Thank you for sharing this. I love the sound of trains running over joint rail. All those boxcars and no graffiti , and trains with cabooses .
Born in 77. Amazing. Long live big blue!
Jack, you need to combine all your older CR stuff and make a DVD for us LOL. Love it all man!
Great footage. A classic era that is long gone, as is the railroad itself.
Wow, never thought I'd see a U25B running with an F Unit!
WELL YOU DID NOW
Great video to watch. Liked those scenes at Cove, Pa location. That's where I go in the Harrisburg region to capture NS at work on the Pittsburgh main to video myself the East/West freight traffic passing by.
I'll never get tired of seeing your old stuff, thanks
WOW, that piggy back train around 4:30 sure looked scary. For how fast they were going, I thought for sure one of those flat "cars" would tip over. LOVE this vintage footage, keep it coming!!!!!
+sk8ersbus1 Railfans today are used to well-maintained track. Back in that era tho, especially on the PC, rough track like that was normal. I bet the guys on the rear of that train about had whiplash the way that caboose was bouncing around!
Interesting Seatrain container @4:06. It looks like the front had a roll down door and the rear a traditional set of doors. The logo near the front looked like the Utility?
Conrail and Chessie System were similar in their approach to the F units they inherited. Both lines knew the old Fs were on the way out and would need overhauls, and not either road painted any Fs in their new schemes because there were no long-term plans to keep those units. The Western Maryland Fs were said to be well-kept, though.
Classic vid!
Nice old 8mm footage, thank you for sharing 🥂
Very nice work. It's the best I've seen from film to digital.
That was awesome! Takes me right back to my teen years! Bob...
Excellent video. Thank you Jack.
Great video! Beautiful old images with trains! Good job, Jack! Thumbs Up
Greetings from Romania
Andrew
+LDEGM Thanks Andrew, and glad you are enjoying this going on 40 year old stuff. Happy New Year from the States, and thnks for watching...
Happy New Year too! ;)
All the best - Andrew
1976, man! That's impressive
Now, THAT is what you would call the epitomy of "70s railroad porn" lol ... we will call this "Jack MP 294.5 Does Conrail Black And Blue" lol ... in all seriousness excuse my strange sense of humor lol ... probably THEE most amazing railroad video compilation I've ever seen... especially since it was filmed between 1976 and 1979 on Super 8
LOL. Thanks David. Glad you enjoyed this old stuff.
Did you see any lehigh and hudson river Alcos? The lehigh and Hudson river, Lehigh, and new England (which was abandoned but had a few miles purchased by CNJ) and the Ann Arbor railroad were the smallest and barely recognized railroads that were merged into conrail
L&HR came into Allentown a good bit. Caught them on 35mm film, no video. The best one was a set of H&HR Alco's on a ballast train, with one C420 painted Conrail blue, which wasn't supposed to happen, since they were being sold. www.flickr.com/photos/jackdk/17468922610/in/album-72157654980336275/
@@1jackdk I think the one in conrail blue was pretty interesting. I saw that delaware and hudson acquired about 3 Alcos from L&HR, and theres maybe 2 in use today
Good video thanks for sharing
Great Footage! Finally some real sound authentic to the footage! I hate when people mesh in sounds because they had no sound on their camera! makes you realize how easy everything is today with iPhones! back in the 1970's you were lucky if you could record sound....
It was pretty tough back then, and it got pretty expensive as well. But I'm sure glad I did it. Thanks for watching.
All right...cool video. Some early EMD locos, looked like a few GE U-23B's...did i see an Alco or two? I loved the footage of the Rockview Bridge since I live in Harrisburg, PA
Awesome video Brother
I miss old days
Jack, you blew me away with this one! This was a nice video, thanks for digging through the archives, converting, and uploading. I loved the E-8 in the beginning and the shot from Peekskill. The shot is much different now, I presume. One last thing - the TV symbol - did it stand for trucks/vans trains or what? Keep this type of video coming and enjoy the rest of your day.
+Donald Conklin Thanks Don. Yah! TV stood for "Trailer Van" and from what I understand, the lower the number the higher priority train. TV-1 is a hot train.
+jackmp294.5™ You're welcome! Thanks for the info.
+jackmp294.5™ Do you know anything about the CSX/NYSW TV-18 that used to run? If so, was it an everyday type deal? Also, what would've been the origin and destination - Binghmaton as the origin and Little Ferry as destination?
+Donald Conklin Don. The train was coast to coast and started in 1985. It originated on the BN at Tacoma WA. It was handed over to Chessie System in Chicago and ran into New Castle PA, where it, then ran over the B&P (still owned by Chessie at the time) from New Castle to Buffalo. The D&H picked it up at Buffalo with NYS&W power for the trip over the Southern Tier to Binghamton, with NYSW crews taking it to Little Ferry. On Chessie, it was train SLEB/SLWB. On the NYSW it was 257/258. It was a daily train. I use to deliver to Punxsitawny and DoBois in the mid 80's, and would see the Chessie powered e/b every trip sometime between 1400 and 1600 hours. Never took any pictures of it there, but I got a bunch of video of it in NJ when I went to visit family.
+jackmp294.5™ Ok Jack. Thanks for your time and the info. Looking forward to your videos!
Black and blue is so appropriate, not just the paint on the engines, but how beat up the system was after Penn Central.
No rockin', rollicking trains.
I'd imagine that mainly, new Conrail had such a wide selection of routes to use, that they could avoid the bad Penn Central track, among others.
Track was still pretty bad back in early Conrail years, and it took them a while to get it back to good standards. Things were a mess back then...
Yep and certain main lines were worse than others, depending on what kind of shape they were in when either the PRR or NYC passed them along.
wicked old footage
ya GOTTA post some to the CONRAIL group on face book. Very Very nice
Great video Jack thank you for sharing..
Thanks LLP, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for watching...
jackmp294.5™ You're welcome & absolutely, really enjoyed the video. :-)
those alcos are cool
The closest thing we have to a time machine!
Your not kidding. I sure do miss those days. Thanks for watching...
Loved it Jack!
good old boxcars!
Conrail inherited F-units, but I don't think a one of them were painted in the bright Royal blue scheme. Same with Chessie System.
There was only one F unit painted Conrail blue. It was #1648. No can openner. Just a white number on the rear of the unit. There were no F's that made it into Chessie paint at all. Thanks for watching.
If you have anything from the panhandle line from Carnegie to wierton I would love to see it
This is a stupid question, but I'll ask it. Did trains even have that squeal they do now you hear while it's passing? It's hard to hear though.

Thanks for subscribing Dennis, and hope you enjoy. There is plenty to see. Thanks for watching...

So Jack, did you do all this with the same ektasound 240?
Yes I did David.
Oh alright.. So everything on your channel in super 8 was with an ektasound 240? I've been thinking about getting either a 240, 250 or 260 myself. I don't know of anything better for low light situations... You always only used the built in mic right?
How did you convert your 8mm film?
+s0nnyburnett I sent to a friend to be used for his production of RR videos, and he had them digitaized. The machine cleans and digitalizes the film frame by frame. I think there are companies out there that will transfer it for you. But I have no idea what they charge.
jackmp294.5™
Lucky you. It's wicked expensive to have it sent off.
+s0nnyburnett I sent you a "PM" with some information, that might help you out. Its a win-win for you, if you have what he's looking for.
