As a yank I found the information on the Class 24 quite interesting. And your model review struck me as insightful and fair. You are indeed a good team!
Excellent video guys. I have a Suttons 24 and 2 Bachmann 24/1s. As Richard says the Suttons model wins hands down, but I'm still delighted with my Bachmann models. A little work on the original Bachmann 24 also produces a decent model. Filling the nose end door moulding lines and a repaint transforms it. Unlike Richard I could listen to the soundfile for hours, it takes me back to my youth.
An informative video guys, and an exceptionally good comparison of the Class 24s available as RTR. I obtained the Sutton version of the 97201 EXPERIMENT at the time of release, so I found this test interesting against the Bachmann locos. After watching this film, I wound say SLW do have the upper hand for the livery, detailing and sound, to capture these engines in a working service condition. So much so, that since released I have bought several of them in BR Blue and BR Green to run as double headers e.g. CONDOR. With the latest release of Heljan's Class 25s and the soon to be leased Sutton locomotives of the same Class. I would like to see a repeat of this comparison test of these models on a future Dean Park video episode.
I will eventually look to get a SLW 25, when they announce a Scottish variant. However I decided not go get the Heljan one after reviews I had seen. I’m sure it’s a good model. But I decided to save my cash for the SLW version.
Nice to have contribution from you both. The one thing which maybe should have been considered as part of the comparison is the price difference. Another enjoyable video, thank you to you both.
Well done guys, that’s a great video. Nice to see those locos running around and heating them as well. I must say, I like the format of this as well, good to see not only a comparison of the locomotives but also hearing the opinions from two different “experts” 😀
Nice video Dave. Yourself and Richard make a pretty good team when it comes to reviews. I would say the bachmann one would be the one for me but saying that the Sutton loco works one is also very nice.- Nicholas.
I have the Sutton one and it is the dogs danglies in terms of detailing, sound, and running quality, so much so I have pre order one of the new batches also. Just looking at the Bachmann and those massively thick cab handrails really put me off looking at it further
I have also the Sutton BR Blue 24009 which looks and sounds great. I still have the original DCC Sound Bachmann 24035 (2009 ?) but it is no match for the Sutton. However I still keep it. The large white handrails also on that early 24035 is more like eight handrails with a loco attached to it. Unfortunately and amazingly Bachmann still has got that very wrong on this new 24 ! I also have a Bachmann Class 25286 with great factory sound and ........... nice modest metal handrails !! So where is the logic ? I did order the new Class 25 from Sutton as well. ruclips.net/video/ABmL3MmnIMs/видео.html
Winning formula guys with two expert opinions in a considered & professional presentation.Hope there is plenty more of this form of collaboration to come from you both in the future.
Very much enjoyed your review of these two locos. My personal view is that the Bachmann example has the slightly more realistic sound project installed, even though the clarity of the SLW example is better. Having been brought up in Merioneth in the 1970s and starting work on BR at Machynlleth in 1978 you can imagine the BR Sulzers were what I cut my teeth on, from travelliing behind them in passenger service to working with them on shunting tasks etc. DCC sound is really very subjective but I feel the most important factor people in the hobby need to understand is how the power is controlled by the driver, and this how it sounds from the diesel exhaust. When the driver takes power especially as a light locomotve the controller is moved from the "off" ie idle position to the "on" position. Thiere is virtually no audible difference in these two positions but there is some power to the motors and the loco will move with the brakes released. Moving from a siding or around a depot the speed will be low so the driver will be selecting a low power setting, although there are no notches on the controller after the "on" position, so the driver might give the controller say 25% or 30% to give the motors a burst of power then the controller will be returned to the "on" position, and maybe to the "off" position where the loco will coast at idle. This is very important to recreate in model form using the more recent decoder capabilities, giving the opportunity forthe loco or train to tickover at idle whilst moving. In this regard I think the SLW sound project gives the loco far too much power at initial power application, but this demonstrates the difference between running light locomotive, or simulating a higher power setting for hauling a train. Both locomotives are very nice and I have to declare four Bachmann 24s, and cannot wait for the class 25 with the earlier body styling from Bachmann - disappointed that SLW are only intending to produce the later bodystylingfor their class 25. Thanks again .
The class 24 is far from my favorite loco however my sound fitted Sutton class 24 is the best model I have ever owned and I would not sell it for all the tea in china. I was especially lucky as I bought it for a great price second hand before the prices seemed to go up. I look forward to the promised 24/1s with the highland headlamps. Great video.
Excellent video Dave, nice to hear both 24's and I agree with you and Richard that the Sutton class 24 does sound better. Thank you to both of you for this review. Jonathan.
Great video and comparison of a great model. I prefer the Suttons, but you haven't been able to get it for 18 months now. Suttons was given a great grandstand review in Hornby magazine in summer 2020, but again by the time of that publication they'd sold out. Popular model and rightly so. Very happy with my Bachmann version. Think Suttons missed a trick on gauging the popularity of this model. Well done Bachmann. Be great to see you upgrading chip and speaker(s) if you do. Cheers folks, enjoyed that.
I was the same. By the time I tried to get one they were sold out! Sutton is the better all rounder, but that’s not to say I ain’t really happy with my Bachmann one, it’s a great model in its own right.
This is a useful video and is what is sorely lacking in the Model Railway world - useful comparisons between different manufacturers versions. For example, I want a 47, I go on EBay or Hattons or wherever - loads of options, which is best for what? Please do other classes!! :-) Also, what would really enhance these videos would be some actual photos of the real thing so we can judge for ourselves re: fuel gauges or colour schemes etc. Really enjoyed the video though, thanks a lot!
Hi. So glad you liked it. I’ll be doing a similar comparison as new models come out. I did one on the new v old Bachmann class 20 last month. Check that out. Regarding the actual photos…I have to be Careful as a lot of them are copyright and not mine to show. That’s why they are lacking sadly. Cheers Dave
Memory might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure she got a repaint before she got named and became a mainly open day celebrity hence we Bach one is bright and shiny with darker roof and Sutton one is pre naming and tarting up
Great video thank you both.if I didn't have a Sutton's would buy the bachmann any day of the week.it was such a pleasure to watch a constructive review.
Hi Dave and Richard. I great review of two great locomotives. I think I would comment on the fact the SLW product is slightly older now than the Bachmann one, yet is still up to standard or slightly above the Bachmann one. The sound I think knocks socks off of the Bachmann one, as you get different sounds depending how you accelarate the loco, same with the horn too. Also I think you get a much better package all round with SLW and their highly regarded biscuit tin presentation. The price, well the SLW one is slightly more than the Bachamann one, but I think you get a better more polished product which deserves a higher price point, but it is only a little bit more really. No, I don't have any connection to SLW except being a happy owner of one Class 24. Great video though, thanks and all the best to you both, Dave.
Well done guys great review and comments on the models. Enjoyed the history run down very informative. Found the lighting could have been better to highlight the buffer beam details just a note for future reviews. Well done overall.
Thanks guys. That’s a brilliant video to watch, and you guys make an excellent presenting team. For me the Sutton one is better, especially in the under frame area. The Sutton one also sounds so much better. That said I would be more than happy with either. It will be interesting to see where Sutton Loco works goes from here. Thank you again guys. Keep up the great work. 👍
Great review Dave, it's strange that Bachmann are putting chunky handrails and wheel rims on the 24. The two sound class 25s I've had for years have fine wire hand rails and thin wheel rims.
I had a first batch Sutton 24, and when I turned on the sound….WOW. Yes it has more finesse over the Bachmann one. My biggest gripe though was the droopy NEM pockets. Having gone up to O it’s irrelevant lol. Richard, remember you don’t have to have sound on and even then you can still play with horns etc
Hi, superb honest review, I have the Bachmann version with sound, I’m very happy with it, I was wondering what the coaches are between the loco and the 2 RTC liveried coaches? Thanks for sharing.
Hi, thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed watching. The two coaches are research and test coaches, but in a different livery from the RTC red and blue. They are a mates and I just had them for the video. They are Bachman coaches and I believe they were a limited edition twin pack, from a few years ago.
A very acceptable loco there Dave, would definitely get one of the new bachmann class 24s myself, they look great in my opinion, would really like the departmental version if I do get one
Hi Dave I enjoyed the video but would have been surprised if the Bachmann model came out on top even as good as the retool is, the SLW model is by far the best model of any UK loco I've seen. Iam biased as I have two in my fleet and they run and sound amazing. However there is one drawback with the SLW 24 and that is cost, its price tag is huge and I can only see this increasing as new models come out. I have a 24/1 from Bachmann and it does compare well against the SLW and so does the Heljan 25 and both can be improved massively with Roads and Rails twin speaker set up. I do find most other models are poor in comparison to the SLW 24 but with up and coming new releases coming soon hopefully that may soon change. Of course SLW also have their new 25 coming and I'm sure it will be amazing but I'm not sure it will be in my very limited budget. David Clarke produced a superb book on the 24/25 and it is well worth hunting out if you like counting rivets and is useful to any modeller. There are couple of photos that look like the doors on one end of 97201 are not welded? Keep up the great work Cheers Paul 👍
Great review team 👍 For me the Sutton wins hands down as the paint work looks faded, therefore making it look more realistic, whereas the Bachmann one looks much more plastic.
You must have watched a lot of it to know That we “drone” on and on. Thanks, but no one was forcing you to endure it. Don’t like, click on another video. Simples.
Hi thanks. Well it was an opportunity we had when he was up in the area for holiday. If the opportunity comes along to collaborate again it would be good. Cheers. Dave
I remember in early 1980 when a class 24 substituted a class 40 on the Manchester Victoria-Holyhead-Manchester Victoria with a rake of 8 or 9 Mk1’s. Clearly less powerful than the Whistler that was booked, but maintained it’s scheduled timings to within about 5 minutes each way-although it sounded like a sickly pensioner the soundtrack was one I will never forget.
@@DeanPark Longsight Diesel & Electric depots at Manchester; Wigan (Springs Branch) could provide some interesting motive power for summer workings. Ah the joys of bagging the windows in the coach directly behind the loco, and listening to the beasts awaken as the drivers gave their charges some oomph to get them moving. train travel nowadays is a sterile affair.
Looking at pics of real locos the fuel gauges appear on one side and not the other, but at both ends of the tanks on the same side. The quarterlight should be at the same level but had the addition of a frame around it which gave the impression of looking bigger.
Enjoyed the review thanks. The Bachman definitely has 'chunkier' details and the LSL sound is much more realistic. What about prices? Head to head detail of No1 ends: Main grill - LSL finer but can't see the diagonal body part; You can't compare RHS with LHS. - there were many detail differences (e.g. guages), so need to check. Anyway, great quality video and sound.
Morning guys. What an excellent review on the classic class 24 by two really dedicated model railway enthusiasts 😀 it was the first Bachmann sound loco I bought about 10 years ago and it’s still going strong 😂
Thanks both. Interesting and informative video. It really looks like Bachmann have done a good job on the new tooling, given there's "best bits" on both the Bachmann and the SLW. The fineness of the handrails and - something you didn't mention - of the window "posts" on the SLW, together with the less glossy plasticky appearance, make the SLW the winner for me. Is it just an optical illusion, or is the new Bachmann slightly smaller (width and height) than the old Bachmann and the SLW?
I just got the Bachmann one and am pleased with it .The sound is not as good as Suttons but running wise it performs well and looks good hauling a test train. I think your review was very good and hope you can do some more together. Maybe a hol. down at Richards area next year Dave.
Whilst the Bachman 24 is certainly better than their previous offering, the SLW version has a 'finesse' about it that the Bachman one just doesn't have. Really surprised Bachmann haven't done anything about the awful cab door handrails. Given the relatively small difference in price, it is still SLW all the way for me.
Great review ! I like both models but I have the SLW 24 and it wins it for me particularly with the sound but 1 question . Do they use the same sound file? I know the SLW sound is Paul Chetters work . Is the Bachmann version the same albeit with not as good speaker arrangement ?.
It's a great video with both of you pointing out different items of detail and sound. In the opening shots, it appears that the Bachmann version has one wheel bearing end cap not painted yellow. Was this a mistake by Bachmann or is it correct? Martin. (Thailand)
Hi Dave anther great video mate I really injoy it every interesting the class24 locos are every interesting I would like a model Rachel class84 loco some time in the future stay safe and well mate goodbye for how clive in N Ireland
On the yellow panels, personally suttons yellow looks closer to BR Kingcup yellow which is what was used on locos during the time(and earlier) 97201 was painted, the Bachmanns yellow looks more like the modern Spec 81 yellow used which would be correct for modern locos and units panels but not something from the 80s.
For me, in looks the Sutton version wins hands down. Just based on the model not comparing to the real item. The new Bachmann falls down with those overscale handrails and window dividers etc. The Sutton unit seems far more finessed. Having said that, unless they were side by side I'd be happy with either of the 2 newer models. Nice review guys.
Could be wrong here.. but don't remember the Experiment nameplates being so in your face ... might of been smaller on a wood plate .... long time ago so could be wrong 🤔😁
The only down point for me with my SLW class 24 in RTC livery is that the nameplates are supplied as waterslide transfers rather than being printed on like with the Bachmann one, though that is definitely not a deal breaker especially if you pay the extra for the super cap stay alive, absolutely no chance of the loco stalling if power is disrupted. I like the SLW ones so much I have 3 of them 😁
With respect to the cab ends of 97201. Firstly, the doors were never plated over. I have a close-up of the loco at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley, diesel gala 1986 and the doors are very much original. The Sutton Locomotive Works version is far closer to the original, especially when it comes to the valance and the seam between it and the front of the cab. However, even Sutton’s version has an incorrect shape underneath the door as on the original the valance thins towards the centre of the doors. I wish that I could post a photo to show you.
Having looked at a number of class 24 images this monring and focused upon the valance under the connection doors it looks as though Sutton have modelled the original design correctly. However, in service the valance became deformed by cupplings being hammered into the steel as trains were hitched, reshaping the steel so that the valance thinned up to the rivet line.
This was am interesting video, but the detail discussion was good but I wished you had covered things like directional lighting. The level of detail can be um "Ho Hum" as most locomotives have a good level of detail anyway but still it's important. I want to buy a class 24 research locomotive and was hoping for more about the mechanism, lighting , pulling power, pricing stuff like that. As for sound not really for me so that was boring. Sorry for that but I was hoping for more. I did enjoy the history thought that was most interesting. Stay safe.
Hi thanks. Pulling power between loco brands is pretty negligible, as they all haul more than enough stock with ease. Being a class 24 the length of train would never have been massive, due to the power of the real loco. So coupling it up to say 12 mk1 Coaches to test the models power would have been pointless and unrealistic. Pricing, ok, point taken. But it’s easy to Google that. Thanks for your feedback though… I do usually cover the lighting etc in my videos and will do so in future. Cheers.
What about the glazing? To me, it is the very character of any British locomotive. They are different sizes. Many reviews now focus on colour tone or DCC sound. Yes, they all go neee nooor, in a very unconvincing way, but to me, it's the body accuracy that's paramount.
Good comparison of the two locos. As they are essentially the same loco, however, it just comes down to personal preference - shiny and new or slightly weathered. To my ear (old and dulled by years of heavy metal!) there's not much in it in the sound department. Cheers
Both generations of the Bachmann 24's have cab handrails that look too thick and heavy, maybe this is because of the colour of them but there is a good case for replacing them with new handrails I think - anybody any ideas ? They were flat bars on the real locos but making thinner replacements from metal would make them very fragile and liable to bend. The Sutton cab handrails are much finerI was not keen to see the 'new' Bachmann model still had the 'goggle eyed' glazing. The buffer beam fittings and hoses etc are a big step up from the earlier Bachmann.
@@DeanPark that’s why I’m back couldn’t have your career ruined because of me. What am I due back as I have saved you and your family from financial ruin?
Hi SLW did do a green class 24, but maybe not unsurprisingly they all sold out, even their second production run sold out too. I think you could say though, at this time, SLW doesn't have any Class 24's as they have all sold out I think.
@@stretchedits yeh right now they are indeed taking payment for a new batch, but non of them fit the era and region of my layout. Doesn't help that non of the older models ever show up on second hand websites when I search for them. There are indeed older releases for my specific time and place, but I can never find them second hand.
@@treinenliefde SLW are taking orders for their new Class 25, but that is a bit new for my layout. Your right, you very rarely see the Class 24 come up on the second hand market, I think I saw one on Ebay once and one on Hattons, but that was damaged..............I guess that says alot, that people who buy one, don't want to let them go once they have one...........I know SLW is a very small company, run by enthusiasts who are happy to talk on the phone, might be worth giving them a ring to see what they have lurking around in a back corner somewhere.
No contest between the SLW 24 and the Bachmann 24. Bachmann 24 lacks detail that the SLW has and has the stupid toy like join across the lower cab front.
I only witnessed the 24's towards the end of their lives and they always looked like the mongrels of the first diesel generation. They just don't look right in Ex-Works livery, but they do look like good models.
Good to see you guys are able to meet again and team up for fun and reviews.

Great review Dave, it's strange that Bachmann are putting chunky handrails and wheel rims on the 24. The two sound class 25s I've had for years have fine wire hand rails and thin wheel rims.
They probably look chunkier than they are because they are white and stand out. But they are a bit on the hefty side! Cheers. Dave
Nice pair of diesels!! Not what I collect, but I’m a steam man!!
Cheers. Yeah they are nice models :-)
Ah the latest sound decoders don’t sound the horns when the engine is not on. So he will just have to buy a full fat sound loco and fire it up lol
@@DeanPark It’s such a shame Bachmann won’t release those coaches again, they probably cost a fortune on Greedbay.
A very acceptable loco there Dave, would definitely get one of the new bachmann class 24s myself, they look great in my opinion, would really like the departmental version if I do get one
Very good model. And a big step up from their first one!
Hi Dave
I enjoyed the video but would have been surprised if the Bachmann model came out on top even as good as the retool is, the SLW model is by far the best model of any UK loco I've seen.
Keep up the great work
Cheers Paul 👍
Hi, thanks for that. Yeah I’d say they look welded, rather than plated. Cheers. Dave
Very nice video Dave
Great review team 👍 For me the Sutton wins hands down as the paint work looks faded, therefore making it look more realistic, whereas the Bachmann one looks much more plastic.
Yeah I like what they’ve done to make it look faded.
I really want an SLW one but they’re all out of stock
God this video went on. Richards voice then the drone of daves voice.
You must have watched a lot of it to know That we “drone” on and on. Thanks, but no one was forcing you to endure it. Don’t like, click on another video. Simples.
Really enjoyed this collaboration, will you be doing any more ? 👍
Happy days. I wish I’d been old enough to go train spotting in the early 80’s. Loco hauled heaven.
Very good presentation. 😃👍
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed this one. Dave
Cheers. Dave
Hi Dave. Hope you don't mind me asking, the esu 50210 what does, hw version 2.1.1/sw version 4.2.5 mean .
Isn’t that the version of software it has?!
@@DeanPark thanks Dave. So if I get one of the esu controllers I just update it on computer. Like the elite.
Morning guys. What an excellent review on the classic class 24 by two really dedicated model railway enthusiasts 😀 it was the first Bachmann sound loco I bought about 10 years ago and it’s still going strong 😂
Cheers Stevie. Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks both.
Cheers. Yes it is just an optical illusion, I thought the same myself 😆
@@DeanPark oh good, I was wondering the same myself.
I just got the Bachmann one and am pleased with it .The sound is not as good as Suttons but running wise it performs well and looks good hauling a test train. I think your review was very good and hope you can do some more together. Maybe a hol. down at Richards area next year Dave.
Haha. A holiday….what is that?!!
@@DeanPark Aww No hols not good. I have not been away for a couple of years now either but at least have days out now.
Hi, that’s interesting. Thanks for your thoughts. Dave
Thanks Clive.
Cheers. That is very helpful. Dave.
Cheers Gerry. Yeah both good models and on its own the Bachmann one is impressive. Dave
nice video dave, thank you richard for the history on the loco, dave would you have the name of the end music please
Hi, it’s staccato from the yourube library
@@DeanPark thank you dave
It should be pointed out that the Sutton's model is about £350 now to buy 2nd hand and the bachmann £225 new with sound.
Top vid 👌👍👍👍👍
Excellent video.
Subscrito
Thanks :-)
I have a Bachmann class 24 it's a excellent model.
Yeah I’m more than pleased with mine.
Could be wrong here.. but don't remember the Experiment nameplates being so in your face ... might of been smaller on a wood plate .... long time ago so could be wrong 🤔😁
Rail squeak on the Sutton sounds sounds good but it wont fit on some track
The only down point for me with my SLW class 24 in RTC livery is that the nameplates are supplied as waterslide transfers rather than being printed on like with the Bachmann one, though that is definitely not a deal breaker especially if you pay the extra for the super cap stay alive, absolutely no chance of the loco stalling if power is disrupted. I like the SLW ones so much I have 3 of them 😁
They are amazing models. Bit weird about the nameplate though!
Hi, thanks. Yeah we looked over photos of it. It’s not perfect but as you say, either is the Sutton.
Cheers.
SLW all the way, a much more finely detailed model than the Bachmann, the sound on the SLW
is absolutely fantastic.
It does sound terrific doesn’t it!
Cheers
Yup both lovely sounding models. :-)
Not been here in a while Dave.
🤦♂️ I did wonder why my views had gone down. ;-)
@@DeanPark that’s why I’m back couldn’t have your career ruined because of me. What am I due back as I have saved you and your family from financial ruin?
Excellent in all respects!
Cool, glad you enjoyed it.
No prices for both locos this could be a consideration
£250 for Bachmann, £330 for Sutton.
Bachmann already beats the Suttons Locomotive Works model for me since SLW doesn't produce one in all over green at this moment...
Suttons is much better. 👍
