In the past few years, Renée Rapp has left behind a trail of iconic belted notes, stellar albums and EPs, and starring roles on stage and screen. But her press tour for "Mean Girls" may be one of her best performances yet.
Whether she's shouting out her celebrity crushes or coming for dudes she just hates, Rapp's comments while promoting her new film are anything but canned.
The general joke online is that Rapp hasn't received any PR training - or at least, she hasn't taken it to heart - but whether she has or hasn't, it's impossible to deny that her self-assuredness has endeared her to many.
Take this clip from the "Mean Girls" junket. A media-trained celeb might sit through this press day gamely but carefully answering questions about how she got into character as Regina George, if she'd seen the original "Mean Girls" movie, and dispensing mildly interesting anecdotes from the set.

They toured her around press when she was in the musical, and they definitely gave a 19 year old media training. You can tell when she's talking that she'll say a lot but also not much at all--she's just quipping on the conversation or scenarios or where a thought led her in that moment. You can be "real" and not be spilling your info publicly lmao, plus she just has a dry sarcasm emblematic of gen z and how we speak. It's so not that serious

That's the closest thing I can think of as being "violent", because I don't recall him actually hitting or physically hurting someone any other way (unless I missed something). I think that Renee Rapp should just continue to be herself. People deciding that they don't like her/find her annoying is unfortunately a part of the trend cycle.
It seems like she just wants to share her art and talent with the world, and the “public figure” thing is an unfortunate side effect. Honestly we as a whole need to work on not idolizing or creating parasocial relationships with people we don’t even actually know, and then expecting them to be perfect

I think we are so trained to judge women so harshly that I have to stop myself sometimes and think “Is this really my opinion or do I just want to be a hater right now”. You have to try to stay grounded because it’s easy to jump on the hate bandwagon. Hating on Rene will make me forget my own lack of achievements and insecurities for a minute, but is it justified, is it truthful, is it objective?

There was an AMAZING article a while back about the "It Girl" talking about Megan Fox, Jennifer Lawrence, etc and it said it's main issue with "It Girl" other than it fading very quickly is that nothing is sexier than something "new." You're only as popular until the next "thing" comes along. Fame is so temporary that's why it's SO important to be talented.

Something I wish had been mentioned is the kinda unique it-girl moment that Margot Robbie had over 2023, particularly in terms of her decision to very deliberately step away while people still loved her rather than waiting until public opinion turned on her. I think for a lot of it girls it’s hard to know when to disengage or even how to do it, but she’s probably been the most successful at taking her flowers and leaving before people start hating her.
Emma Stone is another one who has done this quite well and figured out by taking breaks in between films and also not being on social media, which helps preserve some mystery. And being very private about her personal life is another key.
She did the same post Wolf of Wallstreet and The Big Short. I saw people labelling her a JLaw wannabe for talking about drinking beers in the shower and being a fake tomboy etc and then she disappeared before any backlash caught fire. I think she and her team pay verrrrrry close attention to the chatter about her online.

Because the "boys of the month" don't open their mouths or have a notable personality. I don't think I've heard Logan Lerman, Jacob Elordi, Josh Hutherson, etc give a unique opinion and that's by PR design. They're there to be cute and surface level during press and yall eat it up. It takes a lot for public opinion to turn on them because there's usually hardly any behavior or takes to be mad at them about.
And once they do do something wrong, the people who are fans of them bc they're hot don't make a big fuss about "cancelling" them bc no one was emotionally invested in them and their morals to begin with.

I could type an anthology but the point is that /that/ group of male celebs is liked and marketed because of their looks, not opinions which is why people don't tire of seeing them (which was the question) bc that's all most people do is "see" them. Rachel Zegler for example is hardly a recognized household name and her platform isn't just built off her being hot. Mmm the truth is Renee has a naturally extroverted and assertive personality that is a harsh switch up from the lay-back or adorkable IT girls the internet has been gobbling up for the last decade.

Fully agree, I’ve been following her since 2019 and I just want the best for her. She seems to just be having fun now and after the year she’s had, I’m really happy for her. At the peaks of last year, she had been having a great time on tour and was so happy with her team and friend group and relationship so it was fairly sad to watch when her relationship (presumably) ended and all of her press releases were coming out where she seemed so sad and drained. I’m just happy she’s doing well again and I’m obsessed with the mean girls cast. They seem to genuinely all like each other on this press tour and I excitedly consume all content that comes out from their press run.

IMO, the problem isn't that Renee is "brutally honest", it's that she's socially awkward. And yes, it's funny in 10 second clips for tiktok, but if you watch a full interview, it seems like she doesn't know how to talk to people or keep up the flow of conversation. Celebs like Aubrey Plaza or Nathan Fielder are really good at doing this awkward humor while still being engaging. If you can't do both it just comes across (unintentionally) like you're being kind of rude.

I actually think her recent interview with Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert were quite good. It seems like she was enjoying her time being interviewed by then especially with Meyers. I guess Meyers knows how to keep up the conversation with a social awkward person like her and made her comfortable enough, I liked it. I actually want Renee to be the guest for Meyers' show every week 😂

I feel like Rene rapp is this kinda Frankensteined it girl, she has the rough around the edges act that people loved in Olivia Rodrigo, Jenna Ortega, and Tate McRae, this more sweet flirtatious rebound like Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, and Adele, also this good girl image but I’m gonna be more honest thing that personified Beyoncé, Britney Spears, and Taylor swift. I think her music is good I do think some songs are generic but her voice makes them worth listening too. I do like her acting but I’m more concerned that she’s not media trained to the level of fame she is getting, she has some media training but I think she’s growing faster than she’s adapting to it. I’m am intrigued to see where she goes from here
i’ve never perceived any of the artist you named as “rough around the edges” as such. they all have been in the media since children, and you can tell. they’re very well spoken & aware of how to present themselves vocally & physically on camera. if anything, i’d say this is more-so adele, as she was scooped up & expected to know how to present herself despite the fact that as being a music artist, music should & is most likely going to be your main focus. none of those people just randomly came into stardom, it was a gradual incline. they’re just still young & almost everyone at this age has space to grow into stronger public speakers. amy winehouse also had this unprepared for media, rough around the edges, personality. this is typical for artist who have never acted & mostly prioritized their music instead of trying to cultivate a following outside of their music & appease the general public. which isn’t bad, you need both if you want to be a superstar, because some people naturally have it, most need experience.

It's crazy how women are forced to choose between "professional serious worker that does everything perfect" or "outrageous/clumsy/relatable it-girl that is coming to end misogyny and all the evils of the world". Just like someone else said, there is no "right" answer, so they might as well have fun and live their way. I think it's also interesting the point made near the end of the video about how men are percieved in a similar way of creating a dichotomy, in this case it's more like "handsome (sometimes older) guy that everyone is thirsting on, and whose only value is how good he looks" or "weird/funny guy that may be charming because of his charisma, but is expected to be always with 100% of his energy and giving a show (either as himself or as the character he played)".
men are never expected to only be valued by his looks. most older male celebrities who are handsome are considered talented and hard working and well respected plus being handsome.

I don't think the "price" that male celebrities pay is the same as their female peers, but it's still bad in some cases like for example, Pedro Pascal, who is mentioned in the video. While he's absolutely praised for his work, every interview I've seen of him (not too many, so maybe I'm wrong) has to mention something about his looks, sometimes to the point of simplifying him as just a good-looking older dude.
I thought I could never be a celebrity bc I hate not saying what I’m thinking or feeling it’s so hard so Reneé is a breath of fresh air and makes me enjoy seeing her on my screen even more especially after calling out that man out!

I think the whole "she has no media training" thing is stupid, because her having this image and saying these things could also very well be media training, they could just be telling her be yourself and be unhinged. Exactly - I saw a tiktok of someone saying oh that won’t happen to Renee cuz she’s queer & we’re always gonna rock with her 😂😂…like mhmmm okay, the issue is building these women up to a pedestal as if they can’t do any wrong. I will say if Renee just focuses on music, that could help - I don’t think music artists are pushed to be in the press as much as actors are (unless said artist wants to be).

Though I've heard of Renee Rapp before and was aware of her, I haven't watched any of Renee Rapp's acting projects or listened to her music, and I do not have Twitter or Tiktok, so these clips were my first introduction to her. And, to be honest, I don't really think this kind of personality is all that "refreshing." There are plenty of others who act like this, and not just women. The attention just happens to be on her at the moment.

There is this weird take people have when someone either joins a long-running franchise or a remake which is that they MUST BE a massive fan of said property to act on it which is, like, not a thing. The biggest example of it being Daisy Ridley for Star Wars because god forbid this woman share that she had very little contact with this 40 year old franchise of movies.

Fully agree, it was actually really disappointing to see how much hate she started getting online for being “cringe” as someone who knew her name a long time ago as someone who used to post covers on RUclips, especially in the musical theater scene. I was really happy for her that she was getting bigger roles because that’s huge and then everyone decided that younger actresses aren’t allowed to act their age anymore. She is inherently going to be slightly cringe because she grew up in the theater scene and she’s young, that’s no reason to hate her.
The thing is that Renee Rapp fully embraces her character type and what’s truly right for her instead of bragging about “Imma real Disney Princess”! I sure hope she’s another one to play Ursula for a future Little Mermaid production as she totally resembles Sherie Rene Scott!
I wasn’t aware of all that hate at the time but i wonder if some it wasn’t a factor of the fact that Disney live remake fatigue and hatred was already settling in and then the main character/actor says what she says, and so the only remaining enthusiastic hard core Disney nut fans are offended. I was just thinking about this a few days ago, as all the Mean Girls press has shown up on my socials. It seems like a lot of people are loving her rn and calling her lack of media training "charming," but I think it is unfortunately inevitable that once the initial shine of her rising star fades, there will be backlash and we'll be seeing these same clips that people are loving rn resurfacing and being completely picked apart/criticized. It is so predictable.
I unapologetically love Reneé Rapp. I think she is one of the (if not the) most exciting young person we have coming up in the entertainment industry. I would love for her to be on Broadway again, I've loved her in all the different incarnations of Mean Girls. I thought she was tremendous in the Mean Girls Movie Musical. Snow Angel is fantastic, I'm loving it so much. I've been a fan of her for a long time now, and I don't think that'll ever stop.

I started listening to Reneé’s music after Sex Life of Collage Girls (bummed that she is leaving😢) Some songs are amazing!! I especially like “Snow Angel”, “Pretty Girls” and “Talk Too Much”. Also, the cover to her album is GORGEOUS 😍 I’m thrilled that she’s getting more recognition through Mean Girls! Just hope the public isn’t too hard on her…

Yes! Theater kids/Broadway kids act different from movie actors because stage acting and movie acting are very different. When you're on stage you need to act bigger, have your reactions be more noticeable, because there's not a camera two feet from your face picking up the miniscule changes in emotion. Some people can transfer really well from stage to screen, but there is a fundamental difference in how different kinds of actors act.

My problem with her is that she literally went on a podcast and boasted about how she yelled at a service worker and backed her into a corner AND called her a bitch just for doing her job. That’s not something you brag about and she seems out of touch. It was just rude.

I agree 100%. We call out men who say things on their podcasts about women being past their prime after 25, but this woman says it and everyone is so quick to applaud her and agree. Even if it's not her intention, this DOES contribute to sexism and making women feel insecure about age. And the thing is, she's 24, not 14. In a mere 3 or 4 years, she's going to start seeing how society will slowly start treating her differently and make the same sexist remarks back to her. It bothers me how people say they want a girls girl but will simultaneously cheer on a mean girl (no pun intended lol).
out of context I get how it can rub someone up the wrong way, but I think it's mostly a joke that stems from how critical older demographics have been towards her since she was a literal teenager (particularly in regards to her body and general appearance). She also just tends to say it as way of clapping back at millennials who are very openly misogynistic on tiktok.

I’ve been loosely following Renee since she did Mean Girls on Broadway, didn’t get to see her in the role but I remember seeing clips and being blown away by her voice and thinking what a fantastic replacement choice she was. I think one thing that's missed is delivery and tone - you can say whatever you want but it helps if you know and care what tone and language to use in a given situation, and when to shut up, frankly. It ain't right but there it is. This applies to both men and women in the public eye.

I love Renee and I really hope that her personality is not why she doesn't reach the level of fame her talent deserves. She's an amazing singer and actress, and I understand that not everyone loves her personality, that's fine, but I don't think people should neglect the obvious talent she has just because they don't like her interviews. I'll be honest, sometimes I cringe at a couple of her interview moments, but I genuinely don't care as long as shes a good person that continues to put out good music. And if she does continue acting, I'm going to be there to see it.

I think "trying" is the problem. Just be yourself how about that? To me, it is the "trying" part that we are able to see through and then becomes problematic. Using your example of Jennifer Lawrence; she may be irreverent and a bit silly in real life, but in interviews and such her demeanor reads as fake and disingenuous, rather than the actual personality of an actual person.

Haven’t watched the video yet (I will get to it later because I love both Renee and kayla) but I’m just hoping it portrays Renee in a good light. I’m getting mixed vibes from these comments but she is quite literally my favorite artist and I’ve followed her career since 2019. She’s unhinged in interviews, yes, but she’s just so endearing and I love her so dearly. However, I will agree with the comments on how frustrating it is to see how quickly media turns on women in Hollywood. I’m scared for Renee sometimes because of how many people she’s exposed to now but I’m just so happy to see her career continue on a successful path. She’s on the rise and I’m just so happy for her.

Alright, I finished the video and it toes the line in a very respectful way. I will say that I can absolutely see the way media will turn on her but as my roommate says, if they cancel her for something dumb, all the easier it will be to get tickets to her next tour. I love her so dearly that I dread that situation because I also know she’s a very emotional person and wouldn’t be able to help but to take it a little bit to heart but she has a great supporting friend group currently at the least. Great video. I think one thing that is relevant to mention is that Reneé Rapp has ADHD. This type of communication style is consistent with that, I think the option of her inadvertently offending the internet is the more likely one in this case (unintentionally saying something offensive and consequential alienation is a common theme people with ADHD have to deal with).
I mean, she did literally dox and harass a car rental service worker for simply doing their job. It’s kind of hard to support her after that… I acknowledge the internet hates women and male artists have done way worse, I don’t support them or their actions either, but her going on a podcast and bragging about harassing someone while doxxing them is not okay and should be noted.

I also expect them to own up to their mistakes, and I do in fact stop supporting them when they don’t. Not saying she should lose followers, I like some of her songs and think she’s a very good singer, she made a mistake that made it hard for me to support her, but that’s just me. She doxxed and harassed a service worker for doing their job and I don’t like supporting someone who does that, be that a man, a woman or a non-binary person.

I feel like people saying the groupthink will Turn on Renee is jinxing it. Even the women the women compared to her here feel like a false equivalence. The tide hasn't turned on Jenna, and Rachel isn't on as big a platform as Renee. The difference with Jennifer Lawrence felt like she was trying to be relatable. Nobody cared about her liking pizza, it was the vibe that she was being a pick-me and just aligning herself with trendy Tumblr quirks at the time. Renee never gives the vibe that she's trying to get people to like her or think she's relatable, she just is.
I think a better comparison would be Olivia Rodrigo. Transparently, I don't really like her, but she has a similar level of "unfiltered" in interviews/appearances and it just makes people feel like she's more authentic. She's still in the public's good graces.
I think the makeup of Renee's fanbase being people around her age and queer people factors in. I just hope this rapid uptick in Renee's popularity accompanied with people making takes like this already implying that her downfall is imminent aren't the reason it happens.
