I built a Janick Gers tribute guitar

  • I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan and I've wanted to own a black Fender Stratocaster with Duncan JB Jr. pickups like the one played by Janick Gers for pretty much as long as I've been into Maiden. As Fender doesn't make a production model, I set about obtaining the various parts and assembling them to my specifications. This video documents the building process.
    If guitar tech talk isn't your cup of tea, you can skip to a demo of the guitar at 10:02, featuring a playthrough of 'Sign of the Cross'.
    DISCLAIMER: This video doesn't aim to be a precise step-by-step guide, but if you're after some tips on building your own Janick Strat, please do add a comment and I'll respond as soon as possible.

    Late to the comments here but can I say bloody amazing job Sir, I have been a Maiden fan since unbelievably being taken to see them in 1992 at Donnington... I was 5 years old !!!!
    And watching Janick it what made me pick up the guitar and I have never looked back !!!! It's about bloody time he had his own signature model

    Janick is an awesome guitarist and you definite nailed the build.
    I like how you test the guitar with " sign of the cross" and I want to seen "the ghost of navigator" being played on this guitar. It has my favourite solo performed by janick:)

    It's absolutely a disgrace on Fender not to release a Janick Gers signature especially seeing as Dave Murray, Steve Harris and Adrien Smith (Jackson are a Fender company) all have signatures.

    Be sure to break the guitar a little bit on the side, just to be excactly the same.

    • @alexmarkham

      Indeed, if you're wanting to go all out. I'm not a big fan of relicing myself. I remember when his guitar didn't have that entire corner of the finish missing!

    I'm a Janick's fan too, i have a black Fender guitar, i'm going to do the same as you to make my guitar look like the Janick Gers guitar.

  • @SamPlaysBass49

    Well done. Janick's Strats have some important details. The fact that he is NOT using a Floyd actually allows him to bend behind behind the nut (which he does in Fear of the Dark) and do a few of his other tricks. Good pickup choices too. Janick is an endorser of Sandberg Guitars, but usually only plays his Sandberg doing the Trooper.
    I have a feeling at some point you're gonna upgrade to the JB Jr's though ;)

    Great video! I built a Dave Murray black 57 copy and love it. I used all name brand parts including a JMT nitro body, DiMarzio pups, original floyd rose etc. Its far superior and more accurate than the Fender that goes for 2k plus!
    As far as Jannick, he absolutly deserves one. Jannick is like that soldier that is loayal to the end. Never really gets the limelight as far as solos etc with a few exceptions but is in top form every show and plays with the enthusaisim of a 20 year old. I love what you did and plan of doing one as well! Thanks for sharing!

    • @alexmarkham
      @alexmarkham  7 лет назад +1

      Cheers! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
      I'd be very intrigued to see your guitar. I felt the same way about that old signature model that Fender put out. I'm going to build my own Davey Strat at some point, but it absolutely needs a Floyd or a Kahler. That's where the Fender falls short for me (well, that and the price).
      Aye, Jan's a trooper. He's responsible for some great co-writes too. I love all the celtic influences in his playing. Ade Smith's my guitar hero though, so he's next on my list. I've got a bunch of Charvel parts that I'm going to turn into an 80s-spec Jackson San Dimas. Watch this space!

    I've been an Iron Maiden fan for 34 years (I'm old) and I first saw them on their World Slavery Tour in 1985...my point, I've never seen any Maiden fan who favors Janick Gers over Adrian Smith or Dave Murray. I'm a Dave Murray guy, but also dig Smith/Gers...The Trooper rif made me want to pick up the Guitar, which took 33 years to actually happen. Great job on the Gertar....!

    • @alexmarkham
      @alexmarkham  6 лет назад +5

      I haven't come across many myself. Adrian Smith's my favourite, but Jan gets a lot of stick that he doesn't deserve. I got into Maiden in the 90s and so much of the stuff from that period and onwards benefits hugely from his contributions! Thanks for the kind words about the guitar!

    • @Ginger33333
      @Ginger33333 6 лет назад +4

      I favour Janick, personally he's my favourite of the trio. So now you've found a Maiden fan (of 27 years) that picks Janick over Dave and Adrian! :-)
      For what it's worth I'm a HUGE fan of his work on Bruce's solo work as well, it's well worth a listen if you're not familiar with it.

    • @alexmarkham
      @alexmarkham  6 лет назад

      Matthew Fountain Aye he's great on Tattooed Millionaire. Some of his best work. I'm more a fan of later Bruce with Roy Z and Adrian, but there's some killer stuff on that album (the lead part on Born in '58, for a start).

    • @DBSG1976
      @DBSG1976 6 лет назад +1

      Matthew Fountain Wow, I am truly amazed to find someone who places Janick over Dave/Adrian. I've been around numerous guitar players and Maiden fans over the many years I've followed the band; you are the only fan to place him first. I loved his work on "Tattooed Millionaire", with his interpretation of "All The Young Dudes" as a highlight of his guitar work on that album. I wanted to learn that song as quickly as possible, of course I don't play like Yanick, but not many can. I think it's very cool that you appreciate the member of that band who frankly doesn't get the credit that he should. Plus he plays Strats...you can never go wrong with that, cheers!

    • @DBSG1976
      @DBSG1976 6 лет назад

      James Thwaite I love Janick's energy on stage. I saw him for the first time on the "No Prayer for the Road" tour and enjoyed his playing/stage presence. Janick has a style all his own and though I missed Adrian, he was a worthy successor. I have not been paying enough attention to his contributions to the band. I have to revist some of the newer Maiden material and appreciate Janick's musical voice. And of course, Janick rocks Strats!

    Very nice job, and it sounds good too!
    Are you going to relic it so it looks like the one he uses now, or are you going to keep it like this?
    If I where to do something like this, I think I would just get myself either a high level Squier in black, or a Mexico Standard in black and go from there :)

    • @alexmarkham
      @alexmarkham  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you! I'm planning on keeping it in good nick, but who knows what will happen. I've taken enough chunks out of my guitars over the years, despite trying my best to keep them in pristine condition.
      There's a really nice body on the Squier Vintage Modified 70s Strat. Pair that with an MIM neck, a white pickguard and some JB Jrs and you're on to a winner!

      Alex Markham thanks for your answer. I will do the same thing on my black stratocaster made in Japan 93'. I will install 2 JB jr and a Seymour Duncan SSL-2 i think in the middle. I can't do exactly the same guitar of mr Gers because my guitar have a mapple neck but it's not my goal ! I just want a good guitar. Here they are - www.aliexpress.com/item/Sell-Free-Shipping-low-noise-dual-coil-single-guitar-pickup-black-white-color-single-coil-guitar/32455777845.html. After using them for a while, I've decided that I much prefer the neck position. You can get a decent enough tone from the bridge by adjusting the pole heights, but the sustain isn't amazing. A decent preamp will help though.

    That’s easy enuff ... go to your local scrapyard buy a 50 year old Stratocaster that’s falling apart ... then get a big long strap so when your on stage you can dance about like an idiot an pretend your a great guitarist with a poor tone and then u can ruin every iron maiden solo cos you don’t know how to play them an then you can pretend to be as good as Adrian or Dave when it’s clear to see you really aren’t... that’s how u build a Janick guitar
