This is the single best hitting advice I've ever found on youtube. Excellent demonstration and explanation. Superb job.
Thanks Kevin!!
Solid video. I wish we could hear what you were saying to this kid during the session, to know how it was all explained in a way the player could easily understand and absorb it. I find that to be the hardest part of coaching. What's in my head may translate to something different in the players head, or they may not understand me at all.
Oh this was perfect. My son is doing the exact same thing with his lead arm. Now I can really show him what he's doing and what needs to change. Another great vid, Matt!
My son is just now developing this long swing and never did it before (9yr old) thanks for the video, always great info no matter how long ago you posted
There's so many RUclips hitting instructors out there - but I like your instructions and have successfully implemented them last summer - with great results! It's very similar the The Hitting Vault - and somewhat dare I say it, to TeacherMan's but all in slightly different terms. There is one RUclipsr who I checked out called, TheSwingMechanic who teaches the arm-bar on the left video - He builds his philosophy off Griffey Jr's swing and calls it front arm compression against the chest... I've pretty much rejected his style although I'll get into a cage soon and try different things. It's all so confusing - but I still like your methods, Matt! I'll keep watching :)
Thank you and good luck!!!
I sure wish the coaches had today’s technology. As a major fan and once player. And now a Dad, who’s sons playing the best game ever “Baseball” I’ve watched many videos on how to help him. Respectfully yours is Definitely amazing I’ve been working on his muscle memory and many hours of hitting off a T and soft tossing to him. And he’s going to watch this video like 👍🏻 I just did so he can see how important bat speed is. As he’s already learning the pictures are getting faster, thus the time to swing is Definitely a lot shorter and anyone who’s ever played. This video shows just how little time a batter has to swing and I Truly appreciate seeing and listening to what you’ve said. Thanks for sharing this with us, The Suit3
@08:55 That is like Teachermanhitting with that one legged snap. I noticed this a bit with the kid too. My kids have the same issue with that right elbow going more forward and taking that longer path. It's much better now, but as the velo goes up, can't sit on it as long now. The timestamp I show is exactly how I got him to realize it. One legged forces you to get there. Once you get there, then it's a matter of practice on that shoulder tilt (Most coaches yell, fast hands, knob to the ball, stop dipping shoulder - all nonsense!) and then that snap and swing, which is as you show here everything all at once coiled, stretched and explode.
This is awesome! Makes complete sense to me and (most importantly my 9 year-old). Please keep the lessons coming. Thanks for all your help!
My son was doing the exact same thing a year ago. Great video and explanation!! Video is so essential for them to see and correct mistakes
This is a great example of what we typically see when working for the first time with younger players.
Steve Terry, Peterborough
True!
Thank you Mike for paying it forward. God bless you. By the way your boy is amazing at his age. I'm sure that brings you many smiles. Keep up the good work
Thanks!!
Thanks very much for your help. Amazing difference in just 1 hour.
Brilliant video. Love the philosophy! Keep it up, sir!
Great way to communicate the swing.
Outstanding work, coach.
Thank you Coach! Great information!
I did this with my son And he is making solid contact now. Thanks
Matt I am forwarding the link to youth and high school coaches in our community. A Major problem hitting instruction is the cue "take the hands to the ball". This cue leads
to major swing problems when the hitter graduates to a 90' diamond. Have you ever done a video on the most critical misinterpreted cues used by hitting instructors?
Thanks for what you do for baseball and softball.
Good advice Matt, Thank you
Hey. Just wondering what app your using to analyze the swings? Thanks
Great stuff! Thank you.
Matt I’m gonna need you to come down to North Georgia because this is exactly what my son struggles with
Great advice easy to understand instructions!!
Great stuff like always!!! I was working with a kid last wk doing this Something and an hr in the cage together the wkend game he did great, thank you again for sharing great info….
Wow. I’ve recorded many videos of my son, so it didn’t take me very long to recognize that he does the exact same thing with his arms as the video on the left.
Hey Matt! Hi from Vancouver Canada! I'm working with my little guy almost every day and we're having a great time. He's too young to really explain this to, but do you have some quick terms you might use like "knob to the ball" or something like that, that would be just simple things I could call out that would reinforce some good fundamentals around bat quickness?
My son has this exact issue with his leading arm straightening. I love the idea of using a pvc pipe and I’ll try that to see if he can get his hands to the ball quicker. How long of a pipe did you use? Great video! Thank you!
I looked into it and what I’ve found, is 5’X1/4”
This is invaluable
Good change and assessment! Trigger looks much better! I guess you don't do much plumbing😂.. Thanks for the content!
I liked his swing on the right but with his bat coiled like that it's still going to make him late on every pitch that is thrown at him. What I was taught was don't try and coil your bat but the swing on the left he did have a long swing and all he would do is pop pitches up. But your right he should have a short compact swing but again in some of your videos he needs to be on time and my highschool put it this way. If your facing a boxer and he is going to hit you. Is he going to hit you with an upper cut or is he going to hit you with a straight punch? So basically the pitcher and the batter is the boxer and who's going to hit first so with your bat have a short compact swing. Do this drill take your fist but don't try to hit anyone but stay balanced then see how much force it is that way than trying to hit them with an upper cut
Can you please post the PVC pipe drill you mention? Thanks!
My son does the exact same thing as the before video. I need this to help him fix that swing.
Enjoy the vids. For the younger guys, would it make sense to focus more on lower body mechanics than upper? With that upper body coil in the vid (the shoulder turned in) the batter will usually create tension in the shoulders. This tension usually translates into a focus to upper body energy. For example, this talented young batter appears to give an emphasis on upper body tension which, upon trigger, has a tendency to release upper body energy flow. The result is an upper body pull - which is symptomatic of weak lower body, ie, hips open too early in the swing. In any event, while there is a lot to focus on, I am partial to developing lower body mechanics first because if taught correctly, the upper body movement in response to the clockwork of the hips is better positioned to release energy efficiently with a direct and powerful path to the ball. The first move toward the ball is crucial: like the foundation upon which the house is built. For younger guys: Hips and shoulders square when front foot plants.
No. It's the opposite. Teach the kids how to swing the bat. You're overcomplicating and using words that frankly don't have a lot of meaning.
Tension and energy flow? Be concrete. Try: using absolutely zero jargon. The younger the player the more harmful (not just useless but damaging) meaningless words are. They confuse everybody involved.
Instead, "don't straighten your arm" is crystal clear. So is hitting line drives instead of foul pops.
Respectfully,
@@irtnyc I used words to communicate my thoughts on RUclips - not to a 9-year old. That being said, I agree with you that communication should be tailored to your audience. I stand by the point of my comment: ground up is key no matter how you want to teach it. A pull swing works for a select few who have special timing: Bonds, Judge …
1st !! Woo Hoo!!!!!! Happy Holidays Matt. Looking forward to your future videos.
Thanks you too!
good stuff sir thanks!
Love the videos, the stories, content ect.
Glad you like them!
Pure gold
My 10 year old son has the same flaw in his swing. I also found that it causes him to step away from the plate when the pitch is one the inside half. Bat path starts outside so the feet try to compensate to avoid getting jammed on the hands. Another symptom is he hits a lot of balls off the end of the bat.
Great advice! Thank you for the info!
You are welcome!!
Is the proper swing also about extending that front arm later? Will that help with a quicker compact swing? I tell my players that bat speed is important (they are 6-9 year olds.) I can see how the swing on the right is more compact, and how the swing on the left has his back elbow moving forward too soon. (Dropping it.) Am I right in this? I'm trying to compare both to see which is the proper thing to look at.
Matt, love the vids but i dont get it?
You say its a quicker shorter swing. However, every point in the video where you run back and forth through the frames. The "old form" bat is ahead of the "new form"
To me this mean his old swing was faster. So not only is it faster but it's longer. Which means every point on the barrell is moving faster than in the fixed video.
As far as i can see the only thing you made him do was bend his left arm and become a bit of (slight) bat wrapper.
You briefly pause video at 8:04. If you look frame for frame...
1. the old swing is into the zone ahead of the new swing.
2. The blur on the barrell is slightly wider on old than new. Bigger blur means its going faster.
Love the channel, respect the videos...but dont follow this one???
Great golf swing
⛳️
What software are you using to have both swings side by side
best teachng video
My 10-year-old boy swings exactly like the boy before your instruction. He's late on everything but has good hand eye coordination and can still hit . I'm trying to change his swing but he hasn't bought in entirely yet.
I wish him luck!!
Good stuff, Matt. What software do you use or recommend for these breakdowns?
@Sportz Kidz Coaches Eye is being retired
can you do a video on Jocelyn Alo
Can you show a good drill that will help? My little baseballer is doing this same thing. I’d love to better understand how to correct this with him.
How long was the pvc pipe ?
Came here from number 5 ✊✊
What's the difference between quickness and bat speed? If you're quick to the ball, your bat has to be moving fast. Does quick mean taking out wastes movement?
Yes exactly. How quickly can you get up to top speed
Great video. Exactly what is going on with my little slugger. Couldn’t figure out why he was slow to contact all of a sudden. Swing on left looked very recognizable.
If that was done in 30 minutes I wanna send my son over for a days work.
Is this not a front arm all forearm swing like Albert Pujols?
So that's a long swing. How old is this hitter ? matt a after school clinics coming up for the kids in danvers this winter
He is 12 or 13 not sure
13
👍🏾🤙🏾
I don't "buy" in
That thumbnail could use an edit..
I see it.
it is indeed a shorter swing. It’s also a much less powerful swing. he might hit a few more single to opposites field now, but he will have 0 power with this swing.
First day working on it. He will keep getting better. One step at a time
Feet are way too far apart, I don’t know why this is the trend now, feet should be no more than shoulder width apart.
How many greats in history have hit with their feet shoulder width apart? Basically nobody, right..?
The bad mechanics
Great video coach, thank you for sharing.
