This live concert should be praised in every possible way. Lipatti is subtle without being sentimental, has an extraordinary touch and a rare musical sense with infinite accents. His Celeste liberty of expression and his interior intensity are almost censorial. This interpretation invites the listener to be inside the music of Mozart with an emotional active role. The cadanze are superb, expressive and totally in context. Thank you for posting this amazing document !

"The concert was broadcast, but owing to the rules of the Swiss Musicians Union, the tapes were destroyed three weeks after the transmission. For eight years, Madame Lipatti and I searched Europe in the hope of finding a recording taken from the air by an amateur. In 1959, two materialized in one week, both recorded by amateurs, one in Zürich and the other in Copenhagen. Angel's engineers in London worked for a year to produce from the better of these primitive originals the most acceptable sound"

Mozart is always graceful, but in this pianoconcerto No 21, especially in the second movement, he is excedingly that. One understands, why this concerto is so popular and the chosen music of a Swedish romantic film "Elvira Madigan". Dinu Lipatti is a first-rate pianist, his cadenzas are suberb.

Ofcourse Lipatti is great as well. Perhaps the greatest pianist that lived so far. I'm not so sure about how his Mozart would measure up to Horowitz's but Horowitz recorded this at the height of his maturity while Lipatti died at a very premature one.
I'm sure Lipatti's is more 'perfect' though since he is a pianist whos level is unsurpassed. There's Lipatti and than there's everyone else.

Gracias.

Agocics, as a schooled musician me once told me that the movement, rythm comes within the music itself, dinu was besides a gifted pianist above all a dedicated musician, he would never allowed himself to the so-called (rocket) brilliance of performances now-a days. The 'rocket' comes from the music itself with good help from a gifted perfomer. I think that even rubenstein sometimes needed to smoothe out things. By dinu that is not the case.
Of course 'smoothing' out is somewhat the opposite of 'rocket-playing'.

I do not claim that Dinu Lipatti was "the greatest pianist ever" - all I can say is that his interpretations of Liszt, Chopin and Mozart give me huge pleasure.
Depending on my mood (and the piece I want to hear), I will turn to Argerich, Arrau, Brendel, Horowitz, Rubinstein, or others - but I would not say that one is better than another. I will say that Dinu Lipatti had a technical skill and musical knowledge which he used to communicate what he felt to be the composer's vision in a way that moves me deeply.

@@RaineriHakkarainen I don't think you understand what I wrote. Read my first sentence again, and notice the words "I do not claim...."
You believe that Sokolov is the greatest, and that is fine. My point was that I enjoy listening to Lipatti and other pianists.

Lipatti's Mozart is amazing. It's a shame there are only recordings of him playing this concerto and K310 ):

Das ist natürlich ein Meisterwerk. Mozart, Lipatti, Karajan.
Dreimal Bravo!!!

David IKR! I've listened to other recordings that I could find, just to see if it was just Mozart's work, and if the section was simply good. But NO! Lipatti, and ONLY Lipatti plays these arpeggios this beautifully!
And the cadenzas, I don't even know what to say about them. It seems every pianist plays different cadenzas in this concerto. And if I ever find the fortune to play this with an orchestra, I'm not sure if I can just play the cadenza I prepared. After hearing this, I don't think it will be possible. This just sounds,
      Perfect...
