I've watched many of Antonelli's videos on turning the knob multiple times & I just realized he said something I taught my son when he was a little guy (my son is now playing 13u ball). At 6:05 Matt says "A to B'. When my son was learning I used to tell him that over and over so his swing wasn't long. He's had to unlearn it! I never realized I was taught as a kid to swing A to B and push the barrel. Listen to Antonelli! Love these drill videos by the way ...
I think Tony Gwynn was describing lag (barrel chasing a source of energy) when he talked about knob direction. I think the Camwood bat he endorsed makes this clear. What you are describing as the proper movement, in my opinion, is a push. "Turn the knob up" and the barrel goes backward. While the differences visually are quite different (turn the knob up vs The classic push) they both create a see-saw effect in terms of energy for the barrel which is the opposite of lag, and will promote front side dominance in a lot of young hitters learning the game. This idea with a player that has been told to throw their top hand over the bottom hand to chop wood, could help as an exaggeration. However, I would estimate 90% of kids learning the game lose the barrel behind them which kicks in the drag instinct and ultimately throws the front side into overdrive to get the barrel to catch up. I love that you are shifting away from the idea of turning barrels and are getting players to focus on the feeling at the hands that most kids do not understand. Tony Gwynn would be proud. Merry Christmas sir!
I've never understood what "turning the barrel" meant until you explained it. I'm convinced the dowel rod or PVC might be one of the best "feel" hitting tools I've used. The instant feedback can't be beat. Thanks for everything you do.
Coach Been taking in your vids for 1 year now. Love your stuff w coiling, posture, turning the knob SLIGHTLY UP but exaggerate the feel in a DRILL. PRECIATE CHU
Be careful Jeff Frey #Shegone hates this 😂 😂. Matt I love this and its absolutely correct. I do very similar drills and use the heavy bag often. Great job. I wish there was not so many haters on hitting Twitter and online. I wish more coaches would open their minds to what really happens in the biomechanics of the swing with really high level hitters.
Don't drop your hands to your waist before you swing and bend over a bit in a more athletic position. If you do this, your swing will come more from your loaded position near your armpit level, and your shoulder turn will make you more on plane with the pitch and up through the zone from back to front.
Thanks once again for another video to explain the hardest skill to master in any sport. I just look forward and spreading your videos to my team and all kids. Big big kudos for your passion in teaching the next generation of baseball players.
Yeah it's better to snap the bat from your shoulder.Arms are the enemy like they say ,because if you start using your arms to snap the barrel you end up putting strain on your shoulder which eventually messes up your shoulder.
I believe Tony says knob TO the ball and doesn't agree with the "launch angle" philosophy... Edit: Found it. ruclips.net/video/tsZGog9xn5Y/видео.html starts 5:30. Discuss please.

Spring season starts in about a month. Definitely need this
What an honor to meet Tony Gwynn. Blessed you are Matt . Merry Christmas my favorite RUclips coach and you're probably just a few years younger than I

I asked this on another video. What brand is the standing punching bag being used?

Thanks for the info! I really enjoy your channel!
Hey Matt, when you're using the insider bat where do you pre-set the angle of the flat surface towards?
Wish I knew this back in the day. Probably would have helped my little league batting average jump up from .030 to .230 overnight.
Great video Matt. Any other way to do this without the bag you have there?
Thanks so much Matt! Always great to learn from the best and incorporate these skills into my game!
Thanks Matt! I’ve been struggling with not swinging up and uppercutting. Great video!👍
Nathanael Schraeder same bro

Thanks for making this so easy to understand and implement into my routine, great video!
"Get the knob up before it goes out." Applies to non-baseball scenarios too!
Great channel btw.

Great channel coach,I just followed Juan cero also great antonelli baseball content
I think if the Rockies Matt Antonelli did this he would swing and the bat would slice right through the bag
Great drill. Love this channel
This video will seriously trigger all the Little League hitting coaches whose only advice is to “swing down on the ball!” 😂😂😂
great video! remember me? you gave me a shoutout during the world seiries
How long of PVC woukd you recommemd for younger kids to use for these pvc drills?
I use one that is at least a foot longer than normal bat
Excelente me dará muy buen resultado
What is the video with the pvc pipe called?
Any tips would be appreciated
I wish you were in Florida
How many Reps for each drill? Thanks

Hey Matt how tall are you ?
Therefore finishing up through the bottom half of the ball.... don’t make contact too low on the ball or towards the top of the ball.... good luck🤣
Adjust your pci 😜

Edit: Found it.

He really thinks he knows more than Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, chipper Jones ???
What do you mean? Barry Bonds has the same rock back and same knob up that Antonelli talks about.
Knob up?!? Swing level..... let your body provide the tilt/angle through the ball...trust me on this one....
This guy knows nothing about hitting
