I enjoyed that, glad you sorted the glue on the points problem, I really liked the way you done the rocks, they looked so good on the side of the hillside and it brings it More to life 😀
Thanks Adam! Yeah I'm really pleased with how the rock face and the entire hillside has come together. It's definitely a nice feature for the layout. Thanks for watching 😃
@@railwayjade oh yeh obviously the whole layout survived, nobody would end a video on a cliffhanger and then end on a sad note one week later. Im surprised however that the entire ballasting seems to have been removed. Id have thought that redoing only the small area around the points would be enough.
I know, there's such a huge difference between the start of the episode and the end! Was great to have to watching along earlier Nigel! Thanks for tuning in 🤩
Loving this series, very inspirational to see a layout progress. I tried to do a similar series with my 009 layout and have managed three episodes over about a year as it's so hard to find the energy to film as I go - much more enjoyable just working on it without filming. Well done!
Thanks Tom! I watched some of your own 009 videos before I started this project and I hope we get to see some more in the future - even if it's just the progress you've made in private. But yes it does take a lot of work to not only make the layout but film and edit it all together too 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
When making the mix for the cliff face, if you add the paint to the mix as part of the fluid, the rock will come out pre-coloured. This also has the advantage that if the finished article gets chipped, there will not be a white gash to spoil the illusion.
Hi Chris, you could absolutely do that but as I mentioned in the video I wanted to paint it in the same way as the tunnels to make everything look consistent and that meant starting with a white base. Thanks for watching 😃
This video made me remember how much of building a layout is literally 'just waiting for this bit to dry'. I don't miss that ha. I am surprised you didn't paint the terrain before putting in the rocks, would have thought it was easier the other way round. Cheers
You're not wrong with the drying times! 😂 You could do the painting either way round to be honest. The only thing was that I would have had to paint the filler holding the rocks in place afterwards anyway so it didn't really make much difference. Thanks for watching 👍
Hey Robbie, yep you can definitely do that. As I said in the video though, I wanted to paint it using the same technique as did for the tunnel portals so they all looked consistent with each other. Thanks for watching 😃
There’s one on the left hand side of the station loop that definitely needs looking at as after ballasting the track is very uneven there. When they’re on the points themselves though, I’m still not sure why some locos jump around a bit - I’m guessing maybe it’s because they’re set track points. Thanks for watching 😃
Nice! Didn't think you could make a mold release with water and soap. Personally for when I did molds and casts I used baseline (I.e. Petroleum jelly.) A little tip for when doing casts as I've done this in my 12 years of mask making. Try slosh casting some very runny lasted first so it gets into every nook and cranny and let it sit up then come behind and top it off with a solid fill of thick plaster. Keep up the good work
Awesome video mate. Glad to see you got the point work issue sorted out! The hill with the rock faces has turned out looking great! Looking forward to seeing some greenery on the layout. - Nicholas.
I'm very glad to have trains running again too! 😂 Yeah the hillside has really made a big difference to the layout along with the rock face. It's definitely starting to come together now! Thanks for watching 👍
I am now really inspired to make my own 009 scale model railway in a suitcase! It could act as a portable layout as my main 00 scale railway isn't really that portable
I think I was so tired at that point that it didn't really matter. I definitely think it's good to show I'm not immune to mistakes - in reality I'm a pretty average modeller who just happens to have a camera so I wouldn't want anyone to think that it all goes perfectly every single time. Thanks for watching 😃
Enjoying your videos. What's the plan for accessing the fiddle yard? It looks like the back opening will be completely covered by the back of the suitcase? I think you're doing much better with the derails ads. Episode 1 sounded like you were reading ad copy, while 2-3 felt much more like a personal recommendation.
There is a bit of space round the back of the suitcase to access the fiddle yard if needed but it's more of a storage loop really to hide other trains out of site. Yes, I'm not use to having to read ads so it's taken a bit of practice. Funnily enough though most of my videos are scripted out beforehand - otherwise I'd ramble on forever and never get to the point! Thanks for watching 😃
I used to watch that show all the time as a kid! Maybe it's stuck with me in a subconscious way but I'm definitely taking that as a massive compliment. Thanks for watching 😃
Looks good glad the points didn't stick now I know it's going in a suitcase once it's completed but the bare baseboard showing at the back in the fiddleyard maybe should be painted just to hide the appearance if you want to get any shots through either tunnel mouth either way still looks great and looking forward to seeing it progress further with hopefully no more hiccups along the way
Oh don't you worry! There's still a long way to go yet and the inside of the tunnel will definitely be having some work done to it 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
Interesting, I mean the filler mix is holding them rock solid at the moment - if you'll pardon the pun 😉 No problems so far or on any of my other layouts where I've used the same technique. Thanks for watching 👍
Painting questions: I notice you paint directly onto the baseboard, without any undercoat. Does this cause any issues? I notice you added track & ballast and rocks and then painted the remaining areas in brown. Why do it this way rather than cover everything in brown and then lay tracks / add rocks over the top?
Hi there, no none of my layouts have ever had any issue with having paint applied to the baseboard.. the brown is acting as an undercoat anyway for the scenery that will go on top. As for the order, my hill actually goes over the track so this had to be built after the track was laid and then everything was painted brown at the same time rather than having to do it twice. Additionally, when laying tracks it can sometimes be helpful to make and follow marks on the baseboard which is harder to do if you've already painted it. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃
Watch the previous episode, then don't do that! 😂 In all seriousness, ballast the points separately from the rest of the track. I've actually done a whole video about how I ballasted the points on my 00 Gauge layout. Thanks for watching 😃
Amazing, thank you for subscribing! Episode 4 was just released a few days ago with the next one due for release on Friday so there's plenty more progress to come. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi, I know this video is almost a year old but i was just wondering if you have any more tips for using chicken wire for hills as im just starting my own railway and have planned a tunnel/hill section
Hi there, Episode 9 of my modular model railway series may be of some use: ruclips.net/video/E7NSgeH6cvE/видео.html I used chicken wire and polystyrene to create a larger tunnel section and the process is covered in a bit more depth in that video. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks Lois, the hill definitely makes a huge difference to the layout! Just need to get the scenery done now. Thanks for watching 😃
I'm waiting anxiously to see what became of the glued points!
Looking at the area around the track with the various colours and imperfect surface it seems like all the trackwork was removed and then relayed.

A good tip is too add grey paint to the plaster so any white plaster doesn’t show through plus you don’t need to paint it once your finished
