Sure would have loved to see at least one clip of the most beloved running back in the history of Alabama....Johnny "The Italian Stallion" Musso ....Never forget Musso breaking loose after having his tear away jersey torn off and dashing into the endzone against Auburn... the endzone being pelted with oranges as the fans celebrated Alabama heading to the Orange Bowl to play for yet another national title. The University of Alabama, the team with the most storied and richest tradition in college football history.

I know there's very little actual game footage to use of him, but Johnny Musso should have been on the list. He should've won the Heisman trophy in 1971 over Pat Sullivan- but Bear Bryant refused to do "Heisman campaigns" for his teams. He considered individual awards insults to the other 21 guys on the field. Back then you needed Heisman campaigns to win the award because voters didn't have film of every game to look at and compare. All they had were 1 or 2 nationally televised games a year, and 10 box score stats from newspapers to use. It was up to the school to fund these campaigns and send out their own game tape to the Downtown Heisman Athletic Club for consideration. But sadly, Coach Bryant didn't believe in it. He thought his personal endorsement of a player during press conferences and interviews should be good enough for those people. Johnny Musso was the real deal back in the day. He was the best player in America in the early '70s. He was the "Italian Stallion" long before Sylvester Stallone ever stole the name for his Rocky Balbo character!

Not a single season in the past, present, or future that Johnny Musso wouldn't be deserving of the respect that he had during his playing days. Oh, and he could block as well as he could run. To this day, my favorite Bama tailback. He would fall, crawl, claw, twist, and no matter how hard he was hit, his head always faced the goal line at the end of the play. If you don't know much about Musso, you owe it to yourself to dig up some old games from 69, 70, and 71.

Bear Bryant had some good running backs. They just didn't get the stats because of the wishbone and sharing the carries.

Bama has had too many great RBs to count over the last 5 decades - Musso, Ogilvie, Humphrey, Stacy, Alexander, Ingram, Lacey, etc. But if I'm going into OT of a national championship game and had to pick only one RB, I'm picking Derrick Henry 10/10 times. It took him a step to get going, but he could have 40 carries, bludgeon a 4th quarter defense to death, and then run circles around the corpses.

Roy Upchurch had some fantastic hands for a running back. I also believe that the runs against Arkansas as a freshman and the big "stutter step run" against Ole Miss were THE 2 runs that got Trent drafted. Everyone knows how he flaked out in the NFL, but I hated it for him. He's one of those like Tebow that will go down as one of the all-time greatest college players with little to no pro career.

    3.Mark Ingram
    2.Shaun Alexander
    1.Derrick Henry

I am a rather young fan and didnt have the pleasure of seeing Bobby Humphrey or Shaun Alexander play so I am referring to the more recent running backs when I say this.
    6. Kenyan Drake
    5. Trent Richardson
    4. Mark Ingram
    3. Derrick Henry
    2. Eddie Lacy
    1. TJ Yeldon
I would say most people wouldn't agree with my list and thats perfectly fine as this list is probably pretty controversial. I dont think people give enough credit to TJ Yeldon and what he meant to the bama offense while he was there, although you can say this about every other one of the guys on this list as well. I just think that when it came down to the critical moments, Yeldon always delivered. Out of these guys I definitely think that Derrick Henry will have the best NFL career so long as he stays healthy. He is already starting out great, and the Titans are a young team. Time will tell I guess...

I would probably Tony Nathan otherwise a fairly good accounting. If Bobby Humphrey had not been in the same class Gene Jelks may have been one of the greats. He ran all over Auburn as a freshman. If he had not blown a knee Kerry Goode would have been one of the great
