Let's be honest, everything that's Levy's favourite is our new favourite.
True! Before I would've never considered playing the Dutch Defense, but after having Levy explain it and mention how much he likes it, now I play it a lot. I love it as well.
Yes! I play the Vienna and the Caro-Kann
@@Standard____ same lmao
I mean, I’m still learning the Vienna, but I’m gonna play it sometime soon

LOL me with the vienna and the caro
At one point in the video, you mention something about a "flank defensive player." Are there other types of unique play styles archetypes, and if so, can you make a video regarding them?
Great series. The Dutch is a great surprise defense against the English. I love how you show the overlap of the various systems, being flexible. It’s all in knowing what to do in different pawn structures. Thank you! I remember you saying that the Hippopotamus system is more passive, but I’ve seen Robert Hess play it against other titled players. It looks tricky for White if they press too soon. It can frustrate opponents, it seems. Those Hippo knights are on strange squares, e7 and d7. I’d like to see the pawn play with that system if you think it might be a fun system, a surprise system to play. Again, great series from a GothamChess subscriber.
Yeah I've encountered it once before and I just played aggressively in the center, unsure what I was really supposed to do otherwise, and ended up capitalizing on my opponent's mistakes of trading off the dark square bishop to win and pushing the kingside pawns too early. It looks really neat, I'll have to try it at some point soon.

Could we get a dedicated Leningrad Dutch video? Love these videos!

He’s making a course on it.
Dutch defense is always that it has a PLAN
Thank you SO MUCH for this. I was struggling against the queen's pawn opening till I found this response and video. Loving the Lenin Dutch!
I was promised 10 minutes and I got 7. That's why I suck at chess..
I have watched all the "10-Minute Chess Openings" videos and this is my favorite. I also think this is the best you-tube channel for chess that I have found. There are some great channels and some great games to watch but I always come back here to get some fantastic chess tips. Levy is also doing some great commentary on the Norway Chess 2020. I have won some games with the dutch, great stuff.
👍
Thanks for the instructive content! Can you please make a video on how to defend pawn storms when opposite side castling is done?
Thank you so much for these videos. These are amazing. Your teaching style seems to agree with me and that's the best. Love these openings videos. I never have a clue when playing.
Thanks Levy! Im really taking a lot from your videos, being a newcomer to the game 🙂🙃🙂🙃🙂
Levy love your content! Would be cool if u made a video about the dutch leningrad more in-depth:)
Dutch always did have a plan
heyhey I would truly love a new version of this video. Usually you really get all the information you need from your 10 min opening series but this one might just be a little too complicated or something. other than that great stuff and great content!
Does this defense gets us to tahiti?
So i learned this gist of this and on game 2, game two!, my opponent played the staunton gambit. I don't know if intentionally as it feels like a very organic move to play in response anyway. I won the game just barely but it was a messy nail biter that had nothing to do with opening theory. Will be sure to brush up on that variation soon as I think I will continue using the dutch as a way to build up on my alternative branchings away from king's indian initial moves if opportunity allows.
Just won with the Leningrad Dutch where white castled long. Starting to reaally enjoy this opening!
Good video bro. I play the bird and I love it, however the dutch always gets me in trouble, I'll see and try the Lenningrad, I also love pawn storming. Thanks.
Damn it, I lost you at 0:00
could you cover more on the leningrad dutch and classical dutches?
This whole time I thought I was playing Bird's. Turns out I was kind of playing the white version of the Dutch. The gambit with white always confuses me on what to do but here I can just turn it into the King's gambit. Time to watch that video and add another weapon to my arsenal. I love these positions and am glad that I now have a black version of this as well as another few weapons to add to my arsenal. Time to learn the King's Indian and King's gambit. Thanks Levy love your videos!!
what are you rated now
It is still called the birds when you do f4
I think when it’s played as white, it is called the bird opening. What I’m wondering is it the same king term game plan as the Dutch? Like a quick attack on kingside?
Thank you for this video. One of my mates keep stomping me with a strange f5 move. This and the stonewall video helped me crush him using f5 - very satisfying!!
can you please show the "modern defense" since it's a similar opening pattern but against the kings pawn?
Dutch needs a good PLAN
Also it would be cool if you made videos on how to play against certain openings.
I’ve watched this a couple of times now and I still don’t get what the Dutch defence is. It’s like 4 different variations depending on vague things your opponent does. And then work out what to do yourself from then on. It’s quite confusing. I really liked gothams Catalan video. That one explained the setup “in an ideal world” and then showed 4 or 5 ideas of what to do next which is really helpful as that’s the point I’m usually stuck what to do after the setup for the best.
1 d4 f5 is the Dutch Defence. 1 f4 is Bird's Opening. 1 g3 is Benko's Opening.
Levy can u please make a video on the kings gambit it would be very useful
Please make a course on this opening!!!
I like that the Dutch defense and king Indian look similar to each other. Thanks for all of your videos. Is playing the computer at different levels a good way to gauge where a person is at?
I I'm in love with Dutch defence
Dutch Van Der Linde played this opening in Red dead Redemption 2

Accidentally found the Dutch and it became one of my favorite black openings. But I go D6. Gotham thoughts on doing that for having the bishop cover f5 then putting the king Knight to F6, I have had some decent success with it but I'm at 700-800 ello
No seriously, Levy's video on the Stonewall Dutch IS actually the best video on youtube :)

Such a great quote. Caine pauses and then has such disdain in his voice when he says: "... and the Dutch!"
Can't believe you called Bird's opening the reverse Dutch
But this one is called "Bird's Opening: Dutch variation"
It is a reverse dutch tho, its only called the bird after Henry Bird, the dude eho played it a lot
3:17
took me a few seconds to realize that this position is literally just the blackmar diemer, but black took with the f pawn instead of the d pawn
What do you think about white playing 2. h3 3.g4 and what do u recommend against it @GothamChess
Fianchetto your c8 bishop, that's not a good play for white. That just opens up the diagonal straight to his rook.
can you make a separate video on Smith-Moura gambit
Levy underrating his video, actually one of best videos since Citizen Kane.
i play this more than any other opening
Isn't it Bird's opening when the Dutch defense is done with white (f4)?

…who only learned this because rdr2?
What is that?
This is the dutch plan ! 😂
What do you suggest when white plays bishop g5 as second move?
I have a feeling that everytime when I play Leningrad's Dutch Defence, my castled king has a very weak light squares diagonal, where I always play e6 instead of e5. Could you please make an extra video just for the leingrad's variation of Dutch? :D
My favorite fruit: blackberries
I usually play king h8 when i get checked
This is the first video I watched of yours over a year ago. I apologize that it is at least my 3rd time watching it before liking it.
It's like the more I learn the less I know
If my opponent place their light square bishop on c5 my e pawn gets pinned and i cant move it forward ,i tried moving the king away but that bishop got me into a lot of trouble later on
Persimmon. It has 2 types - hard indise like a pear, or jellylike - the second is something you must try.
how if white start with e4 first, should black start with g6 and after that develop f5?
How do you play the Dutch when they castle on the queen side? It seems to lose all the attacks
I'm curious what the middlegame plans are with the dutch. Any chance for a bit of help with this? I feel like I get good positions then just don't know what to do with them
hey if youre still confused hanging pawns has tons of good videos on the dutch that cover the moves in more detail into the middle game. Im still trying to figure that out myself but if you can control the center king side then you can be crazy and push up with pawns opening up a lot of opportunities for you pieces to spill out and overwhelm your opponent. The games I've been losing with it are usually because I cant push my e pawn up and you dont want to let people in your zone when youre playing dutch. its a mess to defend when a knight gets in and bishops are able to cut at your king. if you stack your queen on your rook, once you break through with the pawns on the f file you can launch that in for mate sometimes.
Same here, i usually try and infiltrate on the queen side with the rooks and pawn storm or jump into their side of the board with my knights, it helps if the position is closed
I got interested in the Dutch from a Guess The Elo video, and I saw this and now may even try to play it as white
What to do if they play something which i didnt rewiew in my studies? For example,we are deep in the openings and in the 5th 6th move they play something never happened before
Pls make a video on the Staunton gambit
i just ran into the Hopton attack and got absolutely wrecked. any recommendations how to defend against this?
Transpose into a leningrad by playing G6 or play H6 to scare the bishop away.
~~Q~~
@@QaamansLand what do you do if they castle queen side against your Dutch
@@colinbyer3018 Make sure not to trade your dark bishop and delay the development of your light bishop in favor of your knights.

Hi Gotham ,
I just want to ask you something,... I tried to play Dutch according to your game with Magnus.. At 3:11 what If I dont take white pawn and just play D6 I mean I will cover that pawn by bishop than I can continue with g6 than Knight to F6 and I have the similar setup but without the black pawn ?
Is there a certain rating you should be to start using this setup? I am currently around 900, should I start practicing this or wait till I get better at the game?
I would recommend using it, specifically the modern variation
Good shit
My favorite opening
Is 1...f5 viable against the Bird's Opening? Any particular tricks there to know?
I was once before an bird player and I think f5 is just not good
Hey GothamChess say if i control the center with two pawns, how would i utilize that too my advantage?
don't let the pieces move, then bing bang boom fuck your opponent up.
okay, but seriously, having control over the center with pawns allows you to restrict the development of your opponent's minor pieces (knights, bishops), while allowing your own pieces to slide themselves onto more favorable squares where they control important territory.
For the dutch defense leningrad variation what vid should i watch as theres so many ppl who made videos
I used to win a lot of games with the Dutch, but once I learned how hard it is to hold everything together in the stonewall and how easy it is to beat every other variation by just pushing h4 and then h5, I immediately stopped
What’s your go-to now?
Any chance of doing a climb on Leningrad Dutch Mr Levy sir (please)
Wow look at 2 year ago levy just as awesome as present day levy 👌👌
What is the best way to handle the qb3 lines? They seem to be the biggest drawback
Wow, so it seems Ive been playing the Leningrad Dutch whitout realising it. I was looking at Kings Indian and thought, wouldnt it be wonderfull if instead of just playing pasive Kf6 you first play .f5 having a lot more attacking potential. Also how is it a '10 minute video' if its 7 minutes :D
