Constantin Lipatti, appelé depuis son plus jeune âge "Dinu", est né en 1917 à Bucarest dans une famille de musiciens, d'une mère pianiste et d'un père violoniste. Le compositeur Georges Enesco accepte d'être son parrain. ll travaille le piano et la composition avec Mihail Jora pendant trois ans avant de rejoindre le Conservatoire de Bucarest, où il étudie auprès de Florica Musicescu.
La mère de Dinu, Anna Lipatti, est une forte femme qui, balayant toutes les objections et bravant même l'opposition de son mari, a décidé d'emmener ses deux fils à Paris : elle y débarque au début d'août 1934 et, leur fortune aidant, s'installe dans un confortable appartement donnant sur un square, au 9 de la rue Saint-Romain.
Anna Lipatti a une passion pour Dinu, et c'est pour lui et sa carrière, qu'elle a choisi Paris : Cortot, qui avait découvert Dinu au concours International de piano de Vienne, l'année précédente (il n'a pas caché sa colère que le trop jeune Roumain n'ait eu que le 2eme prix !), l'a invité à venir travailler avec lui. Anna va saisir cette chance.
Dès la rentrée de 1934 elle inscrit son fils à l'Ecole Normale dans la classe de Cortot (qui le confie d'abord à sa répétitrice, Yvonne Lefébure) et dans celle de Paul Dukas pour la composition, ainsi que dans celle de Charles Munch pour la direction d'orchestre. Partout il stupéfie par ses dons, sa technique déjà très assurée, sa musicalité. Et aussi par sa simplicité, qu'il conservera toujours.
Paul Dukas, après un premier trimestre, estime qu'il « n'a besoin que de produire pour acquérir, par des expériences personnelles, la pleine possession d'un talent presque formé »... et meurt brutalement quelques mois plus tard, le 17 mai 1935. Sa classe est aussitôt confiée à Nadia Boulanger, qui « hérite » ainsi de Lipatti - qu'elle poussera au premier rang après avoir découvert à son tour ses dons exceptionnels.
Il naîtra entre ce nouveau Maître et ce nouvel élève une amitié à peu près unique, même si, au cours de sa très longue carrière, Nadia Boulanger a suscité des liens réciproques d'une rare profondeur avec bon nombre de musiciens, qu'ils fussent ou non ses disciples. Dinu Pour sa part la considérera comme sa « mère spirituelle » - et ce n'était, ni pour lui ni pour elle, une simple formule.
Cortot était un professeur extrêmement exigeant. Il faisait jouer à son élève les mêmes études pendant des semaines avant de passer à une autre pièce. Lipatti a adopté la discipline mentale de son professeur et s’est imposé pour habitude de ne jamais jouer une œuvre en public avant de l’avoir entièrement comprise. Il étudiait des œuvres pendant des années avant de la présenter en concert.
Dinu Lipatti (1917-1950) fait partie de la triste famille de ces artistes disparus trop tôt, emporté par la maladie à l’âge de 33 ans. Sa notoriété est un cas unique dans l’histoire de l’interprétation: elle repose presque exclusivement sur ses enregistrements, peu nombreux certes, mais salués comme "de l’or pur".

La maladie a fixé les limites d'un répertoire que Lipatti mûrissait lentement. Dans un premier temps, il se la jouait en imagination, par cœur, en envisageant tous les styles possibles ; ensuite il la disséquait mesure par mesure, sans aucun souci expressif. Enfin, il faisait la synthèse du travail technique et de son alchimie personnelle. Des mains très longues et solides (avec un petit doigt aussi développé que les autres et, comme eux, parfaitement indépendant) et des épaules de lutteur, contrastant avec la fragilité de l'homme, lui permettaient de doser les attaques et les touchers, de nuancer le son jusqu'à l'impalpable, et d'habiller son émotion de l'apparence la plus pure.
En 1946, il signe un contrat avec Walter Legge, producteur musical britannique et découvreur de talents qui travaille alors avec les plus grandes stars de la musique de l’époque, Karajan, Callas, Furtwängler ou encore Schwarzkopf. Dinu Lipatti entre donc dans l’écurie EMI qui, dès l’année suivante, commence à publier les enregistrements qui vont faire sa renommée internationale.

Dinu Lipatti was such a brilliant pianist, especially in his recordings of Chopin. I have heard the waltzes played by many of the great pianists of the 1940s through the 1990s and his seem so much more clear than many of the others. If only he could have lived at least another 33 years. He died way too young!

And if he had reached into the era of modern recording capability, and had known Lipatti, Hoffman, Rubinstein, Argerich, Zimerman Ashkenazy, Richter, Pogorelich, the Younger etc., can you imagine what we would have today.

After an evening playing (or in some cases trying to play) Chopin and (innocently) eating what I didn't realize was my first Indica edible (overdose), I woke up next morning (having gone to bed apparently) with the vivid memory of a dream. I was sitting in the front row of what seemed like a concert hall but was actually the Royal Buffet in Schaumburg. I had a plate of food that was cold and congealed and as I sat there transfixed by Lipatti playing a recital, a voice whispered, "Can you introduce me afterwards". I looked round at the famous chiseled image of Chopin talking to me. He was standing there. Everyone in the audience nearby was smiling knowingly. Nobody told him to sit down and shut up. Lipatti was smiling as well. Anyway, when he finished the piece, he turned towards me to acknowledge Chopin, and so I looked round again. This time, Chopin was running back along an aisle as though trying to escape. Lipatti said to me, "Don't worry, I'll talk to him later..." and at that point I lose the thread. It was as though I was from too distant a time, but Lipatti was not. He was therefore going to be able to talk to the great man.
I get the buffet issue: cannabis gives you the munchies and the Royal buffet is a great place at which to pig out. The rest seems to make some sense but Chopin running away - I don't get that!
Lipatti’s artistry is on another level. All of the recordings we’re left with from this all-too-short career quite literally set the standard for so many masterpieces: everything he played of Chopin, Schubert Impromptus, Schumann Piano Concerto, Grieg Piano Concerto, Bach Partita No 1, Ravel Alborada del gracioso, Mozart Piano Concerto no 21, Mozart piano sonata in a minor, Liszt Concert Etude in f minor, Bartok Piano Concerto No 3... The list goes on and on. Every performance of his is itself a masterpiece.
Ma mère m'avait offert ce CD lorsque j'avais 15 ans.Aujourd'hui, j'en ai 49. Mon prof de piano disait que Lipatti était le meilleur interprète de Chopin. Je ressens toujours les mêmes frissons. Merci Chopin, merci Lipatti pour ces moments magiques.

When I was a child, they were playing Lipatti's performance of the first waltz very often on the radio, in my country. At that time, I didn't know who the performer was and was not aware of the brilliancy of that performance, but I can still recognize it.

Les préférences sont très personnelles, intimes , et je comprends que le terme " reference absolue" puisse paraître excessif ! D'autres citeront Rubinstein , Samson Francois , Pires ... toute opinion est relative...L'essentiel est la musique qui aide chacun à s'évader, mieux à s'élever. La disparition récente de Freire laisse un grand vide dans le monde de la musique ! J'ai eu le bonheur de l'entendre avec Argerich .Quel bonheur !
colettebibes Oui Nelson Freire reste un grande pianiste (qui a excellé aussi en jazz car sa vie d'artiste a été longue de 1944 jus-qu' en 2021 - pas comme la vie de Dinu Lipatti decedé a 33 ans - mais le touché au piano de Nelson Freire reste comparable aux autres grands artistes doués de notre temps et sans comparaison possible avec ceux d'avant la dernière guerre ( comme Michelangeli Rubinstein Ciccolini etc. ou Lipatti en virtuosité et profondeur extrême touchant fort l'âme humaine- ou comme Sergiu Celibidache le légendaire chef d'orchestre dont les nombreux fans en FR comme par tout s'ils n'arrivaient pas a obtenir un billet a son concert -surtout avec Bruckner- ils ont écrit sur du carton devant la salle Pleyel à Paris ou était prévu le concert "Une place pour voir Dieu"

The one and only that NEVER interpreted Chopin's Waltzes in a kitch manner ! The Besançon Festival recording is even better. Lipatti is by far my best recorded pianist of all time.
I had never heard of Lipatti before, but his interpretations of Chopin are utterly delightful -- never kitschy or over-romanticized, just clean and straightforward. This was quite a find for me. Really too bad he died so young. Love it.

Oriunde v-ati afla, in tara ori ba, fiti, va rog amabila, deferenta si precauta la intrarea in polemici inutile atunci cind este vorba de parerea, gustul, efuziunea personala si nationalismul sau patriotismul (este acelasi lucru, informati-va daca aveti dubii in aceasta privinta!) cuiva, in aceasta speta, eu. Va asumati un risc gratuit si complet neavenit, care nu poate duce decit la conflict. Va asigur - si nicidecum superior, asa cum va permiteti dvs. - ca in astfel de cazuri tacerea distinsa, delicata este mai buna decit orice fel de interventie, inevitabil, cu iz belicos. Se spune ca poetul Marin Sorescu a vazut scris, nostim, pe usa unui cinematograf din Oradea: "Pe aceasta intrare numai se iese"... Sper ca am fost clar.
Dinu Lipatti's interpretation of Waltz #7 In C Sharp Minor, Op. 64/2 (21:46) is the best I've ever heard and in my eyes no other interpretation comes close to it.

Speed is not the goal and is definitely not a proof of intense musicality.
But temperament have a huge influence on the way a pianist or a musician will play music.
A pianist who want to play fast to play like most pianist is nothing else than a parrot.
Rubinstein plays the waltz a lot slower but his interpretation are wonderful. Just different as Rubinstein had a totally different temper.
Here, I'm very very touch by the fiery temper of Lipatti, being so comfortable with the speed of most of the brilliant waltz and the small faster waltz.
Everything is so clear and each phrases means something and bring you to something else.
Even with the bad recording compare to today's quality of recording, the waltz in Bminor, for exemple, is so deep and I can nearly hear a singer and somebody crying saying lyrics while Lipatti is playing.
That musician wasn't just playing what is written but he was living it, feeling it and understand it.
What a wonderful instinct that man used to have!
What fascinating me with Lipatti is the fact that he wasn't just like this with Chopin, but every composers that he plays and we have the chance to hear after he recorded their work, are just as deep as Chopin.
Enescu, Mozart, Liszt, Bach and not mentioning Scarlatti.
He was a deep musician and understood the language so well that he was able to speak it his own way.
If he had lived a bit longer he would have been listed among the biggest!
In my eyes he is, but most people remember Rubinstein, Horowitz, Cziffra, Richter,... who are all wonderful, but forgot to put Lipatti on that list!

I'm not a musician & don't pretend to know anything about music, but I do love listening to a piano played well. There's a certain "touch," I want to call it, a way of making all the notes played sound like they're being played at different volumes, that really make a performer's playing stand out to me. I don't know what this attribute is called, or even if it's something that even exists outside my own mind, but this guy seems to have a really great touch on the keys. I don't like classical piano. It usually sounds so "stiff" & "rigid" to me, but there is a "fluidity" here I could listen to all day. I can really hear "the song," the passion in his playing, like he really means it & isn't just "playing the notes."
Anyway, if there is anyone out there reading this who understands music, plz let me know if what I'm so horribly trying to describe is real & if I'm right in saying I hear it in this guy's playing. Thx!
Dynamics is the word your after! And yes lipatti is a master of this his pedal (when you hear notes sustained for more time than the key is pressed) usage is amazing as well, takes a bit more ear but you car hear it if you listen closely. Many over play Chopin with tons of pedal and make it sound like crap! If you like the non stiff sounding piano music I would also try some Robert Schumann played by Alfred Cortot!

HardgoreAlice yes there are many more greats like Josef Hofmann for more Chopin, cortot for Schumann and Chopin, Vladimir sofronitsky for Scriabin and some Schumann, auther Schnabel for Beethoven, Shostakovich for Shostakovich, Rachmaninov for Rachmaninov, there’s an endless sea you just gotta search. Although with piano interpretations one mans trash is another mans treasure, it’s all very subjective, but have fun!

Its too rushed and mechanical. Listen to Rubinstein to hear it played with respect for the music.
Ya gotta be kidding! One of the great things Lipatti did in Concert was not to play the Waltzes in numerical order, but changed the order to achieve a brilliant finish. Everything he did was truly great. Listen to the Romantic Concertos he performed. Wonderful!

Technisch perfekte und zugleich lyrische Interpretation dieser romantischen Meisterstücke im relativ schnellen Tempo mit glänzendem Klang und völlig effektiver Dynamik. Schade, dass dieser unvergleichliche Virtuose so jung gegangen war!

LOL pianists like Lipatti and Cortot are generally accepted as greater Chopin interpreters than either of those 3.
Il a atteint une perfection égale à celle de Michelangeli, peut-être est-il même le seul dans l'histoire de l'enregistrement à l'avoir dépassé - je pense à cet enregistrement mythique d'Alborada del gracioso de Ravel, qui dépasse l'entendement à tous les niveaux, du jamais vu, un miracle (pour une oeuvre qui n'est même pas si incroyable que cela, c'est ironique). Mais comparer des artites de ce niveau ne revient à rien. Michelangeli, Richter, Horowitz, Cortot et Rubinstein étaient tous des grands artistes avec leur personnalité unique et leurs qualités propres. Mais il est vrai que Maestro Dinu Lipatti était peut-être le pianiste, le musicien même, le plus accompli qu'on ait jamais connu en tout cas sous l'ère de l'enregistrement. S'il avait pu vivre une longue existence, Dieu sait les merveilles qu'il nous aurait offert, mais surtout, les joies qu'il aurait encore pu vivre...
