- On Feb. 14, 1962, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy gave the first broadcast tour of the White House, offering the public a glimpse of the historic home that had just undergone a $2 million restoration project. In the CBS News Special with CBS News reporter Charles Collingwood, Kennedy narrated a brief history of the White House, taking audiences from the home’s original construction that started in 1792 through its various iterations, rebuilds and former inhabitants. Most estimates show that the hour-long broadcast was viewed by 80 million people. Kennedy also won an Emmy for her performance in the special.

Jacqueline was so poised and soft spoken. Yet she was highly opinionated and very intelligent. Often working directly with John and sitting in on important meetings. Now that I've listened to her tapes, I have an even deeper respect. She was an amazing woman.
Agree
Now THIS is a lady who personifies class. By far the classiest First Lady.
She was a victem of men, HUmiliated and degrated in front of the entire World. Her husband sleeping with women and one of the most famous right in the very building she slept. Just like now when women are still treated like they dont exist(trans issue) Jackie was shamefully mistreated and suffered greatly. Its sad when people ignore her real life and act like she had such a wonderful life. She didnt.
@@lennyvelez5929 After the fact, we now know how incredible she actually was. It was a different time. Not going to judge the past, but the role of the first lady was to stay behind the shadows and not participate. She was trained to act "lady-like" and poised, in the way she walked and talked. Now reading her diaries and monologues, many of us undestimated her brilliance. There is no doubt in my mind she wishes her husband was not assassinated.
Yes I see what's your point
Her voice is ASMR heaven.
It should be an ASMR standard.
Yesssss
I think that’s who Michael Jackson wanted to be😩😂
jackie o mukbang asmr 😭😭😭
As a Colombian, I admire the way how she pronounced Simón Bolívar (our liberator) and Colombia, she try to sound spanish, it says a lot of her, she shows respect to our culture and our language, defenilty a First Lady of a Nation, I like the way how she speak soft and concise. She is one of my role modes along with Diana Spencer.
The level of sophistication and perfection makes her so unrelatable, yet I am obsessed with her 😂
Last year was the 60th anniversary of this White House tour with Jacqueline Kennedy. I really wish CBS had rebroadcast it on TV so everyone could see it in its entirety (February 14, 1962), and even this video is not all of it. Some lovely history never hurt anyone.
They still could and stream it.
This is not even the entire tour. It's deeply edited. I saw the whole tour video a few years ago and it's a little over 56 minutes.
@@SydneyChandlerdamn. Also in case you haven't watched it, there's a movie named "jackie". Its pretty good.
She won an honorary Emmy for this and her restoration project helped establish the White House as a symbol of American history and transformed it into a museum. Jackie Kennedy was a very intelligent and gracious first lady.
The book Jacqueline Kennedy and the Architecture of First Lady Diplomacy (America and Global Affairs) explores her significant role as a cultural ambassador and her impact on U.S. foreign relations.
Such a shame this beautiful tour was done in black and white. When she mentions the colors involved--we can't see it that way. Otherwise this is a magnificent production!
She was more elegant than any royal lady even today.
Wasn't Queen Elizabeth jealous of her?
@francisheperi4180 According to "The Crown". I rather think she didn't appreciate her husband fawning all over Mrs. Kennedy.
She wasn’t jealous just more taken aback and impressed
My heart still breaks for Jackie, woman experienced so much tragedy in her lifetime, too much. As so many individuals have, in different ways. Beautiful lady.
More like *ridiculously* beautiful lady
Inside and out
I am glad she didn't live to see the death of her beautiful son.
But she also lived so beautiful life surrounded by much respect and love, didn’t she? Not every life looks perfect, but we can still say it’s beautiful and happy. She did lived her life 10000%.
Jackie Kennedy definitely lived a good and very influential life, but I don’t think we can call it beautiful. JFK reportedly only married her for politics and didn’t truly love her. He had numerous extramarital affairs, allegedly told one of his mistresses that he was planning to leave his wife for her, witnessed a portion of his head being blown off in front of her, held pieces of his brain together, and lost their infant son a couple of months before. Her second marriage was mainly for financial security.
WOW I am a Colombian and I was shocked to hear Colombia left an important impression on her! Such a nice gesture from her to acknowledge positive things from her trips abroad and such a reminder for people like me to keep honoring our history. After all, America, the continent, has a united heart that keeps unbroken despite people's tendency to ignore it
She has a beautiful sympathetic voice and an equally beautiful presence, rest in peace
Jacqueline Kennedy is the epitome of radiance- her shining eyes, sparkling smile and pearl necklaces, her words all are so bright
Very soft spoken and gentle lady🙏
Nearly 80 million people tuned in and it was a smashing success.
It aired on all three networks, there was no reason for it not to be a success.
Austin Powers voice:
"Smashing, baby"

No one was forced to watch.🙄
It was televised on St. Valentines evening.
@@viktorgadany7595
That makes her success all the more impressive.
Who wants to watch a documentary on Valentine’s Day?😂
Plus. It has always gotten rave reviews. People were very impressed. (My, how the internet has brought out all the haters now.😞)
She was such a great First Lady in every way, she was smart, poised, stylish, incredibly strong and beautiful. I feel like she is the First Lady by which all modern First Ladies are judged, and always will be
As she should be.
She was a very impressive woman …
Period This viedo footage is why Jackie is the one of the most influential first ladies she was the first to give a tour of the white house , the first to help end segeration , and the first widow to get married after her husband deah ain't no first lady like Jacqueline Kennedy hunny

EXACTLY
Where's the rest of the program? They cut it off before the end. How can we watch the rest?
Jacqueline Kennedy respected the white house, the history, and the arts. It's a shame her rose garden is gone.
She restored a neglected White House to a showplace. Later, she played a huge role in saving Grand Central Station.
@@cremebrulee4759 she played a key role in establishing the John F Kennedy Center for Performing Arts as well and was a cultural ambassador.
Lord she was so beautiful and graceful.
The jackie movie brought me here. Good movie.👍🏻
What impresses me is how much she knows about the history of the White House, and all the items featured in the tour.
The information was given to her by White House historians.
Mrs. Kennedy wasn't merely reciting what historians told her. Remember, she organized and steered the committee that decorated the White House, so she was personally knowledge of every piece of furniture, artwork, and decor.
@@gabriellamar2683 ...she had personal...

Thank you for posting this! I have a very old copy I made on VHS when you broadcast this years ago and now I cannot watch it!
Fascinating tour.
Her voice is so soothing and elegant ❤
Seems women of the era, had this.
@@mikem3789 I do not remember that. She was trained of course, much like actresses.
Wonderful voice
Why I feel that’s she’s imitating her voice trying to talk like Marilyn monroe ??????!!!!!!😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
This is so wonderful. She was simply adorable and excited. If only we could reinvigorate that level of excitement.
This was great because it showed all of her upbringing and class. She loved art and history. Just a great First Lady.
I love Jacqueline Kennedy’s breathy voice.
She is super fn cool, graceful and down to earth
can literally hear the room she recorded this in
Extraordinary...! 🇺🇲❤️🇺🇲
I can still remember when JFK was assassinated November 22 , 1963. I was only 6 years old and did not fully understand what had happened. I do remember that it was a time of sorrow with people crying and remember the non stop coverage on TV. Even though I was only 6 I remember the funeral procession and little JFK Jr Saluting his dad , he was only three years old and he turned 3 the day of his father funeral. It is something that everybody that was alive at that time will remember. Just like those of us that were alive when the world trade centers were attacked September 11, 2001.. I remember every detail about how I found out about it , where I was and what I was doing. I remember the shock and being stunned and was trying to comprehend the horror. Jackie Kennedy was a very gracious lady.
I have those same memories. The assassination of JFK stripped us of much of our innocence. September 11 stripped us of much of our sense of security.
The strom drain is where the shooter was
I never thought about it like that but now that you mentioned it, the way 9/11 scarred all of us around the world, I imagine the same thing was experienced by everyone in the USA who followed the news... A truly tragic moment.
@@caprious454 the WH storm drain? jk
I was only six when Jacqueline Kennedy gave this tour of the newly decorated White House, but l remember watching it with my family.
How times have changed,
We don't know what we had until we lost it - we had President John F Kennedy and his beautiful wife and first lady. The epitome of the future, of what the sixties could hold for us. And then came November 22nd 1963, we lost it all.
Simpler times. So elegant
Fascinating.
If my memory serves me correct, all three networks carried this special, with CBS and NBC simulcasting it and ABC showing it a few days later, with the Kennedys insisting that one of the three networks carry it on a delayed basis a few days later so those who missed the first showing could catch a repeat a few nights later.
Very considerate of them! In those days, if you missed something on tv, you missed it forever.
She was so knowledgeable about the White House!! Nice video!
Happy 61st anniversary to Jackie Kennedy’s White House Tour
8:09 she has the same voice as her cousin Edie Beale from the documentary Grey Gardens! Love that mid Atlantic accent!
Enjoyed! Thank you
This was the first TV program that I remember. I was 4 years old. My mother sat there fascinated. I kept waiting to see JFK. I remember being disappointed when he didn't
"show up." ;) I can't believe I actually remember that.
Actually he did show up at the end for a short 5 minute interview, saying how proud he was of Jackie for this project. Looking for the vid now.
What strikes me is that the tone and cadence of her voice are so much like her first cousin, little Edith Beale. It's such a haunting sound and a reminder that sometimes people from the very same family that start out with the same exact history can end up in such completely opposite. When she was younger, Edith Bealle was considered one of the most beautiful and eligible debutants of her day. Somehow, listening and watching Jacqueline Kennedy and this video make her story even more haunting and pathetic.
Of course, in their own ways, they both suffered so very much, just in different ways. But I think there can be no doubt that at some point, Edith had a mental breakdown. It's really weird because they both seem so very fragile to me in their own ways. But somehow, Jackie found a way to persevere, but edith did not.
You could easily make this the proper 4:3 aspect ratio by adding "4:3" to the tags. It will then be changed to the proper aspect ratio.
I love the portrait of Angelica Van Buren in the Red Room.
“This wallpaper was printed in France about 1834” (goes on the talk about the scenes) “when was it printed?” (She smiles) “uhm, in the beginning of the 19th century….”
Shows how much he was listening…
She was a very beautiful and elegent woman and liked by everyone. JACKIE and JOHN F. KENNEDY WE'RE A very beautiful Couple. I can still remember when he was assesinated it was the saddest day of all time. A Big lose for the country 🇺🇸. May their souls Rest In Peace. 🙏🙏😔😪😒
They were a practical couple. JFK cheated on her all the time and she only married him for practical reasons
@@theredhotchilipepperssexof4269 Are you ok?
I love this. Was only born in 1977 but John F Kennedy and his wife just had special memory I was hooked on. ❤️❤️🇳🇦
I watched Jeopardy last night and one of the categories was First Ladies. "This first lady gave a tour of the white house and can be seen in full on RUclips" "Who is Jackie Kennedy?" Trippy because I just watched it on cable tv. And here is RUclips recommending it to me a day later, creepy...
That's that they b listenin shi+

@@giogonzo1111 I think so too b/c stuff like that happens to me too.
I just watched Grey Gardens again and forgot how closely Mrs. Kennedy and her cousin, Edie Beale, sounded.
Ok… this was very interesting. She really liked art and history. ❤❤❤❤❤
Her Bachelor's degree from Georgetown was in Art History.
Where's the whole program? The entire tour was about an hour or so. A huge part of it is missing.
AMAZING LADY !
RIP LEGEND !!!
Grew up on the First Family record album (Vaughan Meader) that poked fun at this tour. Never saw the footage it was based on. Thank you.
This is x fabulous and fascinating⭐️✨⭐️
Jacklyn Kennedy had such Class.
Jacqueline was elegant, graceful and amicable for being an icon of the ladies. Moreover she created the case for women In perusing independence and happiness. She presented incomparable courage and strength after the assassination ❤ she was long missing as a legendary figure ❤
Interesting how Thomas Jefferson’s entry looks exactly like Monticello!! Lol. 🇺🇸♥️
I could watch her all day.
I Love America
I used to love America. I don't love this America. It's awful.

Excellent.
her voice was beatiful
The most elegant first lady ever 👏👏👏👏👏
That voice. Easthampton; Park Avenue; Newport.
So impressive to see the upholstery room, what a great idea to be sure of the quality and keep an eye on the treasures. I wonder what that room is used for today?
It would sure be refreshing to have a First Lady someday who takes up an interest in our history as Jackie did.
Happy 94th birthday Jackie Kennedy
What a revelation to learn that the entire interior of the White House was gutted to bring structural integrity to the structure during Truman's presidency. Seeing that steel skeleton inside the outer walls is a great lesson in American history. The preface narrated by Jackie Kennedy was a wonderful touch that can still inspire our deeper appreciation for this great symbol of our national government.
I wish i could watch this in its entirety
That style, man! That’s why both me & my daughter Isabella are really proud to have our birthdays celebrated in July- the same month with Mrs Kennedy! (BTW my daughter Isabella was born on July 4th 2010 and I was born on July 19th 1979)
Please show the whole program!
Watched this live on television. Should have been on film and in color. CBS could have afforded it.
I agree completely. Had CBS switched to color when JFK was still President like they should have, we'd be able to see color news coverage of his assassination and funeral.
Very few people had colors TVs at that point
Really Love This ❤
Her voice though 😭😭😭
She had such grace.
What is her accent? People don’t talk like this anymore unfortunately. I love listening to her talk.
now, that's class!
16:59 she tells the journalist, your being extra in a most elegant way 😊
Remember it well 🕊🇺🇲💕
Can we fix the aspect ratio? Should be 4:3.
I read that she smoked continuously off camera between takes the day of the taping and that the director kept asking her to speak up but she made it clear she was speaking as loudly as she could
Did she die from lung cancer in 94' 9:50 ?
@James Fracasse No as I understand it Non Hodgkins Lymphoma
@@williamkelly8026 thanks for the clarification on the subject and sadly just five years later John Jr died in a plane crash along with his wife and sister in law.

Jacqueline Kennedy was young only 64 years old when she died
They were all too young… I just found out George Magazine is back they even got a website
Jimmy Carter was older than Jackie Kennedy so she would be 94 years old.
does anyone know where I could find the full video? I remember seeing a longer version some time ago, but it seems to have been removed from youtube ):
Where's the rest??
Wow. Didn't know they had 16:9 screen ratio cameras back in '62!
Seriously...for something this historical, would it have been too hard to NOT post it stretched wide from 1:33?
Too bad the background music is so loud and annoying!!!
It’s loud ridiculous and completely unnecessary 🙄
Sophisticated history of White House,
She was just gorgeous
Good..
This presidency was before my time, but I can tell this is what it should be like.
Wish I saw this in color
When I saw it at the time it was filmed, we had black and white TV. I suppose they could spend time trying to colorize it but I think they wanted to be true to history and show the program as it aired.
@@charleneandrle-olson3099 but the fashion of Mrs. K is fascinating
CBS did not have color broadcasts until 1965.
The album “The First Family” had a parody of this. After a TV camera crashed through some expensive doors, Jackie said, “And until just a few seconds ago, they stood over 15 feet high!”
Jackie had such a refined but unpretentious accent
It’s Mrs. John F. Kennedy!
Thank you Mrs, John F, Kennedy.
I feel like this is an episode of 73 Questions by Vogue, the way she’s walking around and the way the camera follows her

I love when the First Ladies keep up the people’s house… She reminds me of Melania beautiful Ladies!❤
Jackie wrote the rules of how to be a First Lady.
I remember Lee Radizwill saying "Jackie looks like someone put a horse inside a gerbil" but I think she meant it in a good way
*She speaks with the Transatlantic Accent which was learned in exclusive East Coast boarding schools.*
Natalie Portman did such an amazing job portraying this fine lady.
