Interesting fact...the American Chestnut is also called the Wormy Chestnut because of a larva that often left tracks through the wood. A disease resistant version of the American Chestnut has been reintroduced in my home state of WV.
@@broken_queer_but_fighting8589 it was awesome to see. They're being used in reclamation projects on old surface mines. What a cool way to clean these sites up.
I was actually thinking about growing some myself. Not sure if it'd be worth selling the chestnuts or not but having a little orchard of them would be cool 😀
Do you mean the genetically modified chestnut Darling 58? Or do you mean hybrid american/asian chestnut trees? I didn't think we had any natural 100% american chestnut trees that were truly blight resistant yet, and the GMO trees aren't allowed in the wild. I'd be interested to see if there is a natural resistant variety ready now
OMG when the candies were mixed, that color combo was pure Christmas. So pretty! :) I've always thought you should collect all the sugar "dust" that's left over from your drops and sell it as sprinkles or something :D
FYI the USDA is currently examining allowing the planting on private and public land a genetically modified blight resistant version of the american chestnut tree. Its expected to have a big positive impact on wildlife and biodiversity as the chestnut was an important food source for a lot of animals.
My botany professor told me that the American chestnut is still around in the wild but has been reduced to an understory tree (more like a shrub). They can still be found in parts of the Smokey mountains national park if I recall.
Just opened our pack of these, and we are LOVING your candy flavor wizardry at Lofty Pursuits! The chestnut flavor is particularly interesting; I’ve only had them in mince pies, and the candy is just delightful!
Figgy Pudding is essentially the Precursor to Christmas pudding which will sometimes be reffered to as Figgy or Plum pudding despite usually containing neither. Not sure if its a thing stateside but if it's not think of it like a rich fruitcake thats often been soaked in something like Wine or Brandy, typically served hot post Christmas dinner (which is on Christmas day itself for us) and is covered in Brandy that has been lit on fire by a Candle (it doesn't hurt the Pudding as its just the Alchohol vapour burning off), quite a beautiful thing to see but definately not everyones cup of tea.
I know mine has dates and prunes but you're right, I've never considered the fact that there's no figs. I guess I always assumed figgy just meant fruit filled
I would love to see a video showing the entire process from beginning to end, like the actual sugar boiling, how you flavor it, as well as bagging all the little pieces up. Love the videos! :)
I love Lofty Pursuits but I really wish the assortment packs had a list of what the flavors are. I got a Forgotten Flavors assortment in the store this year and even consulting this video only tells me 3/4 of the flavors
Good to see Uri's Candy Makers Burn has healed nicely! I dont think you can truly call yourself a maker until youve had that burn lol Amazing work as usual Uri and Greg. My heritage is Italian and my family is big on eating roasted Chestnuts, may have to indulge in this mix.
looks so good !! sent this to my cousin a week ago who lives nerby too your shop .. hope my family gets to enjoy this snack for christmas well see!! either way much love from texas visiting my cousin in new years will surely stop by.
So the colors/flavors are: Green - Chestnut Dark Purple - (Sugar) Plum White - ??? Red - Fig(gy pudding) ? I feel like they done skipped a bunch of vital information in this one.
Here in The Netherlands it's not common eat chestnuts (or as we calle them, Kastanjes) with Christmas. But I guess if you love nuts, why not? I don't like nuts, but in a candy I would like to try the flavour. Anyway. from The Netherlands, I wish you all a very happy holiday season.
I know it’s not really Autumn anymore, but I would figuratively KILL for some more of your pumpkin image candy…I think it was pumpkin pie flavoured..? I haven’t had it in a few years.
next to my childhood home there's a grouping of 6 American chestnuts. they are big and haven't died off. the Amish come every year and grab cuttings and Chesnuts to try and reintroduce them to the ecosystem.
Yes, we sometimes make it for the store. Making. It's not the problem. Getting it delivered without it. Getting shattered has been the problem. It's a great candy for face to face sales but a hard candy to do mail order. I know other people do it, our good friends at Hercules candies are excellent at it but it has never been something that we really have done a lot of.
Why the negative comment about spam? Speaking about chestnuts having been an important food. Spam was and is important now and is staple in Hawaii . Its a huge part of the islands culture. It was brought to the island back during world war 2 and essentially nourished US troops back then. It stuck there with the locals. Its rich in history.
Just received my forgotten flavors order and I'm super excited to try all of them! Does anybody know which flavor corresponds to each color? Obviously chestnut is green, and I'm guessing gingerbread is brown?
Not all hope is lost for the American chestnut!! While they rarely live to seed in the wild the American Chestnut foundation has been working on breeding a resistant variety which they are only a couple years from being able to plant back in the wild
Have you tried to make Dill Pickle? I bet it would be awesome. Then, BBQ Pickle. Which is a sweet/ sugar cured dill pickle with garlic and pepper sauce - Very good!
My friend. You have canada as a shipping destination, but the cheapest option is $30. Do you pack the candy with rocks? I would love to support you, but i can not justify spending $100 on 30 oz of canady....
We just don't ship enough to get the good rates. We've tried to get them to improve for years but we can do it. We can do. Typically and it depends on where you are in Canada, you can add a lot more candy for not a lot more money, but the base shipping to get it over there is high. I'm terribly sorry about it. We are about as far away from Canada as you can be and still be in the United States.
@@andreweaston1779 because of customs on food products and the how backed up customs gets, that can take up to 3 months to get through. 1 month is more normal. The candy is often damaged by then. Apparently figgy just meant dried fruit at the time of the song.

I'm curious; what is your most popular candy/flavor?
Tangerine sour
Is there a video on the channel of the process from start to finish, not just when you’re pouring in the cooling table?
It's just a pot of boiling sugar. It's boring. It's not a great place to start a video
Maybe show us it just once to satisfy our curiosity? And you could talk about the history of sugar.
We have shown it.
