Let's not just blame the British. The fact is that the British exploited the already existing divisions. Hindus and Muslims have had communal tensions, riots etc since hundreds of years. After the birth of Sikhism, there had been continuous issues between Sikhs and Muslims too. In fact, the very birth of the Khalsa Panth (the warrior sect in Sikhism) happened to fight against the tyranny of the Mughal rulers who would forcibly convert Hindus and Sikhs to Islam.
These are hard facts.. as much as we try to gloss over them and pin the blame solely on the British. The British were a imperial power, they were here to make profits and exploit. That's what they did to the best of their advantage.
I think the partition was ultimately good for India. If they had not separated, you would have been having communal riots every other day, also probably ongoing violent separatist movement.

Technically it may be correct to say that the Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu & Kashmir did not immediately accede either to India or Pakistan as on the date of Independence. As everyone is aware that the Princely States then existing were given the option either to join India or Pakistan or remain independent if they so desired. Hence it is wrong to say that just the State of Jammu & Kashmir did not join either of these newly born independent countries. It could have perhaps decided either way later or it could have remained independent. Hence in my view it is absolutely wrong to say that Kashmir was up for grabs by India or Pakistan or by both. Subsequent developments are too well known who the real aggressor was and which country the Maharaja acceded to finally. Let no one spread canards.

U r right dear Nadeem. It was not just cabinet mission plan. Muslims were denied their share of power repeatedly. First of all at the time of Nehru report. Secondly after 1937 ministries and lastly in cabinet mission proceedings Muslim league and British explanation of the draft was repudiated by Nehru and Congress. Muslim league was only left with one option; Federation of Pakistan. Sadly Britishers divided the Punjab, Kashmir and Bengal in most irresponsible manner. Credit goes to Gandhi and Suharwardi for keeping peace in Bengal. Discredit goes to Mountbatten, Menon and Patel/Nehru for occupying Kashmir and then backing off their promises at UN.

Mr. Sukumaran makes many good points in his speech! However, while his points are stylish they lack in substance.
Ms. Saeed did not advocate the re-unification of India and Pakistan. She just cited that partition was a bad plan based on a bad idea.
If both Pakistan and Bangladesh were peaceful and viable nations, their secession from India may make sense. Yet that is hardly the case. Bangladesh is not doing too badly but that is because it is surrounded by India and the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh allows India to take care of its external security, external trade, and its foreign policy needs.
Pakistan is bankrupt and is a total failed state. It too has secession issues as the people in the provinces of K.P., Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and POK no longer want to remain in Pakistan. Pakistan in its current form cannot go on like this forever. Eventually it will have to let India take over Gilgit-Baltistan, POK and its other territories, Afghanistan to take over K.P. province, Iran to take over Balochistan, and finally allow the provinces of Punjab and Sindh to become autonomous republics.
There really is no other way.

A country suffering terrorism from within, and a country on the path of economic revival and greatness. Truce is only possible if they are equals. I see misguided narrative in Pak, no focus on real issues, and no concrete development. Unless the people become more educated, and are willing to look beyond the religious context, and more towards social and economic development, these kind of settlements will have to wait.

All Muslims should go to Pakistan and Bangladesh in exchange for all non-Muslims of Pakistan and Bangladesh (East Pakistan before). When Pakistan was made for the Muslims only, there should not be any Muslims in India which should be only for the non-Muslims. That will also solve the Kashmir problem as the non-Muslims of Kalas, Chittral, Kafiristan, Hunza valleys can come to India and stay in the Indian part of Kashmir.

Maharaja NS Sarila, who was the ADC of the last three Vice-Roys of India wrote in his book that in 1934 the British had decided to create a separate country where the British Army would stay in case India would get independence. The British army would secure the route from SuezCanal to Australia and also they resist the entry of the Soviet Union in the Middle East. The British employed three agents Gandhi, Jinnah and Ambedkar io execute their plan. Gandhi refused to accomodate Fazal Ul Haq of Bengal, Allah Bux of Sindh, Sikander Hyat Khan of Punjab, Khan Abdul Gaffer Khan of NWFP and Khan of Kalat of Balochistan. Ambedkar was against the freedom of India always. Jinah was promoted by the British.Gandhi even in 1943 prepared a Partition Plan. He gladly accepted the British proposal without any opposition.

This guy calls himself educated, but comes from the leftish snowflake view. Does he even know Indian history?. No, Kashmir acceded to India, but Pakistan invaded. That is what is POK. Nehru created article 370 without an act of parliament, but to appease the people as a temporary measure. These people want to dictate history to appease everyone without understanding the foundations for this. Maybe many people should understand our own history, and realise Hindu, a geographical term, by the Persians, did not represent us. The British called us Hindoos. We were Vedic, and became Hindu after the British came. Indians really need to understand their history before we end up in wars that Abrahamic religion fought for centuries. We are a way of life, not a religion, That is why , Indian civilisation succeeded so long.

Every one often tend to believe that British created the divide between Sanatanis and Muslims to rule. While this is the result of the Muslims opting to follow Muslimhood (Califackth) over freedom struggle.
But British have done more damage to this land by creating divide within the Sanatanis. Macaulay is the architect and his inspiration was when he say entire Sanatani (basically the natives of this land) respected one Varna, who is Veda educated and a teacher, it gave him the idea to divide them. Until then there was no caste system rooted in the society that divided people. Only those who were considered (not known reason till date but am exploring) not following the then societal practices, were kept aside. This is bad now but do not know what they did/followed that they were kept out. Not an apologist nor trying to justify but want to find the truth behind it. As many of us believe, as followers of Adhi Sankara Acharya, there is a god in everyone.

Do not say there was no caste system in India before 1934 when McAuley went to India,.

    • @VVV-wx3ui

Before 18th century, literacy rate was 36% across India. Brahmins were only between 8-48% of the tutors rest of the tutors were non-brahmins. Your post shows your bias that was the result of propaganda for almost 300yrs. His arguments are at best - nonsensical! India wasn't partitioned because Hindus wanted Muslims out; it happened so because Muslims spilled blood for it. While partition was inevitable, it was so because an Abrahamaic, predatory faith could not and still cannot tolerate the existence, let alone domination over it, from denizens of another faith. And no, India and Pakistan are not in a death spiral. India marches on as Pakistan sinks further. What I regret is the loss of our territory; the loss of many members of her Muslim polity was the best consequence of partition for India and her future. India has perhaps progressed far more today because of this loss.
