How to Care for Egg-Eating Snakes!

- Due to popular request, here's how I setup the enclosures for my egg-eating snakes, plus lots of tips and tricks for caring for them!
Music: www.purple-planet.com & www.bensound.com/royalty-free...
For the first seventeen years of my life (give-or-take three of four years at the start), I had a female ball python (normal color, nothing special). That snake and I literally grew up together. I had a huge enclosure for her, with big rocks and branches and a big heat-lamp, that snake was spoiled. Her name was Kahn, and she was a big cuddle-bug, so I would take her out of her enclosure and give her attention on a regular basis. I loved that snake so much.
I came home from high school one day, eager to see my girl, only to find out that my mother had sold her behind my back. I tried to get her back, but by the time I found the guy, I learned that he had let Kahn starve because he didn't feel like feeding her, and he didn't put a lamp in for her, so she had also frozen to death. My girl's last moments were starving and freezing to death in a big, empty, plastic bucket.
It's been years since then and, needless to say, I don't get along with my mother anymore, and barely speak to her. Now, watching your vids... I just love all the cute little noodles, they're all so cute and wonderful and I love your content, but it also makes me cry a little because I really miss Kahn...
I'm currently not economically able to properly care for another snake, but once my situation gets better, I'd love to get into contact with you guys.
what the hell was your mom thinking?
She got tired of seeing the big enclosure in the house, and the dude she sold Kahn to offered her 20 bucks.
I feel sorry for your loss, but your mom isn't just intolerant of a sweet little sausage noodle that eats mice once every few weeks/days, she got essentially ROBBED, mine costed ONE HUNDRED dollars, and he is a sweet noodle that is very polite(if your hands don't smell like meat/mice)
I have an idea to solve your money problems if you could do this, buy a few mice, and let them breed like crazy, you can get over a hundred from just 5 in a few months, however you have to find someone who is willing to buy, but however it could get out of hand so practice caution
me too
Surprisingly they are not that popular a snake. Since mice are not needed, that wont make anyone (like me) uncomfortable. They dont need much humidity, enrichment is really easy to provide . Also they dont really have teeth so bites are not a big worry. They should be more popular in my opinion but everyone has their preferences, and that's okay.
I just heard about these for the first time in my life today! My heart skipped a beat when I found out they exist! I’ve always wanted to care for a snake but the mice have put me off. Time for a ton of research and hopefully I’ll have one of these bad bois!
I have never understood why people aren’t down with feeding a snake a mouse or whatever it needs.
Oopsie Poopsie A Snake has to eat what it has to eat, and I’m glad their owners give them proper food. I just couldn’t do it myself, I love mice and rats.
@@oopsiepoopsie2898 Personally I'm squeamish when it comes to rats and dead bodies and stuff that's why I only live vicariously through these videos lol.
They eat something humans eat (we just eat bigger ones) and have no teeth so are probably less dangerous. Why aren't they more popular?!
I had a couple males as a kid years ago and they were the sweetest little things. They didn't seem to mind being handled at all.
R3ptoManiac I will be getting a female egg eating snake
Where did you get them from
@@loserqt3480 I know they have them online but I'd check for local breeders. Pet store as last resort but I've never seen them in my town
So I want a snake, but my mom thinks they all eat live mice and so she hates them and is against ever getting one.
I showed her this vid, and she said:
"Guess what you're getting for your birthday."
Omg cool! Enjoy your snek!
Yayyy for you!
Yay congrats when is your bday?
Enjoy that ur mom lets you
Is she going to buy you a carton of eggs for your birthday?
THEY AIN’T GOT NO TEEF
I mean, they dont *need* to have teeth
I thought the female was adorable but then I saw the tiny male and melted XD
I bet these guys would do well in an arboreal setup, with little nests on the branches that you refill with eggs as they eat them. It would be cute to watch them 'hunt' for the nests.
We recently got a pair of egg eating snakes, and they were eating great (7 eggs between 2 snakes in 10 days) then they stopped for a week, and I got worried.
I stumbled across a video (search for "encouraging and egg eater snake to eat for the original - goes to English at about 2 minutes) The short version on what he did - scrape the side of the egg with a sharp knife (like you are peeling a potato) to thin out the shell in a small area near the pointed end of the egg. I tried it, and put the egg and the snake in their smaller vet-transport container, and within 5 minutes she took it. (I had to hold it still so it wouldn't roll around, so technically she has eaten out of my hand.)
Since info on these snakes is hard to come by, I thought I'd share.
They are the most adorable little snakes ❤️

That looks like a delicious wall
SUUUUURE its adorable when he does it but as soon as I do its, "ew why are you licking the wall you weirdo" XD
can you make a video explaining how you feed via syringe?
I would also like to know!
mo five you are great
Couldn't you just crack the egg open in a bowl and suck it up with a syringe or small turkey baster, then squirt it down the snake's throat? I mean there's probably some finesse I'm missing because I've never done it, but the concept isn't that hard.
Devin Asher Bowel? Interesting.
@@asherdevin I would suggest a bowl rather than a bowel, could be fairly unhygienic!
my fav part is when you pop in a random 'phrase' that the snakes are 'saying'
"I like licking the wall" for example. XD Cute~

Well I have pet quail, who's eggs look very much like those (the bigger ones). We eat their eggs. They taste much like chicken eggs, but a bit stronger and richer, and have more yolk compared to white so that's nice. They take maybe 3-6 eggs to be equal to a chicken egg. I mean, chicken eggs vary in size a lot and they vary in size quite a lot too. So 3 particularly big quail eggs might be equal to a particularly small chicken egg, and 6 particularly small quail eggs might be equal to a particularly big chicken egg. Generally it's 4-5 to 1, again depending on size. You can use them for basically everything you'd use chicken eggs for (cakes for example, my Mum says they're not good for Yorkshire Pudding, so maybe avoid them for that) and you can cook them the same ways, although obviously for less time. The conversion rate is a rough guide and you can just judge what seems like the right amount. Also, what you would use a chicken egg for, it might be a bit to much or too little, depending on the size you have, so using smaller _qauil_ eggs you can get a bit more precise. I would generally recommended them, and quail also make great pets, and I've also heard the eggs can be good for allergies, but obviously people have different tastes and some people don't like them. Oh, also the eggs are very pretty, and the shells are often a duck egg blue inside. If you want advice on quail care I've got loads so just ask, but I'm leaving this already long comment here for now.
I'm going to get pare of eggeating snakes next day. Your videos are awesome and always so helpful. Thank you Emily :D
I’m watching this in 2022 because it popped up on my suggested videos and i find it amazing how much this channel has changed and evolved . The information is still amazing but the editing style and the video quality has greatly improved.
Love seeing the difference.
Love this channel
Ps. I also do not have snakes or any reptiles but still love your videos and your channel
Had a very bad nightmare of these snakes as a kid but I still think they are fascinating. Great video.
Where do you sell your snakes I really want to get a few egg eaters

just bought an egg eater today and we will see how it goes. Glad I Discovered your videos
How's it going with your egg eater? I also just got one. She is cute. Hoping all goes well with getting her acclimated

Awesome channel!
I love their cute little googly eyes!!!
My brother and I have been looking into getting a snake and this video has been super helpful and luckily I have flock of finches who lay eggs regularly I’ve always been looking for a way to recycle the eggs !
Do you plan to breed your egg eaters? I'm thinking of getting one but would prefer a captive bred over wild caught as most are on the market. How did you obtain yours and were they wild caught?
Sticky Feets Yes I actually have 6 eggs in the incubator right now! I couldn't believe it because I didn't think the male was big enough to breed, but he proved me wrong LOL. If all goes well they'll hatch in July. My big female came from a rescue (I'm assuming she was wild caught because very few people breed them), and my other two came from a large reptile show in Chicago and are also wild caught unfortunately. But my goal is to start offering a captive-bred alternative to people so fewer are taken from the wild.
If all goes well I would love to get one from you! I feel like there should be enough caught already in the US to captive breed them by now. Please let me know, I'm very interested

These snakes are adorable to say the least.
I’ve been binging your videos all day
can you please do a video explaining the genetics/morphs of snakes? are there different morphs for different species? ball python vs hognose and such?
I love your channel so much! Best of luck with your animals ❤️
Ivy Oak idk if you ever got your response or video but there are different morphs for ball pythons and hognoses, I don’t know about egg eaters as I’m just literally learning about them today.
I am going to try to convince my mom to let me get a snake one day. I’ll try egg eating snakes if other snakes won’t work.
(Side note: yes, I know about the upkeep and handling of these snakes.)
Edit: didn’t work ;-;
rip
Try a power point. Or just be stupidy persistant
My dad is terrified of snakes but I convinced him to allow me to get a rough green snake because they are insectivores so try them too.
My mom is terrified of snakes in particular and reptiles in general. But she also doesn't like rodents, even rabbits, and thinks fish and birds are too messy. She is also allergic to cats even though she loves them. So when we were growing up my brothers and I just had dogs. Now that I live with my wife on our own we have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 canaries, 5 finches and a bearded dragon. So my mom just doesn't visit the dragon. My wife and I are both allergic to the cats as well but we just take allergy pills everyday. My mom loves our cats but doesn't visit much because of her allergy to them lol. She was right about the birds being messy though.
danger noodles arent that expensive ^^ as all animals they need care but a Dog needs more^^ i mean they aret 2-3 eggs every 14 Days and if big enough even chicken eggs wich cost about 0,30€ per egg so they eat eggs worth 0,60 - 0,90€ in 14 days so under 2 Bucks in a Month a Dog needs like 20-40 Bucks per Month ^^ and if u go on vacation have a friend pop in every 5-7 Days filling the Water Bowl and get out the shells and Drop a Egg
Its Brian Barczyks fault that I think that snakes are cute and have learned so much from him. Now I am learning from you. Thank you.
I have watched this video about 100 times... I wish I could find this species I absolutely LOVE them
How often do you feed them?
They’re so cute
I just found your channel today and I love it!!!! Will you do a video like this one for Kingsnakes??? This was so informative!! Thank you!!!! I'm subscribed and waiting for your new videos! 😁
Quick question...of course all animals eat their young in times of need or when there's simply too many, but do egg-eating snakes eat their eggs just..randomly?
(Or are they live-bearers and I'm just ignorant? Lmao)
+Ferretpaus Egg-eaters only eat bird eggs, as they need a hard shell to crack with their vertebrae. So all reptile eggs are off limits, including their own.
I've heard rumors about them eating lizard eggs, but nothing officially documented and it doesn't make sense for them to be able to eat those anyway, so I'm skeptical about those reports.
Ya, I had the same question
could you make one of these for garter snakes ?
I watch this over and over again so I can remember all information but one question do you recommend heat mat or lamp for them also where can I get aspen if I don’t have a fleet store
Thank you so much for this video! So helpful!!!
I watch these videos when I need a break from politics and drama
Came back to this video because I got an egg eating snake and came back to make sure I was doing it right!

Good afternoon, thank you very much for this video, we are thinking of acquiring a pair of Dasypeltis and we did not find much information about their characteristics and their care. I have a question, is Dasypeltis a delicate species in terms of diseases?

What size tank do you recommend keeping them in, and do they climb? I have a spare 10 gallon that i would be able to use for one of these guys and i would build them some levels if they liked to climb.
I'm kind of late, but I think the recommended size is 20-40 gallons
I got one less than a month ago and have it an arboreal 35-40 (not exactly sure) and she loves to climb
Those are a really pretty pair of snakes!
What's the best way to heat the enclosure? Heating pad underneath or heat lamp? Should the humid hide box be on the warm or cool side? Do you need to do anything special on the cool side to keep it a certain temperature? How often should you feed them? Where is a good reputable place to get them from?
I have some questions
- What breed are these snakes, and can you just get them in a pet store like petco or pet smart or did you just order them online
-How long do they live?
-How big/long do they get?
- Should a beginner be able to take care of a snake of this breed?
~I understand if you can’t answer all of these, I’ve been trying to find answers online, and I can’t, so thank you :)~
African Egg eating snakes can be hard to find and are not common at all in fact very few are captive bred and most are taken from the wild witch is why it can be hard to get them to eat when your first get them if they are taken from the wild. Females get a pretty good size a few feet mabey and males are smaller
How long do they get? XD
how long they live and are they just as friendly as corn snakes?
Suleyman Kutlu they can’t bite and take easy.
Old comment but they generally live for 10 years and are pretty docile (plus i mean they cant hurt you even if they arent)
Subbed. Notifications on. My daughter is super interested in your channel and this snake specifically. How big of an enclosure do you recommend?
I bet this would be a cool species to keep in those big tall cabinet enclosures since they like to climb. You could get creative with hiding they're food in little fake nests in branches
How do you heat your egg eaters tubs??
Pets,Reptiles And Beyond I use Reptile Basics heat tape
Snake Discovery Thxxxx!!!
Mom feed them
How big should the enclosure be, and how often should you feed them?
Probably 20 gallons is enough depends on how many snake and their gender too
How do you control the temperature of the heated side? The heat mat I have only turns on and off. Are there any reasonably-priced ones with temperature control? Love the channel by the way!
This is my first time watching ur channel and I watched like 20 vids
Id like some detailed things, like how long to wait after handling them? how large to enclosers need to be? there is literally 0 good care guides. pleease make a more updated care guide on this
I don’t think I could ever have an egg-eating snake just because I don’t have easy access to the eggs they would need, but they are such a cool species!
I luv your channel! And now i kinda like snakes 🐍 only the friendly one though🤪 Also I subscribed to your channel! And liked it!
What size tank is good for a single snake? And how much were yours, if you dont mind me asking. I feel bad asking that but I can't find any for sale!
Dakota D i believe they have them on backwater reptiles
A small snake depending on the breed should be ok with a 20-35 gallon tank
Jaylebae jay you shouldn’t buy animals from backwater
Im getting mine from Backwater soon, :/ is there a problem with the snakes from there?

What other bedding could you recommend? I'm planning on getting an egg-eating snake, and sadly aspen isn't available in my country.
What about diamond dove eggs? They are fairly accessible pets, very calm, cute and love to breed. Would keeping a breeding pair or two be a reasonable food sorce for a single snake? My couple Ducky and Peatree give me a pair of tiny eggs about every six weeksish
(Btw have never considered getting snakes in my life until finding this channel, maaaybe one day it'll happen lol. Thanks other Emily)
How often would you feed these guys? I also saw that you put quite a few eggs in there for both snakes, so about how many eggs would you feed to just one of them?
They eat about 3-4 per week for me
Thanks!
@@SnakeDiscovery what if I put eggs in their enclousure but then after some time they will go bad? Will a snake eat a bad egg? What happens if he does?
any tips on getting a snake to eat eggs? I have a gopher snake, I have heard via complaints from chicken farmers in California where they are native that they love to steal chicken eggs. she is about the right size for chicken eggs but rather than the small rats she should be eating she refuses to eat anything larger than fuzzy rats. I have tried putting quail eggs into her enclosure and they are just treated as neat new rocks for her to ignore.
00:06 I like it already 😁🙌🐍 This is my like my fave reptile channel!
I'm planning on or have been planning on getting one of these misunderstood creatures... Not sure what i'm after really as a beginner but i've been doing my homework and this channel ha been a big part of that. I want something to dip my toe in with, if u get my meaning.... I don't want anything with teeth, docile or not. That's something i feel i really would need to work my way up to. Never having kept a reptile before and always being generally scared of them has stopped me. So something which takes little to maintain ( i live a busy life ) and can't sink it's teeth into my skin & as a bonus also doesn't eat rodents?! Sounds pretty perfect. So i think i may have found what i want in these little guys.
And now to rewind the video and actually watch it 😂😁👍
Hi do you know any reliable places to get one of these cuties, I have been researching them for ages, but I haven't been able to find a place to get them😁😊🥰
Are they aggressive? How about are they a good first time snake? Are they horribly expensive?
Kristy Holt-Brightbill hard to find, very few captive bred. Depending form who you are buying from you are looking at 30-70$

www.thailandsnakes.com/non-venomous/brown-kukri-snake-non-venomous-not-dangerous/
_Notes: Though this snake is not venomous, it is keen to bite and can inflict deep wounds due to it’s large, curved teeth and strong bite. Michael Cota, researcher, says, “Appears that it might be an evolutionary link on the way to being venomous, since it is the only snake that I can think of that has “fangs” (enlarged pair of teeth), but no venom delivery system or ducts to the teeth. They are not dangerous, but will give you quite a bloody bite that takes a long time to heal. What makes them so difficult is that their head is not distinct; therefore, it is extremely difficult to grab behind the head and keep proper control of it. It maneuvers it head around on your grip and then uses teeth to bite - slash."_
_You’ll need a tetatus shot if you are bitten, as with all snakes as a precaution._
Lavar's Balls Both sources you provided are on Oligodon. The genus shown in the video, Dasypeltis, does not have teeth.
Would you recommend them for beginners
no
Yes. Their feeding requirements is different though and you should have stringes in hand just Incase some don’t eat.
I have one and I would definitely recommend! I’m not sure why they aren’t more popular in the reptile community because for the most part, their temperament is very docile and very handleable. The only “con” I can think of is that quail eggs and finch eggs aren’t easily accessible.
HOW DO YOU NOT HAVE THAT MANY SUBS!??! You deserve way more I love your channel!
Hunting Wolf yea I agree! I was here at I think 36 subs.
Herping Rascals, I join a few days ago... Its just so sad because they know so much and I'm going to get my first snake only because I learned so much about them here and I convinced my mom (FINALLY)
Hunting Wolf haha yeah. My mom doesn't like the idea of feeding rats. And since this guys don't eat rats it's pretty much the only snake. Haha
Herping Rascals, My mom is fine with it feeding animals but my dad HATES snakes I think he is actually scared of them but he makes an excuse saying that they are demonic because of the fall of Atom and Eve and the serpent tricking them. So far he doesn't know I'm getting one... He's gonna kill me (RIP person)
Definitely one of the funniest looking snakes when they eat the eggs 😂😂😂

strange question, would they wear a snek sweater? you know, if I want to pull him out to watch a movie with the a.c. going?
Phoebe Domanus yeah but cute?
You mean like a sock?
What if you would hach a button quail? How much work are quails as pets?
I was wondering how you go about practically feeding them quail eggs, I'm hoping to get a female old enough to eat coturnix quail eggs so that I'd have easier and more reliable access to her food.
From what I've read they eat an appropriately sized egg about every 14 days give or take, so do you buy just what you need for each feeding session? Like 4 eggs just so they have some options but only 1 egg is actually eaten and the rest thrown out eventually?
Or do you buy more eggs at a time and just keep them refrigerated until its time to feed? For the 14 days between feeding sessions would your other eggs freshness be compromised?
I really want to hammer out a routine for acquiring eggs in time for feeding while also wasting as little as possible. If that means more frequent trips to the store for eggs I'm fine with that of course.
my mom won't let me buy a snake because she thinks tehy stink. I told her that snakes' FOOD, MICE, are stinky, not the SNAKE, and she said instead, "You know what, stop begging. You are getting a lizard, and NOT a snake." it has been months since she said that and we still can't buy a lizard because of covid :(
I really injoy your channel super useful information in your videos. Way better then those other channels that are more popular because there pretty girls but know almost nothing about the animals

I love snakes and I love mice, so they would be perfect. So cute
So, do you think if i used a substrate bin inside of a extra large reptibreeze, and i added a lot of plants and a heating system, do you think itd thrive so long as i had quail eggs?
I am thinking of getting a egg- eating snake. How often and in what amounts should you feed (eggs) your snake?
Would pine shavings from tractor supply work? I have chickens so I use that a lot! Also, would bantam chicken eggs work? I have bantam chickens! Another thing, how do you feed them as babies??
Great video! I'm interested in these snakes. I assume when you got the original ones they were you wild-caught or only captive born. Did you have problems with parasites and did you deworm them?
If you get one unless you know for sure it’s Captive Bred I’d highly recommend just taking your Egg Eater to the vet since 95% on the market are Wild Caught.
Do you know the temperature for the cages for these snakes? I have 3 snakes and I’m thinking of adding a new addition
