If particularly his sound in this interpretation is for you the best of all the others, then it would be perhaps usefull to visit an ear specialist. The comparison between the SOUND of your hero and DFO leaves no margin of doubt in any case, especially in videos, as this concert or the 3-4 minutes of Khatchaturian (ruclips.net/video/ghe1RNb5m9s/видео.html), where -as in this video- your hero simply executes technically, if not harshly, while DFO flies and sings over a whole orchestra! Hear your hero in Mendelson's concerto, where he is sometimes fairly heard. This why he avoids expressivities: not out of timidness or classicism, but because he cannot open up his voice, without squealling. How to sweaten without flesh in your sound? Who is going to hear you? Of course I fully respect a possible answer that this is a matter of taste; Let me simply suggest the fact that not any second one is misjudged. This was the prevailing view in periods of decadence (e.g. 1920-1940), when the negative heroes (e.g. Nosferatu, in our example the absolute lack of sweetness in a lean and sometimes harsh sound) were very popular. Anyway everybody agrees that this is a magnificent interpretation (actually the best of all, perhaps of any possible), under the batton of the real maestro, the king DFO.

Dear '1 analyst', please, accept my apology. The first sentence ("If particularly ... specialist") of my previous "reply" is definitely not mine. This is of course obvious from the first place, since afterwards I write explicitely that "I fully respect" your taste. It is most possible that the first sentence had been copy-pasted elsewhere, BUT NOT BY ME. Apart from this I had not yet decided to send the (rest of the) comment, but, unluckily, I pressed the enter button. Therefore, please, consider my whole "reply" (not only the forged 1st sentence) as never sent. Accept, please, once more my apology for any inconvenience, as well as my deepest respect not only for your musical preferences, but for your vast musical knowledge (on violinists, interpretations etc.) Anyway, it's more than sure that we speak of the Everest of the violin, no matter if even Everest might have different peaks.
      Sincerely yours

Although a "heavy" romanticized interpretation (as one would expect given the players, and the period of time) this none-the-less is a fine performance, engaging, and done with real thought for the music. It is very superior to the other more recent clip featuring four modern "giants" of the violin.
This was the first piece of Baroque music I fell in love with. Thank you for posting this!

An incredible historical document. The two greatest Russian violinists ever, and their sons! The video resolution is sad, but the sound gets through. I've heard the two Oistrachs live, but of course neither of the Kogans given their restrictions to Russia.

My understanding (secondary sources of course) is that the elder Kogan wasn't allowed to leave Russia because he was involved in some way with the state security apparatus. As compensation, Russia let him use the two finest violins they had. The elder Oistrakh, for comparison, had to make do with a 2nd-tier Strad in case he decamped with it, as so many Russian musicians did then.
