Just a word of caution, elderberries can adversely interact with several prescription medications, especially any high blood pressure meds. I found out the hard way and had to be hospitalized. Instead, I made a mixture of tumeric, lemon, cayenne, ginger, cinnamon and honey and it works great when you start to feel under the weather.
It depends on your personal preferences. I add 1/4 cup lemon juice, 2-3 tablespoons of honey, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, 1 teaspoon turmeric and hot water to fill my 20 ounce mug
I have a tip regarding the fermentation weights. I just have never seemed to remember to order them from Amazon so I just do without them. My tip is to use the 4 oz canning jars with wide mouth canning jars. I fill the small jar with whatever liquid I'm using and the weight holds everything under the liquid line. You can then use your fermentation nipples or whatever you use to ferment. And you can still screw on the canning ring if necessary. Also add onion to your fire cider. It ups the antioxidants exponentially. Add honey to sweeten the fire cider.
Im in upstate SC and while I'm watching this we have been about 2 hours since power went off. We've had constant heavy rains from before hurricane and after it made landfall. I'm lucky my husband set up a whole house generator powered by natural gas. My husband said that over half the residents in our county r without power. Prayers for all in the path of this storm and all the workers having to deal with the aftermath.
omggg i *just* finished making a car emergency kit/bag for my husband and my cars...Has a battery jumper and tire inflator, a tarp, a couple ponchos, Fix-a-Flat, a fire blanket, a Life Vac (to be used if someone is choking on something), CPR masks, an fairly extensive first aid or even creeping into light trauma kit with meds for adults, children AND our dog, a leash, muzzle, and collapsible bowl for the dog, a water proof pouch with a small fire starting kit, a flashlight, and spare cell phone battery pack...I've got SO much stuff crammed into a simple backpack and still have ideas for other things that would be nice "just in case."
Wonderful to come down from the kitchen & find your newest video! Thank You so much for sharing these wonderful recipes with us! It is a miserable Wind & Rain warning day here on Vancouver Island so this seems very fittting :)
Growing up we had lots of elderberry plants all over the farm as well as blackberries. We always canned it as juice and that way we could make syrup, jelly, or have to make a glaze. If you use local honey from your area it's healthier for you. Just read a study on allergies and it showed local had more health benefits.

Southern Mexico is being affected by both hurricanes, John from the Pacific, and Helene in the Gulf of Mexico. Torrential rain, minimal power outages so far but landslides have shut down our only road out of our mountain village. No end in sight yet. We are ok though. One house, and the oldest building in town have collapsed.

My Mom and Grandma would make a drink with elderberries and with a thickener which we called atole in Spanish. They would add water and mash the berries and strain into a pot to boil. Not sure if they used corn starch or flour to thicken. They also added sugar to sweeten. It was so delicious both hot ir cold from the fridge. It wouldn't last very long. Lol. Hi Jessica and sweet family! Oh I lose power on a sunny day. It is very good to be prepared for anything. My aunt always kept whiskey for when she started feeling sick, she called them hot toddies. Pineapple juice is good for mucus cutting properties. My grandmother had an elderberry bush next to her garage. Good advice and thanks for sharing. Have a very blessed night everyone!
I’ve made my own elderberry syrup but haven’t in the last couple years since we moved tho I need to get back to it. I need to do fire cider too.ive never frozen elderberry syrup.
Elderberry syrup for pancakes is awesome. Make it just like jelly but only use half of the pectin. It will thicken like syrup but won't set like jelly.
Hi sweet one! I love the colors of your fire cider. That looks so pretty in the jar. I know it is not the purpose of it, but it is so pleasant to look at...lol!!! I bet that elderberry syrup is yummy! Great job!! Big hugs and many blessings!
My family eats lukewarm soup made from rosehip with a little lightly wipped cream for dessert on Christmas eve. My mother picks them, dry them early in fall and at Christmas she soaks them in water and then used the water to make the soup. She adds an ingredient to make the soup thicker but I don't know what it's called in english. It a type of flour we use to make soups and sauces a little thicker. It's made from potatoes and we only use about a tablespoon and a tiny bit of water.
I'm with you on 1st aid. My 26 year old son at the time had a stroke. Fast forward he is 30 and recovered beautifully from the stroke other than the time forgotten only knowing what we told him. Medically he was put on the blood thinner warfarin. The slightest gash ,cut, bruise leaves him needing multiple bandaids, gauze and tape, antibacterial meds and wash. Thank you for including the warning about being careful qhen taking these tinctures and syrups if you take prescription meds.
