Have never had to do that to a speedometer. Thank you for taking the time to show how to properly set the mileage.

I'm here, 3rd in a row. Good time killer. Good series so far.

Your speedo suffered capacitor electrolyte leakage due to age, it travels down the capacitor legs and rots ths copper under the green coating, fixed many, also you can change the mileage by just popping the low number end of the rod with small black gears out, no need to remove face or take metal spring thing off, Used to have a J reg Zircon Blue MR2 before my mr2 turbo, just done entire passenger sill, mine never had the foam, rusted through 5 layers jack point disappeared, it starts as water getting in wheel arch from the side trim stainless steel screws and plastic thread inserts, as well as the black bungs in the sill water slowly creaps in and as driving moves to the rear sill section and gets trapped / collects between the 3 layers inside the sill and starts at the 1 spot weld holding outer sill section, to second skin and also to that bottom rusty bit inside where your foam was, and gets worse, rotting from inside out. Hope you finish yours, great cars, my website that has my blue on on is www.mybluemr2.co.uk

Thanks for the detailed comment, and your website is awesome as well. I hope we finish ours as well 😂

On mine the speedo would go to about 40 at max and just stopped working after a few months. It’s a 91 usdm turbo. Would you think I had a similar problem with the capacitors?

@@Nopenotatall yes most probably the speedo, mins started to have a mind of its own and would work for 10 mins then needle just drop to the bottom, the sender in gearbox use a spinning magnet to generate the pulses (hall effect sensor) so providing the plastic gear has not broken in gearbox and wiring is good it will be speedi gauge its self. Wiring on the plug goes, 12v supply feed from 7.5A fuse (brown colour) in engine bay fues box, GND to chassis and signal output wire goes into connector block next to ECU in rear trunk, then from there down to front of car to connector where the door loom plugs in (but a differant plug, 3-4 down there) and from there to the instrument cluster, traced mine to confirm wiring all good.

Damn rust I hate it! Im cleaning up some on my celica over x-mas. Think you have found it at the right time though, hard to sort out when it sets in from inside out.

Wow you guys have really weird instrument clusters! I just have the Japanese one.

Love it EXCEPT the music is too loud compared to your voice audio

Thanks! We were still getting to grips with editing on these early episodes, a few people made the same observation with the sound, I think we've got the levels a lot better in the newer videos :)

toss a towel down on your table before working on the gauges and you wont scratch the lense

Noooo - don't remove the needle from the speedo!!
The spindle it sit on holds it against the rest pin, so when you popped it off, the spindle will have unwound about another 45°. Unless you have a way of giving the car an input signal when you put the needle back on then your speedo needle will almost certainly be a long way out when you put it back on. TBH, I suspect that's what the problem was with the original speedo; from how it moved it certainly looked that way to me.
One solution to putting the needle back on is a very quiet, straight road and a GPS app on your phone so you can put it ba ck on at a know 30mph (for example). It's pretty tricky to do that though. Another would be to jack up the car and find a known gear / rpm combo that matches a certain speed so you can refit the needle like that. (My rev3 MR2s have different gear ratios to your rev2, so I can't provide that for you - there are gearbox calculators out that that will get you a theoretical value though)

Mark Shinn ah shit! That's what I get for assuming this speedo would be as easy to work with as the modern stepper motor ones I'm used to 😖
Thanks for the heads up though, and for the tips on how to fix it. Worst case scenario I'll have to get another speedo...
I don't think this was the problem with the old speedo though, as sometimes it would read correct, some times high, and sometimes low.

Yeah, it's certainly not a modern stepper motor. Sorry :(
The angle it moved off the peg looked a lot like the kind of angle you'd get from a badly placed needle (having made this mistake myself) but you know what it's been doing better than I do.

Mark Shinn I came up with an alternative method to recalibrate the speedo - ruclips.net/video/SQjN-exCJrQ/видео.html 😊
