I used to love watching interviews of Wilt on TV. He was so likeable and smart. Also a real character at times in the best way. He was asked sometime in the mid 1990s: If you played today how many points would you average. He said: About 35 a game, but you have to remember I'm 55 years old.

Rookie year 37.6 pts per game. More than any player in history, to this day still. 2nd year 38.4, but the team still didn't go far. In the off-season coach makes remark to the press "Wilt needs to score 50 per game for us to get the championship". Next year he averages 50.4
The Warriors that year weren't too bad, they just weren't as good as the Celtics.. HOWEVER.. they DID take Boston to 7 games! The Warriors were basically young prime Wilt and an old Arizin who could still play well, with decent role players around them. Tom Gola, Tom Meschery, and Guy Rodgers were all decent. Rodgers was not a great scorer but a nice playmaker, and Gola sucked in the playoffs I'm not sure why. He might've gotten hurt though as he didn't play in every game. They got help from Meschery who played way better in the playoffs. Wilt and Arizin were excellent as always in playoff scoring. Still they couldn't beat Boston... but it was no cakewalk... It actually came down to game 7 of the finals!!

As a St.Louis Hawks fan, I watched from the stands twice as Wilt played against the Hawks, and each time saw him triple-teamed and fouled like crazy. He never complained, but I thought, "My God, look what they're doing to him!" Now I know he probably didn't even feel the fouls!
His greatest weakness was he wasn’t mean enough. If he cracked a few heads at the beginning of his career NOBODY would have ever messed with him. He definitely went out of his way to avoid confrontations possibly out of fear that he might kill someone if he really lost his temper.
He was too strong. He could lift Arnold off the ground with one hand and did lift 2 players at once. He dislocated someone's shoulder with one of his blocks. He backed off to not hurt people but he scared some of the players to death because of how strong he was. He could have killed them. Muhammed Ali didn't want to box him because he was too strong and Arnold considered him the strongest person he had ever met.

My favorite Wilt stats are 1. because of overtime, he averaged OVER 48 minutes per game, and 2. He never fouled out of a game. We had this thin-looking kid in my high school that had this crazy natural strength and speed. The first time we dragged him to the weight room he benched 270lbs. He could outrun anyone in the school. He never applies himself and is working a call center. I wish I could go back and encourage him the right way😓.
I remember watching Conan. There is a shot where Arnold and Wilt are lifting a stone door side by side. Arnold looked like a little kid next to Wilt. After his basketball career he played pro volleyball. His physic and muscle tone was unreal. Wilt was way ahead of anyone during that era and would still be today.

Hell, even Chamberlain's main nemesis, Russell, was three INCHES shorter than him. As was Reed. Thurmond was two inches shorter. Kareem was one of the only guys with height and ability the equal of Wilt but they didn't face off until Chamberlain was near the tail end of his career. What we think of as the modern NBA began somewhere around 1972, just about the time Wilt was retiring, so he never went up against modern comp like Kareem (and Jordan) faced their whole careers. People say Wilt _only_ won two championships without considering two things. The first is that he won two championships with two totally different teams in two separate decades. That's quite a feat on its own, and he carried both of those teams. The second is context. He played 7 series against Bill Russell and a roster of future HOFers. Of those 7 series, 4 went to game seven. Those 4 games were decided by a grand total of _NINE_ points. And those losses were not Wilt's fault. One game saw his team not pass to him for the entire second half. He touched the ball twice in that second half. In another game, he went out with an injury and the coach wouldn't put him back in. The coach was fired the next season for not putting in their best player at the end of game seven of the finals. In another, Wilt scored his team's final five points, including the shot to tie. Sam Jones threw up a deep shot and won. And the other game seven loss was Havlichek's famous steal, throw by a teammate to another teammate; Wilt was not given the ball. You cannot continue to blame him for these losses. If anything, he's the reason those games were so close to begin with.Wilt Chamberlain is the greatest basketball player of all time, and the argument against that is he only won two championships? That's absurd. Some guys never won any.

Many of the blocks back then would be goaltending today. Just watch the films, many of Wilt's (and Bill's) blocks were shots that were on the way down and that would have been counted as 2pts today. I went to Boston Garden about a dozen times to watch Wilt, from 1966 to '69. Two of many memories; During pregame warm-ups Wilt would hit 75 to 80% of set shots from 30 to 35 ft. No joke, after a few times I would keep track during the warm ups. Also, during introductions, he got a bigger ovation than any Celtic except Russell. This included guys like Sam Jones and John Havlicek. ( Of course, once the game started........

The Warriors that year weren't too bad, they just weren't as good as the Celtics.. HOWEVER.. they DID take Boston to 7 games! The Warriors were basically young prime Wilt and an old Arizin who could still play well, with decent role players around them. Tom Gola, Tom Meschery, and Guy Rodgers were all decent. Rodgers was not a great scorer but a nice playmaker, and Gola sucked in the playoffs I'm not sure why. He might've gotten hurt though as he didn't play in every game. They got help from Meschery who played way better in the playoffs. Wilt and Arizin were excellent as always in playoff scoring. Still they couldn't beat Boston... but it was no cakewalk... It actually came down to game 7 of the finals!!

As a St.Louis Hawks fan, I watched from the stands twice as Wilt played against the Hawks, and each time saw him triple-teamed and fouled like crazy. He never complained, but I thought, "My God, look what they're doing to him!" Now I know he probably didn't even feel the fouls!
I think he did. He talked about quitting after his first season. He got heat on the court, from the fans, and especially from the press.
His greatest weakness was he wasn’t mean enough. If he cracked a few heads at the beginning of his career NOBODY would have ever messed with him. He definitely went out of his way to avoid confrontations possibly out of fear that he might kill someone if he really lost his temper.
He was too strong. He could lift Arnold off the ground with one hand and did lift 2 players at once. He dislocated someone's shoulder with one of his blocks. He backed off to not hurt people but he scared some of the players to death because of how strong he was. He could have killed them. Muhammed Ali didn't want to box him because he was too strong and Arnold considered him the strongest person he had ever met.

Hell, even Chamberlain's main nemesis, Russell, was three INCHES shorter than him. As was Reed. Thurmond was two inches shorter. Kareem was one of the only guys with height and ability the equal of Wilt but they didn't face off until Chamberlain was near the tail end of his career. People say Wilt _only_ won two championships without considering two things. The first is that he won two championships with two totally different teams in two separate decades. That's quite a feat on its own, and he carried both of those teams. The second is context. He played 7 series against Bill Russell and a roster of future HOFers. Of those 7 series, 4 went to game seven. Those 4 games were decided by a grand total of _NINE_ points. And those losses were not Wilt's fault. One game saw his team not pass to him for the entire second half. He touched the ball twice in that second half. In another game, he went out with an injury and the coach wouldn't put him back in. The coach was fired the next season for not putting in their best player at the end of game seven of the finals. In another, Wilt scored his team's final five points, including the shot to tie. Go and watch that final minutes and you'll see, how Wilt scored the final points to put his team only 1 point behind Boston, then he stole the ball to Bill Russell, and then one of his teammates lost the Ball to Havlicek.

Imagine the Cavs after Warriors got Durant; no matter how good LeBron was, he couldn't outscore perhaps the three best shooters of all time. Wilt was in a similar situation, but with worse help. Wilt would have had more than his 4 mvps as well, if MVPs were given before playoffs. In fact, Bill Russell got the MVP the season Wilt averaged 50.4 ppg. If Finals MVP was a thing, Wilt would have had thr most MVPs of all time, and Bill Russell would have had like 11 finals MVPs but 0 regular season MVPs.

You could look at the Russell/Wilt thing differently. You could argue that Wilt consistently pressed superior Celtics TEAMS to the brink over and over again. Wilt was so good that everything he did that fell short of perfect was counted against him. I'm starting a team, he'd definitely be my first pick.

Many of the blocks back then would be goaltending today. Just watch the films, many of Wilt's (and Bill's) blocks were shots that were on the way down and that would have been counted as 2pts today.
They were both great, of course, but if you went back and charted their blocks, many of them would not be blocks.

I went to Boston Garden about a dozen times to watch Wilt,
from 1966 to '69.
Two of many memories;
During pregame warm-ups Wilt would hit 75 to 80% of set
shots from 30 to 35 ft. No joke, after a few times I would
keep track during the warm ups.
Also, during introductions, he got a bigger ovation than any
Celtic except Russell. This included guys like Sam Jones and
