I remember what a massive meme this episode became. After it aired, whenever an important character would die on The Walking Dead or even completely unrelated shows like Game of Thrones, there would be a barrage of "don't worry, they probably crawled under the dumpster" jokes. It really goes to show just how contrived and ridiculous it was to have Glenn survive that scenario.

Wait, Glenn already knew he was going to be a father in this episode. In fact, he knew it as early as 6x1. We know this because when Glenn and Maggie are discussing why she should stay back and Glenn is saying it's for the benefit of Deanna, Maggie says "that's not the only reason" and Glenn says "yeah, it's not." I know the episode is not really eventful or have a lot of action, but it provides the embodiment of what a zombie apocalypse can do to someone. When you think about the characters with moral compasses in relation to Glenn, Glenn had very strong role models with Dale being the first to teach him, then coming Hershel, and after that he was left as the sole moral character in the group. He was made for his role and it was sad to see him break his character when he killed but not unsurprising when you reflect back in season 2 when he sided with the group on killing the prisoner.

I think if he did die in this episode, they should have put the speech he gave to Enid about 'we carry on to honor those who can't' in an earlier episode, because that was the only thing I truly would have missed from his further arc. I do absolutely love the symbolism of him being underneath the dumpster and Enid finding him - Enid being severely mentally ill at the time and wondering 'what is the point anymore' and Glenn, someone who is the optimist and always sees the good in everything, surviving only because Walkers were busy consuming the body of someone else, hiding under a filthy, smelly dumpster, coming out covered in blood and probably smelling terrible, being at one of his lowest points - and he still comes out of that with enough mental optimism to give Enid a cheerful point of view about the situation at hand. I have always loved watching TWD to feel better when I am having bad mental health episodes, and watching Glenn come out of this is definitely a point that gives me hope

That episode where they forced Glenn to kill the Saviours was honestly one of my most disliked episodes for the exact reasons you mentioned. Character deaths always feel the most impactful when it is because of their choices, good or bad. To me, this was the point when TWD started to decline. Up to then, the show had always prioritized realism and storytelling regardless of what happened in the comic. But once Negan was on the horizon, the show reverted to tricks and cliches to try and manipulate the audience into thinking certain events would or wouldn’t happen. It never recovered and S7 and 8 only got worse.

They enter the church and Glen give a fantastic speech to her about how people that die live on afterwards through the people that they have impacted. She asks him who are those people to you? He says his parents, Dale, Hershel, Tyreese. A really cool moment that gives Enid strength and hope and resonates even more after Glen dies. Glen becomes one of those that died but still influences and inspires Maggie, Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Enid, and others.

He was quick, smart, thrifty, knew how to plan escapes no matter the situation with his history as a pizza delivery boy. However... What do you do when you have a freshly dead body on you that is clearly heavier than you? A situation that despite you being strong woulda been near impossible to get out of and don't? Imagine if he died here and a few episodes later we had a zombified Glenn that Daryl, Michonne, or Maggie would have to put down?

It would’ve been interesting if Glenn had died in ‘Thank You’ but Nicholas would’ve survived and had done the same thing he did when Aiden died, blamed something instead of himself. It would’ve been cool to see Maggie resent Nicholas and then he would be a character taken out by Negan suffering the death Glenn had in the comics making it ironic. That way Abrahams death wouldn’t have been overshadowed and it would’ve opened up the universe to a time where Maggie and Negan would see eye to eye on something. Where oddly enough she didn’t resent but thanked Negan doing bad on another character who was so hated.

I do think there was a really wasted opportunity to see the impact of Glenn going against his morals and going down a darker path. Glenn was always the moral compass of the group, he saw the best in people and gave people who wronged him a second chance, and he never killed until he was forced into it, and it really shook him, but he didn't live long enough for it to really affect him. I think it actually would've been great if they killed Abraham and maybe Sasha too as she doesn't really do anything after this and is just annoying, we can still get the revenge storyline with Rosita, but have Maggie lose the baby and Glenn live. Some people say Maggie shouldve died, but I think she's too important in the story going forward and killing her would be too much, especially as she was the last character tying things to the Greene family. But if she had a miscarriage because of what was happening to her and the trauma of the line up, that would definitely push Glenn into becoming more immoral and unhinged and becoming a darker character. Seeing Glenn vs Negan I think would've been a lot cooling and more satisfying than vs Rick, and Glenn couldve died in season 8 instead of Carl, and because he was the moral compass, Rick wants to make peace with Negan to honour him, as he was his best friend. I've only just thought of this now, but it actually makes a lotta sense, and would've been so much better. Maybe it wouldve been too much for Maggie to lose her baby AND Glenn, she'd definitely never be able to have the same redemption and forgiveness arc with Negan, but maybe Glenn could get her pregnant again and she could still have her baby

pretty amazing that Scott of all people is one of only 2 OG Alexandrians to make it to the series finale, especially considering he survived this episode despite a gunshot wound and the only other original Alexandrian, Aaron, is a straight up main character by the end. Scott was the most untouchable Red Shirt in TWD history. honorable mention to Diane.

it wouldn’t have been what anybody would’ve wanted. especially glenn who everyone loved. but in light of the spare time he was given and the actions he had to take despite being morally against it, you make a great point. i’d feel bad for maggie not being there with him in the moment but it would’ve spared her from witnessing the tragedy that came to be

Great video. I agree on Glenn. I liked his character, and at the time he was even more popular than Rick or Daryl. But... season 2 had a story for Glenn, then season 3, 4, and then 5. Season 6.. he was legit just waiting around moping after this episode, waiting for the bat.

Nice exploration of the episode, I actually always saw Nicholas as useless but this actually made me look deeper. Nicholas was useless and selfish but then he grew thanks to Glenn, the problem was in this scenario he was seriously out of his depth. He kind of represents the Alexandrians, he was selfish and useless but he ultimately means well the trouble is with the darkness of the world edging closer to home they are totally out of their depth.

Hey, Thrifty Typewriter! I have a suggestion for a potential future video. You may be interested in possibly creating a character analysis video about Abraham. I feel like most people just kinda write off Abraham as the simple tough badass character when, in fact, there seems to have been so much more interesting aspects about him. Like his grief with losing his previous family, his purpose for surviving being to save the world, his desire to have children with Sasha, etc..
Just an idea! Anyways I enjoyed this video as usual!

The only thing people think of related to this episode is the Glen fake out death, which sucks in a way, since it was such a well done episode that was tense from start to finish. I remember being really shocked and saddened by his "death" as it happened, but it immediately hit me that it was, in fact, a fitting, ironic and damn near heartbreaking end for the character.... then Talking Dead came on, and like you, I knew he was alive.
why did they do this? IMO, they were testing the waters, seeing how people would react to Glen''s death. Would they lose a lot of viewers the very next week or would people accept losing a fan favorite.... We will obviously never know if Im right, but it does make some sense.

I totally agree, Glenn is one of my favorite characters, and I didn't want him to die, but I really liked the Nicholas arc and it felt like it really exemplified how Glenn is just too trusting. I believe Glenn would have survived on his own, but he chose to put his trust in Nicholas knowing the area which ends up being his fatal (or not) mistake. It was pretty cringey and immersion breaking for him to survive under the dumpster only to die after not really furthering his character in a satisfying way.

They could have done a tribute to Glenn with someone else dying like he does in the comics, set them up as a valuable character. It felt like such a waste of time to bring him back because we all knew Negan was coming, and we all knew what Negan does.

i agree its not even the fakeout death that bothers me really (ive gotten over it over time) but whats irritating is the fact that he doesnt serve any more real purpose to the story afterwards like you said. in fact, his remaining time alive did nothing but make his death more tragic by having him break his moral code and kill somebody before getting done in himself. however i thought he was already aware that he was going to be a dad? i could be wrong but didnt he know since that one flashback when he alludes to Maggie being pregnant?

Yes, I completely agree the fake out death was so unnecessary. It took away from when he actually died. I felt this episode continuing the previous episode wasn’t done well. They could’ve just shown how the Alexandrians weren’t really prepared for the outside world. And show the Ricks group come back with just Heath and Scott. They would tell the Alexandrians what happened. This would show them that they need to learn from Rick and his group.

I’m not mad that Gleen died to Negan.
I’m mad that they pulling the “subverting expectation” move by killing Abraham first and THEN killing Gleen.
Kinda F***ed up that they put the human life, and not even that but the life of a beloved secondary character. On a scale of who’s death mattered more.
Negan only killed Gleen in the comics and left everyone devastated.
If Show Negan only killed Abraham and the rest of the group moved on with their day it would paint Rick’s group as a bunch of monsters!

  • @quakywacky8048

Ultimately, Glenn should've either gone one of three paths
    1. He dies in the Dumpster, the main moral compass of the core group lost from his own belief in others
    2. The dumpster scene never happens and he dies in the line up
    3. He survives the line up and we see how he is tested during the war.
Personally understand how him dying in this episode would've probably worked out better for the show and fits the story and characters and it would've made Abraham's death more impactful rather than how it was overshadowed by the season 1 character

  • @Arcanelake98

This was the beginning of the end for me. we all basically mourned losing Glenn after the episode was over, even with Talking Dead being “grief counseling”, then to just magically allow him to survive in the most unbelievable scenario made me realize the writers only are aiming for viewership, not a good story. The walkers had been so little of a threat to the main group up until this point, so to have one of the most beloved characters go out the way he was brought in would have been pretty poetic. Glenn’s real death was the nail in the coffin for me. The show had become just shock value and it was an exhausting and bleak experience even tuning in every week.

I hope there’s a point where you discuss “The Grove”. Obviously the meme is the part everyone remembers, but to me, it’s my favorite episode, despite basically being a spin off of sorts.
It manages to be so disturbing, so intense, despite the fact that there’s barely any gore, and almost the entire main cast isn’t there. The moral arguments, the realisation that Carol and Tyreese might only have that one option, all before the execution was so gripping, and so heart wrenching.
It hit me harder than any other episode, even with how much I liked characters like Glenn or Herschel.
And I think it almost being a one off ironically helped make it better, since you genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen, and you could honestly show it to someone who’s never seen the series, while still having the same impact. It was just, *so* ridiculously good in my opinion.

This episode brings me back to 8th grade. Seeing that episode and thinking my favourite character was dead. I was devastated. But a few days later I saw some behind the scenes pictures and I saw Glenn with Jesus (who hadn’t been introduced yet) and it gave me so much hope. Only for the next episode to be about Morgan and goat cheese man 😭. Then finally they reveal he’s alive. I’m over the moon! Until he actually dies..
In both situations, I’m devastated. But I think having that extra 3/4 of a season with him is well worth it. But I can’t help but think of the fake death scene being his last. The theories would be insane. About how Nicholas fell on top of Glenn and how Glenn could still be alive. On some Rick S9 shit where we don’t know if he’ll be back. But we all keep watching in case he does come back. and that would’ve been so cool to experience.

  • @ryanjameshansen

I remember watching this episode live and knowing as soon as talking dead came on that he was alive. Glenn was easily my first favorite character in the series especially from seasons 1-4. I knew he was alive, but I wanted so badly for him to be dead given the current circumstances. Cause the idea of my favorite series pulling this contrived fake out death gimmick was not a reality I wanted to face. In my head I feel like as the Lucille death is so sudden and there’s no proper goodbye for the character who gets the bat, this was really a way to give us a proper sendoff and closure for glenn while also giving us the sudden shock to the system that’s delivered later on. Still think the reasons behind it are cheap and to the shows detriment but there’s still some things peppered throughout I really appreciate here.

Basically signifying why the group falls apart like they do in the finale, because they even corrupted their own moral compass. Still, it’s a nice video and I’m not entirely opposed to your opinion! Well put and sorry your OG vid got age restricted.

I liked that you brought up Talking Dead not having Steven appear because that was literally the #1 reason for every WD list that said reasons Glenn isn’t dead. Another thing from what I remember there were also photo leaks showing him filming the back half a S6 which also spoiled that Jesus was gonna be introduced which had people theorizing that Jesus rescues Glenn. Definitely one of my favorite episodes but the takeout does hurt it because it felt insulting that the producers thought the fanbase would fall for it. One of the things people know with TWD is that when someone dies another person has to see it otherwise it would cause a loose end that they wouldn’t be able to resolve in a believable way
