I had no idea their marriage wasn't happy. We shared our wedding anniversary with them until they divorced and always thought how cool it was, but now it kinda makes me sad. I don't think I could stay with someone who didn't love me back. Breaks my heart for her.

I was stunned when it came out that it was a 40+ year loveless marriage on his part. However it didn't surprise me that she went back to him after he got sick as there were allegations of mistreatment by his caretakers. In the end love did keep them together.
I don’t understand how or why someone would put themselves through 39 years of a loveless marriage, if that was the case. A talented duo they were and great music.
@@rudeawakening3833 She felt love for him... Normal. He was not normal or just an ass .. it's one or the other isn't it, that's the bottom line. Also this happened back in the day when married couples stayed together. As she said she didn't want to crush the fans and that theme and $$

Aw thats so sad, for Toni. She's seems like such a sweet kind person. I fully understand her predicament; my ex is an Asperger's persona d in his case in particular, there just was no level of deeper connection emotionally.
SteppinLady Underwood I read her book, and she was brutal...saying he wasn't a good lover, etc. I was only glad she went to his side after hurting him publicly. She could have taught him to be more loving in my opinion...just hope he felt happy knowing she was there!!
+Raymond Villafana on her end, yes. Idk about him. I'm reading her book now, and the way she's described him, it sounds like he is textbook Asperger's. Introverted, undemonstrative with affection, perfectionism, moody, took himself too seriously, socially awkward, quiet, with genius-level talent. That's my take on it, anyway.
Toni: I'm so sorry you had such a loveless marriage. I will say this when I watched you two it was very apparent that he seemed to care little about you. You always tried to be kind and loving, but he could care less. I hope you finally found someone who cared and loved you!
@@TheKitchenerLeslie well I really wouldn't be too surprised about that, I don't condone it either. But if she wasn't getting any love from him they should have sought after counseling or called it quits.
You DO NOT stay married 39 years solely to keep fans happy. I don't care what she says or what her book says... there was something worthwhile to last 39 year's-- more than she's saying, at least. Toni at 75 looks fabulous. But I don't believe she's being frank and honest about the marriage. Obviously the marriage wasn't storybook, but who's is? As they say, there's TWO sides to the story!
I believe Daryl Dragon had schizoid personality disorder. If you look at old clippings of them together, Toni seemed scared of upsetting Daryl. She seemed very anxious and on edge. I found an old recording of them for Home Magazine. He controlled her.
I just weep for someone willingly sticking with a loveless relationship for that long! I've been married for more than 41 years myself; I can't imagine how that would feel if my wife and I didn't love each other immeasurably. But Toni seems to have a healthy perspective on it, so that's good - and as the narrator pointed out, she still looks amazing!
Worked at the label and was present for their show in Cleveland (Front Row Theater) in 1977. After the concert Toni wanted to go dancing but Daryl was tired and went to the hotel to rest. I had the rental car so we all piled in and went dancing! She was such a great person!
My lord she was gorgeous, tall, fun-loving, and that voice! The perfect woman, sad it was wasted. I grew up in the 1970s and sure long for those days back.
39 years? Something was there. I wonder if it's a case of never had learned to resolve to accept the person for who he was instead of fairytale. Would love to hear his side

I loved Captain & Tennille as a preteen! I’m so sorry to hear about Daryl’s passing. But, for Toni to say she stayed married for almost 40 years because she didn’t want to let her fans down... is a bit nutty. Cher didn’t have a problem living her life. Oh,, yes I am so disappointed to know the truth...but I understand. For me, listening to those beautiful love songs, hit my heart, smack dab!! I felt every word, every emotion. And I felt them deep, because I felt/interpurted each word with such strong feelings. I FELT the words Toni was singing had the emotion behind them. As I said, I understand that she stayed on because of "US" the fans. Isn't that what parents do, stay together "for the kids?" But, now, knowing the truth, I see the emotions in her face, feel the words she sings and realize she was striving and wanting to feel those words in her own life. She hungered to have the feelings she was singing. I understand, when we hear "LOVE SONGS" either we "feel" those words/live them, or we "wish" for them and the connection we need. Bless you Toni Tennille for enduring decades without any emotional connection to the man you shared your life with.
It’s sad but I can relate to that. If there’s no connection then....there’s no connection. I can’t speak for anybody else but I can’t force my heart to feel something it won’t ...And I don’t really mean to quote “I can’t make you love me” but that song perfectly describes my marriage.
Toni Tennille got the rock and roll last laugh. Her voice will always be the better part of the duo, AND she was hired by Roger Waters to voice Pink's wife on The Wall. She will always be rock history!!!
Stayed together for 39 years just for the fans??? That’s the silliest thing I have ever heard of. When Sonny and Cher got divorced, I was sad for 10 seconds, and then went on with my life. Brad and Jennifer, disappointed for 20 seconds and then forgot about it. A little more upset when the Beatles broke up.
Give her an Oscar! Talk about acting the part..... I loved her as a kid. I still think she is one of the great singers of the 1970s. No clue of their loveless marriage. It makes me very sad for her. In this interview she seems like a whole new woman! ((Release some new material!))
They say opposites attract and they definitely appeared like opposites. Tony being so vivacious and Captain always seeming monotone. It’s really tragic when you think about her staying in a loveless marriage for her fans.. although I do think he loved her in his own way. Hopefully, she found someone romantically late in life. She deserves as much happiness as she gave her fans!
No kidding. Left him as health problems were kicking in. But no sympathy for him on these boards. He probably would have liked a real marriage as well.
Loved seeing them on TV as a kid. She just sang her heart out. Darryl was so cool with the Captain's hat playing his dual electric pianos. They were the dynamic singing playing duo. Captain and Tennille.
I firmly believe their marriage difficulties and strains were all due to that hat!!!!!!! He loved that hat and there was no room for a woman in his life.
I understand that he wore the hat because he was losing his hair and couldn't deal with the fact that he was going bald.If I'm wrong,I'm wrong.I heard that someplace.idk.

At 75? Who could be bothered at that age? I can't be bothered with it at 45!

Beautiful lady, beautiful voice. Seems very humble.
Still to this day….her vocals blow my mind!!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!
I had no idea their marriage wasn't happy. We shared our wedding anniversary with them until they divorced and always thought how cool it was, but now it kinda makes me sad. I don't think I could stay with someone who didn't love me back. Breaks my heart for her.
That's what you get with industry created acts, they own you body and soul. If you let them. That's according to many who aren't buying their scare and control tactics. One industry I'm grateful to not have been qualified to enter.

She didn't say there was no love, just no romance..I am sure captain loved her in his own cold way.
I was stunned when it came out that it was a 40+ year loveless marriage on his part. However it didn't surprise me that she went back to him after he got sick as there were allegations of mistreatment by his caretakers. In the end love did keep them together.
She said the fans kept them together, and the marriage sucked but she stayed for the fans and I guess her career.

She looked great with longer hair. She's still gorgeous. You can tell he was very introverted and quiet. And she was vivacious. That only pleases one side.
I cherish and adore her strength, her honesty, and her sincerity. She's definitely an inspiration to my heart. She always will be. 😊
Great to see Toni Tennille, one of my favorites from the past. I saw her ten times in person as a teenager. I still have all of their albums. I was a pretty big fan. I’m now in y fifties and hard to believe she is 75. Where has the time gone?
Aw thats so sad, for Toni. She's seems like such a sweet kind person. I fully understand her predicament; my ex is an Asperger's persona d in his case in particular, there just was no level of deeper connection emotionally.
I really loved them back when. It's heartbreaking to realize they weren't happy.
Sad that Mr. Dragon passed away but at least she was at his bedside. R.I.P. Mr. Dragon
Roger James my prayers and condolences.
TRUE. That counts for something. 😢
SteppinLady Underwood I read her book, and she was brutal...saying he wasn't a good lover, etc. I was only glad she went to his side after hurting him publicly. She could have taught him to be more loving in my opinion...just hope he felt happy knowing she was there!!
Suzi64grad at least she was by his side when he passed away.
Good riddance to the captain.
She seems so real and, on top of that, she is still gorgeous
I met Toni at a Marriott many years ago, and she was so kind. Class act!
It's sad things did not work out. And on a side note, Ms. Tennille looks very beautiful for 75.
39 years??? With no love?
Ikr
I know. Something fishy about that. Might have had an open marriage.
Says who?
+Raymond Villafana on her end, yes. Idk about him. I'm reading her book now, and the way she's described him, it sounds like he is textbook Asperger's. Introverted, undemonstrative with affection, perfectionism, moody, took himself too seriously, socially awkward, quiet, with genius-level talent. That's my take on it, anyway.
You all should Google...."Famous people with Autism or Asperger's" I think you will be amazed at what you find.
Their love was kinda like Sonny and Cher. Great together in music, in social life and home not so much.
Daryl's expression of disinterest was indeed genuine. So sad. What a facade to uphold for so many years.
Toni: I'm so sorry you had such a loveless marriage. I will say this when I watched you two it was very apparent that he seemed to care little about you. You always tried to be kind and loving, but he could care less. I hope you finally found someone who cared and loved you!
She just described every woman on the planet. Looking for something from a man he just can't give.
Not every woman, just too many.
Desperate women !!
It's a shame such a beautiful woman would stay in a loveless marriage for so many years. She could have had any man she wanted except her own husband.
She could have had Frank Gifford and hosted a show with Regis. Same person, basically.
I thought she was beautiful inside and out, and talented! I never saw anything not to love about her.

Yes, 2 sides to every story, that's why I would love to read HIS side. But he didn't write a book, did he? Seriously, I would read it.
@@Monorail-Beyond-the-Veil 👍🎭😎😎😎

I believe Daryl Dragon had schizoid personality disorder. If you look at old clippings of them together, Toni seemed scared of upsetting Daryl. She seemed very anxious and on edge. I found an old recording of them for Home Magazine. He controlled her.
@@redlikewineagain697 And how many hours & sessions analizing him as a patient did you have to determine this, DOCTOR?
He kept her relevant for decades in spite of his dislike of her. A "thank you" wouldn't sprain her jaw.
No amount of money is worth your happiness. She wasted valuable time of her young life not knowing what it is to be loved by your partner. So sad 😞
"She wasted valuable time of her young life" That's a lot of our stories.

Here's his side....um...I didn't know why she divorced me.
As a kid in the 70's they were one of my favorite acts.
And The Carpenters. What a beautiful voice Karen had.
Hard to believe that she is 75. Wow, she looks awesome. She is so pretty
She’s 78 in 2022.
Sometimes the marriage is that of companionship which is unfortunate but Toni showed she cared being there for Darryl at the end 😔
39 years? Something was there. I wonder if it's a case of never had learned to resolve to accept the person for who he was instead of fairytale. Would love to hear his side
Growing up in the 70’s I was a die-hard rock n’ roller but I still tuned in every week to see the Cap’n and Teniille… think I had a crush on her…
I think I remember correctly. Their show was on right before MNF? I watched her religiously. I know I had a huge crush on her.
What a voice ❤
I hate that people suffer behind closed doors. The social mask can throw people off. There may be abuse, lack of love, lack of connection, a whole array of issues. Yet people stay locked into misery.
I thinks it becomes familiar. Couples get stuck in a rut, and afraid to move on, after so many years so they settle for the companionship.
@@janc8199 Totally agree. I’m in this right now and I see so many friends get divorced and there struggling financially and and lonely. I dont know what the answer is!
Toni deserved to find the love of her life. Without a loving, romantic connection why didn't she move on and keep looking? Millions of men adored her; she could have had her pick.
Exactly. Why feel sorry for her loveless marriage as so many seem to.... it's a choice she made.
Still love their music RIP captain
So your saying his ship has sailed?
So sad. My wife and I liked the Captain and Tennille when we were both teenagers in the 70s even though she grew up in upstate NY and me in Alabama. They looked they had great chemistry and really loved each other on stage. Shame that chemistry didn't translated into their marriage. I hope she will find true love. I know I did fortunately.
Still a tremendous fan of Toni and the music. I met her when she was on tour doing Victor/Victoria. She's a doll.
I, along with so many other fans, just took it for granted they were a happily married couple, especially when they sang all those love songs. You never heard of any problems between them until they divorced in 2014.

I loved Captain & Tennille as a preteen! I’m so sorry to hear about Daryl’s passing. But, for Toni to say she stayed married for almost 40 years because she didn’t want to let her fans down... is a bit nutty. Cher didn’t have a problem living her life. I dunno, I’m not buying that excuse. Daryl always seemed odd to me as a kid. I never felt a connection between the two. Maybe she was used to living for others? She never changed her hairstyle after all!
But, that’s a shame that she lived so long without a true loving relationship.
Eh, she probably had someone on the side. She certainly didn’t looked crushed, in this older interview.
Not to diminish her mourning the loss of Daryl now though.

Loved the songs and like everyone around, I thought they were married and were Happy....that the music was a reflection of their love. Why not...it was such heart felt! I was blessed as a kid hearing this wonderful music.🥰
Who the hell was stupid enough to think they had chemistry? He always looked so aloof and detached.
She abandoned him in illness which is about as pathetic as a person can be, but she is the only one still around to pretend she was the person we should feel sorry for.
So sad that Captain & Tennille had a loveless marriage. My wife and I met in 1975 and got married in 1978. We had The Wedding Song as one of our songs. We celebrated 40 years in May last year. Sorry to read that Daryl died. RIP Daryl. Love you Toni.
