One of their most underrated songs.
Sadly this is true
It’s so good though
Totally agree!
I cry everytime I listen to this song. You don´t have to be christian to understand these lyrics, they can touch every soul!
true
You also don't have to have a religious grandfather, but yes I agree
True 🥺
"God only helps those who learn to help themselves. He was a million miles from a million dollars, but you can never spend his wealth."
More amazing lyrics from Ryan.
I agree, although all of Ryan Tedder's lyrics are beautiful.❤️
CPmuddle27 you read my mind
This is probably my favorite One Republic song.
same
+Tori C. (Victori Adler) my to I like this one
same
yeah me too
agree
I have/had three grandfathers ( my mother, fathers, and step-fathers) I grew up and loved every single one of them, and they all taught me different things. My fathers father was very religious and taught me about God. My step-father loved everyone he knew and taught me to love one another, and my mothers father, was raised in a working family, and has been working since he was nine, he teaches me what any easy life I have been given. I love this song because it reminds me, that even though I lost two of my grandfathers, they will always be with me.
+Summer Walston thank you for such beautiful memories shared with us! God bless you so much and save your soul and the ones you love!
+Summer Walston Awesome! You are so lucky to have all that love in your life. Thanks for sharing. I'm inspired!
I only had one grandfather who was part of my life. He was an actual preacher. This song really hits deeply, since as of 2015, it's been 6 years since he's been with us. He had a wisdom that you couldn't buy and was a man of God who loved all and was loved by all. This song really makes me miss and appreciate him even more so than I already do. I miss you grandpa. 💔
buy* Why autocorrect me? =/
+Trikxty i truly don't underestimate or take your truest feelings and emotions towards your precious grandfather for granted but i encourage you to use those precious memories you had with him to help you mend that precious heart of yours..
anthony psilocybin It would have to exist first. =/
Trikxty you haven't seen it though
+anthony psilocybin Because she can't see it. Nothing exists there.
God helps those who CAN'T help themselves. He gives life, existence, strength, if it weren't for him no one could help themselves.
yah i love this song but that's a really strange lyric
good point
you are so right!
If you continually feel sorry for yourself or are unhappy with the cards you've been dealt or feel what you have is not enough, you'll automatically attract more of that. It is because it is your dominant way of thinking. The greater your gratitude for the things you do already have can only open doors of abundance. That can start with a prayer, one small positive thought, etc., until it is habit. The lyrics mean pick yourself up, dust yourself off, b e l i e v e and watch miracles happen. It's because you decided to focus on good. That's what it means .. "God helps those who l e a r n to help themselves" the choice is ours. Cheers
No! You have it all wrong! Jesus tought us to help ourselves, and we continue to do so by getting jobs, as says the phrase, if you want to succeed, you must try. You can't get a job without going to an interview, you cant help yourself, gods not gonna help you, thats how we learn. we dont give a child candy untill they say please, but we dont say pleaase for them do we?
When i was little kid (4-5y) my grandfather was like this to me his whole life! He died when i was 11y old. I was not aways kind to him and there was so many things left unsaid... This song reminds me of him, he was like guardian angel aways forgiving my mistakes. I love him! This song is awesome!!!
:)
for those of u who go to church this song was touching. God bless One Republic
You don't have to go to church for it to be touching.
I'm not at all religious nor do i want to be and this was seriously beautiful. "He was a million miles from a million dollars, but you could never spend his wealth" is one incredible example of how this song doesn't appeal to just those who are religious in a way to make it touching
This is why I don't go to church. Church people single out others.
Like, my relationship is with God. We are on good terms. I don't need to publicize or materialize that relationship. I also don't need to be apart of some club that believes they are more elite. That doesn't create peace and peace is what I believe in.
I don't mean to step on people's toes, but hell that's what I think and I said it. Feel free to hate on it.
ArinnMackenzie
im sorry if u feel singled out. i apologize
Benjarly Etienne It's toooo laaate to Apoligiiiiiize, it's toooo laaate.
This song teaches you that God is with you every day! He is always by your side, and will always be there for you. I thought this was moving, plus one if you thing so too!
He said God on helps those
Who learn to help themselves
He was a million miles from a million dollars
But you can never spend his wealth!!!!!!!!
~LOVE THAT LINE ^.^~
~Hold on I'm putting this quote on the wall of my room~
:D
love that line too!
mochiichim imimmimmmmm
God rocks!!! He's always with you
I love OneRepublic!!!! their songs keep getting better and better.
I almost cried, this is such a beautiful song, I love it so much
This song is so GOOD!!
"God Helps Those, Who Helps Themselves" Don't you people know that it means, He will help you IF you'll help yourself. You have to make the damn effort and He'll give you the strength to keep going. Damn I'm not even christian and i know what that means. Quit being stupid.
I could not have said it any better! You might not be christian but God bless you bro! Religion is narrowing the perspective on this but God is like come on do something lol
You don't have to be christian to know that
You're right. Funny who god touches sometimes. You are a blessing but maybe you don't know it yet, how precious you are to him.
It's not too late, the door is wide open for you and he is waiting with loving arms. Maybe that is what you need, or maybe you don't know it yet.
Love your thoughts on the lyrics! To be clear though... no where in the Bible does it state that God only helps those that help themselves...
"God helps those who help themselves" is probably the most often quoted phrase that is not found in the Bible. This saying is usually attributed to Ben Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard's Almanac in 1757. In actuality, it originated from Algernon Sydney in 1698 in an article titled Discourses Concerning Government. Whatever the original source of this saying, the Bible teaches the opposite. God helps the helpless! Isaiah 25:4 declares, "For You have been a defense for the helpless, a defense for the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat..." Romans 5:6 tells us, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly."
In terms of salvation, we are all utterly helpless. We are all infected by sin (Romans 3:23), and condemned as a result of that sin (Romans 6:23). Nothing we can do on our own can remedy this situation (Isaiah 64:6). Thankfully, God is the helper of the helpless. While we were still sinners, Jesus died for us (Romans 5:8). Jesus paid the penalty that we were incapable of paying (2 Corinthians 5:21). God provided the "help" that we need precisely because we could not help ourselves.
Apart from salvation, there is perhaps a way that the concept "God helps those who help themselves" is correct. As an example, if you asked me to help you move a piece of furniture, but then just watched me as I moved the furniture for you, I was not actually helping you. I would be doing the work for you. Many Christians fall into the trap of inactivity. Many Christians ask God for help, but then expect God to do everything Himself. They excuse this by pointing to the fact that God will provide according to His will and in His timing. However, this is not a reason for inactivity. As a specific example, if you are in need of a job, ask the Lord to help you find a job - but then be active in actually looking for a job. While it is in His power to do so, it is highly unlikely that God will cause employers to come looking for you!

solisium I'm not religious, and you should just respect that and let people stay that way.
Can Never spend his wealth .... His riches are not on earth but in heaven
"Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." ~Matthew 6:20
When I was a kid, my grandfather was a preacher, he'd talk about life, yeah he was something like a teacher!--favorite line in the song
For everyone saying that the lyric "God only helps those who learn to help themselves" is confusing or wrong, let me explain. When you become a Christian, you're choosing to help yourself. God uses things like poverty, hunger, and just plain old struggle so that people go looking for the hope that is Jesus Christ. When you decide to confide in God, helping yourself, God will give you the strength and resources you need to get through one battle after the next. I hope this helps you understand a little more what this song is talking about.
?
I saw them yesterday and i can't stop crying they're so ... perfect.
:) i love this song!!!
"He was a million miles from a million dollars, but you can never spend his wealth"
God that gave me goosebumps...
It's an old saying meaning that those who sit around and wait for God to part the skies and drop a miracle into their lap will never get anywhere.
"A million miles from a million dollars, but you can never spend his wealth."... Powerful
People keep stressing God only helps those who "CAN'T" help themselves but he also learns to help those who helps themselves because he sees you making that effort
I love the choir vocal Harmony on the second chorus
In this song the singer(Ryan Tedder) is explaining the wisdom he learned from his Grandfather on how to life his life. The phrase "a million miles from a million dollars but you can never spend his wealth" is referring to the fact that even though his Grandfather did not have much in terms of money and possessions he had a wealth that was priceless - wisdom. This wisdom has obviously guided Ryan into his success enough that wanted to honor both his Grandfather and God in this song.
This song never fails to leave me speechless. It truly is a flawless song.
Show of hands(thumbs?): Who else really does have a preacher for a grandfather? This song reminds me of mine so much.
I had too :)
I dont know why but this make me cry. Its such a beautiful song
My absolute favourite it opens up the flood gates of memories very dear remembering my God fearing grandfather sitting at the table reading to us kids from his bible. Miss you granddad Joubert.
So cool!
I listened to this song as my friend Sergio and I went hiking at night 😌❤️👌🏼
I think it means that, God can only help you, if you are willing to help yourself. If you are okay with how you are, God can't help you, and neither can anyone else. God is willing to help you with anything, and is ready right now to help, but unless we want help we won't get it, because God doesn't force his love on us!
This song reminds me of my Grandfather.. He ain't a Preacher, but he has this set of rules/morals which are basically unbreakable/indestructible.
This is by far my new fave song! I LOVE onerepublic as it is. This makes me love them even more!
The cool thing about this song is that everyone is a preacher in some way or another.
This reminds me of my grandfather who died in 2009. Because when I was a kid, he was a preacher.
Very sorry for your loss. I hope you're consoled with knowing that he's in a better place.
that sucks....what sucks even more is that he lived his whole life to get into a magical castle in the sky that doesnt exist.
Cory Urton Hey dude, people can believe whatever they want. Don't be a jerk because you don't have the same beliefs that he did.
Cory Urton Hey there is a magical castle in the sky
so what science says there is no such thing as that
I dont care!
You can't see it cause you dont believe it, but once u do your prayers you will see that castle. Once u speak to God and believe u will see.
Anyways Hans, I can relate to you, so sorry for your lost! You grandfather had a heart of gold (even though I don't know him, he sounds like he does have one and I'm pretty sure he does :D) so hes in a better place now. God bless everyone who had losses and been through the tough times!
Isabel Aries
youre right, i crossed the line. my bad
He is more closr to God than you think! May God bless him for his songs.till the love runs out, the frist time I heard that, I said it would be a great gospel tune!! Listen to the words, and you will have Jesus right there with you!!!!

This is criminally underrated
He was a million miles from a million dollars... - i love this verse :D
This is a beautiful song.
I am not religious but this song is beautiful to me. It means a lot to me in more ways than one.
my grandfather died today. now I am listening to this
God helps those who can't help themselves.
The only correction I would make. Great song.
loves this song
I love this song because my grandfather was a preacher also. He died a couple of years ago and about a month after he died my dad was going through his old books and he found a love poem my Grandad had written for my Grandma about 20 years ago and had never given to her, my Dad gave my Grandma the poem and she treasures it to this day.
Character and love of fellow mankind. Worth more than all the gold in the world!
This song actually reminds me a lot of my grandfather. He was a good man.
OneRepublic is definitely an awesome band, they constantly keep surprising me, songs like this and bands as great as this are really rare nowadays, keep up the the great work guys, AWESOME :)
I think this song is a story about a young boy who died when he was very young, he later became an angel and knew the way of "god", he helped others, kind of like a guardian angel. I think the grandfather is a figure of speech, as in maybe someone who taught him a lot not only when he was alive but also when he died. Don't just shake your head at my comment, listen to the song over again and think about what I wrote when you do, tell me how you feel.
i like your interpretation! :D
Lol thanks
This song is about Ryan Tedders Grandfather, but what you said was truely beautiful.
Thank you, and I found out that it was about his grandfather, an hour after i posted that lol.
mamragbe diaby
Hahaha don't worry about it :P :)
God is our,helper.. he is,the, maker,of,us. He helps us all, the, time. not about self. about the grace of,his, son Jesus Christ amen
This is one of my favorite songs by One Republic. I love the way you made the lyrics look, too!!
how can someone dislike this song, seriously
I love this song, it reminds me of my Grandfather who was a Methodist Preacher and he was the best man in my life, even though I failed to listen to him time and time again:) RIP

When a song captures and touches the places you forgot existed, ignites a depth not explored ..... It's a one time experience
Creation is the beginning of greatness. I am in awe
this song means so much to my mom. for that, i respect this song greatly. :)
I have to say. This is my favorite song off Native.
good song strikes to the heart!...i do missed my grandfather, who is always been a good to us his grandchildren..
He's not saying you have to be religious in order to love the song. He's saying that the song would be appreciated more by people who are religious because of the lyrics.
i think of supernatural every time i hear this song.- see son you got an angel to chase the devil at night.
Truth.
ultimate Destiel song !!
DESTIEL YES
You're right! OneRepublic have really outdone themselves this time :)
onerepublic made an entire album that sounds awesome, that's nearly impossible.
Probably the most underrated song of 2k13
The best song ever and OneRepublic is the best band on the Earth !!
I must repeate it everyday
I love this song it helps bring god closer together for us x
A perfect end to a perfect CD.
My best friend that moved showed me this song every time I listen to this song it makes me cry!!!!!!!! I miss you Carly!
En este momento no tengo palabras. Gracias a canciones como esta mi vida es más fácil.

Heidi Jensen its so beautiful
My grandma is Christian and this song reminds me so much of her, besides the preacher part. She is just so kind and sweet and funny. She saw my pop socket on my phone once and asked what it was for. When I told her she said: "hm.. That's cool. Maybe I could get one for my phone too." (her phone has a wallet thing on it with a magnetic case to the wallet xD)) I love her so much
When i first heard this song, I was surprised that it was it was OneRepublic.
But it is an amazing song non the less.
2:07 and 2:14. Goosebumps. O my gosh. I love this song.
I love this song because my grandfather is a preacher and he's taught me and my siblings a lot over the years. He's one of the greatest men I know. He's also one of the most even tempered men I know. I can't wait to go home and see him.
Im the only one here in 2020..i love every onerepublic song.. but it seems everybody forgot bout their songs.. nobody loves old artists anymore, that makes me sad😔
Thank you One Republic ❤
I recently lost my grandfather, who was a deacon... I had forgotten how much this song made me think of him. From the religious title to the way he used to give advice. So thank you to what ever entity led me this way, because I needed it
this song i showd it to my dad and hes going through cancer and this somg reads him of perfectly i love everyone you guys are all beutiful stay strong
Love this song
Muy especial gracias
This is one of my favorite songs and it's funny cause both of my grandfather's died before I got to know them, but my grandmother who's still alive was a preacher. So when I hear this I think of her.
Onerepublic has so much talent
my grandpa passed way two years ago and he was a preacher this song just reminds me of him.. and makes me miss him
ONE REPUBLIC IS THE BEST !!!!
one of the best songs in the album
though i never sold drugs.... this song reminds me of my grandfather, even before he passed away. That man taught me about loving myself and how generosity is the key to an open heart. The man was braver than I ever could be, the strongest person I'll ever know in this life time. It was crazy, he went through so much growing up and making mistakes... he taught me the right way of being a human and gave me the wisest advice that would open my eyes to another's view.
I'll forever miss my Grandpa, the man that was more of a father to me than my own dad and step dad. I wish you were here just a little longer for me to truly make you proud.
I was hoping for you to walk me down the isle next spring....
Whoever dislikes this is like the devil. THIS IS AMAZING MUSIC AND WHY I'M ONEREPUBLIC'S BIGGEST FAN!
my grandfather passed away last year, i never got to say goodbye to him or go to his funeral, this song reminds me of him.
sorry for your loss. may he rest in peace. God speed
Songs like this gives me hope that artists can still write good songs and produce good music.
I never knew my grandparents but this song is my go to song when I need grounding. For me it is about life when you get to an age of knowing what your life is really about.
This is literally my favotite song of all time.
This song is truly inspiring
i always thought that instead of "but you could never spend his wealth" it was "but you could never spin as well" o_o like he had some kinda DJ grandpa
Beautiful song. Would love to see one Republic live
I'm not even religious, and I still freakin love this song.
OMG, I AGREE! It reminded me of "Paradise"!
