So I just wanna take this time out to say how grateful I'm today for watching this tutorial. I don't usually comment anywhere with such enthusiasm as I am filled with in today. First of all, I wanna thank you Sean Divine for this channel and all the great tutorials. Really they helped me a lot and unlike these other creators that focus on building their "RUclipsr - like" persona while doing music, you actually give out gems through these tutorials without compromising quality. A fine example of professionalism. Today I was stuck on an 808 part of my mix and I didn't know what to do or where to go next, I added whole bunch of plugins but it kept making the mix more and more unnatural to sound on my phone speakers. I was so frustrated and annoyed. I watched atleast 4+ hours of videos on RUclips and none of them helped me in any sort of ways (and these videos were of mixing engineers with more than 100k+ subs). Despite being subbed to you for so long, it didn't occurred to me to watch your video. Shame on me. But then I searched and this popped up right at the top. I wish I could've watched this 8 minute video without wasting my 4 hours of watching complete BS. You truly deserve a lot more. Keep making such amazing tutorials, man! I personally really appreciate it.
"Today I was stuck on an 808 part of my mix and I didn't know what to do or where to go next, I added whole bunch of plugins but it kept making the mix more and more unnatural to sound on my phone speakers." God demn, you described my day.
this trick is sick, it's also used a lot in Metal productions where they split the bass guitar in a high and a low track and distort the high track like a guitar
Big ups brother, bass has always been the trickiest parts for my mix. Always sounds good on headphones than transferring to car it gets messed up, but this def does the trick. Super helpful and easy to understand your tutorials. Thanks my man!
You are the best! I learned like 3 things today only, just from your videos. Sharing knowledge like that is why I love this era, knowledge is everywhere just grab it! Thank you a lot!
Your videos are so helpful, clear ! It's gold for producer like me who learn everything from tutorials & books.. Thank You so Much ✊🏾🙌🏾 Love from France
@@prodbycxrlos I took it when I just started mixing, for me it was a very good starting point for learning how to mix. He takes you through 3 different songs where he shows different mixing techniques. I'd say it is for beginners tho.
I've been duplicating my 808s for a while now cause I didn't get them to stand out when I wanted to. Cutting the low end of and using saturation or distortion plus panning is the key 👍 The way you showed this, informative to the point.. Im subscribing 🙏
@@SeanDivine do you have a video on your most essential mixing and mastering plugins? Im only using stock and free ones 😊 but ive seen a lot of people using izotope stuff.
Thanks Man for all your vid, much appreciated, pls can you make a vid on how you made the sidechain on the 808 on this track, pls that will be amazing if you can, thanks
I used this process (with a different plug in but same process), and I was able to turn up my 808 w/o drowning out any other parts of the instrumental or the vocals. I got a nice bassline now that is present in the mix as opposed to the one that I was having to tuck back to keep from overpowering the vocals, etc.
I knew about this split processing and tried it but was affraid to distort my highs so heavily, IDK why exactly. But now I will feel free to experiment with it more.
Basically this would also be possible without splitting the 808 into 2 channels by using a multiband distortion plugin like Fabfilter Saturn or even better Ohmicide, right? (And for stereo width of the higher frequencies Izotope Ozone could possibly do the job.)
Perfect, I hate splitting to multiple channels/creating busses/sends and try to avoid it unless it absolutely can't be avoided haha I've never really used ohmicide so far in my released stuff but I'm trying to get into it atm. Maybe you could do a video about it some time if you feel like it'd be a good idea. But then again I have never seen anyone else ask for this in below your videos so it'd probably not really be worth the effort.
Thanks for your lessons they are so helpful. your beats are crazy fire. Do you have any lessons on how to compress the bass to make it sound thicker and fuller and so the levels don't keep going up and down on the channel to keep it all at one level. Thanks
Great video bruh. again a nugget.. question, can you do a video to show what phasing is? I have never heard that and want to see what you are talking about and how you do it with izotope
Hey Sean, In the video I saw you leave the 808 comp release at 0 when sidechaining the kick. If I am not sidechaining the kick would you play with the release time on the 808 comp?
good technique althpugh that distrtion was so ugly texture wise. i mix my beats to the texture like painting with oils or acrylics too much fuzz can be too rough unless you going for that texture. bitcrusher allow more smoother finish or rough with more control than the distortion preset. also you did map the eq to get some of the specific tectures to jump out. for example listen to beyonce track she just dropped called already the 808 high tones were literally dancing through any system you play them on. great video anyways
Thanks for the tutorial, Sean! I have one more problem with the 808s. What you explained in this video works fine for my 808s when they have all the same tone through the song. On some songs, I use 808s with a quite big tonal range. Some of these tones are way quieter then others. What can i do?
sometimes different notes of the 808 will be louder, depending on the speakers you're listening to. If you want to make the levels more consistent, you can EQ the louder notes to be quieter or use multiband compression
I have problems when seperating the 808. Its maybe because this sample aint perfect for this move. I can Not make it Hit as hard as if i let the 808 alone. I get some weird phasing issues. Maybe i will give it a try again but i think i will be sticking to multiband effects on the high frequencies of the 808 :) or am i doing something wrong maybe ?
Awesome! ISt's such a detail but gives great impact. My question, is this usable on any other samples`? Like a kick drum or melody? And If I "Sidechain" with an EQ (Automation) Will It disturb eachotehr ?
Thanks for great video Sean. Just one quick question. Can I EQ HIGH 808 track (of course using Linear phase EQ to avoid phase issues) or it's better to leave it as it is (apart from cutting low freq of course). Abd also when further in process I want to EQ that 808 sound I understand the best way is to group LOW and HIGH into group channel (BUS) and EQ them together. Thank you. Lucas

Is there any stock logic plugins that can substitute for stereo delta.
Hey Sean, In the video I saw you leave the 808 comp release at 0 when sidechaining the kick. If I am not sidechaining the kick would you play with the release time on the 808 comp?
yes, this is specifically for sidechaining (going for the most transparent / quickest response)

Where I can find this 808 u used in this video?
So!? Are you sidechaining the 808 to each other? What difference would it make if you sidechained the hi 808 to the lo and vise versa?
Dude that was genius!
Do you master you own tracks??
thanks! I do

Yo Sean what do you think about mixing in studio one I like mixing in logic
Thanks for the tutorial, Sean! I have one more problem with the 808s. What you explained in this video works fine for my 808s when they have all the same tone through the song. On some songs, I use 808s with a quite big tonal range. Some of these tones are way quieter then others. What can i do?
Here's a beat i made, where the issue is noticeably to hear when the 808s start to play: soundcloud. com/englishg2000/purple-drop
sometimes different notes of the 808 will be louder, depending on the speakers you're listening to. If you want to make the levels more consistent, you can EQ the louder notes to be quieter or use multiband compression
Thanks! I'll try it in the next sessions :)
Thanks for such informative and valuable vids!
Is this a ‘standard’ technique that could/should be applied to all songs with low bass?
I wouldn't say standard and there's no "always" in mixing... I use it often, just depends on the song :)
I have problems when seperating the 808. Its maybe because this sample aint perfect for this move. I can Not make it Hit as hard as if i let the 808 alone. I get some weird phasing issues. nvm realized it was sidechain ha
Thanks for great video Sean. Just one quick question. Hey I'm new to producing, what eq plug in is used here?
my 808 low dosn't sound like yours, can you explain me how can i correct that? thanks
sample choice is key! check this out.... bit.ly/SubLab-SD
Thanks a lot man, but I have a problem, my beat already has a heavily distorted instrument and it's fighting the 808 now
Raei Wenzile Flames, throw a low pass filter on the 808 or recreate the distorted instrument because if you try to eq it will probably sound bad. 😘
REVEN6E thanks for the reply, but a low pass will kill the 808 though 🤔
do a low cut on the distorted instrument below around ~100hz. That will free up the low end space for your kick / 808
Do you ever find doing that changes the sound of the 808 you were originally going for?
you can shape the 808 however you like but yes this does open up some radically different tones :)
