proud to know our people were peaceful even though they had every right to kill the invaders.
May every generation know and uphold the truth. We can only defeat the enemy with truth, peace and justice.
God bless Samoa

I wasn’t born in the time but when l was born 1952 grow up in my beautiful village Vaiala. Apia so beautiful village beaches. In that time samoa was under NZ not a rich country but people live happy and healthy. I remembered German was in samoa in my young age even pisikoa from America. I have a aunt have a son to a German she passed away her only German Samoan son live with his family in NZ for the rest of his life. his name Maleola Moyer Poasa his German dad. New Zealand was Samoan home country. It’s all different now. Samoa history was much better now even though we grow up those years. I thanks for our latest PM Governor to keep samoa safe and healthy And now samoa are multicultural country.
Does anyone know the song at the end?
New Zealand must atone for our colonial sins
Just the palagis of New Zealand ..
Kids should learning this at school
I keep have mixed feelings every time I watch this. Angry of what was done to our people, and humble because of the courage of the leaders of the Mau movement whom their followers trusted and follow them and were loyal to the movement after the death of their beloved leader. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth". Our island home did raised up men and women of integrity, and great resolve. "Samoa, Tula'i, ma sisi ia lau fu'a, o lou pale lea". The first phrase of their national anthem, a reminder of the struggles the earlier pioneers of Samoa freedom fighters whoso Mau stripe of their ie lavalavas were torn off when they're caught wearing them. This DID NOT watered down the determined warrior men and women who yearn to breath and live according to the dictates of their conscience. They embrace Christianity and did what they can to live in peace among with their large families in all the Samoan islands. Thanks for posting.

Song ? 18:14
Lou ta nu'u is the name of the song. Its like the Sāmoan anthem, often sung in churches, events etc. The song reminds Sāmoans to hold on to their cultural inheritance/identity, their pride and dignity.
1st verse:
Lo ta nu’u, ua ou fanau ai (My dear country, where I was born)
Lalelei oe i, le vasa (you are the most beautiful in the ocean)
Ua e maua, mai lugā (You have obtained from above)
O le tofi, aoga (A most important inheritance / duty)

New Zealand are British. It wasn't us Maori that's for sure
Big countries and superpowers always came to Samoa in the past because they knew the people and Samoa was so valuable... And Samoa still stands independently and never been conquered by a foreign ruler.
