Everyone seems to be united in rolling their eyes at a recent report that a change is being made for the Avatar: The Last Airbender series on Netflix.
“There’s more weight with realism in every way,” said Sokka actor Ian Ousley to EW, followed by Katara actress Kiawentiio “I feel like we also took out the element of how sexist [Sokka] was. I feel like there were a lot of moments in the original show that were iffy.”
“Yeah, totally,” Ousley said. “There are things that were redirected just because it might play a little differently [in live action].”
While this will no doubt be pitched as Avatar somehow going “woke,” all stripes of Avatar fans are agreeing that this is just…not good writing, and not faithful to the original story or Sokka’s entire character arc. Sokka is sexist. Him being sexist is what causes Katara to get so mad she revealed Aang in the iceberg in the first place. - Развлечения
Sokka Misogyny was a product of his environment growing up in the water tribe. It not only added depth to his character but the world building as well.
No it didn’t. Stop whining
@@cheeseboyt8672yes it did tf? 😂 How does that not add depth?? He started off very sexist and then overtime became really respectful towards women and starts to admire them like he admires his father. He starts off rejecting to fight with women but he eventually ends up charging into possibly the biggest battle of his life with just two women by his side.
@@cheeseboyt8672it literally does tho. You see the same ingrained sexism in the northern water tribe when pakku refuses to train katara bc she’s a girl
@@Rippersauc3 imo, he didn’t start off very sexist. He made 2 sexist remarks, both pretty gentle, and katara made him regret both of them. Not only that, but the show strongly hints that it wasn’t pure sexism, but rather him feeling self conscious.
Also sorry, my first comment was rude. I came off a little strong. 😂
@@Rippersauc3 but I see where you are coming from. I just feel like they might have a chance of still pulling this off.
Sokka UNLEARNS his sexism. That’s part of his character development.
It's like they forgot all the men were captured/killed by the fire nation and Sokka saw himself as superior because he was one of the only ones left.
i dont understand why hollywood acts like animation is an inferior medium
No one's saying that. A live action remake just looks cool
Avatar deserves more love. The One Piece live action did great and allowed more people to be fans and watch the actual show. It's a good thing. If it fails, it doesn't hurt the fan base. It just brings more attention to Avatar
@@anti1training yeah, but why is it always a live action remake from animation and not an animated remake from live action? most of these market themselves as being more 'grown up' and 'realistic' for adults who watched the originals as kids, which all but implies that animation itself is an immature kids' thing. also, most of these projects were specifically made to be animated because it worked better with the intended visuals. making it live action takes away a lot of that specific styling and usually causes struggles with either overcomplicating or cheaping out on designs, washing out the lighting, or overusing cgi. obviously there's a fanbase for it, i just think it should only be done if it's genuinely being made out of a specific vision that won't have a problem adapting things, and 9/10 times it just seems like they're made for money or nostalgia instead.
@@fusetunes 100% agree. if they wanted to make an amazing adaption of the original, i can't think of anything else other than a re-animation, even if it was in the cheaper 3d. atla takes SO much from japanese anime, and japanese anime can be adapted to real life sure, but i think it's the best done in animation form since it keeps a lot of the charm and comedic bits. like avatar has amazing storytelling but it's also really funny! and i really dont think a live action game of thrones type of deal is gonna keep that humour or charm the original had, and its ok to like adapt things or change things... but i just feel like it's going to alienate viewers rather than keep them watching. an expensive, time-consuming re-animation would be the best to me personally, but this is capitalism and all that so... we just get this, vying for our wallets and nostalgia.
Because it's competition to them.
@@fusetunes Because the animation already happened. No one wants to see an animated remake. They want to see animated sequel or prequel. As I said a live action would look really cool. ATLA used actual martial arts in the show and martial artist as reference
Avatar deserves more love. The One Piece live action did great and allowed more people to be fans and watch the actual show. It's a good thing. If it fails, it doesn't hurt the fan base. It just brings more attention to Avatar
The adultification of Avatar is something that we definitely don’t need it.
There is a series of novels about Avatar Kyoshi that actually are a more "adult" take on Avatar, and they actually are very good. They strike a really good balance between making a darker and more violent story, while still understanding the themes at the heart of Avatar and conveying them well. I'd highly recommend them.
That being said, I definitely agree that The Last Airbender specifically does not need to be made more adult, nor do I think it would really work that well.
Yeah, a different Avatar and timeperiod would be better off with this frame of mind
The original show is still there. It will never disappear. Why would you want a remake that's exactly the same and made for kids?
The remake doesn't take away or ruin the original though. It's just different, some will like it, some won't. That's normal
I haven't watched all the episodes for Avatar, but I do remember that the whole reason why Aang was away from the Air tribe when he was trapped was because he was avoiding his responsibilities as Avatar. Him waking up and suddenly wanting to be serious about being the Avatar kinda flies in the face of that.
That isn’t the reason he ran away. He ran away because they were going to send him away to another air temple. Everyone was treating him differently after they found out he was the avatar, and he was isolated from everyone. He had no support system and he felt completely lost after they were going to take his final friend, gyatso away from him.
This ^^^
@@IsraelLlerena
it's both, people started treating aang like he wasn't a child anymore Because he was discovered as being the avatar at such a young age at such an important moment in history. he was leaning onto his childishness as a form of escapism because his responsibility as the avatar was presented as coinciding with that stripping of his childhood.
he was Both victimized by needing to grow up faster than a child should, And acting irresponsibly by running away from his responsibilities as the avatar. because he's a child in an unfair situation. as all children in the world of avatar are.
the best character flaws are Also a character's strengths. aang's childishness is as much a good thing as it is bad.
@@tobimisa that’s true! But in interviews they say they’re still keeping his goofiness, so I don’t see why people are thinking his character is obliterated

I think what's putting people off is less the way that they're describing their plans for the new show, and more how they're describing the Old show
it'd be one thing if they said that the plot needed to be condensed to fit a shorter run-time, but Specifically pointing out the detours taken in the first season as not only childish but simply a product of it Being a cartoon implies a fundamental misunderstanding of Why the first season was the way that it was.
"the old series had more run time to work with so we've decided to rework the characterization to fit a shorter time frame" hits very differently from "the old series was a cartoon so we obviously needed to make something more mature for our new show"
same with the comments about sokka and katara. cutting out the kyoshi warriors humbling sokka for time reasons is a bit disappointing, considering that episode is pretty beloved in part Because of that plot line, but it's understandable for an adaptation to make difficult decisions like that with a limited amount of time.
but framing it as the original series being "iffy," implying (or really outright stating) that the elements of sexism within the original show were simply a product of it being dated suggests a fundamental Misunderstanding of the source material. the show presented us with sexist characters not in isolation, and not even to criticize specific people for being sexist. but to present a discussion on Systematic sexism and criticize That on a fairly wide scale. they even use the Word sexist within the first episode.
sokka is the way that he is not because Sokka is uniquely sexist and needs to be humbled for it, but because his culture upholds sexist beliefs. setting it up with sokka early on allows for it to be challenged in a simpler way (along with allowing a main character start his overarching character growth), setting the foundation for it to be challenged in a more complex way later on.
it's not the deepest stuff in the world, it was intended for children after all. but that's exactly it, it was extremely mature For a children's show, at the time and in general. presenting the conversation in a clear, nuanced, and digestible way.
and it's entirely possible that the new show Will still attempt to engage with those themes. but to have it spoken about in a way that implies that they didn't understand Why it was in the source material in the first place makes people nervous about other ways that the source material may have been misunderstood. especially when the meaning Is so accessible, intended to be understood by children in 2005.
I fear that the reason they toned down Sokka’s sexism is because they are toning down the overall sexism of the water tribes in general. I fear this because it may be an attempt to make the “water good and fire bad” narrative, when in the show every element has its issues, some less obvious than others. For all the bad of the Fire Nation, and there is a lot of it, they do seem to have been more accepting of a woman’s capability, as Ozi had no problem with Azula being his heir. Of course that doesn’t mean there is no sexism at all in the FN but it does seem to be less present. If the show tries to invert this, I feel like they are taking away some of the nuance that was in the show in order to have a purely good vs bad story.
Perfectly said. Studios/shows just don't trust the intelligence of their audience nowadays. People CAN in fact discern that just because one side are the "good guys", there can still be genuine issues within that faction. They almost seem afraid that by giving the Water Tribe (or Sokka) any negative attributes, people will either 1) think sexism is ok cuz the Water Tribe/Sokka are the "good guys" and are sexist, or 2) will condemn the Water Tribe/Sokka and say they're no better than the Fire Nation. They need to TRUST the intelligence of their audiences, that we can see that flaws can exist everywhere, with protagonists and antagonists. That's what makes things interesting and layered!
It's funny, in that way it sounds like they're building a a more cartoony world for their live action adaptation than the actual animation had.
Yeah, avatar have villains and heroes from all the nations besides the air nomads, because you know. And all the nations have good and bad points
@@jenna127 I think there is a racial element to it too. The water tribe is inspired by certain cultural groups and I think they are afraid it will paint a negative light on cultures that resemble or in which the water tribe was inspired.
The OG show holds up so well that they could just have spent the budget for this on a new animated show(and then some, probably) that actually moves the world forward but heavens forbid animation is considered a serious medium.
There actually was an announcement a few years ago that Nickelodeon is making a studio called "Avatar Studios" in order to create new animated shows. They apparently were greenlit to make 3 new animated movies.
THIS! I want to learn more about what happened after Korra, even if that means going semi-scifi. Animation is perfect for it and needs to be treated better

The bit about the elephant koi is the showrunner telling us "this isn't an adventure of the week series, this is a serialized show where every episode has to be part of the major narrative otherwise it's *filler* and we can't have that. In the last 15 years, we've pretty much had every TV show now operate under "fewer episodes a season so every episode has to be a part of the main story." It limits the kind of stories you can tell
“A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest”
~Lewis Caroll (author of “Alice in Wonderland”)
I watched ATLA for the first time when I was 18. It’s not a kids show. It was tailored for kids (and was on Nickelodeon). It had mature themes but knew how to present it to children. For example, the word “g3n0cide” is never uttered in the show but that’s what’s shown to have happened to the Air Benders.
For all that fighting & war that happens on the show, the writing has always advocated for peace & the restoration of balance & order.
Indeed!! I remember that as a kid my mom wouldn't let me watch any shows that featured the same topics but were aimed more maturely but when she saw ATLA she sat down and watched it with me plenty of times
I still rewatch ATLA whenever
both as a distraction and as a reminder that even the Avatar could make my mother be nice to me for like 40-50 mins every other day (they usually showed 2 episodes in a row where I'm from)

Everyone saying that Sokka’s misogyny was only for like three episodes, yeah, technically. But the ramifications of it mold Sokka’s character throughout the show. Not only with his relationship with Suki, but his relationships with Pakku and Hakoda as well. Pakku is a dramatic example, but definitely was a parallel to Sokka’s original thinking and an example of how dangerous that thinking could get, and Sokka recognizes this. Hence why when Hakoda shows back up, Sokka doesn’t try to hold Katara down for a moment, and actually lifts her up in their father’s eyes, because even if Hakoda is far better than Pakku, Sokka wants to make it clear that he will not tolerate any of that shit in the slightest. They could’ve really explored his relationship with sexism and his culture, as well as Katara’s sort of love-hate relationship with her culture, and it could’ve been SO interesting! But noooo…
sokka's entire story centres on his relationship with the women around him. he feels like he couldn't protect his mother, he feels like he has to do everything to protect katara and the women of his tribe, he felt like he couldn't protect yue... and then he falls in love with a woman who cannot only protect herself, but can save him too. their entire relationship is about saving one another and coming to their aid, and it shows sokka that it is not only on HIM to protect the women around him, but it is something he must do for those he loves, and something he can expect in return. his sexism is the basis of this, but the kyoshi warriors is only step 1 of him dealing with his view of inadequacy as a protector and warrior. after all, that is why master piandao, aka the first time sokka finally feels like he can be a helpful member to team avatar, repeats the words suki told him when they first met: "think of the fan/sword as an extension of your arm". all of this gets resolved when he meets a woman who can teach him how to not just be a warrior, but also a person who can feel and show love and care to others beyond protection and masculinity.
Its just tradition. Like how muslims have to wear hijabs and stuff. Men fight while women cook. In the northpole, women can only bend to heal and not fight. So ye, he was raised to be like that.

Netflix's business model is broken. Not only would they never fund a 20-something episode season of anything, but they have this weird hang-up where a show has to be a major hit right out of the box or they don't give it a chance. I left Netflix when they canceled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance after just one season, the day after it won an Emmy to boot. Why? Because it appealed to a niche audience at first and would've taken time to expand beyond that audience. I don't know how their business model can adapt if they refuse to sponsor any show that isn't a guaranteed hit. Netflix wouldn't have even sponsored Game of Thrones with those standards!
Most cable networks have always known that they'd have their big hits, but they also knew that they'd have a lot of smaller shows that people would watch even if they didn't get the ratings that the bigger shows would.
I was excited about the live action series.
Then, the original creators left.
Then they said they were changing Azula and Ozai's involvement in the story and introducing them early in S1.
Then they said they were changing the rules of the Avatar State.
Then they said they're going to cut a lot of Sokka's sexism, even though that's almost his entire arc.
All of that completely destroyed any hope that I had for the series.
Listen, I am obsessed with ATLA so I will watch it regardless just to check it out. But it is super sus that the creator left the production because Netflix was overriding his input, and they disagreed so much on production direction/details. That does not give me much hope lol. I think the creator was making his own production company? I would be really excited to see what they make, even if it is completely unrelated to ATLA. The quality of the writing is so good, I would watch anything they produce.

I call it the Game of Thrones problem. Every fantasy series released after GOT has to somehow mimick its style to get popular. The first season of His dark materials also did that. Which is odd since HDT is a very different type of property. It is cold, cerebral, less interested in world building, but more interested in characters and what philosophies drive them. I believe the 2nd and 3rd season abandoned that pretense and was much better.
“I have to get to the northern water tribe” man that line right there reminds me of M night, Shyamalan movie
The thing is no one would be upset if they just made a new story set in the same universe instead of remaking a timeless classic
I could have gone for an alternate timeline, or anthology story.
Just imagine a different avatar every few episode.
While for the alternate timeline, we could have seen what could have happened if Aang stated at the temple.. Would imagine his avatar state would save his tribe or some of them at least.
the line about turning this into a netflix serialized drama basically tells me they have no idea how to adapt this show
they think they're trying to 'fix' the original show. they've made that clear. they've full on missed the mark from go, this really has no potential
its being another teen wannabe bs drama from netflix
0:16 Avatar the last Airbemder is probably one of the best shows I have ever watched. They can adapt it all they want, and I will watch them try, but I will continue to watch the cartoon every year or two on the regular. It is so good!
I was just telling a colleague that I’ve learned so many important life lessons from this show!
even in 2010, the casting got a LOT of negative press, shockingly
Just like Nostalgia Critic said in his The Last Airbender review - "Do nothing. The franchise was never out of balance to begin with. There's only one Avatar - the series". I think people are stressing out these concerns towards the Netflix adaption a bit too much. Because no matter if it turns out good or bad, there will still always be the amazing original show, and nothing will take that away.
I think it's the overall cycle of what medium is respected and enjoyed generally.
A lot of gamers were happy to share the Last of Us universe with people in their life who they would know might enjoy the story, but they are not gamers.
Same with animation - and especially with animation which is a "kids" thing - in which case you can explain how wonderful and amazing is that show as much as you like, when they would dismiss it, and won't watch it as they aren't enjoying the medium. People are more open to Live action (although even for some avatar would me too "fantasy" to be an "adult" story 🙄).
And when you were telling people how fantastic something is, and then a horrible adaptation comes out (khmmm, shamalayaman), you are going to feel invalidated and ridiculed. It is a general and unlogical feeling, not a specific situation. Your friend can be understanding, truly, yet that feeling will be evoked.
One of my friend for example... We know that she would adore castlevania.... But she just cannot get over the animation style which is "too anime-ish" for her. She would watch a live action in a second. But I do not wish to watch netflix castlevania as a live action. The animelation is one of the main reason why it's amazing.
Also it’s important to mention a lot of interview quotes referred to the creators wanting to show the genocide and killings on screen which… kinda takes the subtlety of the entire thing
Yeah!!
yeah I guess that goes back to the "who is it for" question. As a kid, I didn't register that I was seeing genocide- I just felt so sad for Aang, losing his culture and people. I think it does a disservice to the excellent (and age appropriate) writing of the original creators to erase that nuance and make it a basic action/war series.
It hasn't come out yet, maybe they will prove us wrong! But I have a bad feeling about this
What bothers me the most is that they're not okay with showing character flaws like the sexism thing that are portrayed in a negative light and are overcame, because that's "problematic" and "characters are supposed to be perfect from the start", but are okay with showing and expanding on genocide.......................ok
@@mirandalovett6063 Someone on Twitter pointed out that not seeing the genocide made it more impactful because we experience the revelation alongside Aang, we feel more empathy for him realising they're all gone than we would've if we'd had loads of gratuitous scenes of them being slaughtered en masse

There was this video on the psychology of Sokka and it was saying how his sexism stems from him being the only older male left on the tribe when his dad and everyone went to war. Which makes complete sense since that honestly would make any boy insecure. And on top of that him losing his mother and feeling like he has to be the protector for his sister is just like wow. He over compensates cuz he doesn’t know what to do. That persona makes him feel safe. This interpretation makes his character so rich just like all the others so to strip this tiny thing away is just already stripping him of all his nuance. This show should just be left alone. Make new stories in the universe instead but leave the og alone u will never compete!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's VERY obvious no one on the team, from the directors to the actors/resses has even watched ATLA if one of their MAIN concerns is how "sexist" Sokka is when there are WORSE characters in the show, Pakku is 10x more sexist than Sokka because at least Sokka doesn't flat out forbid Katara from waterbending, he just doesn't understand the point of it. Then There's OZAI, the man who mentally stunted his daughter and physically mutilated his son, then send him on for what he knew was a literal snipe hunt that he'd never achieve.
Yet, I'd never ever say "change those characters" because those characters are crucial to the story and they are the driving forces of the actions of the actions of the other characters.
Without Pakku's sexism, Katara has no reason to prove to him that she CAN fight. Without Ozai's Ozai-ness, Zuko has no reason to be single-mindedly obsessed with catching Aang.
i love that about sokka. he's very practical and does things to the absolute barest of minimums because of this practicality. his feelings of inadequacy and this practicality shapes his relationship to katara's waterbending and bending in general, which we can see until even the master piandao episode. he's a really great character, i wish more people (including the creators of the og and this live action) appreciated more.
This video has a lot of footage of Sokka being beat up lol
I will at least check out the first episode or two. And if it’s bad, I’ll just continue to enjoy all the other content created under the ATLA umbrella ☺️
I see why they chose to do a live action of the OG series, since it’s by far the most popular, but I really wish they would do this for a story that hasn’t already been on TV, like Kyoshi or Yangchen, or heck maybe even a whole new story from this world! The first series was just perfect and it’s going to be so hard for a recreation to live up to it.
i'm torn because while i don't understand why anyone thought atla needed to revisited in any other medium at all besides nostalgia bait and lingering resentment of the movie, but i also think a lot of fans will hate it just because it's not a 1:1 remake of the original, which would be pretty creatively bankrupt and also borderline unwatchable. if i want to watch the original i can, but i just don't see what fresh spin or take on the story or the characters the showrunner and writers for this version have besides "netflix wants a recognizable ip," and that's sad.
For me, they really should’ve expanded on the universe rather than rehash old material that would inevitably be compared to the original. They have such a plethora of material that isn’t readily available to the masses, Kyoshi, one of the most popular avatars, literally has a book out that I’m sure fans would love to be adapted.
I just realized it’s very possible that they aged up the characters because of the actors playing them
Cause if so, that might just be a reason behind all of this stuff happening, aside from production and higher ups
Avatar definitely isn't just for kids. And kids are definitely not the main audience. Avatar was made for everyone. Animation is for everyone. Unless it's preschool cartoons.
I cant believe netflix wants to take away all the charm that the og series had cuz they wanna make it a frikin serialized drama. 😒

a few months ago i wouldn't care this much but now that the percy jackson show is out and the showrunners there have made the same mistakes that the atla showrunners are seemingly making now (trying to inject "realism" to a kids show, trying to give the character Reasons to go on their little adventures instead of embracing the episodic nature of the stories) it makes me very 🤔🥴 not just about the atla adaptation but also about just like. the adaptation industry in general and why they can't seem to understand What to prioritize in an adaptation, especially one for kids. and i was super willing to give atla a chance when it was announced! it would be a good opportunity to showcase asian and indigenous actors! but now i think i'm just. tired lol
This this this!!
for real. you know if they ever made codename kids next door now they would have to overexplain why everything is so over the top 😭
this really hurts since these were my two favourite (western) IPs i loved as a kid. i haven't seen the percy jackson one yet (im afraid to), but percy and aang display such a wonderful childlike traumatized experience of wanting NOTHING to do with the main action that goes on. they both get forced to by destiny. and people may say that this creates a passive character (ergo, weak character), but i would have to disagree. percy and aang make the CHOICE to not save the world or make the choice to not be happy about it! which leads to their inevitable choice to do so all the more great and compelling. they're both great characters that i really related to as a depressed and traumatized child, and i really wish they were given their due diligence rather than making them like every other child hero on the market!
I CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU TO WATCH BLUE EYE SAMURAI!!! It’s basically it ATLA and Arcane had a baby and it’s one of the best animated series that I’ve seen in a while. Would love it if you made a video about it too!
Blue Eye Samurai is a true masterpiece, and I'm so happy it got a second season. And the recent Pluto anime is everything I could have hoped for as a decades-long Urasawa fan.
Nah ! That show is overrated trash 🙄🙄 stop promoting garbage !
The Netflix team seems to forget Aang is literally a 12 year old child...which is why he's having fun, doing silly things. Because he's 12. Plus the joke in season 1 is that Zuko thinks Aang is a master of evasion only for the real reason to be that Aang is not sure where he's going and keeps leading them to things from his memory. As the show goes on, Aang learns to accept and rise to his responsibilities as the Avatar. But sure blahblahblah Game of Thrones gritty "realism" depictions of the Air Nomad genocide blahblahblah
Not the Secret Tunnel song at the end😭😭😭😭😭😭
I like katara’s actress, but it does make me sad that og katara and sokka were a lot darker in skintone
The thing is, season 1 to me is in comparison the most childish and least enjoyable season of the three, so I would appreciate a more adult perspective in it, BUT as you said, it stems from Aang being a happy go lucky kid and that as well as the fact that they visit so many random places, because they have to travel throug their whole world from south to north, does a lot of heavy lifting for the world building and the emotional story line that will get lost if the first season is told through too much of an adult lense.
Please make a "Why the Internet Fell out of Love" for Nicki Minaj... especially after this whole HISS/Big Foot dilemma.
No one really cares

She mentioned on Twitter that she didn't want to because of how aggressive the Barbz are.
@@SpandexTreethat'd be such a good video tho
The internet was never in love with her in the first place. She was always problematic,
The whole point of sokka being sexist is because it’s a product of him growing up in a war torn water tribe. It adds depths to the water tribe and his character
Yes. He assumed the role of a protector of the Water Tribe women & children when all the men had to leave to resist the Fire Nation. Gender roles in his case was functional but he picked up on sexism which he unlearns in the end. I hope they don’t take it from him.
9:42 it's one of those shows where even the "filler" episodes add to the characters, world and story. One of the most beloved episodes is a socalled filler episode.
In regards to the casting of Sokka... well.. there are limitations, for me it is rather, that he really doesn't look like Sokka. He is barely any darker than the actor playing him in the 2010 movie, so that was not a good sign. Katara's actress is already a bit too pasty for my liking but this guy looks way too European for the role. But who knows, maybe that was really the best choice that they had.
I feel like I have a different take on the aang development. People say aang ran away to avoid his responsibilities, but i thought it was because he was starting to be treated differently and the monks were isolating him. The final straw was when they were going to send him away. He had no support system anymore, he even yells at the fire saying they took everyone he lives away from him. 100 years later, he befriends Katara and Sokka and starts to take on more responsibility. Protecting the southern water tribe from Zuko, jumping on the unagi to rid the burning homes from flames, he battles a literal volcano in the fortuneteller episode, and he helps the villiage being terrorized from Hei bei. He doesn’t really run from responsibility at all in these episodes, he tries to help people although he does get overwhelmed sometimes. He does it because he finally has a support system. He still is goofy and wants to be a kid, but he also wants to help. It’s not unfounded that he’d be determined to help the northern tribe after he has a vision that something bad is going to happen.
V curious on ur opinions about Korra, I agree it's not as good as atla but I also think Korra's character got a lot of unfair criticisms Korra defender til I die
It got screwed over by the team never knowing if tgey would have a book 2 or 3 or four. The lack of overarching story makes it feel less impactful, but some of the storylines are pretty creative.
It had all the ingredients to be a good show, they just didn't cook it
Unfair like what?
Nice work. Hoping to see more long form analyses from you.
I’m very worried too. With the original creators left, I think we may get a repeat of M Night Shaymalan.
No we won’t. Give it a chance before bashing it or putting your guard up too much.
Director actually said he avoided watching that version and took all the criticism of the Shaymalan version and corrected it best he could. Starting with the casting.
Shit that movie version doesn't need to be exist in the first place 😂
Creators were involved for episodes 1 and 6
Think it’s a bunch of BS that people are calling Sokka’s actor a “fake native” because he doesn’t have tribal papers… indigenous peoples being displaced and therefore their descendants is nothing new. I also thought I heard that Sokka’s character arc regarding his sexism is “changed”, not deleted from the plot. Idk tho
Its more of the fact that he never claimed to be native until the casting, was exposed for not being a part of any Cherokee tribes, and then the tribe he ACTUALLY was/is listed in is known as a fraud tribe. The tribe he's a member of requires a $20 entrance fee and is known as a "hotbed" for non-native white people claiming ancestry. A lot of Cherokee people say that Cherokee are the one of the most thoroughly documented so it's hard to believe Ian. It's just like the girl that got casted as Nani in the Lilo and Stitch live action. She never identified as Native Hawaiian only until she was casted, and now people believe she's Native Hawaiian just because she was born in Hawaii. For native people it's VERY easy to debunk when people lie about ancestry. I can't say much on Native American ancestry but I can speak on Native Hawaiian ancestry and there are lots of similarities.
@@ryleek4213 but what do we know about his family ancestry, or his cultural upbringing? Idk, I understand that in the USA it is very common for white people to claim Native American ancestry without merit, especially Cherokee heritage. But I’m not sure if we know quite enough to completely make that assumption of Sokka’s actor. Has he disclosed any genetic testing to the public, or named any immediate indigenous family members?
It can be tricky with displaced indigenous peoples, especially if we dont know his family history.
I myself am in a unique scenario where I went my entire adolescence not knowing my race/heritage, so perhaps I’m applying too much personal empathy here.
fr! some people just don’t understand “toning down” means lol
@@chava4809No I totally understand your viewpoint! Especially in such multi-cultural/racial countries like America (especially given its history with these different cultures) knowing your ancestry is so important and fulfilling. However, its also EXTREMELY suspicious and telling when someone that went their whole life identifying as caucasian (aka Ian) (or anything non-native) starts to claim indigenous ancestry at the same time they accept a role or job where ethnic background was a deciding factor, its pretty easy to tell that they were never indigenous.
Kelsey Asbille Chow, a White-Chinese actress changed her last name from “Chow” to “Asbille” (to be more racially ambiguous) around the same time she started identifying as “part Cherokee” after she was casted as a native american character on the TV show “Yellowstone”. She’s known as a “pretendian” (pretend indian).
Same thing with Sydney Agudong, a White-Filipino girl from Hawaii, who NEVER previously identified as Hawaiian started claiming she was Native Hawaiian or had Polynesian roots when she was cast as a native Hawaiian character (Nani) for the live-action Lilo and Stitch. I can add an extra perspective as I’m from Hawaii and Hawaiian, Hawaii is the one place where EVERYBODY makes their heritage known. It’s extremely unbelievable that a Hawaiian person living in Hawaii wouldn’t claim their Hawaiian ancestry their whole life, only starting when they get a job. They even went so far as to edit previous interviews/sources to change her ethnicity as well as change the interviews/sources of her more well known actress younger sister’s information to match. This one is even more frustrating because people think being born in Hawaii automatically makes you Hawaiian. Too many people think “Hawaiian” is equivalent to calling someone “Californian” or “Floridian”.
I totally empathize with people that find out about their heritage later in life, especially you because it’s so fun to learn more about yourself, but you can’t ignore the fact that many of these actors coincidentally find out their “heritage” after they book a heritage based acting job. Racial ambiguity (but still white passing) in the entertainment industry is like a pot of gold, so its not far-fetched to assume that these actors took a chance, got it, then claimed heritage to get away with it.
Ian is registered with a state recognised tribe, but the three federally recognised Cheerokee bands contend that only they are genuine, because cheerokees are extremely well documented, and that only they can verify their ancestory. (There's also been accusations that the group Ian is registered with doesn't check genealogy of applicats). I think its very probable that Ian has indigenous ancestry through his grandfather, but perhaps he wasn't enrolled in any tribe for some reason other reason , so he can't prove it. This topic is nuanced however because this isn't just a question of ethnicity but nationality. Since Cheerokee is a nationality , and views non-citizens claiming that nationality as an attack on their sovereignty, the specific claim to be Cheerokee could be problematic regardless of ancestry.
I was IMMEDIATELY out when the original creators said they were leaving.
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
thank you, everyone i have around me is excited but what I'm seeing is not making me happy and im glad to hear im not alone
1:15 Not that this matters, but I have a small correction: atla wasn’t *first* put on Netflix in 2020, it was actually on there for a while before then but was removed in like 2012. Source: my sister and I watched the whole show on Netflix between 2010 and 2011. When it disappeared from Netflix we were so devastated that we bought a physical copy lol
now i'm stoked to hear kayla's read on blue eye samurai :O
that show rocked, it worked within the confines of being a netflix show really well
I feel like it’s gonna be more Kobra Kai then I would want it to be but it is such a cool world and has such sweet characters that regardless i am optimistic i will still enjoy the adaptation for what it is.
it's like the show is trying to say that the idea of redemption from sexism is passé or something ,which is a ridiculous idea at best , and a pernicious one at worst .
Crazy how they are cutting out Aang avoiding his duties as the Avatar, despite the fact that is the REASON he was frozen in the first place.
He got frozen because he didn't WANT to be the Avatar, he ran away because of that.
Only reason he changed his mind was because of what he finds at his home Temple, after that the facade breaks and he realizes he needs to do his job.
Now if they really wanted to get rid of all the avoidance, they could have done something more interesting.
Make the Netflix series take place in an Alternate timeline where he did NOT run away.
Like either he changes his mind before leaving, Or gyatso stops him.
I would imagine his Avatar State would save at least some of his fellow Nomads even during the events of the comet, then we could have seen an alternative Team Avatar in the past.
Like Bumi from the Earth Nation, and Kuzon from the Fire Nation, etc.
Which just THINK about the potential with that adaption, what could change, etc.
I’m actually optimistic I’m looking forward to the show and the trailer looks great, and about Sokka’s sexism the show runners said they’re toning it down not completely taking it away people are acting like it ruined because of that give the show a chance
Also his sexism arc lasted like 4 episodes, it's not that big of a deal
@@Catwomen4512 Just because it lasted 4 episodes doesn't mean it doesn't have a big impact on people. I don't mind the idea of them toning it down but seeing a character genuinely change their views on something that is harmful is something that should be encouraged and showed especially in regards to children's television.
@@AustinReginald
1. People already watched Avatar. Did Sokka's sexism have a "big impact on people"? No, right? Avatar was still one of the best series in the whole world. That's the answer. It's not needed to "tone it down" in the first place. Wacthers of the original series didn't think much of the sexism in the first place.
2. Sexism is bad so they have to tone it down. What about murder? Killing of children? Making slaves? They're not bad? 😂 They never said they will also "tone it down" for the Fire Nation. In fact, they said they will show more of it. LOL
TOOOOOO IRONIC 😂 It's very clear it's not about morality why they want to change Sokka. It's simply an influence of some woke organization on Netflix or whatever reason.
@@caoinismyname gurl stfu you don't even know what woke means
i know it wrapped almost 2 years ago but i would trust you to talk about the season finale of killing eve and the BYG trope in general.. it's making a comeback and it's driving me insane
The only thing I'm worried about is the acting we've seen very little full dialogue interactions not even a single Full Clip. What I have seen Is very wooden as if the actors were given the ine 5 seconds before they said them aloud. Beyond that I'm not really worried about the story.
avatar is also my fav show ever and this was an amazing video kayla, probably my fav yet. keep it up queen!
Is it gonna be revolutionary or even remotely as good as the original series? Almost certainly not. However, I’m gonna go in as optimistic as I can because this is one of the most important tv shows to ever exist if you ask me, and seeing a dramatic interpretation from somebody who obviously does love the source material could be fun at least
Am I the only one who’s irritated by the fact that we’re seeing Ozai’s face so early?? I mean… that was part of the looming threat and menacing quality that I loved about his character. He was always in the shadows in a way and that made him truly scary.
12:37 I bet they cut at the episode where the characters point out how crazy and hard to make Katara's hair style is lol
Okay, so they are getting rid of some stuff. We don't know if that's gonna make the show bad, I'm sick and tired of everyone saying oh, they removed some stuff so the show is going to be bad, you don't know that I don't know that you haven't watched it, I haven't watched it. It hasn't even been released yet. How can you make an informed opinion on something if you haven't even watched it seen it or read it? I love Avatar the last airbender. I loved that cartoon series growing up. It was my favorite out of everything I watched growing up. I'll be the first one to let everybody know if I think it's good or not. But I'm not gonna tell everybody. It's bad before I even watch It.
I 100 percent agree. All this whining is giving me a serious headache.
I know absolutely nothing about Avatar. But I do know The Witcher and I’m familiar with the way Netflix squatted down and took a giant dump on it. So thoughts and prayers to the Avatar community. I feel your pain.
Oh my gosh I'll be heartbroken if it ends up like The Witcher!!
@@princessthyemisAt least the Witcher got one good season
This one won't even take off
@@user-lq4ct6dr5m I am not familiar with the game or books, but I absolutely loved season 1 and will watch it again and again.

I'm only two chapters in, and I loved it, the words the author chose are so precise that you can see without eyes
I wish producers of reboots or adaptions would actually watch the original things they are adapting first. That just never seems to be the first expected credential. Is it really too much to ask?
I plan on watching Blue Eye Samurai soon too. I'm currently watching Arcane (have one episode left, so no spoilers please!) and it is... simply amazing. One of the best shows I've watched in, well, maybe ever (I'll check back in once I've finished it). I've been getting back into fantasy and it's such a unique world when it comes to the crossover of scifi and fantasy aspects, yet the all the characters and the narrative is so human and gorgeously written. It's series like ATLA and Arcane that show how disrespected animation is as a medium because they and their writing would be award-winning and more popular if they had been live action. I truly don't understand what people have against the medium, why they dismiss it or find it exhausting. I know my mom feels that way with few exceptions (she adores Phineas and Ferb). Does anyone else have experience with people like that and know why they feel that way? I know there's the perception of animation being for children and adult-animation being crass and/or low-quality (South Park, Family Guy, later Simpsons, etc), but there are so many other movies and series that clearly don't fall under either stereotype.
Kinda weird/annoying that people started praising/anticipating the show as soon as Netflix did the bare, bare minimum of casting ethnically accurate actors for the lead cast. In a heartbeat everyone forgot that the OG creators left for a reason. Now it's all about "how good the previews look"
They should've just left it at the latest trailer. Because each day its like they reveal one more reason not to watch the show, right after people were beginning to get excited
Blue Eye Samurai is fantastic! I was also blown away by this other adult animated series on Max called “Scavengers Reign” and I think some of my more underrated fav shows would be “Fargo” on FX/ Hulu and “For All Mankind” on Apple TV +
I watched avatar at around age 35 and its easily one of the best animated shows ive ever seen. Im a huge anime fan and have watched a great deal of animation so that's saying a lot. Iroh will forever be one of the wisest animated characters ive ever had the pleasure to watch.
I wanna cosplay and record myself too and ask Netflix to produce it.
Avatar is a kid's show. Obviously it's not JUST for kids but that is the main audience in mind. And it's like they're scared to embrace that
Adaptations are hard, even I am not clear of my own expectations, do I want to watch 100% accurate adaptation and watch the exact same again or do I want something new that feels familiar? No matter what you do and how there will be people who won't like it. And let's be honest, fans of the original story are hard to satisfy...
Can we please just wait for it to come out to shit on it 😭 I'm getting a lot of these reactionary (not in the political sense) videos from media critics I generally like, before the new show even premieres. This whole "new thing will go bad" without seeing the thing just feels kind of reflexive to me.
the only game of thrones nod i can appreciate out of this is the fact that there are also dragons in the avatar lore. that's the only way they can say they want to appeal to game of thrones fans.
i mean, i doubt it could be worse than the live action movie
Lol the live action movie was still the worst dumbass 😂
Yeah, I have no intentions of watching this, I'm just not really interested in most live action adaptations of animated IP. However, I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Fallout television series. Fallout is my favorite video game franchise (New Vegas my favorite video game ever), and everything that's been provided so far looks and sounds amazing. And it features Kyle MacLachan, who is from my favorite TV show of all time, Twin Peaks.
You said everything that I'm thinking.
Let’s just say it: this series will never be brought complete justice in a live action. Just because it’s an amazing series doesn’t mean it needs to be translated to live action. There’s just no scenario where the live action will have the same amount of magic the original did.
PS Kayla, if you want to dig in to something with some resonance and great animation, Ergo Proxy is great, as is GIST : Stand Alone Complex. I'm a huge fan of GIST : Arise too.
We gonna ignore the fact that 20 minute 20 episodes equals the exact same as 50 minute 8 episodes I’m not disagreeing with all your points but the pacing of the show shouldn’t be the issue just how they make the characters
The ONLY original creator I would love to come back for any Avatar media is Aaron Ehaz. At least as a consultant. The guy knows his stuff so well!
If they adapt it like The Last of Us and play to the strengths that live footage gives and downplay what they’d lose with changing from animation, it should be amazing. The problem is they’re trying to make it like other series like GOT and not like THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL MATERIAL that is actually popular for a very good reason.
They need to stop looking at it as a money maker, and look at it as a passion project, which in turn will become a money maker… why is it so hard for the entertainment industry to grasp!?
One of the charming aspects of Aang's character development - coming face to face with the hard edges and pain of the world - is that it mirrors the story of the Buddha as a child. Prince, unworldly, big destiny, goes into the city and discovers aging, sickness, and death. And with that shock concludes that the truth of life is suffering, but that can be alleviated.
The orphan prince trope is often used, unsurprisingly, as it works as story and as Jungian archetype. But it's a journey, not a hazing ritual by hack writers.
it's hard to bring the original character development to live action without triggering the current generation
Secret tunnel is a favourite for my wife and I ahah hands down our most referenced episode
I love your videos, I'm actually kinda excited for this show. My thing is that nothing will be better than the original but I'm interested to see how it adapts the best stories ever written live because of their ability to be retold so I'm interested to see how well this stands as its own thing, but I am skeptical because it does look so much like just making the show live action. But those structural changes and tone changes from kids' cartoons to adult drama I'm at least interested to see what they do.
its still too early to tell but this does put pear in me
The best part of this live action is how it led to the creation of the Avatar Studios
From everything I've heard about this series, the more this feels like a cross between Disney's live action reboots and the super-gritty TV adaptations like Riverdale, Sabrina, & Wednesday
Keep Game of Thrones and Avatar The Last Airbender separated Netflix, PLEASE!!
There are too many No-No things if two were ever to be combined 😨🤮
we finally got good visuals for a live action remake...but at what cost
I think live action can be awesome if done correctly. The one piece adaption was a good example of how to do it right and it’s clear the benefit to having the original creators on board. But with the creators having left this project all I can think is imagine if Netflix had instead green lit the creators to make something that adds to their world through an animation. Instead of trying to reformat the same story. They probably would make way more money, and upset way less people…
No one is talking about what is important… the actor playing Sokka looks like the guy that played Sokka in the play in season 3.
