Lyrics:
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you
Though I know that evening's empire has returned into sand
Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you
Take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship
My senses have been stripped
My hands can't feel to grip
My toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wandering
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade
Cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you
Though you might hear laughing, spinning, swinging madly across the sun
It's not aimed at anyone
It's just escaping on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facing
And if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time
It's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind
It's just a shadow you're seeing that he's chasing
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you
And take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time
Far past the frozen leaves
The haunted frightened trees
Out to the windy beach
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
With one hand waving free
Silhouetted by the sea
Circled by the circus sands
With all memory and fate
Driven deep beneath the waves
Let me forget about today until tomorrow
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey! Mr. Tambourine man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

Hello, Mário. This is a nostalgic feeling for the passing of the time. A "saudade" of a time whose dreams would seeming really. I know about it. I,m 71.
@@HelianaSuper Thank you for showing me a wonderful word "saudade" - Saudade is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one cares for and/or loves. It's beautiful, but short a verse. It really doesn't matter tho. It's the greatest song of all time no matter what version.

Correct, and precisely why The Byrds COMPLETELY MISUNDERSTOOD this classic lyric...
Genius, or just high on locoweed?
@@brianmolstad1255 Did he take acid and then write this song? Almost certainly.
Did millions of other peope take acid and then simply go back to their day jobs and subsequently not write a song that will last millienia? Definitely. That's the difference.
Dylan was such a creative genius in the 60s.
Reads a newspaper, writes Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol, Hard Rain, Only a Pawn in their Game etc etc.
Takes acid, writes Chimes of Freedom and Mr Tambourine Man.
A natural poet, and a great singer IMO.
"To dance between the diamond sky with one hand waving free". No words can do that justice.
Literally think thats all most of us want in life. A couple genuine moments where we can feel good/free

Me
Through the decades, I grew old, listening to Dylan. Allow me to correct myself: I grew young, listening to Bob Dylan.
In January of 1967 I got out of the army and started college. I took classes all day and worked eight hours every night as a computer operator. I got home after midnight and had calculus at eight AM three days a week. Every night when I got home I listened to this with a beer and after Bob and a beer I could sleep. Then back into the grind. I made it! BSME 1971. MSME 1979. Retired in 2001. Good education, good career, good wife, good kids (twin girls). The army made it all possible even thought I hated every minute of it.

@@milesjolly6173 no. It was recorded in 1964, originally for Another Side of Bob Dylan.
But he, realising it was a special song, wasn't happy with the version he cut, so he rerecorded it for Bringing it all Back Home in 1965.

Were you named after the Dylan song?
One of the most beautiful, poignant songs ever written.
It is about the Devil's lettuce.
this is te only song in all of history that i feel like is magic, it literally feels like he is casting a spell. "yes to dance beneath the diamond sky, with one hand waving free" that line brings me to tears every time. tears from the absolute joy of it. it is a metaphor, for everything that is great, it represents true absolute freedom, it represents the unbridled exuberance of youth, it represents all the wonder and the joy of existence and infinity of the quest for knowledge.
so you will see why the high of a drug gives freedom for a little while.
I agree with everything you said. I have no words to express the feeling this song and this line gives me. I guess just gratitude, for being able to hear, understand and be touched by it in such a deep way.
dancing 'neath the diamond sky with one hand waving free--I can see it the image, feel being there, throwing my body into it, smell and hear the salt air and waves. Rich in every way. Hearing this again, that literary award seems appropriate.....
I was very lucky to buy a stash of books about Bob Dylan from the estate of a deceased musician in Cape Town, South Africa. This is his masterpiece. Of all his great works, none top the majesty of this. A song of complete liberation from the chains of the ego and physical illusion...
One of a very few songs that can bring the tears out of my eyes, damn this song is powerful!
In 1970 my 23 year old brother and my 10 year old self shared a bedroom. There was a period when our post-midnight argument was whether this song (on his copy of the Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits compilation) should be played over and over again (as he wanted) or whether Subterranean Homesick Blues should be played so that I could dance to it in my pyjamas. In retrospect my brother was right.
Back in the late 60s, we used to drop acid, then pop an amyl cap just in time for "to dance beneath the diamond sky witih one hand waving free." How every detail of those fleeting moments from 50-odd years ago, especially Dylan's lyrics written across the sky as if with fireworks, remains etched in memory is a mystery-a very pleasant mystery.
Do they let you out in the Yard once in a while?
Oh to have lived so vibrantly and happily , Dear sir one would believe you had found eternity
@@gratefulkm For those few, fleeting moments, at least. The 60s weren't all good vibes and happiness, but the tenor of the times was confidence in a better life than our parents had had, which in large part turned out to be justified. @@gordonhutchison1126 I remember a trip on Chislehurst golf course, no Dylan input but that same vibe, and many other times turning clouds into Leonardo artwork. This song, and Chimes of freedom, capture something of those days and nights.

This song makes me cry, I don't know why, because it's beautiful?
Menopause?
Forget these wankers who commented on your post. The reason it makes you cry, is indeed because it is beautiful. But it is more than that. It is from the perspective of the forlorn and empty, hopeful towards the future, yet nostalgic of the past. Not every line makes 'sense' in a rational manner, but together they evoke a feeling of sad resignation and glimmer of hope simultaneously. It is not in any way political. It transcends that. It is about the journey of life, written for those of us who love all the little sweet things, or deep good things, that come and go, while knowing we can do little to prevent or restrain it.

1965...The first time I heard this tune was when the Byrds recorded it. I know Bob wrote it and did it first, but I wasn't into folk music back then. Even though I knew he was a prolific songwriter I really didn't start listening to Dylan until after the release of the "Hurricane" song on the Desire Album (1976). From that point on, I've been a huge fan, and instead of just listening to other artists singing his songs I also started listening & purchasing his albums. Most definitely a Musical Genius.
The last verse encapsulates the entire existential position of human kind.
Dylan was like Bach in the sense that you really truly believe he was touched by some divine intervention. No mortal human could create art this good.
I was talking to my mother about if we could buy a tambourine a while ago and my father told me about this song. He told me to listen to it but since I was not a fan of Dylan at that time I did not want to listen to it. While on a trip I fell in love with this song after I listened to it once. Thanks father for bringing this song into my life.
As many masterful albums Bob Dylan has recorded, Bringing It All Back Home is the MASTERPIECE.
I think that when I listen to Bringing It All Back Home...then I think the same for Blonde on Blonde....and again about Blood on the Tracks....and so it goes
This is my vote for the greatest song ever written.
Incidentally, Like A Rolling Stone is number 1 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s best 500 songs. It’s not Tambourine
Man but I imagine that one isn’t far behind.
And to think 25 years ago when my mother put this on I was mortified only now I really appreciate what she did for me and siblings almost forcing us to listen.. we now all do same to our kids.. timeless masterpiece x
I'm 80 now but this song brings back my 20s!
I came from Glasgow to London and was living in the street when I heard this , summed up how I felt.
"...to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free..."
David Crosby has said that Roger McGuinn brought a tape of this song in to the studio when it was brand new. McGuinn thought it would be a great song for The Byrds to cover. When Crosby heard that it was a Dylan song, he was unenthusiastic. He said that he just could never get past Dylan's singing voice.
Then McGuinn played the song for the assembled group. And when Dylan got to the line, "...to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free...", Crosby says he thought to himself, "Yeah, OK, I get it. The guy is REALLY GOOD".
And then he said he thought to himself, "Damn! I wish I had written that..."
To Rocky Racoon I agree whole heartly with all you wrote in your reply to the Bob Dylan's song Mr Tambourine Man Bob Dylan' was a genius writing a song in 2 days at the age of 23 his music "Rocks"!!!
And although The Byrds had the big hit, I think the original is the real deal. I don't feel this way about every Dylan song.
When I first heard this on the radio in 88, I had to get Bob's Greatest Hits vol.1 on cassette. Wore out 3 copies. Was in high school & felt lost because my parents also divorced in 88. Bob in a way helped me find my way with his music. Thanks, Bob.
A true beautiful inspiring masterpiece.
My father Love this song . He is 58 and loved all the rock, pop, jazz and almost everykind of music and songs
This song makes me think everything will be okay

BEST. VERSION. OF. THIS. SONG. HE. EVER. SANG (straight off the album). And oh, that sweet mouth harp!!! I've loved this version of this song for close to half a century now. Truly one of the greatest songs from the latter half of the 20th century.
👵
Yes! His delivery is entrancing. The way he sort of rocks back and forth with each line. So relaxing and beautiful.
I think the '64 Folk Festival version is superior, though the margins between the two versions are thin. This version might have an extra verse, but the FF version has delivery, harmony and soul like few Dylan recordings do.

This is my favorite Bob Dylan song.

The perfect song, professing a longing for transcendence from situations and problems. It's a bit like David in the Psalms (55: 6) when he is on the run from Saul and says, "Oh that I had wings like a dove! Then I would fly away and be at rest!"
My weariness amazes me too. How'd I even get so old?
