I grew up in Southern Maryland and watched the transition from Penn central to conrail On the “ Popes Creek Subdivision “ now run by CSX seeng those blue locomotives all the way to the early 1990’s. I moved to North Carolina and it NS and from time to time-a ACL cars would showup.
God how I hated seeing those EL units teamed up w/filthy PC diesels their road name painted over w/a sad simple "CR!" But, gradually Conrail earned my respect.

Unfortunately popes creek is just about finished. Both power plants are closed.

PC was doomed to fail from the start although being forced to take on the NH was what sealed their fate.
the NH railroad was a complete and total basket case. PC was a mess from the start but the inclusion of the NH hobbled it even more.
