I do have a question. If I was to release music it will probably be through distrokid, because they upload music to all the stores at once, would there be 1 target to aim for in terms of lufs?
I just started back with music production after a 10 year break. It’s almost like I’m starting over. Everything has changed so much. This video is 5 years old and I’m trying to learn from it.
Your RMS after after the limiter has changed everything for me. I can finally settle on a mix that isn't perfect and be somewhat satisfied. This one of the most important mixing videos I've ever came across. I wish more mixers were as honest as you. Thank you, thank you and thank you. Devine is what your are dude. Peace!
This is a great explanation. Thank you for delivering quality content Sean! It's so helpful. I've been an active viewer for a while now. Maybe like 5 years. And I return these videos frequently to help my grow my engineering skills. You are appreciated!
YOOO deadass thank you for explaining the difference between RMS and LUFS so clearly and detailed too in this video. Watched a lot videos about the two and never could wrap my head around it.
Great! You are explained very understandable manner. I am new to audio editing. I have a spec for loudness/peak. How to achieve this. Loudness Guidelines: All audio work must meet the following requirements 1. The targeted loudness should be -16 LUFS 2. Short form programming (Less than 60 sec) shouldn't exceed -14 LUFS 3. The True Peak Level shouldn't exceed -3 dB TP to prevent clipping when using lossy encoders All measurements should be taken for the whole program
I always use three loudness meters: RMS (usually for low frequencies, bass notes), LUFS_short for control mix with&without vocal, calibrated K12. And sometimes VU meter.
For clarification @ 8:40 the -11.1 is fair or should it keep going to -14? I understand but I don't understand the numbering. Is -11.1 lower or Louder then -14. Thanks for sharing
Great vid thanks. Still not sure I understand what should I look for or what number to target the RMS for (when producing and mixing, not for mastering if it makes any sense)
Thanks to you man that we as amateur producers can learn a lot of things in this industry through your tutorial, learned a lot over the years but not so as i do now from your videos.
My problem is when i finish producing & mastering my song at the average of -14LUFS and comparing my track to my references song and also others songs , seems very quite and very weak any solution!!!!!
Great video! Thanks a lot! But i have a question! Do you release a video about how to deliever your music to a target LUFS and RMS? If it`s there please link the video! Thanks!
Thanks for this video I found it helpful, even though I’m just starting to understand what all this means and apply to this all my tracks, it’s great to have a guide and I just downloaded levels and Expose, to get my mixes ready for other streaming services like Spotify and sound cloud again, as I feel there at that professional stage before release
hi, i have a question, do you know some grafic plug ins, for, from protools, that give you RMS, LUFS and true peak, ass well as your plugins from logic, i really dont found plug ins like yours, plug ins that graficly are so god., THANKS i love this videos
I use Expose to analyze the LUFS of an entire song. Only downside is it's installed outside of the DAW so you have to export each time you make changes, but I love it. It also analyzes true peaks, stereo balance, and dynamics. I'm planning to use Youlean in conjunction to it so I can measure LUFS in the box
@@AsterisqBeats Thank you very much. Currently I'm using iZotope RX when I need to let it do the work to achieve a specific level, or to check levels without having to play the track.
I'm really enjoying the videos dude. One Q: So what's the difference between Peak and True Peak? I see there's the option in that level meter to have different levels. Thanks, Sean!
thanks Elliott! True peak is a more accurate peak reading that takes into account the conversion from digital to analog (which can result in overs that peak doesn't detect)
@@SeanDivine Thanks! I am working in Digital Perfomer, they seem to have no sufficient metering options in this matter though. Actually quite a disappointment here ;-) I also noticed some differences in the accuracy between the Waves WLM Plus you reviewed in an other video, and the Ozone metering within the maximiser...
Sir Please Reply the Question - How can I set the lowest true peak? in my case I target 0.1 But its always goes 2.5 DB, So tell how i can get lowest peak... Or 2.5 db peak is good or bad ? Please reply soon....
I do a good mastering on my track and it sound like a other good MP3 on my computer, the same volume and quality ... but then on soundcloud, my track sound good but on the PRO profiles, i hear good track with a very louder volume ..... why ?
On your master channel, on the maximizer or limiter, have a ceiling around -1.0 or - 1.5 and it should clean it up a lil better. That way SoundCloud doesn't crush your sound. Or just mess around with the ceiling. For certain songs I find -0.1 to be ok. On some songs I have to lower it a lil bit like - 1.0 Just have a super transparent limiter and test the ceiling
@@ITRiBUTEI i just test this and no zero difference on soundcloud. Soundcloud dont have a difference with -0,1 or -1,0 dB, it's explicated on internet when you search about this ...
Interesting video. I never heard of LUFS until I watched it. Ok. Question... If I have two identical speakers except one is rated at 100 RMS watts and the other is rated at 250 RMS watts, will there be a difference in LUFS? Thanks!
GREAT video Sean, thank you. Quick question.... I am trying to set the levels on drum sample patches for live use, trying to get them all as unified in level as possible so they dont jump out of the FOH and monitor mixes... What way of measureing would you recommend before tweaking the output levels accodingly?
Hey Maurice, I would use True Peak and set the levels for all samples to unity -6dB or so. That will give you some headroom in the analog conversion to work with and as long as it's below 0 TP, they shouldn't blow out the monitors :)
I do have a question. If I was to release music it will probably be through distrokid, because they upload music to all the stores at once, would there be 1 target to aim for in terms of lufs?
Native Gringo check out the video coming later this week. I explain this in detail :)
Awesome 👌🎶💪🔊

Your voice calms me.
Going back and learning a lot from last years videos! And as always - it's so inspiring! Thank's Sean!
glad to hear it :)
Thank you so much for the needed tips bro, because I see a lot of youtube beats at -5 for LUFS and it hurts my ears lol.
Loudness is perceived. Very enlightening. Just the way that feeling warm or cool is arbitrary based on the relativity of our senses. Good lecture fam!

Wow amazing can’t wait for the next videos on this subject.
Just popped by to say your explanation was ...

And severely informative. Thank you.
glad it helped :) thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge so succinctly - it helps a lot.
dude great content and information, you broke this down really well and the track sounds dope!
great video--thanks Sean
Great explanation, too the point with no waffling around like some do.
Thanks Sean, helping me build concept of RMS & True Peak & LUFS in logic & help how to use them.
Great to hear!
Very well explained!
thank you!

My pleasure Pablo!
well done - good presentation style - articulate
Thanks for the kinds words 🙏
love that bass tone in the intro, nicely saturated 😀
thanks :)
Love all your tutorials. Will you ever make a video giving tips on how to use a spectral analyzer for us engineers working in non studio areas?
thanks! I'll see what I can do :)
I liked the whole video, of course, but the RMS and LUFS talk was a good refresher. Thank you.
:)
Thanks Sean. An important topic that is confusing to many (ok, me at least).
Very helpful video, thank you :)
This was extremely helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain!

Hi Sean. Is there a way to measure the LUFS Integrated instantly without playing the whole song with each correction you make?

Hi Sean! Thnx for the clear video, really helpful. Question: what software brand are the Level Meter and the LUFS Meter you pull up at 0:13? Thnx!
Great content👏🏻👍🏼🥂✨
Can you do a quick tut on how to eq certain samples from 70s or 80s music
So whats the standard you would want to have your
lufs, peak, rms and dr for most songs?
Pro L 2 LUFS Meter the best of the best.
Sondaze! Yes.
Sometimes and free TBProAudio too. But need to calibrate for mix level.
Hey! Great video
So... if after metering you want/need to alter the output level... where do You...make that change?
Thanks!
typically, the master fader
Sean Divine ok. I did it in Ozone or in the Slate Mix rack ... those plugins work great... LUFS ... very helpful!👍🏻
nice info!

they're stock in logic

stock logic pro x multimeter
