I did this with an old yard sale acoustic. Back was gone. Bridge was buckled. Neck wiggled in the dove tail joint and the fret board was dangling and broken. I flattened sanded the neck and cut its width down to 1.5 inches. Gave it an extra thick fret board to compensate for material removed. The back was replaced with 3mm ply that I ribbed to support properly. I glued up the bottom 2/3ds of the back first. Then sprung the neck back while gluing up the last third. This gave me the sacred back angle for my new floating bridge. And while the back was off I installed a piezo. The thing is amazing. It has sent me down an acoustical rabbit hole making my own cigar boxes now.
You just did what im about to do. I already got a guitar from the thrift store and was going to move the strings and turn it into a 3 string guitar. I just can't play a C cord. 1 finger hits 3 strings. Now your next project. Turn a Plastic Guitar Hero into a 3 string guitar. Im ready😊
There is a similar concept to this, but with a broken fiddle instead of a broken guitar, from appalachia. If the neck gets messed up on a violin, it was replace with a plank of wood and one or two string and called a 'spike fiddle', or if it had frets it was called a 'guitfiddle'
@@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar yeah it an Appalachian folk instrument along with dulcimers and wood-top banjos and auto-harps. the people in appalachia were very poor and had little, so if something precious and expensive like a violin brought over (from the home country of ireland) got broken, the remaining parts wouldn't go to waste...
Dude, your videos keep getting better and better. And as always, fun to watch. You got the crazy build section first, which by the way turned out incredible and sounds amazing. Followed by the always entertaining and informative kool cat noodling. And finally, a practical lesson for us beginners. Awesome, info packed video. Feeling blessed.
A multitool would cut through that for the new neck. I use a dremel tooth with a cut off wheel for lots of things like that. That old B&D sabre saw is the beast. I have my father's and it was my grandfather's before that.
A funny little tid bit to mention about this video, is the fact that just before drilling you ask the viewers to wish you luck. By the time we see the video, that sucker was drilled, played, and hung over the fireplace, lol. I still wished you good luck though. Enjoy your videos, and your information is being applied to my first builds. I'm currently on number 2. Chuck McCoy..
I absolutely love this build. I'm new into building cigar box guitars and diddley bows. I love the history and the sound. I absolutely love what you did here with this guitar!
That turned out sounding great Del. Am highly impressed. Am trying to get the courage up to experiment.... just not quite there yet. SO guess I'll just keep watching your informative and educational videos till then.
Funny thing about them resding glasses- i never needed anything of the kind until right around 45, then all the machinery started performing sub-optumally all at once! Lol
Del, you're like Frankenstein's monster's best mate!! I mean that in the nicest way. I do admire your 'where there's a will, there's a way' approach though it did make me wince in places!! The donor guitar looks like an old Hofner. I have a similar one with a broken neck at heal but l think I'll keep it a six string. Been meaning to repair it for a while...one day! Great job though Del. You've given it a new lease of life 👏👏
Just beautiful, love what you've done with the video graphics, please tell me what the fretting is,I've seen you use it before ,thanks for sharing your guitar makes , God bless you mightily..
I have a few "donor" guitars laying around that I've been thinking about reworking into something. Would love to use the existing necks but seems like the original necks would be absurdly wide. This is a timely video. Thanks!
Awesome dude!!! Really wanted to see the original tuning pegs used TBH however, the new ones did look better. The fret board confused the hell outta me as a DADGAD 6 string guitar player LOL. The more traditional fret board would be more my thing, and when i get to eventually own a 3 string CBG i would probably tune to DAD.
What do you think of the idea of having 3 small floating saddles instead of 1 to make adjusting intonation easier? I find it difficult after doing one string not to move it while adjusting another. Can you think of anything that would make that difficult/impossible?
0:55 … aw, Ken Pfalzgraf (Paul Mero Junkpile Guitars) could fix that … that could be buffed right out!! 10:54… almost…it’s measure once and cuss twice! 😉 18:24 … Mighty Mite!!! I love mine! I thought the blade on mine had gone dull after about 6 fretboards but all it was the teeth had been clogged with wood, I cleaned the blade… good as new! Always clean your blades!! 18:43 … I think you meant to say was 0.023 kerf… The table adjust knob on the Mighty Mite is very poorly designed and placed, there’s not enough space for a hand to properly grip the thing to tighten easily, it’s a pain! I made a tool that fits over the knob and extends out far enough to grasp and loosen and tighten it! It’s much much easier to make adjustments in the table height with the sled on. AND WOW! That guitar sounds great!!!
I think you are right. When I hold my dulcimer up next to your video they are different. I think the dulcimer only has 1 half note. But theoretically should be able to play it similar to what you did in the video?
What that means is when you do a C Chord it'll sound as a B Flat & actually Magma makes special strings for D Standard Tuning (GAT-D is the Model). That means this new 6 string Cigar Box Guitar transposes down a step from Concert pitch exactly like a B Flat Clarinet, B Flat Trumpet, & B Flat Soprano Sax.
Hey Del, thought you might have gone for a three string double. Something similar to your 4 string with the double high string. That sounded great, can just imagine the sound of doubling them all. So have at it. Like watching you figuring out these things as you work. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas.

awesome!!! 😎 dang!!!!
You are the mad scientist of CBG builds and I’m stoked watching you build every one of them. I’ve gotta try this one.
heheheee thanks bud
Mad scientist, lol
😂LOL. Body has chips, scraps and buckle rash yet doesn't want to scratch it. Your videos are always fun to watch.
heheheee i never noticed
Great job and funny too
Awesome. Kinda like a guitbass but with an appropriately sized neck for the three strings… looks like some real fun to play

You are the Master... Big Body Three String CBG! Who would have "thunk" it??? You did!!! Again... Long live DP and CBG!
this thing is a BEAST!!! loud as all get out
Got me a donor guitar. Thanks for the instruction , gonna build me one. Wont change a thing, cause yours sounds great. 😊

i watch Kevin at Modern Self Reliance and he uses the chain saw for everything
I really dig your fretting system ! And your playing is excellent
the diatonic/dulcimer scale sounds 'sweet', the pentatonic/blues scale sounds 'salty' lmao!

dive in… you won’t regret
I thought you weren't going to take the bridge off but you did and somehow if you recorded it....I missed it!
it actually just fell off…. it wasn’t glued like i had originally thought
Hey Del, that video made my day! I think my next build will get the same fretting. Seems good to get the ear for improvising....
Cheers Thomas
you’ll get a kick out of it for sure
It sounds great. And I do like your patented blues fret system. 🤔. Blessings for Christmas and all the best for 24. 🙏
Same to you!
Great vid Del. Makes those Guitar Center dumpsters more attractive.

i’m still deciding what to call it … any ideas ?? maybe the 4-3-2-1 fret spacing… or the 1-2-3-4 fret spacing??? 🤔
What a sound! I love the dulcimer fretting on this beauty! I love your videos Del 😊God bless 🙏
Glad you enjoy it! 😀
I thought about doing this. This is cool. 🤘
it was Fun!! and educational

@@PuckettCigarBoxGuitar Cool yes, you mentioned a 3 string bass guitar possibly with 3 of them. Love the vids man...thanks for reply!
Well you made hard work of getting that neck off Del is that 3.30 am Del it looks dark outside well done m8 loved it.
clock needs a new battery… it’s only right a few times a day
A heat gun & melt the glue ?
you’re probably right….
What do you think of the idea of having 3 small floating saddles instead of 1 to make adjusting intonation easier? I find it difficult after doing one string not to move it while adjusting another. Can you think of anything that would make that difficult/impossible?
thats why i use a balanced set of strings… so the saddle can be a. straight line (but tilted to accommodate for string thickness)

A 6 string CBG in Bb (DGCFAD) would be killer, let's hear it.
Very creative video Del! What do you call your "proprietary" fret spacing?
still debating
Measurements on frets ? These are awesome sounding.

How bout building a Picasso CBG out of multiple scrap pieces? 😊
sounds interesting

So,
now 20 frets are 10 frets too many?
😂
i can’t count that high
Hmmmmm, can I be a copycat?
you’ll have a blast
