Yes, there's so many country "story" songs! Here you go for more possibilities: Bobby Gentry- "Ode to Billy Joe", Alison Krause with Union Station- "Wild Bill Jones", Gillian Welch-"Annabelle", and here's one song with 4 stories held together with a moral: John Hammond, "Get Behind the Mule".

There’s a version of Jolene that a girl did on the Voice UK about 6-7 years ago that was amazing. It was a reggae-rap version and it is out there on YT. Definitely worth checking out, it was a great homage to the amazing Dolly Parton.

Dolly was famous for her bust size. But her talent was what kept her fame and still does. Her humanitarian efforts are too numerous to count. But she doesn't advertise them. Too many songs to listen only one great one. But have you ever heard of Ricky Skaggs? Bluegrass. I suggest Blue Moon of Kentucky. It's easy to find. Love your vibe❤

She is a charitable soul. She also just got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She said that wasn't right, she hasn't ever done rock. And so she is putting together a rock album now with several invited rock guests on an upcoming album. Below is the clip I found about it:
Parton made headlines in March after saying she was "extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated," but didn’t feel that she had "earned that right" to be recognized as a rock artist over other performers. As a result, she wanted to "respectfully bow out." But by then, ballots had already been sent out to voters.
In response, the Rock Hall announced that they weren’t backing down, explaining that the organization was "not defined by any one genre." They pointed out that it had deep roots in country music, as well as rhythm and blues.

Dolly loved the name and told her she would write a song with her name. The story about the bank teller is true, but exaggerated, but the name Jolene came from a little girl she met after a concert. She told the little girl she loved her name and she was going to write a song with it... repeated the name in her head all the way back to the bu and had the chorus, "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene," worked out by the time she got to a pencil.

I’m a 68 yo woman & I was raised on Gospel & Country music yet I do like different genres of music. Country & Blue Grass music is all about telling a story whether it’s about cheating, loving, happiness, pain or drinking too much. I try to only listen to good, moral songs but the pain of loosing the one you love or could loose like Jolene gives one a sad feeling. Dolly Pardon is one of the most talented singers & song writer. I watched her when she first started with Porter Wagoner way back in the 60’s & 70’s! I always say… Broaden your horizons & you indeed have fallen into that category by hearing Dolly’s great song Jolene. Broaden it more by listen to more Country songs! They tell of real life & sometimes some history! I’m glad you had a positive reaction to Dolly & Jolene now listen to some more Dolly songs!

When visiting Florida 15 yrs ago, we went to a dolly show that included your supper. As the price was much the same as any restaurant, we decided to give it a go for the experience even though we were neither dolly nor country fans. OH WOW !!!! It was Dolly Parton herself that sang like an angel, chatted with the audience and had us in fits of laughter, in between crying my heart out at the most amazing lyrics. This pint sized lady, who came from dirt poor beginnings in the mountains, then came down to chat with anyone who wanted to, as we were leaving. I tried to tell her that I’d been so moved by her story and her honesty through her songs, and she said we were all the same trying to do our best to get through life. She also laughed and referred to her songs as just her little tunes. So humble. I’ve never forgotten that night, the night I met a true star who has been a wee fighter and so proud of her family and community. Fame has not ruined her, to her it’s a way that she has been able to give that she would otherwise been unable to do. And yes i continue to feel emotional when I hear her sing. ❤

Most of my list is older stuff, but they are some classics. Reba McIntire "Fancy," "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia," Conway Twitty "That's My Job," "Hello Darlin," "Its Only Make Believe," "Lay You Down," Randy Travis "For Ever And Ever (Amen)," Johnny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues," "A Boy Named Sue," "Ring of Fire," "God's Gonna Cut You Down," (you already did Hurt), George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today," Dolly Parton "9 to 5," "I Will Always Love You," "Islands In The Stream," "Rockin Years"
Then, a few newer ones, Whiskey Myers "Broken Window Serenade," Sturgill Simpson "Long White Line," Colter Wall "Kate McCannon," "The Devil Wears a Suit And Tie"...
I leave you alone now, lol. Any of these will rock your world dude. There are many other greats, I didn't even get into Hank Williams or some other stuff like that. But if you want to see what country is about, this will be a GREAT start.

Dolly was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She tried to decline the nominations mainly because she considers herself a country music artist. So in order to correct that, she is now recording her first rock album & teaming up with famous female rock & pop artists. She just finished recording a duet with Stevie Nicks & is working with Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, & others to appear on her album. She wrote "Jolene & I will always love you" at the same time (well, on the same day). She has composed over 5k songs for herself & other musicians. She also recently worked with Barry Gibb on his last album, remakes of songs by The Bee Gees. I was lucky to grow up with Dolly's music because my dad (now 87) has been a life long fan ever since her big break when she was on the Porter Wagoner show (1967).. She wrote "I will always love you" for her recording partner, Porter, when she left his show to be a solo artist. My favorite songs are - Coat of many colors, Me and Little Andy, 9 to 5, & Islands in the Stream - that one was a chart topping hit she recorded with Kenny Rogers. Oh, and it was written by The Bee Gees - LOL!

Dolly Parton is a national treasure, adored by millions of her fans around the world. One of America’s greatest singer songwriters, and a notable philanthropist, who has done so much for numerous charities.

Dolly's such a classy lady. Even when she writes a song about a woman she's angry at, she just sounds like she's writing a love letter to her.
Most songs like this are filled with hate and puffed up insecure pride. Instead, she's humble and genuinely begging her to please not do what she's doing. It shows, I think, that her love for him is real and this isn't just about competition or being scorned.

There is a version of the song called "Jolene but it's gay" which you reminded me of with the talk of it sounding like a love letter XD

Dolly is an amazing songwriter and singer but her most important contribution to the world is how she has used her money and influence to better the lives of countless people across the country. She is truly an inspiration

I just think the song is so poignant- the sadness instead of anger in the song knowing Jolene could get him because she’s so beautiful but begging her not too. Really deep

I cannot think of a more universally adored celebrity. I don't know anyone from any walk of life, or of any age who does not love her. She's loved for her voice, her songwriting, her story telling, her great big personality, and her huge contributions to charities. If you have not yet heard her sing 9 to 5, you're in for a treat.

A 3-woman group called Chapel Hart wrote a sequel to this song called "You Can Have Him, Jolene". They performed it on America's Got Talent. They were pretty awesome.

Dolly is a treasure. For all she does for charity, her foundation, music. She's so much fun to watch.
    We need more country reactions.

She’s very generous and donated 1 million to find a vaccine for Covid. Dolly is a treasure. She is kind and I don’t know if she’s ever said an unkind word to anyone. I like her music too but her for who she is. She’s been married 56 years. Only one husband

I almost cried when Polo said he did not know if Dolly Parton fell into country music that is like me not knowing if P. Diddy fell into a rapper category lol
