As obscure as it probably is in Japan, I think this game got an outsize playerbase in the emulation scene because it was one of those early (1998-ish) fan translations, and the sheer novelty of playing RPGs that never came out in NA was enough. I remember liking it well enough when I played it back then aged 13 or 14 and got pretty far in it, but every attempt playing it since then has been pretty meh?
I discovered the Villgust series on emulation 10+ years ago. Watch the anime and played both games, all I remembered about it was the absurdly high stat values of the character in the SNES game.
The thing i like about Villgust is that it tries something different. The combat system reminded me of a slightly more interesting Mashin Hero Wataru Gaiden. RPGs on the Famicom were so stuck on Dragon Quest, that anything breaking that mold deserves a second look. I liked this one.
7:18 I think they have a term for that... :P I do find the concept of the gashapon miniatures and different weapon and armor sets kind of a neat idea! (like the next level of the little Battle Beasts figures) as for the game, seems like an okay dragon quest-like except the weird battle system and those issues with the dungeons. had not heard of this one!
Because the game is so rare, I can't really get a good look at what's inside to see if that 8000 yen price tag was even a little justified back then. It's battery back-up with an MMC3 (most likely,) but the file size is a little over 3 megabits... like, just a little! The box is also small and standard with no extras inside. Hell, even if they included one tiny figure that might've justified the price.
Well, this game is at least better than the Super Famicom RPG that's as dull as dishwater. I played through it once. It is okay, if very simple; I didn't find it offensively bad or anything, but it won't leave you in awe either. Not much to say about it, otherwise, besides the fact that it has a 'horrible' fan-translation from the late 90s. I hope there's an updated version, because that old one was absolutely atrocious. 🙃
@@thomasffrench3639??? I consider Sweet Home to be excellent, also, Mother 1 is better than Earthbound and Megami Tensei 2 is better than the snes Shin series. Those generalizations aren't well thought out.
@@mushihimesarna728 that’s the point. I’ve seen people say that 8-but RPGs aren’t worth playing and they didn’t get good until the SNES era. I’m sick of that attitude. I haven’t played those games you mentioned, but I have a feeling I would agree with them. Although I have played the Mother games and Earthbound is better than Mother 1 imo.
@@thomasffrench3639 yeah. There's a strong case for Punch Out, Castlevania 3 and Captain Tsubasa 2... Some people even consider Mario 3 to be better than World. There's a cult of the New, and there's also a cult of the Newer.
Yeah, this game is pretty embarassing, even if it starts like a promising one for you. Marius summed that up perfectly. P.S. Mashin Eyuuden Wataru Gaiden is a better game overall, go play it for that random encounters in ARPG itch 😊

Now I want figures I can outfit with RPG equipment of my choosing. But I'm opposed to the whole random thing.

Cool fighting mechanics its understandable english friendly can play to anyone without translate unlike dragon quest 😅

There's a new one from 2018.
But how is the Famicom RPG better? It’s impossible for an 8-bit RPG to be good. And Super Famicom RPGs are the only JRPGs worth playing.

Does Japan not have Trademark violation lawsuits ? If they did that "one letter off" thing here they'd get suuuuued.
I feel they have weird and inconsistent IP ideals.
Shush and drink your malk. :-P

I think Rnd played that one and liked it a lot.
