  • Fox snakes are underestimated in the reptile world in my opinion. They make fantastic pet snakes if you can get your hands on one!

    I currently work at an environmental center and we have an Eastern Fox Snake, who was sadly wild caught, and she is just such an amazing snake! She is so nice and only musked on one person (he squeezed her too hard even though I said no squeezing...), but honestly served him right haha. The kids have named her Slither, and I've been thinking of getting my own fox snake at some point. Great to know theres breeders out there.

    I’m from Illinois and just looked up videos on these handsome snakes, because I just rescued a hatchling from being killed by my outdoor cat. It did have a puncture wound from the cat’s claws, but he was completely fine other than some minor bleeding. Couldn’t have been more than a week or two old though. It was very docile and didn’t mind me holding him at all. I would’ve kept him, because I used to own a corn snake, but I have indoor cats now that would take exception to such a thing. I ended up putting it in a container that I had placed some warmed up rice in with a slightly damp rag on top, so that it could warm up as I transported it. Ended up moving it to a wooded area near a stream, because it near an open field where farm equipment was running. Gave it some water, which it drank, left it some very small cubes of uncooked meat that I’d had and let it go. It ended up burrowing under some leaves. Hope I did the right thing and he ends up surviving. I think he will. One of the most beautiful snakes, if not the most beautiful snake, I’ve seen in Illinois. I love their checkered underside. Not very common sight in the part of Illinois I live either. I’d only ever seen one other one here before when I was a kid, and that was a fully grown adult that I think my dad ended up relocating.

    I adore this channel and you, Emily! Your passion for animals is shown in every video, it's beautiful to watch! Your videos are high quality (as in the videos as well as the content in them), and your voice is very pleasant to listen to and gives me a calming effect. You are also beautiful inside and out, which is hard to come by these days, girl! I struggle with depression, anxiety, and addiction ("father" is an alcoholic, didn't realize I could be as well until I turned 19), but your passion is so strong that it has rubbed off on me, making me want to be a better, happier person for my two dogs and two cats, and for my future snakes. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for your strength and passion, and thank you for giving me hope, I never knew what that felt like until now❤ I hope you know how inspiring you are in our (the viewers) eyes. I wish nothing but positivity onto you, your husband, and your reptilian family (and Cheyenne of course!)❤

    Okay, now I'm totally confused. I recently rescued a baby Sonoran gopher snake that my students found in a bad situation, but I'm wondering if it isn't a fox snake? Or possibly a bull snake? Can you go over the difference between these similar species? Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a go gopher snake but suddenly not a hundred percent sure.

    I’ve got a fox snake named foxy he was badly injured someone was going to kill him but I stepped in and took him to the vet, vet said he was too badly injured that he couldn’t be released so we (my family and I but mostly me) kept him and he’s my cuddle monster, he’s always up for food or a cuddle or swimming! He gets mad when I say no to food because I feed him on Wednesday. They all have different personality’s that’s for sure.

I'm trying to find out what I should feed it. Its very small and looks too small for a pinky mouse. I read that they eat insects. I'm curious to what kind of insects they eat? I just found one yesterday at my neighbors, she's an older lady who asked me to please get it out of her yard cause she thought it was a massasauga rattlesnake (I live in Michigan) I could tell straight away from the size alone it couldnt be a rattler cause it was just to big. She was 5.5-6 feet long and I will say she was a bit defensive but I had to move her and get her out of their yard cause they have dogs and the neighbor wanted it dead (mistaken Identity is why) I told her ill get rid of it and if it returns to just call me and don't kill it please. Overall it did strike once or twice cause it was sort of cornered but once I had it under control and I had it in my hands and going away she calmed down, she still tried constricting my arm tho and it was kinda cute

    • @87cwshaker
      @87cwshaker 5 лет назад

      They can get in your house just like any other snake......maybe more so because these guys aren't as scared of people as garter snakes. That is why they are usually a lot more docile. It takes a lot to get them worked up usually and anyone with a little experience could remove them for you if needed. They are slow and just take their time usually.

    • @sum12stupid4u
      @sum12stupid4u 5 лет назад +4

      Hey I know this is an old comment, but you can tell by a few things:
      1. Rattlesnakes have a soft triangular shape to their head and a dramatic curve to their nose. Fox Snakes have a more rounded head that is about the same width as their body and a soft curve to their nose.
      2. Rattlesnakes head color is pretty consistent with it's body. A Fox Snake has a much more golden/brown/orange-ish head which is pretty different from it's body.
      3. Rattlesnakes have a ridged segmented tail made of keratin. Fox Snakes have a totally normal tail and merely mimic rattling by hitting it against stuff like leaves.
      4. Rattlesnakes have pits below their eyes. Fox Snakes do not.
      Hope this helps for anyone who finds a Western *or* Eastern, since I'm pretty sure Easterns are protected or endangered.

    Not trying to be rude I don't know much about the subject but: is knowing the lineage less important in reptiles than in dogs or other animals?
    Because in the majority of the videos I've seen the most lineage you have on a snake is that one hybrid Gardner snake clutch you bred you knew their grandpa and grandma I'm.also curious on the breeding of Craigslist reptiles that you mentioned
    Because as a person who's studied professional ethical dog breeding
    I like to see many many generations of lineage and non mystery breeding or animals
    Of questionable heritage
    Again not trying to be rude I like and respect you but I'm super curious about breedings practices in dogs vs reptiles and some of this is a little odd to my ears so I hope you can calm my fears

    • @riannekuilder7374

      Carrie Baehr snakes do not make good pets for children IMO

    • @sum12stupid4u
      @sum12stupid4u 5 лет назад

      I disagree that they don't make good pets, but you should definitely monitor and make sure you do all the research with your child for sure. Make sure you're both educated on proper feeding habits, size for enclosures, heating for enclosures, cool spots, hides, snake mites, etc. I think Ball Pythons make pretty great pets for anyone, or corn snakes. Personally my nephew got a boa constrictor at 9 years old, but I wouldn't recommend that for most kids, as they get pretty freaking huge. Just make sure you teach your kid how to handle them gently and monitor them and definitely do the research, and if you can't get a nice setup for them just wait to buy them til you can.

    • @87cwshaker
      @87cwshaker 5 лет назад

      Corn snakes or western fox snakes are great beginner snakes and a 9 year old should be able to help care for one with little assistance.

    My understanding is that obtained traits (muscles, knowledge, immunities) cannot be transmitted genetically.

    • @anthropology.studies8816
      @anthropology.studies8816 5 лет назад

      Selrisitai - that’s not what she meant. If the snake is immune to certain diseases but has been exposed to them, if released into the wild, can transmit those diseases to the wild population bc she carries them unaffected. That could kill off snakes that don’t have an immunity, which wouldn’t be super great.

    Are Fox snakes hard to keep? Picky at all? What do they usually cost? Are they a good first time snake?

      Kristy Holt-Brightbill they are usually pick you but they do I’ll have their different personalities of coarse and yes they are very good first snakes I’m quite sure how much they cost because I haven’t found a breeder but my fox snake was wild caught but he was so injured he couldn’t be released so we ended up keeping him.

      They are a good first snake as easy to care for as a corn snake but much more expensive since they are not as common in the pet trade. A established 5-6 month old common corn snake is anywhere from 25 to 50 dollars where an established fox snake is usually 75 to 125 dollars. Usually they are mouse eating machines just like corn snakes but will sometimes go off feed for a while in the winter and late spring. This is due to them still having their biological clocks tied to the natural process of brumation and mating season. They have awesome personalities and are super active (also escape artists). Got to keep them in a secured enclosure.

I dodnt know what it was so i just used my fisbing rod to kind of scoot it away from me. It came back 3 times. It kept going straight to my minnow bucket. Lol luckly i got picture and a video.
