She's not only singing and selling the hell out of the vocal, but she's playing a lead piano line with one hand and an amazing bass line on the minimoog with the other.
Love how you phrased it “selling the hell out of the vocal.” So true! It’s easy to become too focused on playing a instrument when singing and vice versa. And she’s doing a hell of a job at both here!
They were both talented and wonderful, but she’s often overlooked. Tenille was incredibly talented with one of the most beautiful voices. And here you see, and playing a synth and piano at the same time. Live. 🤩 I was expanding into more of Captain and Tennille’s albums recently, and they have an incredible body of work. Worth exploring they were so wonderful. Rest in peace Captain! Thank you Midnight Special!
When this gigantic hit song came out in the 1970s, I didn't like it all. I thought it was corny and dumb. What did I know...I was into Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Jethro Tull, ha ha. And i still love all of those bands, but today I listen to Love Will Keep Us Together and I think it's one of the greatest pop songs of my time. It's so perfectly written and performed, with melody, a beat, a hook and a keyboard riff that immediately captures your ear. Plus the lyrics: "Young and beautiful / Someday your looks will be gone."....very unusual for a love song at the top of the charts. Neil Sedaka and co-writer Howard Greenfield created an enduring classic (one of many).
If you were around in the 1970s, you will recall the great music that was on the radio. This song is almost 50 years old. It's great. Time does go by so fast. Cheers! ✌️
Toni is no joke on the keyboards and played them on the early Capt. and Tennille recordings. Here she is on the bass synth and of course the acoustic piano while Daryl (RIP) is on synth melody and organ. All keys and drums, no other instruments.
in addition to toni's moog bass, there is a hidden bass player somewhere playing insane pick bass lines all over the song. not sure why they're off camera.
Didn't know she played keys too. Seems all live too. Very impressed with Tennilles talent I didn't know before. She always had a big full voice. PS RIP my good friend Mark who was a big fan of hers before we lost you so young. And to the Captain of the keys.
A lot of folks didn’t like them (too poppy), but I did. This live performance was great! Toni had a great charisma. She made up for Darryl's apparent lack thereof. 😂 The only thing missing here was some backup singers. I was waiting for "Sedaka is back" at the end. Hahaha💜
i agree they could have used a couple background singers like Clydie King and Vanetta Fields who regularly appeared on the midnight Special backing up groups.
Of course I remember this song but wow a live performance with Tenille playing piano and synth and singing....next level talent here...best part- performing as a trio!
This song is my symbol of 🇺🇲 pop music and I play it out of my ears every day at all times. From a 31 year old 🇯🇵 male who is a captive of 🇺🇲 music from the late 50's to early 80's…
I admit, that as a young teenage boy listening to Grand Funk Railroad and Black Sabbath...I had a hard time telling my friends how much I Ioved the Captain and Tennille . 😂 They killed it❤️
I remember when they first came on TV and singing this all the time as a youngster. A time I would trade to go back to at the drop of a hat for all reasons. Ty whoever is using AI to revise these ancient videos ❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️❤️🙏❤️
I remember as kid my parents having their albums and playing them in the house, now I'm here in 2024 listening to them on You Tube. You Tube is what keeps these memories alive in the 21st century.
@@nicsfan4ever The divorce was for asset protection due to Daryl's illness. Toni took care of Daryl as his illness progressed. They were together up to Daryl's time of death. Love really did keep them together.
Love this song! I have always loved their music, I was in Middle school when this song was on the radio, I just started listening to Top 40 then. Love Will Keep Us Together, was the very first song that I fell in love with. This song just brings me such great memories & how I became a huge fan of Captain & Tennille, that has never changed. I'm just an even bigger fan today.
Some fun facts... This song spent 4 weeks on top of billboard Top 40 (summer of 1975). It was the number one song of the year 1975. I remember Casey Kasem raving about it and the artists. Written by Howard Greenfield and Neil Sedaka 2 years earlier. Neil was a great songwriter and singer in the 1970s as well. Toni's playing piano and synth bass. The Captain is playing everything else, I so love the Hammond B3 organ with a Leslie speaker. It just gives a band such a full sound.
Yes, perusing other songs that went to #1 in 1975, there was a grab bag of variety: Elton John (three times), Bee Gees, John Denver, Eagles, Van McCoy, Neil Sedaka (twice), David Bowie, Glen Campbell, Olivia Newton-John...what a time for music just before disco took over for a while.
I heard this song back then, didn't think much about it. Heard it recently for the first time in some 30+ years and was struck by it's geniousity. Now I'm obsessed with it! And this was a fantastic performance, especially the vocals. It feels good to know that she's still with us. She's turned into a sweet old lady now. ❤❤❤
The first concert I ever went to !! 1976 was the year, right before entering 7th grade. Went with my buddy next door, his mom driving us there in a customized van !!
Amazing live performance. They both had great keyboard chops. I like this better than any of the later TV appearances, where she just sings and he's obviously faking it. In a Keyboard magazine interview, he really hated the faking and even the editing which showed his hands playing something different that what was on the track! I loved The Midnight Special, In Concert and all that ilk from the 70's because 99% was actually played live.
I was 10 in 1978 and loved C&T. They played this song for years after it was written on the radio. In the 70's I had the best exposure to all kinds of music. I loved disco, rock and yes, even punk all at the same time. So Love will Tea us apart from Joy Division was on the top of my list as well around 1979 . Also can't forget about KISS :)
Probably my all time favorite song. Brings back memories of going for ice cream with the family on a hot summer night and this blasting on the radio. I guess i would've been around 4 or 5.
This song was so well produced, arranged, sung, etc. I love how complex the music is, and I always remember Toni singing and playing her two keyboards, with the Captain playing his. They were SO well in synch, I didn't know which keyboard sound was which. I love this performance, but as someone here said, I miss the fantastic backing vocals (believe they were her sisters) and the fabulous "Sedaka is Back." Never knew what that meant until I read that Neil Sedaka was making a helluva comeback with "Laughter in the Rain."
I had a HUGE crush on Toni Tennille in the 70’s. I used to imagine that she was singing this song to me. Oh, did I mention I was about 13 or 14 years old?
Toni tennille is the only one left of the group of the captain and tennille watching the captain beat up the keyboard 🎹 plus Toni tennille singing and playing the piano at the same time. I have record album s CDs and cassette tape s of the captain and tennille in my collection of music 🎶 on my shelf plus I have been a listener of the captain and tennille since I was in 6th grade now 61 years old and still listening to them . Would’ve been nice if they occasionally showed Toni’s left hand killing it on the Minimoog bass. I guess in 1975 no one even understood what was going on there. Very impressive.
LOVE REALLY DID KEEP THEM TOGETHER! Their divorce was a very thinly veiled asset protection move due to Daryl's illness. Toni took care of Daryl herself as his illness progressed. They were together up to his time of death. "He'll always be my Captain." was her statement afterwards.
Hell yeah!!! I remembered C&T as a novelty talk show act…not anymore! She killed it.
...always loved that mini-Moog bass line on this.
Drummer's like- "Hey what about me!".
You couldn’t fake the Midnight Special, all of it was live real time!
70's music is timeless. This music is still great today.
It really is. The golden age of musical creativity. And all the greats from the 60s were in their peaks !

Toni Tennille on playing two separate lines and singing it's so amazing.
This song was out the summer after I graduated from high school. The best era to grow up! Great music in the 60's and 70's!
J'ai adoré.... j'adore encore 50 ans après....
Daryl (The Captain) Dragon was the Beach Boys touring keyboardist for a number of years in the late 60s/early 70s before hooking up with Toni.
Toni sang back up with them too.
@@Jbones72she was hired to play piano though. Rarely did she ever sing with them.

Why did The Midnight Special end?
The only music show that was truly live.
It was a '70s relic that became a victim of the MTV-era. After ending in 1981, "Midnight Special" was soon replaced by "Friday Night Videos."

@keymusic She majored in music and vocals in college...
She did keyboards on the Beach Boys 1972 tour, without the Captain.
That outro sounded so good. I wish they’d continued it for another minute
