As president, JFK made the world respect the United States of America. Everyone liked and trusted him. The Kennedys were the royal family that americans will never have. Regarding JFK's personal character, no one is perfect, but his flaws did not stop him from being one of the best presidents ever.

    • @reymondjames1726
      @reymondjames1726 5 лет назад +17

I separate JFK's private life from his professional life simply because it did not impact his presidency. For example, Bill Clinton's personal behavior while POTUS impacted the country. He also derived personal gain from being POTUS, while JFK actually gave up his favorite Cuban cigars once the embargo took effect. Plus, look at all the devils working against President JFK? He was excluding his family alone. People should expect leaders to be honest and work to improve the country and make opportunity available for those who seek it. JFK never claimed to be perfect, but he looked it and that is what people saw. He served America well, including those citizens from other nations. Can you say the same for LBJ? LBJ served LBJ and the interests of others who put him in office.

As one who has had polio related problems with left leg and back, I can easily discern JFK's back problems when he walks in a few of these clips. So sad it is that he was all off 46 when this footage was taken and my problems didn't really hit me for a second time until I hit 55. He really did struggle so it seems and considering he was the president, I really have to admire his overall strength. How many of us could have performed likewise? Other than FDR, I can think of nobody. These two were very special men.

+robert glenn What do you mean by he really didn't struggle so it seems? May I also ask do you know specifically what his back problems were? I know I find how tall he really was compared to how he sometimes appeared surprises me. I would have expected he'd be shorter. If he did indeed wear the type of back brace that's been spoken of and shown, they'll keep your body in a position to keep going, even with nerves pinching and the legs on the verge of dropping out from under you, as the support they give that allows the body a break from having to hold itself up against the bones/muscles/etc working to pull it in a direction that's both painful for it being done and painful because of all the years spent unaware there was optional help. Not too long ago I used to get up to 12 shots of local aesthesia and cortisone injected into my back once a week. And even with that the spasms and many other symptoms including those not just pain were bloody horrendous. I feel for JFK.

+Perpetual Notion Good question. However, there's more than a few clips of JFK in which I detect the guy was dragging...very difficult to discern unless you know what to look for. Smiles that at times tended toward a grimace, sudden slowing of his usual step and when tired, as I've often experienced, he'd walk measured steps and I can just sense what is going on inside.

I've read so many books on JFK and the Kennedys that I've lost count and I've read time and again that JFK was in constant pain all his adult life.
As President he had some quack doctor, who was admitted to The White House and also at times traveled with him, injected him twice a week with what turned out to be vitamins and amphetamines. Some of his close aides like Kenny O'Donnel tried to get him to get rid of that doctor (his name escapes me now) telling him that no one really knew what was in those injections but Kennedy said, and this is a close but not exact quote; "I don't care of it's horse piss, it helps me get through the day."
He was raised in a family where to show any kind of weakness was simply not allowed. My brothers father in-law Ralph worked on the production staff at ABC in New York City for his whole life which included the 1950s and 60s.
He used to tell a story, which he once told me, that he was on the set during one of the famous Kennedy-Nixon Presidential debates. He was standing right next to the 3 or 4 steps that went up onto the platform where both candidates sat during the debate. He said that as Kennedy mounted the steps he grimaced in abject pain. Without thinking, Ralph grabbed Kennedys arm to assist him up the steps. The second he touched Kennedys arm, Kennedy wheeled around to face him and gritting his teeth, now in anger instead of pain, said between his clenched teeth, "Don't you touch me!" and shoved Ralph so hard that he almost fell over. Ralph was in his 30s at the time and was a very healthy 6' 2" tall.
He said that at the time he mistook Kennedys response for pure arrogance but many years later after reading a bit about JFK he realized that arrogance was the least of it. Kennedy did not want to appear weak. Of course he could afford to let down his guard a bit in front of the ABC production staff but when the red "On Air" light came on Kennedy looked totally relaxed and at ease.
There are stories of JFK being wheeled away from public appearances in wheelchairs and even on hospital gurneys when there were no news cameras present.
As RUclips "poster" robert glenn commented, if you know what you're looking for, you can see signs of pain and almost distress behind Kennedys public facade in many film clips. Contrasted against his almost pathological sexual behavior, the way he carried himself in public belies a discipline and determination that is simply astounding.
Last, I just recently saw an old filmed interview (now on video, of course) with one of the Parkland Hospital doctors who was in the Emergency room when Kennedy was wheeled in after after being fatally shot in Dallas. He described Kennedys back brace as starting under his arm pits and wrapped around his whole torso, front and back, going down to his crotch and being strapped around and through his legs and crotch and being so tight that he wondered how Kennedy could take a full, deep breath. He said that it took a good amount of time to unstrap the whole thing and extricate him to work on him.
He said that even without the brace they couldn't possibly have saved him with the head shot having done such massive damage BUT he believes that it is possible that, in another respect, Kennedy might have survived THAT assassination attempt because, if he hadn't been wearing such a constrictive brace when the first shot hit, (which struck him in the throat from the front) he might have immediately fallen over and would not have been a target for the fatal head shot.

JFK took Jackie here so she could heal from the loss of their newborn, Patrick. There is a really poignant photo of Jack helping Jackie down some stairs after she was discharged from the hospital. They rarely, if ever, showed tenderness to one another in public. He doesn't let go of her hand. Almost as if he wanted to block anyone that would cause her more pain. They decided to work on their marriage, both ensuring the other that the love was there, and would grow as time went on. They lost Patrick in August of 63. Then, in November, Jackie lost Jack as well.

Seems very middle class to me and working class. Everyone I met there just seemed down to earth and visiting the church where he attended and the armouries where he gave his acceptance speech shows you how small town this place really is. Matt Smith I don't think RFK has been in any way forgotten or overlooked. After all, being the closest surviving sibling to JFK ( after Joe Jnr.s untimely tragic death) they were also friends and allies, who developed an almost symbiotic relationship. RFK became the gatekeeper of JFKs reputation and privacy. Later on, he used JFKs memory and legacy as an inspiration for his own bid for the Presidency, which was tragically cut short. At least, neither of them, ever compromised their personal integrity, and that is, as good as it gets.

Emory Roberts rode shotgun in the back up car head of the Secret Service Detail that day at Dealey Plaza. When the President got shot, Emory Roberts was in charge thereafter. Nobody ever talks about that. He took charge of everything, and immediately got Johnson onto Air Force One to leave Dallas and be sworn in going to Washington or if necessary a safe place to protect him. Emory was my neighbor in Wheaton, Md. on Holdridge Rd.
Most of this is in Dealey Plaza -
In the early morning it was scheduled to rain in Dallas and the Secret Service was setting up to install the canopy on the car. The forecast changed and the President wanted to be seen by the crowds, and besides the President did not want ir put on. So it was not put on.
So as to not make JFK negligent in his death, it was bandied about that there were no foot stands on the rear of the car for Secret Service to ride on. Clearly you can see two foot stands on the rear bumper of the car with handrails to hang on. Clint Hills is stepping on one to get onto the back of the car to be with Jackie. There is just bogus story after bogus story surrounding JFK's assasination.

He did what he did while he was alive. He and Jackie had many good times with their children. But the media was much more professional around the Presidency. They let them alone and respected their private time. If he had become President after Watergate he would have been handled very differently then he was around his womanizing... He hurt his wife doing this, but his needs were more than any woman would be able to bear. Just look at the current list of men across this nation who have become named doing the same thing for decades.

I did once hear an insider say that he wouldn’t have had time for all these women who say they were with him. But, I think he and Jackie were in love. There is a handwritten letter of Jackie’s declaring how much she loved him and that was several years into their marriage. It is disappointing to know of the duplicitous life the Kennedy men lived.
