- I've struck some Peter Allen gold!!! Here's the FULL video of Peter singing his touchingly beautiful song, "Tenterfield Saddler" from the TV special Peter Allen in Concert at the Sydney Opera House in 1977. Before this exquisite find, I've only seen the edited version of this performance from Peter Allen: The Boy from Oz documentary. I wish to thank fellow RUclipsr, Myrage, for allowing me to share this amazing video with you all! Please check out their awesome RUclips music video channel at: / @myrage9968 .
Originally written in 1972, "Tenterfield Saddler" is about three generations of Peter's family on his father's side. The song tells the story of his grandfather, George Harewell Woolnough (1884-1963) who worked as a saddler in Tenterfield, New South Wales, Australia, from 1908 until his retirement in 1960. The story then progresses to Peter's father, Richard John Woolnough (1916-1958) who was never the same after returning home from WWII after serving in the Australian Army and died of suicide by gunshot in 1958. The story concludes with Peter Richard Woolnough (1944-1992) who changed his last name to Allen and married a girl with an interesting face (Liza Minnelli).

RIP Peter Allen (February 10, 1944 - June 18, 1992), aged 48
You will be remembered as a legend.
🤗
A simply beautifully written & preformed song ... I am a bit of an old fart but this song gets to me. Every time I travel though Tenterfield I look out for the Saddler's shop ..makes one think.
Great comment!😀
Made music, sung songs at the top of his game that will be around forever
You got that right!
A GREAT thing just happened to me as I listened to this recording.........it is the ABSOLUTE PERFECT version that I listened to as a teenager in the 1970s.....listening to this concert which must have been broadcast for Australian listeners.....I have not been able to figure out which concert I may have listened to at that time, on that day. As all typical people back then, I had a cassette tape recorder with the old ribbon tapes. I recorded each song as it was played, including ALL the conversation, jokes and patter that Peter Allen gleamingly gave so generously to his audience. I listened to that tape for a thousand times. His patter was unbelievable. So open, humorous and innocently, blatantly, radiantly bold. I could just imagine him as a boy, he would have been the same. So I guess that as an adult he kept his inner child visible for all of us to love. I know that he received terrible discrimination as a young boy for his difference and his unique talents and style. I can only feel so proud that the world came to honour his unique differences and what he shared with us for such a short time. We must respect difference because it's the difference that makes the special and the unique, the bold and the amazing.
Thank you for your wonderful comment!🎶
Thank you for sharing ! He left us with some wonderful gifts !
OH SO TRUE. I AM SO GLAD I READ WHAT YOU WROTE.
@TheMusicMagicofPeterAllen Well written and so very true ,Peter Allen was such a talented gifted man, and Australia is the better for it. Thank you
So true, and Beautifully put!🥰 He was SUCH an INCREDIBLE Talent! Witty, Quick, and a little cheeky and naughty!🥰 Wish I had have been old enough to see him live before we lost him!😨 Went to Boy From Oz though, and loved it! Todd McKinney was Perfect and Brilliant in it!❤ Brought Peter back to the Stage!🥰👍
Peter Allen always makes me cry and he is not even living. The crying is with such wonderful joy. What a unique perfect talent who left us way too young. Nonetheless he left us with gold.
As always thanks to youtube for making this all possible. This presentation is the definition of quality!
This is pure solid gold entertainment!😃📀
I have listened to this song many times as i drive along country roads. It just makes the trip go by much more nicely. The guy was so talented. Thanks for the music. 😊
What a nice comment!🚗🎶
Just been watching different videos of Peter Allen. Forgotten how special he was.
Welcome to our club and enjoy his magical videos!😀
A really great song by a really great Australian musician that left us all way to soon.😢
You are so right.
I really get inspired by this song I wish they had performed it at the Sydney Olympics at either opening or closing ceremonies.
That would have been something!
If Peter Allen can turn the tragic death of his dad into a beautiful song, I think we can all find something good to do with our trauma. Corny, I know, but I believe it.
It's not corny at all. It's like the old saying of turning lemons into lemonade.🍋
Mum always played this in the car when we were kids. You just took me back thirty years! Thanks heaps!
Your mum had good taste in music!🎵😀
Brilliant. Bloody brilliant.
You got that right!👍😎
My favourite Peter Allen song. This is a perfect performance.
Thanks KayElle!!!😃
Fantastic composer, musician and performer. Definitely gone too soon. Tim Freedman said in a documentary about Australian music that, despite the time and place of his birth and upbringing, he made it through on talent and force of personality.
Nothing was going to stop him from doing what he wanted to do in life.
Years ago I took the New England Highway on a trip because of this song. Seeing the town and remembering Peter Allen at his finest puts the story in perspective. Thanks for posting this.
Great story! Thanks so much for sharing:)
Wow I feel I have just stepped into a Time Machine and it's taken me back to 1972. When I listen to this song it makes me cry because it reminds me of a time in my life that was less stressful. I miss you Peter Allen you were taken to soon. RIP.
Yes, life can be very stressful and it goes by so fast.
At the time he was active I didn’t pay too much notice but after living in the New England area twice over 2 decades and visiting Tenterfield I lament that I never went to see him. A legend in the true sense of the word that I hope won’t slip through the cracks of musical and cultural history.
At least you have gotten to Tenterfield. Thanks for your comment:)
I love Australiana now.. sounds strange to outsiders, but this now, for us.. this is as mind Destroying as it is therapeutic.
❤️
👍🇦🇺❤
He was huge talent
He certainly was!
Just so special, wish I could have seen him!
Me too!!!
I went to Peter's concert called "Up In One" on Broadway-a great night

It certainly is a beauty!

A great Aussie song.
It really is!
Peter Allen an icon would fit in so well even today made it to the top of Hollywood royalty marries Judy garlands daughter, lived next door to the Kennedy's in Hyannis Port and was gay. What a personality and amazing person he was. I hope generations take a look at his life remember him as an Australian always. 'song I still call Australia home's that's him ❤🏆👍🇦🇺
He knew Ethel Kennedy, but I don't think him and Liza had a place in Hyannis Port. They did have a small apartment in NYC.
@@TheMusicMagicofPeterAllen your right Judy Garland was a neighbour One time maybe Miami beach house ? But thankyou for your posts 👍🇦🇺
Thanks! 😀
Probably the only song I could never perform - it’s too moving and sad 😢
It is.
Except in this Song.... this guy was a musical genius with a heart for the outsider and irony. He could have been a sailor in a bigger sea.❤
What a wonderful comment!😃
GOD BLESS AUSTRALIA ALWAYS !!!

The late George woolnough
Worked on High Street
And lived on Manners
52 years he sat on his veranda
And made his saddles
And if you had questions
About sheep or flowers or dogs
You just ask the saddler
He lived without sin
They're building a library for him.
Time is a traveller
Tenterfield saddler turn your head
Ride again Jackaroo
Think I see kangaroo up ahead
The son of George woolnough
Went off and got married
And had a war baby
But something was wrong
And it's easier to drink then go crazy
And if there were questions about why
The end was so sad
Well George had no answers about why a son
Ever has need of a gun.
Time is a traveller
Tenterfield saddler turn your head
Ride again Jackaroo
Think i see kangaroo up ahead
The grandson of George
Has been all around the world
And lives no special place
Changed his last name
And he married a girl with an interesting face
He'd almost forgotten them both
Because in this life that he leads
There's nowhere for George
And his library
Or the son with his gun
To belong … except in this song.
Time is a traveller
Tenterfield saddler turn your head
Ride again Jackaroo
Think I see kangaroo up ahead
Time is a medler
Tenterfield saddler make your bed
Fly away cookatoo
Down on the ground emu up ahead
Time is a tale teller
Tenterfield saddler turn your head
Ride again Jackaroo
Think I see kangaroo up ahead
Thanks for the lyrics.
Married a girl with an interesting face...Liza
Gotta love Liza!👍
I wonder if Peter ever visited the library ?
Probably not.
I know guitar chords, but he's going places I don't understand.
That's the journey of it!

The last name was Woolnough.
@@TheMusicMagicofPeterAllen thanks for the correction:- Woolnough not Walnow.
@@Gyory_Peter_Tamas also, Peter’s father’s name was Richard John Woolnough. :)
