Because we imbue the words with meaning. The magic is only partly in the words themselves (although they are important); the magic is also in our minds.
What a song, I am an African precisely Cameroonian of 21 years old and in 2024 I am listening to Bob Dylan,it can be so weird but I love his songs too much...Bob Dylan is said or known to be Hugues Auffray’s friend a French singer who had translate Dylan ‘s songs in French and both of these artists are just extraordinary.
This, plain and simply, is probably the best song ever written. To write deep and profound lyrics, in which every single word is as relevant in 2021 as it was in 1964 says it all. These words will ring true in 200 years as well, i'm sure. This song alone is proof of his Nobel-price worthyness.
Exactly. This song quite literally is revolutionary. You could play it at the start of time or at the end of it. Because the only one constant fixed point in life is change it will be forever relevant. That alone is insane in it's own respect. It's quite literally a timeless song essentially by design. There is only a handful of songs that you could ever say that about.
TheRickay That’s because when they recorded songs in the 60s in the studio, they would sing the whole song all the way through and then would take the best version of it and release it. It’s not like nowadays where the “artist” sings a line they record it, then they’ll sing another line record it and mix which ever lines were sung best. There was no auto tune, there was no let’s take half of this take and part of this take. There’s a great story that Al Cooper (the accordion player for “Like a Rolling Stone”) said. He was in the recording studio with Bob Dylan and they recorded the song 11 times and the studio manager released the song that we all know and love today- yet the accordion player said that on take 1 of recording, Bob Dylan nailed the song and did it so well that they didn’t even think they needed anymore takes and thought that that was it and that should have been it. He said “You don’t mess with magic and that first take WAS magic“ but he said the song they released was like take 6 or 7 and doesn’t even think it was the best version of the song. So you’re always going to hear infractions of his voice in every single one of his songs pre-80’s. That’s what makes the artists of the 60’s and 70’s amazing, authentic, real, and superior artists.
The first "live" music I heard as a child was played by my sitter, Barbara, who played Dylan on her guitar. Nearly sixty years later, I am writing and playing acoustic folk music. Needless to say, Dylan has been a great influence on my own music. Thanks, Bob!
The past few days changed me. I'll never moved on from the stories my friends told me on June 5, 2020 in front of UP Cebu. The world is crumbling down and this song still echoes throughout. Here's a salute to everyone who protested.
Come gather 'round people, wherever you roam, and admit that the waters around you have grown. How prescient, written 60 years ago. I'm bowing down to our friend, the genius, Mr. Dylan. If only the "powers that be' could hear. There's a battle outside, and it's ragin'.
The year was 1969 In a heap of free stuff on the porch of the general store in a small town in Vermont, apparently left abandoned by some "hippies" I found this Bob Dylan album. I'd never heard music like this before. It actually spoke of important matters, it was amazing!
The times, they are ever changing. It has nothing to do with rights or right and wrong but the cycles of history. The reason why this song message is universal, it can be applied everywhere. Where things have gotten better over time and where things have gotten worse. Change is not necessarily good, but it always hurts those who refuse to adapt to it. That’s the message of the song
@themachine9366 actually a song has its meaning, by what the listener perceives it to say ,to them. I understand what he wrote it about, but ppl connect music with emotion and feel it from there. So they're not wrong ,thier just feeling it thier own way. God bless

These words are immortal and we'll stay with every generation I just hope they don't forget what these words mean. Stop the greed , the wars, hunger and peace will follow.
Honestly this song truly is timeless. Think about it the one fixed point in life is change. You could play this at the very beginning of time or at the end of it. Because the only fixed point in life is change this song will forever be relevant and quite literally timeless. There is only a handful of songs literally ever that you could even say that about. With just this song alone Bob you earned your Nobel prize. You truly did. Just thought of it now, this might be one of the most important songs of all time though. It will forever be the most relevant, definitely.
I can't help but cry every time I listen, torn between joy and sadness. It's a kind of sound of humanity, of its past, its present and its future, from a personal or global point of view.
This is one song that absolutely transcends Generations because its meaning is absolutely Timeless and is forever relevant Bob Dylan was and still is wise-beyond-his-years
It's timeless because he's quoting Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount. The paradoxical statements of The Poor shall be Rich and The First shall be Last.

@@pupsalex Agreed. Bob hates the label, anyway. He told Ed Bradley in that now famous 60 Minutes interview that when he was at home and he looked at himself in the mirror that it made him feel like a fraud. He further said that he could understand it if people compared him with Elvis, but definitely not a prophet.
Mr Dylan has gone to great lengths to disassociate himself from the songs he wrote and be labeled as the voice of a generation or anything else. He seems to know the truth behind what he writes, but doesn't want any recognition for it. That's the mark of a prophet. There are others, too, some still living to this day.
Like how this song can always remain true despite what generation might be listening to it and the fact that it isn’t too on the nose yet is still easily understood makes it an even better message.
No matter how young they are either. He was young when this was written.
The amount of wisdom in this song is just unreal...
No words. Bob says them all.

Especially the verse about senators and congressmen.
Their walls were rattled.

Hello
This songs is one of his greatest achievements ever. What a song, what a talent, god blessed us with Bob
Blow it out your arse!
His song writing skills are amazing, but in my opinion he’s really off beat. Nonetheless very talented.
As relevant in November 2024 as ever... 🕊
That's one thing you can't take away from America- It knows entertainment better than any other country on the planet. The reason? IMMIGRATION.

God bless

Somebody better listen to the bars of this prophet!!!! In the year 2024!!!
Don't call him that,we could start calling gene roddenberry one too, some people just know how to put words to things we all know is coming, that's not a prophet,it's the exact opposite.
That's because he has autism@@pupsalex
Yes he publicly does, but is one anyway.@@oleggorky906
Mr Dylan has gone to great lengths to disassociate himself from the songs he wrote and be labeled as the voice of a generation or anything else. He seems to know the truth behind what he writes, but doesn't want any recognition for it. That's the mark of a prophet. There are others, too, some still living to this day.
Like how this song can always remain true despite what generation might be listening to it and the fact that it isn’t too on the nose yet is still easily understood makes it an even better message.
Agreed. I feel people, no matter how old they are, should realize that this feeling is persistent.
No matter how young they are either. He was young when this was written. There are younger people who relate through the doors of discovery, opened by their parents or grandparents, a teacher or a mentor. Some play the guitar and sing keeping the resonance and relationship of then and now alive and well. Thanks to all who relate to this timeless song.
Not only a masterpiece of poetry and intensity but a folk hypnotizin prophecy and a emotionin portait of that magic generation. Hard to describe in few words. He was just 21 when he composed it..Oh pure genius
