    My M1 iPad Pro IS my day to day device, at work and also for personal use. It has been my “laptop replacement” for quite some time. I have adapted my work flow to iPadOS which allows me to focus very well on the task at hand. BUT, having said that, I’m praying that version 16 will give me even better experience with external display support and better multitasking (a Pro “mode” maybe?) 🙏

    I am big big fan of M1 iPad pro, and I use it alot everyday, in fact more than any other device I ever had. But you simply can't replace it as desktop, theres too many limitations on it, namely:
    - productivity (due to limiting apps available)
    - multitasking (due to IOS constraint)
    - file management (due to IOS constraint)
    - AAA gaming (due to apple products constraint)
    But aside from those, iPad pro is really handy in my daily use, such as sketching concepts, markup ideas/comments, taking notes, smooth web surfing experience, high portability to do light productive work, very handy device for work meetings, readings, casual mobile gaming, watching movies on bed/sofa/anywhere etc. Nothing beats it n those aspects. But you still can't replace it as desktop - it is not designed for heavy duty use, and it is simply a powerful device for casual use at anywhere.

    • @juanalvarado7794

      Hi portability? When you add the magic keyboard this things is heavier and less productive than and actual Mack book Air.

    I really think replacing your pc/MacBook with a iPad use very contextual. me, for example, can easily replace all my MacBook usage with an iPad or even my mobile phone. I don't have any professional use for a desktop experience and now-a-days most sites and apps allow you to do a lot on a mobile device. tbh most of the time I actually need to do some document typing or fill out forms, I just do on my phone anyway since its there with me 24/7. multitasking on a desktop is still unmatched though. I also think you don't even need an iPad Pro or M1 iPad to replace your laptop either, the base level iPad is still really good. keyboard support and gen 1 Apple Pencil. the pro line up is definitely a luxury device

    I held off on the iPad Pro until 2020, then I took the dive. 3 months later I sold my MBP. I still have a Mac mini on my desk, however this gets used only for storage with my back up system. Aside from everyday use I use it for audio creation and photo editing. I was able to achieve thus pretty simply actually, just with a Magic Keyboard and a USB C dock. Simply lovely.

    I have a powerful gaming PC with a huge monitor. After lots of contemplation, I got the M2 iPad Pro 12.9 with the Magic Keyboard and the Pencil. I’m so happy I got it over the M2 Mac Air. I use it more than my computer now. Just wish the keyboard had Function Keys…

    I've been using my 12" iPad for half a year now as my laptop (I have the attachable keyboard, would recommend). Great battery life, everything's snappy and fast, and with the laptop keyboard attachment (expensive but worth it), I can write on the thing, answer emails and use spreadsheets. It's capable of replacing a desktop for most kinds of work, and I will be creating an iPad desktop setup once I get the square footage.

  • @BimoNuksmo
    @BimoNuksmo 2 года назад +4

    I gave up my iPad Pro as main computer after 18 months. Life's so much easier and more productive after I start using a Mac mini. Don't have to worry about constantly plugging in when working for hours on desktop.
    But this is me working 90% on desk. When mobile, I still use my iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard case.
    But really the greatest limitation is the iPad OS. Sure I mastered Lumafusion, Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, and other "pro" creative iPad apps with low to moderate learning curves. But it's just not on par with the desktop counterparts. It gets the job done sometimes, sometimes just slowing you down. I could write tons more problems like the inferior file management, sub par multitasking, lack of RAM optimization, and so on. iPad is just a great tablet. No where near desktop replacement. Unless you can manage your expectation and adapt your workflow to it.

    • @fernandosilva
      @fernandosilva  2 года назад +1

      you hit it perfectly with the last point. Manage expectations haha. I will say that I am stubborn and i force myself to go for the ipad. But im hoping we get some sort of MacOS lite or something to better our experience

    Thank you, this was what I was looking for. Unfortunately I feel like you use very little of the video to showcase your daily work on it. Like take some scenarios and show the limitations and how you get around it. Like writing in Word and wanting full screen and working fully with mouse and keyboard or like playing games or streaming Geforce NOW or something. Also I don't quite get why you would want the iPad right next to your monitor like that. If it worked as an extension then great, but right now you have a smaller mirrored display with a large cable sticking out of the side... I would just lay it flat like when you've docked your laptop to a full desktop setup and don't need it.

    If you already own the M1 iPad Pro I suppose this is a fairly decent option but if you're in the market to buy a device you'd be silly to spend more for the iPad then say the MBA. That air is not only designed for monitor support with a desktop OS it's actually cheaper than the iPad.

    Fernando! Great video. I am waiting my iPad Pro 2021 because discovering that the usual websites I used for teaching can be displayed as a desktop version in the safari app, I’m about to change the game. I tried it out on my iPad mini 4 and was amazed by the fact that apple took time to turn the setup into an actual desktop version. I know that the iPad Pro will be the powerhouse in my classroom, especially when I connect it to the Promethean board.

    Biggest challenge for me with trying to use M1 iPad Pro as only computer is lack of proper external monitor support. I’d say a close 2nd would be continued improvement to multitasking features. Hopefully iOS16 will improve both of those areas!

    Since my son stole my 2019 15” MBP (and to be fair he is welcome to it) I have been using my 11” iPad Pro more and more. The only issue I have is full screen support. I have a ultra wide monitor and it just looks ridiculous. For me to fully embrace I would need full screen (like others have said I find shiftscreen too restrictive). Other than that I have work’s windows 🤮 machine. I would like someone to release a vesa mount for the iPad as I use monitor arms for my monitor and laptop to keep the desk clear. Great videos, keep up the good work.

    Yeah as a software engineer who works mostly with node and some frameworks now, this was not possible. The only way I could use the ipad "natively" was to connect is to my raspberry pi where the connection wasn't through some VM like AWS or some other provider and run a lot of the applications that way through the blink app. However, by the time you do all that set up, you might as well use a laptop which sucks because I love how lightweight and small the ipad is compared to my macbook pro.

    i been using my ipad pro 2018 as my only device for about a year and im quite happy with it but there is some limitation for pro user also for users who used to using a pc
    1- the browser experience is still limited and one of the reasons why is people used to bigger screen and also pc browser are waaay better
    2- for a power user you probably gonna have a a keyboard and mouse/trackpad which makes it a laptop/pc aka … you just repeating yourself but with another OS
    ….
    my idea here is ipad/mobile apps is the future so im gonna go all in and just accept it
    also its an echo-system world now and i choice ios

    iPad Pro 2018 11 inch was my laptop replacement for 2 years before my businesses really took off. It rapidly became apparent that it simply wasn’t up to the job of doing a variety of business / data analysis tasks. Worse still, I used my girlfriend’s Microsoft Surface Pro 8 for a week while she was sick and I realised that my days with the iPad were over. The Microsoft device is such a better all-rounder, especially for work and professional use.
    I am absolutely convinced people are only using iPad as their soul computer because they are forcing themselves to do so. That was certainly the case with me and it is just stupidity.
    The problems with the iPad Pro are as follows:
    1. It is horrible working with text as cursor control is so fiddly, even with a mouse. Working with Google docs in the Safari browser is awful.
    2. Despite Apple telling us that Safari is a desktop class browser, it simply doesn’t function like one. The strange aspect ratio of the iPad means that sections of websites are cut off. Some websites just do not load properly. Often menus don’t function as they should do either.
    3. Video conferencing such as zoom is a nightmare on iPad Pro because you cannot do other tasks at the same time. It’s pretty appalling.
    4. Microsoft Excel on iPad Pro is pretty much the worst computer experience I’ve ever had in my life. Microsoft Excel is so important to me yet it is almost laughable trying to use it on iPad.
    5. The constant reloading of Web browser tabs is absolutely infuriating especially when it means losing content that hasn’t saved.
    6. Samsung and Microsoft have highlighted just how bad external display support is on iPad. How can a professional device not connect to an external monitor properly? It is the year 2022, don’t Apple realise this? I don’t want 1980s style 4:3 ratios.
    There are many more irritating problems that I hadn’t actually realised simply because I had forgotten how flexible working on a proper operating system was. I simply cannot see myself purchasing another iPad in the future unless iPadOS changes dramatically. It reminds me of Fisher-Price toys for children in the 1980s.

      I really like your comment. I have a surface laptop and have used the surface laptop as my go to work device. I have the 2018 ipad pro and have tried to use it with magic keyboards and such. It is still not up to par. I think it is still best as a second device rather than being a primary device. Taking notes, reading pdfs and such.

    • @theflyingscott1
      @theflyingscott1 2 года назад +1

      @@muhammadbinmohamedamin2179 Cheers for the comment. Yes you are correct. iPad is an excellent tablet. Probably the best tablet experience there is. But in my opinion, it is a terrible computer experience. One of the worst I’ve ever had. I am more productive on a $300 Chromebook.
      I think RUclipsrs would be far more helpful to people if they were to recommend investing hard-earned money in a laptop like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. Then purchasing the basic $300 iPad to complement it for any sketching or artwork required, especially if you are running a business.
      I need to sketch diagrams for client work that I do and so I do use an iPad for that purpose. But that is the only area where it trumps a laptop.
      If people only want one device, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is easily the best one. If people really must be in the Apple ecosystem, then a MacBook Air and a $300 iPad, with pencil, is the way to go.

    Hey Fernando, good video! I sold my mac two months ago and I’ve been trying to implement my iPad as my main device. I work as a marketing manager and I had some issues that are pushing me to buy a mac again. Basically, some apps they log out, so when I’m filling my KPIs in my google spread sheet sometimes it logs out and I have to enter again. Moreover, the app for iPad doesn’t allow many things like conditional format, or even I’ve experienced some shorcuts are not working well and this all affects my flow. Also, some apps are just not available like the Google Ads Editor. I leave this here for marketers since according to the iPad capabilites it’s just a perfect fit but not in terms of the workflow. Btw, my iPad is not the pro one and I don’t have any issues on speed or performance

Though my use-case is obviously easier with the iPad than windows laptops as i generally only create 3D models for products and do schoolwork, i can tell it’s an amazing upgrade in all forms. So yeah I’d say you could recommend this with the only upgrade being software as to allow for external displays.

    1. The angle of your computer is wrong. It should be tilted backwards, 15°. When you hold a book, how do you hold it?
    2. You keyboard angle is wrong. That angle will create an upward v shape with your wrist. Not good. Wrist should be flat when typing. Keep keyboard flat, wrist height half inch above keyboard height.

    Was feeling a disconnect during this video. This felt more like a “My Desk / Studio Setup” video than a “How the iPad can be your only device” video.
    Also: I’m not sure your videos are benefiting from being edited this way. Your jump cuts were super sloppy and choppy, lacked a flow. Am wondering if this is because of the limitations of iPad editing apps.

    @ 2.00. How many people going to throw up the hand sign. I see alot of youtubers that are big doing it and i understand why which i wont go into but its sad and its not the OK sign. Everyone i seen and mentioned this in their comments gets quiet and has no response and i know why. But thats industry for you. Certain things you have to do/move to stay connected. I could be wrong but i doubt it as im seeing more and more people do this @ random in a video. Do they really know what they putting up when doing that? Prob not

    iPad lineup has a lousy file manager. Not easy to save to different folders. That’s my biggest complaint. Also, screen size is too small for me. I still use my 27” iMac when at home for most things. At my age, it’s hard to learn new ways of doing things. I do use it for watching RUclips channels similar to yours. And I use it for learning music. But again, I don’t find the iPad Pro that user friendly. One really has to approach it differently than the Mac lineup.

    I would really recommend you to try out Shadow! It's a Windows cloud PC that costs $30 per month. And it works perfectly on the iPad even with DUAL monitor support and Mouse and Keyboard Support! So you can use your iPad screen AND external Display at the same time with Windows. For me this has completely replaced my Windows gaming PC. I can now just plug in my iPad and use a REAL windows PC! I would really appreciate it if you could make a Video on it. I saw your Video on the Microsoft PC subscription Service, but Shadow is cheaper, much more powerful and has a much better remote connection.

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy 2 года назад +1

      Honestly you can have cheaper and more powerful solutions with remote desktop. I got a used desktop for $400 with quad core i7, 16GB RAM (more than the 12GB of shadow) and 256GB SSD and I can remote on if for free from iPad with jump desktop (cheap one time puchase on iPad), including on an external monitor. And I can upgrade, contrary to shadow, and indeed I have upgraded it to 32GB for $80, added a 6TB HHD for $120 and an RTX 2070 super for 350. Over 3 years with shadow I'd have spent more than the upgraded desktop for a much less capable device.

    • @crafter89
      @crafter89 2 года назад +1

      @@_Digitalguy I have Jump Desktop, too. But for me it doesn't work nearly as smooth as Shadow. Probably it's just because the Windows Laptop I remote into isn't pretty fast. That was also the main reason why I bought Shadow. It's a good solution if you only have an iPad and no PC or a really slow PC.

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy 2 года назад +1

      @@crafter89 of course, in your situation Shadow will work better. In my situation my pc is better than shadow... It's the difference between buying and renting. If you can find a desktop pc at a decent price over a few years it's cheaper than shadow (even assuming that shadow does not increase prices again in the future). Renting is always more expensive over the long run, but can be convient short term. For me the fact that i can add more storage etc. is important, as I also use this pc as a plex server et for other things. Plus I can use more than one monitor at home. And recently I have found a solution that works even better than remote desktop when at home and it's the one I mainly use now, but it only works with Android tablets, not iPads

    I‘ve tried for 3 months to use IPP 12.9 + MKB and it‘s practically impossible if you do anything else than media consumption. MS Office is way worse plus you can‘t really work with multiple documents, file management is utter garbage, fucking audio pauses every time there is some video embedded on a webpage, you can‘t change keyboard language if you have MKB in other language and many many more. I use my IPP now only for watching YT, Netflix and light browsing. Because with heavy browsing (researching some topic using many tabs) it keeps reloading tabs and background apps all the time which is infuriating. And don't get me started with external display support...

  • @brianradwanski6544

    Love the device but it is not a replacement. No real way to use a usb serial console with it…some hacks but nothing robust. Stuff like zoom has limitations. No ability to request remote control of others. No ability to be remotely controlled by others. pretty sure is the same for the other group collaboration stuff not named FaceTime. No ability to format flash drives or write ISO images to a raw device. Basically for this to really be a replacement as close as you get is Tech Craft’s raspberry pi hack…which is awesome but uses linux to work around the limitations. I will say Blink Shell is amazing. I think it depends on what you’re doing. For System administration the ipad is not a replacement.

    First, the fact that we need to run the apps through Shiftscreen is the proof that iPad Pro is not worthy Laptop / Macbook replacement. apps like Lumafusion is the one the apps that can make an iPad actualy feel pro. But that Shiftscreen doesn't support full screen on Lumafusion
    second, all those accecories just so you can use the iPad Pro as a fully functional laptop replacement is just dumb. how much more you need to spend just so you can have a laptop replacement.
    Softwarewise? the iPad just not ready.
    Moneywise? to get an iPad as laptop replacement is just a bad investment.
    an iPad is an iPad, treat it as it is.
