- Unboxing my new cigar box guitar, followed by a short, incompetent demonstration :)
I bought my guitar from MisterStomp: www.misterstomp... (or just search for misterstomp on eBay)
Mr Stomp also has some videos on RUclips: @nicohatsoff
I watched a lot of cigar box guitar tutorials on RUclips, but this one from @CodaTuition was my favourite: • Cigar Box Guitar - 3 S...
(there is also a 'part 2' video for a slightly more involved version of this riff for intermediate players)
And now I'm off to practice on my lovely new guitar. Or maybe just stare at it for a bit.
Thanks for watching!
Find me on Instagram: @claythorpemusic
You give me hope! About to own one myself. Bless you!
The Wannabe Busker has a lot of info on cigar box guitars
You're so relatable and humble, and your demo sounds good :)
Haha, well thank you very much 🙂
The action is high as its primarily a slide guitar. I actually fret my CBG's.
Very cool instrument,..thank you for sharing. Delta Blues is very iconic music. Play on!
I’ve long listened to a bit of blues here and there and always enjoyed it, but now I’m taking the time to learn more about it and to really listen. I’m in love!
Nice one...I've had three CBGs in all from Mr Stomp...excellent value - always very well packaged - and nicely built...🤗🤗
A British Samantha Fish! You go girl!
Coda Tuition is very good. Glad you chose him and gave a shout out to him
Cool stuff.
Well, not really a "cigar box" guitar it's more of a constructed and decorated "box" guitar which is okay, a box is a box is a box 😉 hopefully this will not be your only box guitar but the start of a few more (for different tunings, scale lengths etc)!
If the underside of the neck had been rounded over (the edges look square) you'd find it would be easier to play (but, of course not cutting off the corners is a cost cutting corner 😆)
Good job, that sounded really cool! It might not be the wrong size of slide, but there are different types of slides. The slides that only fit over your knuckle is called a stubby. I have one of each for different types of playing. Keep it up!!
That was a well done video, thank you. Since you got this CBG about a year ago, I'm going to look at your later videos to see how much you've progressed.
Great video. It’s gonna take a little while but I think you’re gonna do really good with that I’m looking forward to hearing your advancing on this instrument. Also having the correct kind of strings and a right slide Is gonna help you a lot cheers.
Thank you! I haven’t had time to practice for a few days, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to it, and also to sorting the slide out! I know nothing about different types of string so will do some research 🧐
Nice! Ill check out Mr. Stomp. I build CBG's and actually sell them at my local Music Store. Nice Gitty. You will do great with it
They wrapped it really well.
They really did put the effort in, no way it was getting broken on it’s travels! 👍
I think you ARE natural friends, your recorder playing and the metronome have definitely played they’re part in you producing that wicked groove almost instantly. You’ve owned it so far girl. 🎅🏻🍰
Thanks! I can’t quite believe how much faster I’m starting to pick up new tunes. Turns out this practice stuff really does work… who knew! If I lived to be 300 or so I might be a half decent musician 😅
Great fun though.
Well done ! I’m currently looking forward to the arrival of my first cigar box guitar as well. I hope that by the end of this week I’ll be playing my first chords to accompany my harmonica. Greetings from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil 🇧🇷
You can play it lapstyle I think claythorpe mam❤🎉❤
I have a Fender Acoustasonic 15 amp also, and really like it.
That was great! You don't give yourself enough credit.
Well thanks! 🙃
I sub’d to see how you get along
Getting any better with the CBG? 🤞👍
i gotta' idea. why don't you watch the video?
Top Job , Pretty Lady.
So glad you're having lots of fun learning to play slide on your new CBG. Don't worry, you'll get it down. A couple suggestions, though. Go buy a shorter in length slide from a local music store that will feel comfy to your hand. You can try them out in the store. Next, and MOST important thing of all, dump out that tea and get you a pint of genuine Tennessee whisky. How you ever gonna be a badass hard rockin' blues girl while you drinkin' that English tea? It's just unheard of. Bad form. LOL Have FUN!
I am loving it so far, thanks! Definitely do need to sort the slide. A couple of people have suggested padding it out, so I’ll try that until I can get to the music shop.
Cannot ditch the tea. Sacrilege! Whisky IN the tea though… and we’ll all be happy 😆
@@ClaythorpeMusic Glad you're having fun with it. Enjoyed your video. Happy Easter!
Make your own stubby slide from a wine bottle, pvc tubing, brass tubing or sneak your boyfriend's deep-well socket! Lol. The King Slide from Shane Speal is my favorite for the CBG.
Great video. Love that sound , well done you, progress already and well done Mr Stomp for making such a thing. Here's to musical crafts people.
Thanks! I’m really enjoying listening to cigar box guitar music at the moment… (other people’s playing, not so much mine, ha).
And yes, let’s raise a toast to musical crafts people 🍷!
It's french fad-gi-le
It's Bubba wrap.
Thank you
Uuuu me muero de ganas por comprar una! Que genial!!
I’m going through a similar journey to you, just trying the recorder at the moment, that’s how I found your channel. I have some Cigar box videos on my channel if you fancy a gander. Cheers.
🤘
Leaflets are important. Hava look at the front. The highway signs, 61 and 49, as there is a story behind the highways known as the crossroads.
Your recorders and tin whistle in the background looking at you cheat on them openly with the next hot new thing in the neighbourhood 👀
Lol I keep telling the recorders the guitar is only a backing instrument and they are still the true stars, but they’re still in a huff with me 🤷♀️😆
@@ClaythorpeMusic Cause you puff with your smokey boi and they're J it's so cool
That was really good. Well done
You got this girl!
You don’t need to be able to bend your finger when you play side. If it feels like it’s slipping off your hand you can wrap a bunch of tissue around your finger to tighten it up. You can play it on your ring or little finger it’s all personal preference really. Good start though keep it up!
Thanks for the advice! I have got a shorter slide now, which feels more useable. I will have to pad it out still, though, thanks for the tip. Now I just need some practice time…
Excellent! Try packing the slide out with tissue to make it more comfortable :)
Ah great tip, I’ll give it a try. Thank you!
You might try putting a thin layer of padding in your slide for a tighter and better fit (plush some cushioning). 🙂
Thanks for the tip! I didn’t think of that, I’ll give it a go 👍 thanks.
Liked your new toy nice sound.you will soon need extension to your house for all your instruments.
I think Jono would rather I went and sat in the shed with them all!
A what? You go girl and get some yngvie malmsteen shredding done haha
Haha! I’ll do my best!
It has three strings--like a balalaika!
Hmmm I wouldn’t mind trying a balalaika! I have eyed them up in the past… must resist!
👍
Very 😎 cool. Gorgeous 😍 😍
You’re right, it definitely gives off cool vibes. If it could sit in the corner wearing shades and nonchalantly chewing a piece of grass, it would 😎
wow beuiful instrument
Yeah, over the past few days I think I’ve spent more time looking at it than playing it 👀
what fun! I play slide on my guitar open E tuning. Kepp it up!
Thanks! I’m looking forward to trying out different tunings further down the line.
@@ClaythorpeMusic be sure to post a video... I'm looking forward to hearing it!
Very nice
Thanks 🙂
Wow great playing
Thank you! I'm looking forward to getting plenty more practice!
@@ClaythorpeMusic 🤗
I just use a 1/2 inch size long socket as my slide.... they are smaller and the smaller slide allows me to pick the middle string only... There is also a guy on the internet that sells "stubby slides" specifically for CBGs, Shane Spiel.... he also has lessons on you tube, along with uncle Mark.....
I own multiple guitars , and they all sit in a corner now, since I built my first CBG it's all I play.
I did have a look at the stubby slides- I enjoy Shane's videos. I haven't had chance at all over the past couple of weeks to even pick up my CBG, but hopefully this week I will, and I'll get a slide sorted, thanks!
