Ive built 12 CBGs. Found a guy named Del Puckett on RUclips. Hes gotva five part build series. I build mine for about $12. If you use cheap tuners and only buy three strings. Lots of fun to build and play.

@itsclearasmud7718 how on earth did you build one for $12? Please share!

    • @itsclearasmud7718

@@josephkuser3998 I built fretless with inexpensive strings and tuners. (8$) I built my latest and best out of recycled pallet wood. I'm using violin construction techniques now with hide glue. The acoustic sound is really very good in contrast to actual cigar boxes. Adding frets and a quality fret board does increase the cost; initial purchase price is an investment with frets because of a bulk purchase and the fretting saw. But still all pretty reasonable in price. CB Gitty has a bunch of reasonably price parts. I have started using higher quality tuners. The cheap ones are ok, a bargain really. But I think tuners really effect pleasure and playability. Id say i usually have about 14$ in a guitar with just a piezo. If I install a piezo, pickup and pot set thats another 12$ to 25$.

I'm emailing with Del about buying a custom CBG from him (April 2024). Watched several of his videos this past week, and he seems to be a pretty cool guy through our emails, looking forward to getting a very nice setup from him.

@@marcd1981 good for you. You won't be disappointed. Pucket guitars embody all of the wonkeyness of the traditional CBG with all the playability most dont have because the builders dont have his expertise.

I built one of these when stewmac first introduced them. It was a fun build. I wish you would have given it a bit of a driftwood spin though to show what’s really possible.

Hey guys. I just want to thank you for the content you put out. It has demystified a lot about Lutherie to the point that I feel confident enough to at least try building a guitar of my own. That'll be starting soon. Just need to finish off another in progress project first. (for realzies) But yeah. Thanks a lot guys!

I am the 2nd type of person - I've never built a guitar. I've been thinking of having a crack at a kit guitar (trying and make a "personalized custom tele").
BUT I watch this channel because its one of the best woodworking/creation channels out there, period. I am a guitar player, and I became really curious about how acoustics were built, but I also love watching DIY/woodworking channels (I love blacktail, foureyes etc...). Not only do you make beautiful guitars, you're production is great (from explanation, shots, process etc) and both Matt & Chris are just great presenters.
I could never build a guitar, I could stop playing guitar - I'll still eagerly be awaiting videos.
Quite simply, this is an excellent wooodworking show.
But interestingly re: kit guitars/building - I dont like having a million guitars, I have the 2 perfect electrics for me, and I dont need any more. I've been contemplating when "GAS" hits - getting a cheaper kit (like those £80 harley benton ones, talking lego kit, computer game, couple of trips to the cinema) and having a crack at it, maybe just assembling and simple finish at first, but then maybe crack at putting in some of my "dream" features on guitars that dont have them, like comfort cuts on a tele, slightly different wiring. I don't have a bass, and do want to learn, so that might be a good spot to start!

Thank you for all the videos and how you guys show people how to make guitars without the high-end tools. I’ve made a handful of acoustics and a couple electric so far. My 13 year old daughter and I completed a S-style kit from Stewmac recently. Super fun kit to do with a kid. She did 95% of the work, with no previous wood working experience. Always happy with everything I’ve gotten from Stewmac.

Hey guys , merry Christmas from Australia , I built my first guitar after watching channels like yours . I've been a subscriber since the beginning and have learned some things from you . Ok , first guitar cost zero ...almost . Tools at hand . On my 3rd and thinking of number 4 . Cost of addiction so far , lost count in the thousands . But quality has improved exponentially. Cheers gentlemen , .. Peace ✌

Anything that encourages building is a good idea! CBGs are clearly a lot less intimidating than building a classical guitar from scratch! I've built 29 CBGs so far. A kit is certainly quicker than bumbling along trying to figure things out and making lots of mistakes. But by bumbling along and making mistakes, you can really learn a lot!

I'm in the process of building mine now. The basic assembly is done - on to the finishing! This is only the second guitar I've built and the first cigar box, also the first I'm going to finish (stain). It was very easy to construct the body even for a beginner.

I bought the kit, but immediately started upgrades to it. As I want to give it as a gift. So basically I bought it for the design, and use some of it as a template. Changing pine box with cherry, changed the screen bridge with a really bridge, and a few other things. It’s amazing what is available out there to build Cigar box guitars, with 3 string version of 6 string guitar parts. Thanks.

This actually doesn’t look too scary. I would totally love to try a kit like this sometime. I actually think this provides more value and useful skill teaching than pedal kits. It also looks totally fun - those 3 string built Loog guitars of the same size as this kit are $40-$50 at their regular price. Lots of adults buy Loog guitars even though they’re meant for kids because they fun and portable. For $100, you get to learn some skills, save some money, and can even paint it to your liking or mod it easily. The Loog guitars are well built and hold up to the abuses of kids over time. My 3 nephews have had one for 6 years that is a bit relic’ed, lol - although the nut fell out and got lost, but I got a replacement pre-cut nut for 9 bucks from the company that I’m gonna glue in. However, I’d imagine that StewMac is likely providing a much better pickup and parts. I’d actually be curious to compare the quality and performance of this 3-string to a Loog. Anyway, it looks like a fun build, and the price seems fair if you have the necessary tools laying around your house.

My particular intersection of woodworking and electronics skills is a bit to high to get this kit, but the video makes me want to buy a neck and some hardware, make my own body and give it a try. (guitar skills are ~zero) If I got a cheap guitar I'd spend as much time tinkering with/fixing it anyway, might as well just build it myself and save a buck.

I am subscribed and in the distant past I used to tinker with setup on my guitars, one time a friend asked me to repair his 12 string for money!!
When I checked the guitar I kinda got scared, loose braces, bridge off and he wanted a refret.what I didn't spot at first was the neck bound in faux tortoise shell.
DOH!! so each fret had to be cut to fit around the binding. When I finally got it all fixed I was obliged to warn him of the pitfalls of leaving his guitar in the trunk of his car in the middle of summer,so he put it on the back seat and somebody stole it.At least they didn't replace it with a couple of banjos, that would really hurt......................

I've done a couple of minor repairs on acoustics, really would like to build one but the price of the (really nice) wood I'd choose was prohibatively expensive, I've souced a 17th century mahogany table top which would make it doable, but stuggling to find anyone with a bandsaw big enough to slice it up for me, now you've got me looking for a cheap old electric to butcher up for a CBG, tho I'm tempted to stump up for a decent humbucker now for that too lol
